PhD Candidate Jen Fleeton on Working With Paralympians as an S&C Coach

Jen Fleeton joins us on today’s episode. Jen is a strength and conditioning specialist and current PhD candidate at the University of Sydney who has managed the S&C for the range of parathletes from the amatuer all the way up to paralympians who brought home gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympics.   Jen and Mark discuss how working with para-athletes differs from able bodies athletes, and the considerations that come into play when working with CP athletes in particular. Most importantly, which Jen mentions a few times is the ability to have honest conversations with your para-athlete and the willingness to admit that something hasn’t worked for your adaptation, then move on and try another method. With such a diverse range of specificities CP athletes can experience, there is no one-size fits all method, and this challenge although difficult, is incredibly rewarding. Selwyn Griffith joins Mark on today’s episode. The two discuss accelerated hamstring reconditioning in team sport athletes. Selwyn, who has been with the Brisbane Lions Football Club for 8 years, has worked in a number of roles from osteopathy in the medical team, before transitioning to the performance department to work with the strength and conditioning coaches, and then head of rehab before finally landing in his current role as Performance coach.    Selwyn and Mark discuss a more aggressive approach to reconditioning for his athletes who compete at the highest level in the AFL. Selwyn, who believes that athletes “aren’t going to get stronger lying on a table” has endorsed the prevention process in the gym setting to build robustness.   The statistics have proved Selwyn and his team are on the right track, with far lower rates of injury and reinjury for the players at the Lions, and he is confident in the system to build trust and bring the players into the process by getting them back on the training track as early as possible.   A true leader of industry who is aiding the Brisbane Lions, but also the wider sports science community in its drive forward with scientific based strength and conditioning programs. If only every club were lucky enough to have their own Selwyn!   Team Contact Email us at team@tswspodcast.com for guest recommendations or any questions you want answered about previous guests or research we’ve discussed. Before we get to the show notes please consider donating to Australian charities and organisations as a show of support for the disaster relief. The Australian bushfires have significantly eclipsed the environmental effect of both the recent Californian and Amazon fires. The relief effort will take years and the environment in the affected areas may never be the same. More than one hundred fires still burn around the country, as both people and wildlife are displaced or killed.   Below are the links for RFS NSW and the Red Cross if you’d like to learn more about the situation or have the capacity to donate - it all counts.   RFS - https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer/support-your-local-brigade Red Cross - https://fundraise.redcross.org.au/drr   Thank you for the support, from all over the world! ------------------------------------   Today’s episode features the gut health whizz, Dr Orla O’Sullivan. Orla is a Research Fellow in Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark and graduated from UCC with a BSc in Biochemistry and subsequently a PhD in Bioinformatics. Her research focuses on elucidating the microbiome from various environments including human gut and lung, rumen and food. Of particular interest to her is the role of exercise and diet, specifically whey protein, on the human gut microbiome both in healthy and diseased cohorts. Orla also has a keen interest in Science communication and sits on the education and outreach committee of the APC.   Orla was recently awarded the early career researcher of the year award from the Science Foundation of Ireland, and today Mark talks to Orla about the benefits to high performance athletes of promoting diversity in microbiome for gut health.   A fascinating discussion including real world examples from her work with the Irish Rugby Union team. Strength and conditioning specialist at High Performance New Zealand, Nicolai Morris joins Mark for the first episode of 2020. Today we focus on the use of social media in the fitness industry, the stakeholders it affects (athletes, coaches, researchers), and how we can use it to create a strong progressive community of exercise science individuals all over the world. The second topic revolves around women in the industry and they're underrepresentation in positions that matter.   Nicolai is a champion of women holding the positions they deserve, as we are here at Train Smarter with Science. Mark and Nic both agree during the show that a coach should be chosen because they’re a good fit, not because they’re buddies with an existing member of an organisation. We’re heading in the right direction as an industry, and it was refreshing to hear some great names who were highlighted as both Nicolai’s and Mark’s professional inspirations. Great women who have helped develop and nurture both Nic and Mark as they progress in their careers.    If you’re heading to a conference and see Nicolai’s name on the schedule, make sure to reserve a seat and listen to what she has to say, it’ll be worth it!
