Hon. Jack Austin is the Lifetime Achievement Award winner in CCBC's 5 at 50 initiative. Jack's nomination describes him as “likely the longest serving person in both public and private life in building Canada's modern relationship to China,” active in one or more capacities from 1970 to the present time. He has done so in four different domains: diplomacy and government, legal practice, corporate leadership, and academic leadership. Key takeaways from Jack:The impetus for Canada's recognition of China back in 1970 was to involve China in the United Nations and help it become a supportive player in global trade, governance, etc. China was very poor in 1970 and unlikely to become an effective global trading country for several decades.Early commercial agreements focused on capability building, including oil drilling and recovery, creation of modern industry, and developing a tax system.Jack relates his experience with a whole series of Canadian and Chinese senior leaders over 50 years. He opines on what a future Government of Canada should do to forge a bilateral relationship that works for Canada, following resolution of the current diplomatic difficulties. This multi-part miniseries is sponsored by Manulife.

2020 will be a milestone in human history for the drastic changes that occurred almost overnight when the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. We here at the podcast were damn tired of the pandemic and definitely done talking about it. When human ingenuity and diligence produced a vaccine before the end of this ridiculous year, we had to talk about it. Our friends, Dr Jack Austin and Dr Tom Zickgraf, joined Hetal for a discussion about the vaccine that should not be missed. Stevie was laid out...from the virus. He was recovering in quarantine and so sat this one out. Don't worry, he is good now.

However, the digital information age we know today has changed the nature of warfare across all domains.Military commanders are acutely aware that new networks, systems and technologies are needed to ensure timely and effective communications. This is Shephard Studio’s podcast series on Five Eyes Connectivity, sponsored by our partner Viasat. In Series One, we looked at connectivity issues facing the Five Eyes grouping of countries - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US - through the prism of three key technology areas. For this second series, we are diving further into these issues, speaking to senior military leaders about the work underway to ensure military communication networks can withstand the expected threats of tomorrow. In this opening episode, we dive into the connectivity issues facing the US military and its further development of the Multi-Domain Operations concept (also now known as Joint All Domain Operations and Joint All-Domain Command and Control). This episode was produced by Tony Skinner with research support by Jack Austin, scriptwriting by Gerrard Cowan, and audio editing and mastering by Kevin Stokes.A big thanks to everyone who gave their time to support the project. This episode was based on open-source information and all participants were expressing their own opinions, not necessarily those of the organisations they represent.

Something very different this time around. This is a story of how a brotherhood was forged. Jack is one of my best mates and this episode we ramble on about our time in the Alpes were we tackled 4-course meals, no sleep and avoided death on the mountain. I hope this can share a little insight into the highs and lows that ultimately changed us a lot as young men. Not every ski season is a flat out party for 5 months, but there is certainly some magic.
It starred Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller and it never aired: we're talking about 1999's Heat Vision and Jack! In this episode, I coach Jack Austin, a purpose-driven business consultant. Jack already has a big impact with his clients, but he wants to be able to connect with new clients more easily. When we started the call, he told me that he sometimes feels uncomfortable in social or 'networking' contexts, and believes he needs to get better at that. As we dive into it, we discover that what's been getting in the way is an extremely common fear; something that countless coaches and transformation professionals share. This was a really touching and moving session for both Jack and me, so I look forward to hearing how it lands for you.
