If you, like me, missed M3gan in theaters and were curious what all the fuss was about, M3gan is now available on Amazon Prime. I checked it out and was very impressed, M3gan in its own way is part of the recent wave of theatrically successful horror (Smile, Barbarian) that hopefully will trigger a renaissance of original films getting made. For years, I was adamant I did not like Interstellar and that it was Christopher Nolan's most flawed film. I revisited it as I'm very excited for Oppenheimer and wanted to give it another chance - maybe I was the problem. And my experience revisiting it a decade plus later was drastically different than my first viewing in theaters. Did you love Interstellar on a first watch or did it need time to grow on you? Watching this film post-COVID pandemic has made it 10 times more compelling. So much of the film feels even more real and credible given the echoes of our experiences during the pandemic. It flies by with great pacing, stellar action, and intriguing cross-cultural differences in how different countries handle a zombie apocalypse. Samuel L. Jackson gets a long-awaited showcase series, which uses Marvel characters to create a modern-day espionage/terrorism thriller. Calling to mind The Thing, the show uses the shapeshifting abilities of the Skrulls, along with their refugee status, to combine fantastical elements with potential modern-day social commentary. But does it deliver on all that promise? A late game twist is promising, but I had a pretty mixed reaction overall. Did you watch Secret Invasion on Disney Plus? Dune recently popped up on Hulu, and despite having already seen it 5 times, I immediately threw it on again. Since this first came out, every time I watch it, I like it even more. On this episode, a do a survey of the highest grossing 30 or so films of the last 3 years, and compare them against Dune in terms of substance and staying power. This movie, so incredibly photographed, production designed, directed, written, scored - it is such an intriguing rewatch and I'm just even more knocked out by it as time passes. A scrappy independent Canadian film starring Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton, directed by Matt Johnson (an under-the-radar genius, who will no longer be under-the-radar now) - Blackberry is legitimately competitive with The Social Network as a thrilling ride from nothing to world domination with three men of very different personalities and skill sets, who create something every single person on the planet is affected by. This is a fantastic film and one of the better films I've seen this year. Really funny, but just as dramatically compelling, it represents career-best work from its three stars (Matt stars in addition to directing and co-writing). It's available for rent on Amazon right now, and well worth the rental.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" In the spirit of Silo, I recorded this episode on a relic (my iPhone SE) like the residents of Silo, in a secret unmonitored room (my bathroom under a blanket) - these are the lengths I go to, to get the truth out. Silo had a lull that almost killed it for me, but in Episodes 6 and 7 it really has regained its creative mojo and is now back running at the same creative pace it was in the first couple of episodes. It's great to see Iain Glen getting to sink his teeth into some juicy character moments, the mystery is clearly coming into focus with major advances in the plot, and it just feels like a show truly hitting its stride for the home stretch of episodes. Idiocracy became a cult classic almost immediately, but for that to happen, the people making the film, like Mike Judge, had to contend with an almost comically low VFX budget, near-zero promotion from the studio, and a generally bruising production in which neither the filmmakers or the studio seemed to want to work together.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" An experimental 80 minute slow motion panic attack, HBO's new film Reality recreates a transcript of FBI agents interrogating and searching the home of Reality Winner (that's her real name) that would later be charged with violation of the Espionage Act. Syndey Sweeney really delivers a captivating performance in a film that is almost 100% reliant on her to function. What's really surprising is that the film is shot through with this bizarre, creeping Ari Aster style dread that elevates it beyond a simple docudrama. Still trying to wrap your head around how Barry ended? Me too. In this series finale episode, I look back at how Barry started, back in Season 1, Episode 1, and compare it to where it went by the end, which was surreal, bold, experimental, emotionally true, thematically true, but maybe in some difficult-to-define way less satisfying? I'm of two minds about it, but glad it was risk-taking enough to inspire a lot of debate. Regardless, it's one of the best TV series of the last 10 years, in my book.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" Jonathan was kind enough to join me to discuss, for-real hanging a semi truck above JT Walsh, for-real Kurt Russell hanging on the side of a moving truck, Jonathan Mostow's similarities to Kurt Russell's character, producer Dino De Laurentiis mortgaging his home to get the film made, and more in this fun look at a movie that only gets better with age, Breakdown.