In this podcast, Abigail Bond and Sarah Phillimore of St John's Chambers Family & Divorce team discuss the issues relating to learning disabled parents in care proceedings and what has changed in approach and practice over the past 20 years. They will also look at how far we have come since the The Good Practice Guidance on Working with Learning Disabled Parents published in 2007.
In this episode we speak with Jeremy Hay, Chief Executive Officer, and Simon Steed, Your Voice Engagement Manager at Talkback UK, about the challenges that their charity is facing as they seek to support autistic people and people with learning disabilities. We talk about how working with councils and other charities is helping them to deliver their work and how they are working with businesses to meet their member's needs.
Giving and Taking Voice in Learning Disabled Theatre (Routledge, 2023) offers unique insight into the question of 'voice' in learning disabled theatre and what is gained and lost in making performance. It is grounded in the author's 18 years of making theatre with Different Light Theatre company in Christchurch, New Zealand, and includes contributions from the artists themselves. This book draws on an extensive archive of performer interviews, recordings of rehearsal processes, and informal logs of travelling together and sharing experience. These accounts engage with the practical aesthetics of theatre-making as well as their much wider ethical and political implications, relevant to any collaborative process seeking to represent the under- or un-represented. Giving and Taking Voice in Learning Disabled Theatre asks how care and support can be tempered with artistic challenge and rigour and presents a case for how listening learning disabled artists to speech encourages attunement to indigenous knowledge and the cries of the planet in the current socio-ecological crisis. This is a vital and valuable book for anyone interested in learning disabled theatre, either as a performer, director, dramaturg, critic, or spectator. Shu Wan is currently matriculated as a doctoral student in history at the University at Buffalo. As a digital and disability historian, he serves in the editorial team of Digital Humanities Quarterly and Nursing Clio. On Twitter: @slissw. Learn more about your ad choices. 8 Million students in grades 4-12 cannot comprehend grade level reading material. 440 Thousand students sitting in American classrooms K-12 have a total reading vocabulary of less than fifty words. 3 Thousand students drop out of school each day. 40 Percent of African-American and Latino students will not graduate on time or with a regular high school diploma. 25 Times the likelihood that non-readers and high school students testing below the twentieth percentile will drop out of school. Every day students across the country are being labeled and put into "special" programs. The gap between those students and their peers reading at grade level simply continues to grow until the gap seems too large to overcome. Often these students begin acting out in class because they have learned that it is better to go one on one with the principal versus being embarrassed and frustrated in front of their peers. It is not the fault of the student, teacher, or parent. We must stop looking for the reason to justify the failure and find a way to over come it. Simply labeling students Dyslexic, Learning Disabled, and Autistic will not offer them a reading solution. These students do not need remediation; they need an accelerated compensatory approach to mastering language and reading skills. Dr. Joe Lockavitch has been in the trenches with non-readers, their families, and their teachers for over thirty years. Students in the bottom reading percentiles (0-15th %) are slipping through the cracks right before our eyes. Based on his experiences in the classroom with non-readers, Dr. Lockavitch (former college professor, school psychologist, special education director) researched and developed a new reading methodology targeting non-readers of all ages. Highly structured, repetitious, and non-phonic, The Failure Free Reading Methodology is an accelerated language program designed to give students, parents, and teachers the hope and the results they deserve. Dr. Lockavitch has seen it all. Throughout his career he has given reading demonstrations in places that have ranged from the heart of the Mississippi Delta, inner city schools in Detroit and Chicago, maximum-security prisons in South Carolina, and after school programs in Los Angeles, California. He will only do a demonstration under one condition and make only one claim, "I'll only work with your worst students. If you don't see immediate improvement in their reading ability within 30 minutes, I'll walk out the door." He hasn't walked out yet. Dr. Joseph F. Lockavitch, a former classroom teacher, school psychologist, university professor, special education director, and applied researcher, is the author and developer of: The Failure Free Reading Program, Don't Close the Book on Your Not-Yet Readers, Joseph's Readers Talking Software for Non-Readers, Verbal Master-An Accelerated Vocabulary Program, and The Test of Lateral Awareness and Directionality. Dr. Lockavitch is also the author of numerous published research articles. Dr. Lockavitch has spent the past thirty years training thousands of teachers, parents and administrators across the nation on how to meet the unique needs of America's non-readers. Featured on the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and mentioned on national radio shows such as: Tom Joyner, Dr. Laura, Mike Gallagher, and Michael Medved, Dr. Lockavitch holds a Doctorate of Education from Boston University and a Master of Science in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State. My guest today is an Entrepreneur speaker, author, and a self made multimillionaire. Allen Weinstein had never been given much of a chance to succeed. He couldn’t read until he was thirteen and was labeled and written off by the education system. Failure after failure in school sentenced him to a bleak future. Yet Allen found a way to overcome his learning disabilities and shocked everyone around him by ultimately graduating from the University of Kansas with a degree in architecture. He never gave up on himself. He says, his out of the box learning helped make him an out of the box thinker, in business. In fact He believes if it wasn't for his learning disabilities He never would have been the success he is today. He forged a philosophy of life from his experiences that has carried him through the best and worst of times. In his book, Memoirs of a Learning Disabled, Dyslexic Multi-Millionaire, Allen tells his story and shares his lessons from life. If you've ever despaired about the difficulties life has handed out to you and if you want to discover how to triumph over adversity this is the book to read. One of Allen's favourite sayings is " Your mind is like a computer be careful who's programing it.” In our conversation Allen shared the ways he choses to think and act that have created the wealth he values most, good health, an inquiring mind and the love and support of his family. I hope you enjoy the conversation.

The day Archie Willard lost his thirty-one year job as a laborer, he was forced to confront the secret he had held so closely for most of his life: at the age of fifty-four he couldn't read. Now having to support his family he had to face the truth. Anxious to tell his story and spread his passion for advocating literacy, Archie Willard, a "new reader" asked his friend, Colleen Wiemerslage, a retired educator and writer to write his memoir for him. Colleen agreed and Last Reader Standing was birthed. This book tells the story of Archie's painful but amazing journey as a dyslexic becoming literate at middle age. It is a touching and poignant story that gives us an eye-opening view of the lack of literacy in our society, and how important it is for all of us to have the opportunity to become all that we can be. Archie Willard emerged to become a national and international figure who continues to enlighten professionals into the world of the learning disabled. He joined Barbara Bush on stage for her Literacy Foundation's fundraiser where she proudly introduced him as "the man who took advantage of a second chance and improved his life." Archie Willard and Colleen Wiemerslage are both with us today to tell us about this uplifting, enlightening, inspiring story.
