Yes, I’m old enough to remember when the term “spring break” was primarily for college students. Apparently, spring break now extends to giving the entire week off to high school, middle school and even the elementary school kids, too. My long-suffering sports wife works a schedule based on our local school calendar. Last week, we visited one of our sons (and two of our grandsons) prior to heading to Gulf Shores, Alabama for a few more days of vacationing. We had loads of fun but not enough time to keep up with sports. Never fear! We will catch-up right now. March Madness – Men The University of Miami (Ohio) Redhawks were the lone unbeaten men’s team in the nation coming into last week’s Mid-American Conference tournament. The 20th ranked Redhawks took their perfect 31-0 record into last week’s opening round game against the University of Massachusetts (17-16). Miami was only the fifth men’s college hoops team in the past 25 years to post a perfect regular season record. Until Thursday. U Mass took the lead with 30 seconds left to hand the Redhawks an 87-83 loss. Would you believe that some of TV’s talking heads actually felt that 31-1 Miami should be left out of the 68-team NCAA Men’s tournament field? Some of those same people suggested that a 17-16 Auburn Tigers team (just 7-11 in SEC play) should have received Miami’s spot in the tournament field. Perhaps this is why we call it madness For those who favor March Madness invitations going to sub-500 big conference schools like Auburn, please name the last time any team with less than 20 regular season wins made it into the Final Four. I’ll wait while you ask your favorite search engine. Answer: Zero. I understand that Auburn played a really tough slate of non-conference games. The Tigers lost to top-ten teams such as Houston, Michigan, and Purdue in the opening months. However, Auburn also lost eight of ten SEC games played during the final weeks of the regular season. If Auburn cannot beat teams in the SEC, why should they deserve to play for the national championship? However, what have the Miami Redhawks done to deserve a bid? Good question! Miami (Ohio) plays in the Mid-American Conference. That conference has never produced a men’s basketball team which has reached the Final Four. Miami posted a solid 25-9 record last year. Prior to 2025, the Redhawks had not won 20 games in a season since March, 1999. The school is not (yet) a basketball juggernaut. This year’s team raced to a 31-0 start featuring six games which Miami won by three points or less. Yes, they have been lucky at times, but they were also very good. The Runnin’ Redhawks have scored 100 or more points in eight games this season. The NCAA “rewarded” 31-1 Miami of Ohio with a play-in game on Wednesday night against 20-13 SMU. Tipoff will be at 8:15 PM CDT on TruTV. The winner advances to play #6 seed Tennessee (22-11) on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Auburn is playing in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) beginning tonight at 9PM CDT vs. South Alabama (20-11). McNeese State’s home court advantage led to a rout over #1 seed SFA Four years ago, the city of Lake Charles became the home city for the Southland Conference men’s basketball tournament. The games are played on the campus of McNeese State University. The host city’s Cowboys were already coming off back-to-back NCAA March Madness seasons. Unlike previous years, though, the 2026 top seed in the Southland Conference tournament was Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks posted a nifty 20-2 conference record to edge McNeese by one game for the men’s #1 seed in the tournament. These two teams (both 28-5 for the season) met in last week’s conference finale. The hometown McNeese fans packed the gymnasium to standing-room only capacity and cheered their team to a resounding 76-59 win over #1 seed SFA. The Lumberjacks fell behind by 20 points early in the second half and never recovered. McNeese will enter its third straight NCAA men’s March Madness tournament as a #12 seed against #5 Vanderbilt of the SEC. That game will tip-off Thursday at 2:15 PM on TruTV. Stephen F. Austin accepted a bid into the NIT tournament and travels to face Tulsa in the opening round tonight (Tuesday) at 8 PM. March Madness – Women Historically, there has been a wide gap in women’s college basketball between the “haves” and the “not yet’s”. This year has been no different. The #1 overall seed U-Conn Huskies are the only remaining unbeaten women’s team entering