BROKE-ISH X MIP MASHUP: KEHINDE'S POLICE INTERVIEW, "COCONUT TRIAL," GOING BACK TO BLACK, BLACK RADICAL TRADITION, PUBLIC INTELLECTUALS - S2 EP10

Make it Plain

In this week's Black World News, Kehinde nearly got arrested. The police, a Black police officer (at that) politely invited Kehinde for a voluntary interview at the police station about a video he put online. The video was posted on YouTube two months ago called It's not a Crime to Call a "Coconut" a "Coconut." Posted in response to Marieha Hussain's arrest for carrying a placard during a pro-Palestine rally, depicting the faces of former Tory prime minister Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman, the former Tory home secretary, alongside coconuts under a tree on a beach. Since then she lost her job and was charged with a racially aggravated public order offense. Marieha's trial is next week: September 12, 2024, at 10 am, at Westminster Magistrates Court in London, and the rally will be around 9 am. Kehinde plans to be there. - In this week's official guest interview, Kehinde is joined by Erika Brown, co-host of the Broke-ish podcast, for a mashup between Make it Plain and Broke-ish podcasts (the recording will be available on Broke-ish at a later date).  They explore with respectful dialogue and disagreement: how to embody the values of the Black radical tradition in their work and podcasting and consider what public sociology and public scholarship are, and how they fit in as Black radical public intellectuals. They talk about the good, the bad, and the in-between. This podcast conversation has been partly funded by a grant Erika received from the Jane Nelson Institute for Women's Leadership at Texas University.  - Erika Brown started working in corporate America when she was 20 and built a career of almost 25 years in Marketing and Product Management. From the time she was a child, she vowed that no one would know more about her money than her. Erika lives with her husband and two daughters in suburban Dallas, TX where she enjoys chicken on the bone as much as possible. Erika is a PhD student in sociology at the Texas Women's University.  Broke-ish is about being broke—broke and Black in America. About all the unbelievable *ish that America has done to Black people to keep us in this broke-ish state.  How we've been in ways that personal finance tips and traditional financial literacy can't fix.  - BLACK WORLD NEWS LINKS It's not a crime to call a Coconut a Coconut, Kehinde's video on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZkD-e-b6Iw Policing terms like House Negro insults Black political thought, Kehinde's post on MIP https://make-it-plain.org/2021/02/19/policing-terms-like-house-negro-insults-black-political-thought/ - GUEST LINKS Broke-ish link tree https://t.co/piye1ySPrh Broke-ish Podcast https://brokeish.com/ Op-Ed in Yes Magazine False Prophets of Profit by Erika Brownhttps://www.yesmagazine.org/issue/truth/2024/09/04/false-prophets-of-profit - THE HARAMBEE ORGANISATION OF BLACK UNITY NEEDS YOU Harambee Organisation of Black Unity (Marcus Garvey Centre + Nicole Andrews Community Library, Birmingham, UK)https://www.blackunity.org.uk/ CAP25 - Convention of Afrikan People - Gambia - May 17-19, 2025 (Everyone's Welcome*) On Malcolm X's 100th birthday, the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity is bringing together those in Afrika and the Diaspora who want to fulfill Malcolm's legacy and build a global organization for Black people. KEY POINTS: - The influence of parents and grandparents on children's career choices - Learning to say "no" and prioritizing personal obligations - Some signs of being overwhelmed  - On communication and understanding your spouse's needs  - The value of having strong relationships  - On navigating shared callings in marriage  - The importance of trusting God's will - Trust, communication, and teamwork in marriage - The importance of unity in marriage and leadership - Dealing with trauma, isolation, and struggles together - Spiritual warfare and self-awareness for couples - How do we find a healthy community?  - Humility is key to a healthy relationship with God and others - Business partnerships with spouses, personal growth, and family balance  QUOTES: “How many times do marriages fall apart because people just don't even know how to support one another, nor do they know how to work together? It's easy for you just to think, oh, I can kill it, I can kill, I can kill it, in the same way that it's easy to love yourself. But it's harder to apply what you learned in the Bible with other people” - Preston Perry  “It's kind of a myth about marriage is that our significant other is supposed to be our everything. That's very intimidating for me [and] that's a lot of pressure for me to be someone's everything because I'm not.” – Erika Brown “We have similar gifts — we both are gifted to teach. We both are communicators [and] are creatives. So, we don't necessarily have tension when it comes to sharing a call, per se. I think we've had tension when one of us has a vision that the other doesn't feel like walking into. And so Preston will often have ideas that take me years to agree with.” – Jackie Hill Perry GUEST RESOURCES: Jackie Hill Perry | jackiehillperry.com  IG | @jackiehillperry Preston Perry | preston-perry.com IG | @preston_n_perry RESOURCES:  [SAVE YOUR SPOT!] Ready to elevate your real estate journey? How Are You Able To Work And Homeschool? With Erika Brown “How are you able to work AND homeschool your boys?” Erika Brown is asked this question at least once a week as they are out and about meeting people. Unfortunately, society pushes the idea that women must either work outside of the home or stay at home. The idea of doing both seems to be a foreign concept. Erika chooses to reject that ideology while being a part of a generation that blazes new trails and refuses to settle. Erika Brown leveraged her lucrative career in Real Estate to create the financial opportunity to unschool her boys. This journey has come with its share of difficulties, yet those times are trumped by the experiences and knowledge her boys are gaining. Erika invites you to follow her family as they use their businesses to assist in the unschooling process and educational journeys of their boys. It happens to the best of us. We devote so much time and energy growing our business and taking care of our loved ones that we end up having very little for ourselves. Erika Brown joins us today for an inspiring conversation about overcoming limiting beliefs and achieving breakthroughs. When she stopped saying no to deals she didn't understand, Erika was able to scale quickly and build a multi-million dollar real estate empire. She talks about how she's managing her personal life in an unconventional way and opens up about how she healed from emotional burnout by reconnecting with her true self.  