Through several instances of her athletic background, she felt the ebbs and flows with nutrition on performance.  She knew she was destined to help other athletes benefit from the implementation of optimal nutrition. Aside from working as a board certified specialist in sports dietetics, Kelsey has worked in the clinical arena with a multitude of different medical complexities through her experiences in working in acute care and one the country's largest spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation centers, Brooks Rehabilitation.   She currently is a consulting dietitian with four division 1 NCAA programs and works 1:1 with athletes of all levels in a private practice setting.   Her current interests in the field include preparing for endurance racing, optimizing gut health, nutrition to support injury healing, and accomplishing hormonal balance through proper nutrition. Her greatest accomplishment is having success within my own business, Meteor Nutrition, where I help athletes learn how to fuel to meet their health and performance goals. I am so proud of it because many of these athletes have been told very different messages about how to fuel (or not fuel) their body. Through educating them and working together, they are able to meet their full potential as athletes and have longevity in their sports. Interesting Story: I had a rather challenging, unsuccessful college soccer experience. Since the time I was 3, there was no place I'd rather be but the soccer field. Therefore, having a tough experience once I got to the collegiate level was really challenging. My sophomore year, I had multiple concussions and between not being fulfilled and injured, I transferred and quit playing. I started running as a means of staying in shape and meeting friends. I got a part-time job at Lululemon Athletica and was invited to run a 50K. I had no idea how long that was in miles and said yes. Out on the course, I fell in love with racing and started signing up for races shortly after. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing coach, Matt, who helped me develop in the sport as an adult considering that I didn't run in high school or college. He is still my coach and has helped me qualify twice for the Trials.Favorite Post-race Indulgence: WineFavorite Breakfast: Belgian waffles with either berries or chocolate chips and yogurt with maple syrupFavorite Motivational Quote: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face." - Mike TysonFavorite Running Memory: Vacation to Crested Butte with my friends where my husband proposedTo contact the Youth Sports Safety Update PodcastJAXSMP.com Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program or JSMP3563 Philips Highway, Building E, Suite 502, Jacksonville, FL 32207Email: Jim.mackie@bmcjax.com 904-477-9291Email: Robert.Sefcik@bmcjax.com Executive Director JSMP & CEO / President FASMED 904-202-4332Florida Alliance for Sports Medicine https://fasmed.fadss.org/

Compliance Perspectives

By Adam Turteltaub Most every compliance team would like the helpline to ring more, and Brooks Rehabilitation was no different, explains Compliance Operations Manager Christine Davenport (LinkedIn). To increase call volume they adopted a snappy slogan – “Better call compliance” – and put together a full marketing campaign to support it. The efforts paid off big, doubling the number of calls over four years. It wasn't the slogan alone that helped. Central to their success was the combination of good internal marketing along with a serious behind the scenes effort to ensure that calls were acted on. The team captured data on which line of business the call came from, type of issue and what response was provided. The data was kept on a shared drive to streamline the process and make it simple to spot a repeated question. This both saved work and decreased the time of response. Common areas of employee concerns included HIPAA and receiving gifts from patients. When responding to calls, the compliance team, wherever possible, included information about the underlying regulatory requirement. This helped provide employees with context and enabled them to better educate themselves. The compliance team also looked beyond the questions and treated the calls as a way to start a conversation and reassure employees that calling didn't automatically get them or someone else in trouble. Listen in to learn more about their efforts and get some ideas about how to convince your workforce it better call compliance.

Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy Podcast

OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast speaks with Rachel Groves and Ray Forsythe, Co-Founders of the Young Empowered Stroke Survivors (YESS) Foundation. They walk us through their experiences as stroke survivors and the challenges they overcame during their recovery. They also share how their foundation assists young stroke survivors and how best to support the foundation.   EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Rachel is a nurse practitioner. She was 32 years old and married with two young children when she suffered from a bilateral vestibular stroke that made her temporarily lose her ability to see, talk, and walk. Rachel still gets stroke symptoms occasionally, but she and her family have learned to live with her “quirks.” However, she no longer can work full-time due to cognitive fatigue which affects her ability to think, process, and speak.  According to the American Heart Association, between 2000 and 2010, the number of people aged 25 to 44 who were hospitalized with stroke increased nearly 43%. Those numbers have gone up since COVID. According to a national survey, three out of four adults would delay seeking medical care after experiencing warning symptoms or a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Ray was 41, married with 6 children, at the top of his career in the automotive luxury industry, and in peak health when he had a hemorrhagic stroke located in the central brain stem. It temporarily affected his ability to speak, see, and function. He wasn't expected to live and if he did, he wouldn't be able to walk or speak. He pushed himself during his inpatient rehab at Brooks Rehabilitation. The true challenge came when he was discharged because he had no one to talk and he felt lost.   He first met Rachel at a stroke awareness event in 2019. They founded the YESS Foundation out of sheer frustration as they discovered a lack of support for young stroke survivors.   They want to step out, pay it forward, and make a difference. They believe you choose to become a victim or a victor. It takes grit, persistence, and dedication. Within the foundation, both Rachel and Ray run support groups. Aside from financial or medical support, stroke survivors want people to listen to them and understand what they are going through. Ray and Rachel have relied on friends and family for financial support, and they have also invested their own money into the foundation. There were several fundraising events planned but then COVID happened. Currently, they're receiving funding from private donors.  You can donate to the YESS Foundation through the website or Amazon Smile. See the Resources section for the website link.  They are planning a kickstart event with the Seattle Seahawks, where Ray's son plays football.  They're also working on a Buddy Support program with UCF where speech therapy and physical therapy students accompany families on outings to help with patient care so family members can relax.  The YESS Foundation is looking for volunteers to deliver meals, bring stroke survivors to appointments, and provide “buddy support.” 3 KEY POINTS: The YESS Foundation is a grassroots nonprofit that promotes stroke awareness in young people and helps support young stroke survivors on their recovery journey. Running a nonprofit and raising money to keep it going is tough. It's just like running a business but profits are distributed across the nonprofit to fund its services. The YESS Foundation is accepting financial aid and volunteers so the foundation can provide a variety of services to help not only stroke survivors but also their families. TWEETABLE QUOTES: “It doesn't matter how big or small - whether it's a donation or time - it's all helpful and it's positively impacting families.” - Rachel Groves “It's not tangible items these stroke survivors want. They want somebody to understand what they're going through” - Ray Forsythe RESOURCES: YESS Foundation website: https://yessfoundation.org/ #HealthcareEntrepreneurAcademy #healthcare #HealthcareBoss #entrepreneur #entrepreneurship #podcast #youngstrokesurvivor #strokeawareness  #strokerecovery #strokeriskfactors #ucfalumni