this year’s March Madness women’s tourney. Connecticut (now 34-0) is a whopping 54-point favorite over #16 regional seed UT-San Antonio (18-15) in Round 1. Out west, #2 overall seed UCLA (31-1) is a 52-point favorite in their opening round game against #16 seed California Baptist (23-10). The other two top seeded women’s teams are a pair of 31-3 SEC teams – South Carolina and Texas. Both will be prohibitive favorites in their first round games, too. This wide gap between the top 16 teams and the rest of the women’s field is why the NCAA has continued to play the opening two rounds of their tournament in the home market of the top 16 teams. What just happened to Louisiana Tech’s Lady Techsters? Louisiana Tech’s women’s basketball program was one of the early giants of the sport. They won national titles in 1981, 1982, and 1988. The Lady Techsters remained a regular NCAA March Madness participant through the year 2006. Since then, Louisiana Tech’s women’s team has been in decline. The team had not made the NCAA tournament field in 20 years. This season’s Louisiana Tech women’s team was steamrolling opponents during their 19-game winning streak. The team was 26-5 and #1 seed in Conference USA entering Saturday afternoon’s title game in Huntsville, Alabama. Their opponent (21-12 and #6 seed Missouri State) has been playing in its very first Conference USA season. The winner would receive an automatic bid into the NCAA March Madness women’s field. The tournament finale was unable to produce one player on either team who shot better than 50% from the field. Tech clanked 15 of 66 shots into the basket (23%). Missouri State wasn’t much better with 17-52 from the field (33%). Final score – Missouri State 43, Louisiana Tech 38 This game stunk for the entire 40 minutes. (I know, because I watched all of it!) The Lady Bears of Missouri State (a deserving winner of this game) advanced into this week’s NCAA tournament as a #16 seed. Louisiana Tech accepted a bid into the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT). They will travel to Houston and play 28-5 Rice on Thursday. LSU women’s Coach Kim Mulkey told her assistant coach to hit the road Last week, LSU women’s assistant basketball coach Gary Redus was hired by Rutgers University of the Big Ten Conference. He offered to stick around Baton Rouge to help his boss, Kim Mulkey, prepare the #2 seed LSU Tigers in this week’s NCAA March Madness opening game(s) in Louisiana’s capitol city. Instead, Mulkey told him, “Get out of here!” Politely, that is. She added, “You can’t be married to two wives!” The LSU women’s coach advised her ex-assistant coach that Redus needed to spend the next few weeks getting to know his players at Rutgers in New Jersey. There is a good chance that another LSU basketball assistant (Daphne Mitchell) may also be joining Gary Redus’ new staff at Rutgers. What is happening to the defending champion LSU baseball team? LSU’s defending national college baseball champions have been playing like a group of neighborhood kids in a pick-up game at times. The team is struggling to find an identity. LSU lost two of three SEC games to Vanderbilt over the weekend in Nashville to drop to 14-7 on the season. That’s nearly half of the number of losses which LSU’s 2025 championship team posted in a 56-15 season. The pitching for this 2026 Tigers team ranks as worst in the 16-team SEC. They allow 5.24 earned runs per game. LSU pitchers have served-up a league-high 18 home runs through 21 games. The Bayou Bengals are dead last in the SEC in fielding, too. LSU has committed 25 errors in 21 games and have turned a league-low of five double plays. Yikes! Coach Jay Johnson is trying to remain positive and patient as his team contains a number of transfer players. LSU needs to complete its 2026 baseball chemistry experiments quickly. The Tigers play intrastate rival Grambling State University on Tuesday night in Baton Rouge prior to hosting an important SEC weekend series against #7 University of Oklahoma. The La Vernia varsity girls golf team competed in the Davenport tournament at the Buckhorn in Comfort. The girls placed ninth overall as a team. They were led by junior Brylee Mokry who shot a 72 and placed third in the tournament. The girls played well overall and will be back in action in Kerrville after the Thanksgiving break.Article Link
