Growing up in a holistic family and as a competitive dancer, natural therapies such as massage, chiropractic etc were always utilized to alleviate pain and discomfort. She is a wife, a mom, a daughter, a sister, an aunt and a friend to many. She became interested in pediatric therapies when her son, Huntley, was born with a rare genetic disorder. Her gentle touch always brought comfort to Huntleys little muscles. And as they say, the rest is history! Kasey is one of the owners of Pure Discovery and has been a Massage Therapist for 12 years. How fitting for SCI Awareness Month! We are talking to Dr. Samer Shamout MD, MSc Urology and 2 wheelie awesome peeps with lived experience, Steve Crochetiere and Kasey Aiello. We talk about all things related to the human bladder and how a spinal cord injury can affect its function. We ask all sorts of questions regarding catheterization, UTIs, antibiotics and how to maintain bladder health (if you missed it, check out our last episode #33 where Brittney Neunzig talks about eating for a healthy bladder). You will get to hear from both Kasey and Steve about what their journey has been like after surviving a sci and living that cathing life. We enjoy being able to talk openly about these subjects that can sometimes be difficult or awkward to talk about. The fact of the matter is, we are all human and our bodies have to get rid of the waste somehow and this usually changes after a SCI. We want to make it acceptable and comfortable to talk about these things so the newly injured people have resources and can hear the truth from those with lived experience, for the able-bodied community to learn and help us raise awareness and for the research community so they can stay connected to what people need researched. This week we continue our kids series by talking to the co-founders of F.A.C.E, Abigail Aldridge! She graduated as a conductive practitioner from the UK in 2008. Since then she has worked in London, Ireland, Mauritius and then moved to Canada in 2010. She was working in Toronto until 2014, when she gained permanent residency and immediately knew she had to be closer to the mountains. She never thought she would stay long term in Canada until she moved to Alberta. She joined Families of Alberta for Conductive Education in 2016, and took over running the organization with her board of directors in 2017. Alongside her career she has been teaching dance and yoga to the greater and special needs community. Abigail has volunteered her time in Vietnam with 'No Ordinary Journey foundation', educating medical professionals on alternative methods of handling children with cerebral palsy. If you're not impressed with all of that, she has volunteered in Uganda and India working with children in orphanages and foster care, to assist with their development if limited within their movement. We are so impressed by Abigail and her team of practitioners with all that they have done with FACE. We hope you enjoy the episode and if you have any questions please contact them at (587) 830-3223 or reach out to them through their social media: Instagram: @abconductiveed and @face_olympics Facebook: FACE-Families of Alberta for Conductive Education and FACE Olympics Fundraiser 2021 If you have any questions, comments or suggestions for future episodes use the anonymous form at https://www.reyu.ca/podcast.