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" What is in the water over at Apple, that they keep making these affable, relatable, realistic, TV series about actual people doing relatively normal stuff? Apple has really defined a brand with these comfort food shows, and Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne's new series, Platonic, is another strong entry into that Apple+ TV universe. Reuniting and not losing a smidge of their chemistry from Neighbors, Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen feel like OUR platonic friends, and it is fun to spend time with them. While there is one pointed moment in the third episode, which I don't spoil in this review, that really threw me, apart from that it's really hard not to like this new TV series. Sometimes, you just get something wrong. In doing this deep dive, I turned up Kenneth Turan's Los Angeles Times 1994 review of The Shawshank Redemption, an incredible bashing of the film that is now indisputably one of the most revered films in human history, beloved around the world, and still #1 on the IMDB top movies list. I also discovered that this male-centric film likely would not have existed, not cast Morgan Freeman, and not had its iconic ending if it were not for female producer Liz Glotzer vital contributions. Don't worry, you'll be okay. If you were concerned the new Apple+ documentary Still, about Michael J. Fox, would leave you reduced to a puddle of tears on the floor, it's not that at all. Michael's optimism permeates the film, making for a documentary that is affirming and leaves you in a positive place, as well as a warts-and-all showbiz doc that ranks up there with The Kid Stays In The Picture and De Palma in presenting a behind-the-scenes look at some really well-known films and TV shows, in Michael's case including remarkable information about the making of Back To The Future and his later acting career that he juggled while hiding his diagnosis. Brian Tyree Henry and Kate Mara star in Hulu/FX's new series Class of 09. It's a big swing (three parallel narratives, past, present, and future, with the same members of an FBI class) with big themes (how we change with time, AI's role in crime-fighting, what kind of person it takes to be successful in law enforcement) that has come out with little fanfare and mixed reviews. Is it worth watching? I went in with an open mind, and found a lot to like about it, but also some questions. I'd love to know what you think.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" Pete Davidson stars in Bupkis on Peacock, but Joe Pesci is the X factor reason to watch. If you're familiar with Pete's standup comedy or Judd Apatow film The King of Staten Island, the storylines and themes of Bupkis will be a continuing exploration of similar material. But what Pete hasn't had before is Joe Pesci, who, at 80, is still intimidating, funny, charming, vulnerable - he's still a total movie star, in short. Much like Pete is spending time with Pesci as his grandfather in the show, we as the audience get a chance to spend time with Joe Pesci (whose last mainstream film role, besides the Irishman, basically was Lethal Weapon 4) in a rare late-career appearance. I always wondered, how did Amadeus, an expensive period film starring two relative unknowns, get made? The answer was there in research, starting with a hilariously contentious relationship between writer Peter Shaffer and director Milos Forman, continuing with the outsized, colorful character of uber-producer Saul Zaentz, and concluding with the rejection of bigger stars in favor of Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham. I've loved this movie forever, and I learned a lot of stuff I didn't know in researching this episode.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" ChatGPT could never write Apple+'s new TV series Silo. Take a high concept premise (the remnants of humanity living underground in a giant silo) and subvert audience expectations of how that premise would typically be executed, at every turn. Stack the cast with incredible actors (Rashida Jones, David Oyelowo, Tim Robbins, Rebecca Ferguson). Burn through plot at a crazy-fast rate. And that's Silo. It's really clever, it doesn't loiter narratively to pad the episode count, and it features some of the best working actors, doing their thing. A great sci-fi series on Apple+, a strong recommend.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" I suspect many people have not seen this show. But it's truly great. If it were an Amazon original, or on Netflix, or Paramount+ or really any other major streaming service, it would likely be a sensation. Instead, it's a show that's being spread through word of mouth, as multiple listeners implored me to watch it. I was instantly hooked in, and I'm definitely going to finish Season 1 and either buy MGM+ or buy a season pass on Amazon to watch Season 2. If you've been looking for something to scratch your Lost itch, this show features Harold Perrineau from Lost, director Jack Bender from Lost, a variety of writer-producers in some way connected to Lost, and a similar combination of elements like creepiness, mystery, mythology, faith, and monsters. Great, GREAT, monsters. Seriously, this is like the a great undiscovered novel by Stephen King. Watch it - and let me know what you think! Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" If you ever wanted to know about the real-life parallels between the Roy family on HBO's Succession and Rupert Murdoch's family, look no further. I went deep into the interwebs to find all the remarkable parallels between the characters of Kendall, Roman, Shiv and Logan and their equivalents in Rupert Murdoch and his adult children. I was always curious about this myself, and I was surprised to discover the amount of material on the television series that is clearly echoed in real-life.