The La Vernia Lady Bears volleyball team members celebrate their State Semifinal Championship win Nov. 15 over Bellville. The La Vernia Lady Bear volleyball team was in action during the Labor Day weekend at the Aug. 28-30 Smithson Valley tournament in Comal ISD and came home with a fourth-place finish in this highly competitive tournament. La Vernia started with three straight wins on Thursday when they swept Hendrickson (25- 13, 25-12), Warren (25-17, 25-4), and Pieper (25-23, 26-24). Friday started with a loss to Johnson (21-25, 27- 25, 20-25) but ended with two straight wins against Madison (25-13, 25-19) and 4A playoff rival Davenport (19-25, 25-13, 25-23). The Antonian College Prep Lady Apaches put up a wall Aug. 26 against La Vernia as Lady Bear senior Layla Haddock (15) reaches to power the ball past the defense. The 5A Lady Apaches found their 4A hosts more than ready for the battle; the Lady Bears claimed a hard-fought victory, 3-2. Haddock racked up 15 kills against Antonian. Gene Durden:Overall, Coach Durden is going into his 36th season as a head coach. This past year the Lady Wolves achieved a 27 and 4 record before being eliminated in the "Final Four" of the 7A state tournament. Durden's Lady Wolves have played in ten of the past fifteen state championship games, while winning the state titles in 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2015, 2011, 2010 and 2009. The Lady Wolves were also state runners up in 2014 and 2012. This past season, Durden accomplished another milestone in his career by winning his 900th game on January 6th 2023. This victory put Durden as the winningest girls basketball coach in the state of Georgia Coach Nichole Dixon For the second year in a row, Coach Dixon has been named by the Atlanta Tipoff Club as the 2020 Pinholster Coach of the Year for Classes 1A through 4A. She will be presented with an award – date uncertain due to the unscheduled time off. Coach Dixon – also for the second year in a row – led her Lady Bears to another Class A – Private state title. HI topped St. Francis 66-53 in the championship game back on March 4th in Macon, which put the cap on a 26-5 season and another region title to go with the Georgia crown Coach Tim Slater Tim Slater led the Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) girls basketball team to the school's first state title, a 32-1 record and No. 6 spot in the MaxPreps Top 25. As Baylor basketball gears up for the NCAA Tournament as the 3-seed in the South Region, we preview their path to another Final Four. It starts with their a first-round matchup against 14-seed UC Santa Barbara which would be followed up in a Round-of-32 matchup by the winner of 6-seed Creighton and 11-seed NC State. The top two seeds in the South region are No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Arizona. The Baylor women's basketball team also will begin their NCAA tournament play this weekend, the Lady Bears' 19th straight appearance. The women earned a 7 seed this year, lower than usual. They will play 10-seed Alabama in the first round of the Seattle Regional, and would likely face off against 2-seed UConn if they were to make it to the Round of 32. The school made the announcement Thursday. The 63-year-old Brey has won 481 games since taking the Fighting Irish job in July 2000. Both his victory total and 23-year tenure are school records. Notre Dame went from stagnant program to NCAA Tournament regular. Brey also helped the Fighting Irish emerge as a title contender in two different conferences. After ending a five-year tourney drought last year, Notre Dame has struggled to a 9-8 record this season and is 1-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference games. The Fighting Irish held on despite scoring 31 fewer points than their average coming it. Clemson had a pair of chances to tie things in the final seconds, but Daisha Bradford missed both 3-pointers to send Notre Dame to its eighth win in the past nine games. The leak occurred in the arena's basement Thursday. James Harris, the chief of community relations and public information officer for the fire department, says two men believed to be in their 20s who had been near the leak suffered chemical burns. The fire department's hazmat team remained at the scene monitoring the situation an hour after the leak was sealed. The cause of the leak hasn’t been released. No events were scheduled for Thursday night. Elliot Uzelac announced his retirement from coaching after serving as head coach at Berrien Springs the past three seasons. Uzelac was 20-8 in his tenure with the Shamrocks. Uzelac came to the area in 2006 taking over a St. Joe program that had just gone 0-9 the