Through her own experience of being a homeowner and investor, Erika has worked in every aspect of the business representing sellers, buyers, investors, and financing. Not only is Erika a successful realtor and real estate investor coach, she is also a mom of three handsome boys and a wife to her best friend. Quotes • “I just focused on at least knowing the next two steps. And then I trusted that, between my network or between my resourcefulness, I could figure out the rest.” (15:20-15:36) • “I would say to not just focus on the negatives, but to push through and focus on the overall goal in which you're working to because the reward is so much greater on the other side.” (18:00-18:13) • “Your team can look like how you want it to look.” (18:41-18:43) • “I stopped carrying everybody else's stuff. That's the biggest mindset ‘cause I no longer could. I was breaking down.” (26:54-27:01) • “It's a matter of compartmentalization. I think that is healthy to have it because if not, then you will just kind of drag through life.” (33:36-33:46) • “When we're burned out, we're no good for anyone. We are operating just out of exhaustion." Life flexibility. The one thing all of us look for when we start our entrepreneurial journey's. My guest Erika Brown may have perfected what that looks like. She is an unschooling mom of 3, serial entrepreneur, real estate agent, and property manager. She is dedicated to rethinking what our lives could look like. Erika, like many of us, had a rocky start to her entrepreneurship journey. She has since been able to create a flexible lifestyle for her family, that includes frequent vacations, time off, ability to explore other passions, and instilling a well balanced family life. She does this by challenging what society deems as "normal" for what life should look like. Instead, she offers an alternative to what life could look like through business and real estate.Listen to the full episode to learn more. Do you need to be rich to buy a rental property? Arguably, no. In reality, you don't need a lot of experience, know-how, or cash on hand to buy your first income property. But, you need to at least be resourceful, take advantage of your opportunities, and have the tenacity to follow through on your goals. If you have all those qualities, you may be a great real estate investor, or maybe you're today's guest, Erika Brown.Erika wasn't raised by real estate investors. No, this was a skill she had to learn completely on her own. In fact, she learned the real estate sales skill without even knowing it! When Erika moved to a new neighborhood in the Atlanta, Georgia area, she was consistently convincing friends to buy properties around her home. She passed these leads along to a local real estate agent until she realized she was casually handing over six figures in commissions. So, she went ahead and got her real estate license, and later turned a pocket listing into her first real estate investment. From there, she saw a profitable path laid out, all she needed was the partners, lending, and work to actualize it. Now, Erika is sitting on a sizable real estate portfolio, building purposeful and profitable businesses so she can employ members of her community and lead the wealth generation movement in her circle! In This Episode We Cover:When part-time agents should make the jump to full-time work (and how to do it)Quitting the corporate lifestyle to take on more risk as a real estate investorCashing out retirement accounts to fund your first (or next) dealGetting around common real estate roadblocks that lead rookie investors to failHaving a “purpose-first” business model so you can build wealth and upgrade your communityWhy every investor must “do what the wealthy do” to succeed in real estateAnd So Much More!Links from the Show:BiggerPockets WebsiteBiggerPockets PodcastBiggerPockets Live Q&ABiggerPockets ConferenceBiggerPockets ForumsTEDx Talks: How to Succeed at Doing Anything | David Greene | TEDxRosevilleAirbnbMLS (Multiple Listing Service)The Last Dance - A docuseries that chronicles the rise of superstar Michael Jordan and the 1990s Chicago BullsPeerspaceFacebook GroupsCheck the full show notes here: https://www.biggerpockets.com/show572See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Amber and I discuss her career as an attorney and how she uses her voice to demystify information. Amber shares what it means to divest from white supremacy, how racial capitalism affects Black people, Black pain being profitable, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) being trendy. Amber also shares:   why we must speak about pay inequity in the workplace why labor is not aspirational silence being a tool for white supremacy. Amber is an attorney, speaker, writer, abolitionist. These are just a few words that describe Amber Webb Sims. Asa trial lawyer with nearly 100 first chair jury trials, Amber is among the top attorneys in Texas as measured by actual cases tried. But her gift and passion are empowering people through making complicated, intimidating information understandable, engaging, practical, and fun. This passion has extended beyond the courtroom to topics such as theology, politics, and social justice. After graduating from The Hockaday School in 2003, Amber got a B.A. in Political Science from The George Washington University. Afterwards, she obtained her Doctor of Jurisprudence, cum laude, from Texas Tech University School of Law. She worked briefly as an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas County during the tenure of Craig Watkins, the first African-American elected District Attorney in the State of Texas. Her primary field of practice is insurance defense litigation, and Amber has worked in a top insurance defense law firm as well as for three of the largest carriers in the country. Amber currently works as Assistant Vice President, Senior Legal Counsel in Litigation for AT&T, and her responsibilities include handling personal injury, premises liability, catastrophic loss, wrongful death, and commercial dispute cases in the six states that make up old Southwestern Bell.