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" Another spin of the roulette wheel, this time on Hulu, with a star-studded war epic, Medieval, starring Ben Foster, Michael Caine, Til Schweiger, Matthew Goode, and more knife-play than a Benihana. This is a film where in the opening sequence alone there are a half-dozen wince-inducing moments of gruesome action. But is the story as effective as the fight choreography? What director Liam O'Donnell has done with the Skyline movie franchise (Skyline, Beyond Skyline, Skylines) to my knowledge is - seriously - unprecedented in film history. This is a franchise where the first film was financially successful but was not well received by critics or audiences and Liam and his team somehow managed to make 2 excellent sequels well received by critics and audiences and now Liam is making a fourth film. If you have any interest in filmmaking, movies with Iko Uwais, Frank Grillo movies, sci-fi movies, special effects, or behind the scenes, I strongly encourage you to listen to this episode.Liam also has his own podcast, Action For Everyone.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" If you're looking for funny things to watch on Amazon Prime, look no further than Jury Duty. It's technically on Freevee, Amazon's free-ad-supported channel, so even if you don't have Amazon Prime you can still watch it for free. This might be the best funny TV show on Amazon Prime I've seen, certainly in 2023. The premise is so unique and insane, it seems like it must be faked or manipulated in some way. A juror agrees to participate in a documentary about jury duty, but unbeknowst to him all his fellow jurors are actors. Requiring a Stanley Kubrick / Andy Kaufman / NASA moon landing level of coordination behind the scenes, this is basically like if your life was a sitcom and you didn't know it. Featuring James Marsden as himself (it makes sense when you watch) - this is a real gem and I'm excited to highlight it for you. I burned through the entire season in 3 days.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" A seemingly gimmicky high-concept premise is surprisingly substantive in The Big Door Prize, another winning, charming, extremely watchable show from Apple+. Mister Police, you could have saved her. I gave you all the clues. The Snowman is based on a hit novel, produced by Martin Scorsese, directed by esteemed director Tomas Alfredson, and stars Michael Fasbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, Toby Jones, Chloe Sevigney and JK Simmons. Is it possible a film with such an extraordinary assembly of talent could not be good? This is a Netflix roulette episode, where I pick a random film on Netflix and watch it. At the time of recording, this was the #1 movie on Netflix. Is it worth watching? I give my honest opinion. For better or worse, this episode is a first in the history of Watch This Tonight. Alliteration excitement for the return of Barry, one of my favorite television series ever at this point, now fully off the grid narratively, pushing past a conventional ending into uncharted territory. George Clooney contemplated suicide, writer-director Stephen Gaghan was kidnapped, and Harrison Ford almost played "Bob". Warner Brothers gave the film Syriana an unlimited research budget, and the resulting script netted one of the best casts of an adult drama in film history (George Clooney, Christopher Plummer, Jeffrey Wright, Chris Cooper, Matt Damon, Amanda Peet, Tom McCarthy, Max Minghella, Alexander Siddig, Tim Blake Nelson, William Hurt, and Mark Strong). Yet Syriana did not turn a profit in its theatrical release, and audiences were mixed on it. Why? This movie is incredible, and I did a deep dive into it for this episode. Everyone and their brother has demanded I watch Beef... and you were all right. Beef is incredibly engaging, really taps into some uncomfortable but I would argue universal truths about life, and is anchored by career performances from Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, and a murderer's row of stellar character actors in supporting roles. It is very hard to stop watching this show once you start. A perfect example of the best we can get from streaming, this is a peak TV positive outcome, a universally relatable show that is very binge-able. Big win for Netflix. Can we all admit that The Night Agent is the great guilty pleasure TV series of 2023? This is an end of season discussion of Season 1 of The Night Agent (Netflix), including all the weird, silly, strange elements of the show that I would argue are actually the secret sauce that kept me watching. I'm joined in this episode by longtime listener, first time co-host, James Jefferson (aka Brother of Doom). We walk through the Vice President ready to throw his daughter under any and all busses, how in this show no one recognizes a voice if it's on a phone, if Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) is a great ride-or-die girlfriend, surprise twins, Gabriel Basso's effective lead performance amidst the chaos, and the "America, f**k yeah" of it all by the end. Anna Kendrick stars in the ultimate your friend's boyfriend sucks movie - a psychological drama where almost everything is implied, suggested, inferred, until the end. Wisely paced at a slim 80 something minutes, this is a compelling character study, with great performances from Anna, Charlie Carrick, Wunmi Mosaku, and Kaniehtiio Horn. Very much in the