year before. Turning around the Bears, going 6-5 in 2006, then a state semifinals appearance the next year going 12-1. Uzelac went 45-13 in five seasons at St. Joe. Uzelac then spent three seasons at Benton Harbor starting in 2015, revitalizing the Tigers program. going 20-11, including an undefeated 2016 regular season. MHSAA – High School Sports Last Night Boys Basketball BCS Our Lady of the lake 66, Covert 44 Our Lady of the Lake picked up their third straight win with a 66-44 win at Covert. Owen McLoughlin, who is our current WSJM Sports Player of the Week had a game high 43 points for the Lakers. McLoughlin connected on 11 three point shots, which breaks the Our Lady of the Lake school record. Matt Lage added 14 points for the Lakers. Marcus Preston had 18 points to lead Covert. Southwest 10 Hartford 72, Bloomingdale 52 Hartford got 27 points from Brody Johnson, including 6 triples as the Huskies improve to 5-1 on the season with a 72-52 win over Bloomingdale. Caiden Smith chipped in 16 for Hartford. SMAC Kalamazoo Central 63, Battle Creek Central 51 Girls Basketball SMAC St. Joseph 38, Portage Central 28 St. Joe outscored Portage Central 18-6 in the second quarter and never trailed for the rest of the night as the Lady Bears beat the Mustangs 38-28. Jaslynn Ward scored a game high 14 points for St. Joe. Eleah Hedstrom had 10 for the Lady Bears. Lakeshore 42, Portage Northern 33 Lakeshore got back in the win column with a 42-33 win at Portage Northern. The school made the announcement Thursday. The 63-year-old Brey has won 481 games since taking the Fighting Irish job in July 2000. Both his victory total and 23-year tenure are school records. Notre Dame went from stagnant program to NCAA Tournament regular. Brey also helped the Fighting Irish emerge as a title contender in two different conferences. After ending a five-year tourney drought last year, Notre Dame has struggled to a 9-8 record this season and is 1-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference games. The leak occurred in the arena's basement Thursday. James Harris, the chief of community relations and public information officer for the fire department, says two men believed to be in their 20s who had been near the leak suffered chemical burns. The fire department's hazmat team remained at the scene monitoring the situation an hour after the leak was sealed. The cause of the leak hasn’t been released. No events were scheduled for Thursday night. Elliot Uzelac announced his retirement from coaching after serving as head coach at Berrien Springs the past three seasons. Uzelac was 20-8 in his tenure with the Shamrocks. Uzelac came to the area in 2006 taking over a St. Joe program that had just gone 0-9 the year before. Turning around the Bears, going 6-5 in 2006, then a state semifinals appearance the next year going 12-1. Uzelac went 45-13 in five seasons at St. Joe. Uzelac then spent three seasons at Benton Harbor starting in 2015, revitalizing the Tigers program. going 20-11, including an undefeated 2016 regular season. Harbaugh has the second-ranked and unbeaten Wolverines positioned for a second straight appearance in the College Football Playoff following last week's win at No. 5 Ohio State. Michigan plays Purdue in the conference championship game Saturday in Indianapolis. Campbell was second in the Big Ten with 118 tackles and intercepted two passes as the anchor of the Hawkeyes’ defense. Campbell was the league's leading tackler in 2021. NCAAFB – Mike Sainristil’s switch to CB at Michigan proves to be wise Mike Sainristil wanted to have the ball in his hands to make plays at receiver when he chose to attend Michigan. Sainristil got his wish, scoring touchdowns in each of his first three seasons. But coach Jim Harbaugh asked Sainristil last spring to switch to cornerback, and it has proved to be a win-win move. The second-ranked Wolverines will likely line up Sainristil at times against standout receiver Charlie Jones on Saturday night when Michigan faces Purdue in the conference championship game in Indianapolis. NFL – Bears place Jackson on injured reserve with foot injury The Chicago Bears have placed safety Eddie Jackson on injured reserve because of a foot injury that could keep him out for the remainder of the season. The Bears are last in the NFC North with five games remaining. They've dropped five in a row and are coming off a loss to the New York Jets that was particularly painful. Leading receiver Darnell Mooney suffered a season-ending ankle injury that coach