The Conscious Clinician Podcast

Hosts Dr. Monika Stefanowicz & Dr. Sammy Steele welcome us to The Conscious Clinician Podcast! Sammy introduces us to the origin story of the podcast when the pair worked closely together as mentee/mentor. Their vision for the podcast is “to help pelvic floor physical therapists create an enjoyable and sustainable practice through the lens of exploring relationships with patients/clients.”  Monika shares, “we think that relationships are at the very heart of healing.” However, most pelvic health therapists receive minimal training on the interpersonal aspects of patient care. These soft skills are essential in pelvic health, given the intimacy and complexity of the issues people present with. They hope to shed light on burnout, resilience, and a paradigm shift that encompasses psychologically informed care.  Next, each host highlights the experiences which led to this change in perspective.  Dr. Sammy Steele, DPT is a pelvic health physical therapist practicing in an outpatient clinic in Davis, CA. She graduated from UC San Francisco and San Francisco state in 2019 with her DPT. She describes feeling burned out and emotionally exhausted with pelvic health during her first year of clinical practice. At the time, she had 1:1 mentoring with Dr. Monika for a trimester as part of the Agile Women's Health Physical Therapy program. Sammy opened up about her experiences and the two embarked on an exploration of relationships between provider/patient. They focused on professional boundaries, processing emotions, examining biases, and challenging assumptions. These tools helped Sammy embrace a new paradigm of patient care and become more resilient in her work. She's excited that “this podcast is addressing a missing link in what we do, and hopefully providing a space that's sacred for people to explore these topics.” Dr. Monika Stefanowicz, DPT, WCS is a pelvic health physical therapist practicing exclusively telehealth out of Austin, TX. She graduated from Springfield College in 2013 with her Bachelor's and again in 2015 with her DPT. She describes similar feelings of burnout during her residency at Brooks Rehabilitation in 2016/2017. “I didn't realize reliving people's trauma with them was affecting my well being because I thought it was the stress of residency.” This connection dawned on her while working with a personal relationship coach. As she studied codependency and healthy relationships, she began changing the way she practiced. Mentoring Sammy accelerated these changes “10X” as she was able to observe the relationships between PT and patient.  Both of them felt compelled to create a sacred space for pelvic health providers to start and explore the interpersonal and spiritual aspects of care. And so The Conscious Clinician Podcast was born! At the same time, they are clear on the scope of this podcast: “We are not trying to become psychologists. We want to bring psychology into pelvic health because the mind, body, [spirit] connection is so strong.”  They end with a lighthearted lightning round of questions for each other. Tune in to find out their favorite drinks, books, alternate career options, and definitions of a Conscious Clinician. Ever thought about how or why we breathe? Or what happens when something interrupts the natural, automatic process? In this episode we had the opportunity to sit down with Tommy Sutor, MS, PhD, CSCS is currently a post-doctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Joshua Yarrow studying spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Tommy's first experience working with people with spinal cord injuries was as a trainer and Program Director at Push to Walk in New Jersey. After this, he obtained a PhD from the University of Florida. His dissertation involved investigating how breathing and walking interact after spinal cord injury, and the use of acute intermittent hypoxia to improve breathing and sitting function in people with spinal cord injury at Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville, Florida. His career aspirations include conducting studies examining the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of combining emerging neuromodulation techniques with activity-based training, and to work collaboratively with people studying neural regeneration to ultimately help cure spinal cord injury. Some of the topics we cover are: What muscles do we use of inspiration? What are the mechanics – what moves when? What muscles do we use for expiration? Coughing? What are the mechanics – what moves when? What controls breathing? Many of us have heard C3,4,5 keeps the diaphragm alive but are there other areas of importance? How does it all tie together? Why is breathing impaired following a spinal cord injury? What is respiratory strength training? Have there been studies done on respiratory strength training and complete injuries? If so what were the findings? What are the benefits of Respiratory Strength Training? Is there an ideal/ optimal dose for RST to see improvement? Are there Respiratory Strength Training devices available? What's the difference between a threshold device and a resistive device? If you are interested in more about Tommy and his research please reach out to us or have a listen to a recent webinar he helped deliver about the importance of respiratory strength training for people with spinal cord injury, which can be viewed here: https://www.pnmedical.com/breather-university/respiratorystrengthtraining-spinalcordinjury/ If you have any questions, comments or suggestions for future episodes use the anonymous form at https://www.reyu.ca/podcast. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we have some of the most amazing scenery and outdoor options in the country. So why do all your rehab in a clinic? Today's guest is Physical Therapist, Dr. Carol-Ann Nelson, the Founder and Executive Director of Destination Rehab in Bend Oregon. For those not familiar with the geography here, Bend is in the middle of Oregon, about a 6-hour drive South East of Seattle. It's surrounded by mountains, volcanoes, forests, a river and wildlife. It's an absolutely gorgeous city and region that I'd encourage anyone to visit. Destination Rehab combine PT with outdoor activities, taking advantage of all Central Oregon has to offer. They have year round program for folks in the area, and they offer week long Rehab Vacations for folks with neuro conditions who want to travel to the area. Participants include stroke survivors plus folks with MS, Parkinson's, TBI, Spinal Cord Injury, and other conditions. Bio Carol-Ann's love for the outdoors began during her years growing up in Oregon. She has enjoyed backpacking, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, hiking and running in mountains and rivers across the country. While in graduate school, she realized her passion to utilize physical therapy to help people with disabilities and chronic conditions engage in the outdoors and in their local community. In 2016 she founded Destination Rehab, a nonprofit organization that takes physical therapy principles out of the clinic walls and into the outdoors. Their focus is to build confidence, independence and improve quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities and chronic conditions.  Carol-Ann received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Duke University and practiced in the Neuro Recovery Center at Brooks Rehabilitation before returning to her home state of Oregon in 2015. She specializes in treating patients with a variety of complex neurologic conditions including Stroke, Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis. Carol-Ann serves as Vice President of the Oregon Physical Therapy Association, and is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association's Neurologic Section. Carol-Ann and her husband have four year old twins, a six month old baby girl, and an energetic border collie. Carol-Ann is passionate about helping others dream big and gain the confidence they need to enjoy being active and outdoors. Hack of the Week Make your lamps into touch lamps.