tradition of tense character dramas like The Good Girl with Jennifer Aniston or Tully with Charlize Theron, performance pieces about people that feel totally real.Come back to Watch This Tonight as your podcast for the best film recommendations. Podcasting from the road, I decided to highlight three great road trip movies for you. Road trip movies are a great way to give direction to a plot, create opportunities for buddy stories, and function as a metaphor for life. In the case of one of my picks, they are also a great opportunity for Tom Hardy to prove he doesn't always need to work in a virtuoso-mumbling performance. As always, I tried to balance better-known films and obscure picks you might not have seen. What are your favorite road trip movies? Just renewed by Netflix for Season Two, The Night Agent sees Shawn Ryan (a legendary talent, immortally great after The Shield) effectively working overqualified on what (worst case scenario) could have been a forgettable network spy thriller series. But this variation on a familiar formula has a nifty concept. The Night Agent is basically 911 for spies. And it sets up a great "will they, won't they?" potential romance between a witness on the run and the Boy Scout agent who is clearly going to bend the rules once he discovers the conspiracy she's in danger from. As satisfying and comforting as a warm meal on a cold day, this is TV soul food, the staple ingredients of TV drama, served up in winning fashion. It's not going to dominate the Emmys, but you'll likely have fun watching it.Come back to Watch This Tonight as your podcast for the best TV recommendations. Sicario: Day Of The Soldado holds a 62% score on RottenTomatoes (vs. the first film at 92%). Roger Deakins and Josh Brolin agreed in a podcast interview that it was more action-based than character-driven. My perhaps controversial opinion is that Sicario: Day of the Soldado is to the first Sicario as The Godfather Part II is to The Godfather (bolder, darker, requires repeat viewings to access, but might be even better). I make the case in this episode. Come back to Watch This Tonight as your podcast for the best film recommendations. Thanks for inviting me to your haunted house, you f**king pricks, I'm gonna be up all night. Season 2 of Mayor of Kingstown has concluded. A show that seems to live below the radar, Mayor of Kingstown became even better in Season 2. While it's not as slick and polished as other similar shows, the messiness of the show actually echoes the messy, flawed nature of the characters, which is what makes it great to watch. The series also leaned more into dark humor this season, to great effect. Jeremy Renner is great in this, and Tobi Bamtefa and Taylor Handley and Hugh Dillon and Dianne Wiest and Aiden Gillen and Michael Beach and Kenny Johnson... they all get moments to shine. A remarkably clear-headed distillation of an incredibly complex true crime story, Boston Stranger does a great job of laying out the most likely case of what happened with the Boston Strangler (to say more would be to venture into spoilers). Keira Knightly, Carrie Coon, Alessandro Nivola, and Chris Cooper are just some of the great ensemble cast in this film. It is a bit more reserved in the early goings than some will like, and it might have benefited from a jolt of DePalma madness, but all in all this is an extremely solid delivery of one of the most amorphous, ambiguous, wild true crime stories in American history. Grab a water cup filled to the brim of vodka, your AK-47, and your kids, and let's go shooting by the lake! On this episode, I'm joined by Matt Gerasimovich of the Tipsy Tolstoy podcast, to discuss Russia's entry into the Academy Awards (it also won awards at Cannes) from 2014, Leviathan. In light of recent events the film is even more powerful. It starts a little slow but really builds to an incredibly powerful, stunning and compelling social drama. If you're worried it'll be dusty and boring as an international drama, do NOT be. Watch it. And even if you're not going to watch it, I encourage you to listen to this episode for a peek into Russian life. Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, who are basically their own French/American buddy cop film and trade jabs at each other as often as they collaborate on scripts, wrote Taken as part of a bread-and-butter of lower budget action films meant to prop up Besson's production company. Its success was just as surprising to Liam Neeson, who took the part primarily to take a vacation in France and have fun with the stunt guys, and thought his iconic speech was corny. Liam would later menace Maggie Grace's ex-boyfriend in-character with a version of the speech. There was also a guy who claimed to have inspired the part, who was later arrested by the FBI. TV's most depressing show we can't stop watching, The Last Of Us has been a massive hit for HBO. Season One concludes, fittingly, with the most upsetting episode yet! All this being said, the execution is so extraordinary that watching the series has been compelling throughout. This is an episode that demands discussion, framed around a horrifying dilemma. I'm not sure I went with it, but I am sure I love the conversation it has sparked. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann really delivered something people will have no choice but to react to. And this choice fundamentally changes how Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal's characters (and performances) go forward. I will likely be watching Season 2 and weeping along with everyone else.