Matt Eberflus said Monday requires surgery. The Bears placed him on IR on Tuesday and signed practice squad defensive back A.J. Thomas to the active roster. WNBA – Russian diplomat says prisoner swap with US remains possible A senior Russian diplomat says Russia and the United States repeatedly came close to reaching agreement on a prisoner exchange and a deal remains possible before the year's end. The Biden administration has been trying for months to negotiate the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner and another American jailed in Russia, Paul Whelan, Asked Tuesday whether a swap was possible before the end of the year, Russia’s deputy foreign minister responded that “there always is a chance.” He reiterated Moscow's call for the U.S. to discuss the issue discreetly. Earlier this month, Griner began serving a nine-year sentence for drug possession at a penal colony about 350 kilometers (210 miles) east of Moscow. Golf – PGA – Tiger Woods doesn’t ‘have much left in this leg’ to compete Tiger Woods is painting an uncertain future when it comes to his golf and the friction in the golf world. Woods is at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas only as a tournament host. He says plantar fasciitis in his right foot makes it hard to walk. He says he doesn’t have much left in this leg. Woods played only three majors and nine rounds this year. He doesn’t expect to play much more than that. As for the animosity between the PGA Tour and Saudi-funded LIV Golf, Woods says there can be no way forward as long as Greg Norman is involved. MLB – Jeimer Candelario agrees to 1-year contract with Nationals Infielder Jeimer Candelario has agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals to give them someone to compete for the starting job at third base. The 29-year-old Candelario is a switch-hitter who is coming off a down year for the Detroit Tigers. He hit just .217 with a .272 on-base percentage in 2022. In 2021, Candelario tied for the major league lead with 42 doubles and batted .271 with a .351 on-base percentage, 16 homers and a career-best 67 RBIs. He was with the Chicago Cubs in 2016 and the start of 2017, then was traded to Detroit during the 2017 season. MLB – White Sox round out coaching staff under new manager Grifol The Chicago White Sox have rounded out their coaching staff under new manager Pedro Grifol, hiring José Castro as their hitting coach and Eddie Rodriguez as third base coach. They also announced Chris Johnson as assistant hitting coach, Mike Tosar as major league fielding coordinator and Geoff Head is senior director of sports performance. Daryl Boston returns as first base coach. Castro spent the past eight seasons as Atlanta's assistant hitting coach and was part of a staff that helped the Braves win the 2021 World Series. The 63-year-old Rodriguez has 40 years of professional coaching experience, the past three as Kansas City's minor-league field coordinator. He was the Royals' third-base coach from 2011-13. Pulisic sprawled on the field and was replaced at the start of the second half. The U.S. Soccer Federation said after the game the American star was taken to a hospital for an abdominal scan. The Americans play the Netherlands on Saturday with the chance to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. Iran has failed to advance in all six of its World Cup appearances. Senegal 2, Ecuador 1 – Koulibaly’s goal puts Senegal into round of 16 at World Cup Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly put his team into the last 16 of the World Cup by volleying home the winner in a 2-1 victory over Ecuador. Koulibaly scored three minutes after Moises Caicedo had evened the score at 1-1. Senegal took the lead after a first-half penalty by Ismaila Sarr. Caicedo scored his goal in the 67th. Ecuador would have advanced from Group A and Senegal would have been eliminated if the score stayed 1-1. The Netherlands beat Qatar 2-0 in the other match to win the group. Senegal finished second while Ecuador and Qatar were eliminated. Netherlands 2, Qatar 0 – Netherlands beats host Qatar 2-0 to advance at World Cup The Netherlands finished off the worst showing by any World Cup host nation by beating Qatar 2-0. The Dutch advanced to the round of 16 by winning Group A while the already eliminated Qataris became the first host to lose all three of its group games at soccer's biggest event. Cody Gakpo put the Netherlands ahead midway through the first half with his third goal in as many matches and Frenkie de Jong doubled the advantage five minutes into the second half. The Netherlands is a three-time runner-up at the World Cup and also finished third in 2014. Qatar was making its tournament debut. England 3, Wales 0 – England advances after beating Wales 3-0 at World Cup Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden both scored to put England into the last 16 of the World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Wales. England coach Gareth Southgate opted to put both players in the starting lineup for the team's final Group B match and they responded with all three goals. England will next face Senegal in the round of 16. Wales finished in last place in the group and has been eliminated. Southgate had faced calls to freshen up his team after the 0-0 draw with the United States. He brought in Rashford and Foden into a new look attack and it worked. FIFA has picked her for Germany vs. Costa Rica on Thursday in Qatar. FIFA also picked two women as assistants to Frappart to complete an all-female refereeing team on the field. They are Neuza Back of Brazil and Mexico's Karen Diaz Medina. FIFA also picked Kathryn Nesbitt of the United States to work at the Al Bayt Stadium as the offside specialist in the video review team. FIFA made the historic appointments for the 44th of the 64 games being played in Qatar. FIFA – Croatia charged after fans taunt Canadian World Cup player A disciplinary case has been opened against Croatia at the World Cup after the team's fans taunted a Canada player with Serbian family ties. FIFA says the charge against the Croatian soccer federation was “due to the behavior of its fans.” It cited rules relating to discrimination and security at games. Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan was born in an ethnic Serbian region of Croatia that was part of the conflict that split the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Jackie Stiles is one of the most renowned basketball players in the history of the women's game. From her roots in Claflin, Kansas, she led the country in scoring. Then to Southwest Missouri State University, she rewrote the NCAA women's basketball record books en route to leading the Lady Bears to the 2001 Final Four. Finally to a professional career in the WNBA, Jackie has inspired and impacted millions. Here's a sneak peek into her story: “I noticed sometime in October that I was not seeing very well, especially at night. I had Lasik eye surgery done in 2003. I had always heard that after 10 years you sometimes need a touch up. While I was home for Thanksgiving, I asked my mom, who is a school nurse, to check my vision. My left eye was 20/40 and my right eye was 20/30. She told me I should probably go to the eye doctor. Then I noticed in practices that I had to really focus in order to catch a ball coming from across the court. My depth perception seemed off. This started to bother me. I had not signed up for vision coverage on my insurance this year, so I thought maybe I would wait until the following year to go see the doctor. I decided to flip a coin. I know this sounds crazy but I have a system of flipping best two out of three when I cannot decide on something. It told me to go to the eye doctor.” Tune in for the rest! We kick off our second year of the Rebound series with Jackie Stiles! Jackie is one of the most celebrated basketball players in college basketball history. She became the all-time leading scorer for women's college basketball while leading Southwest Missouri State to the 2001 Final Four. She was an All-American in college, drafted 4th overall in the 2001 WNBA Draft, and would become the WNBA Rookie of the Year. In this episode, Jackie discusses her upbringing in the small town of Claflin, Kansas. How did an injury in high school, which could have derailed her goals but helped adjust her mindset? This new focus and drive led to her being recruited by some of the most significant programs in college basketball, including national powerhouse Connecticut. Why did she choose Southwest Missouri State over Connecticut? She talks about her college career, including the numerous scoring records she set and how it felt to cut down the nets after leading the Lady Bears to the Final Four. She also walks us through her experience of being inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. With all of the success, Jackie has had to overcome some obstacles. Injuries led to her career being cut short. She also opens up about her struggles with ocular melanoma.
