When Dr. Hal Paz stepped into a newly created role at Ohio State University last June, he told Columbus Business First, “I want to be at the place that defines the next century of what healthcare looks like.” No one could have imagined this century. "What has happened in the past year is incredible, unbelievable, remarkable," Paz said, in the latest episode of Columbus Business First's Crisis Management podcast. "In part we got there because of this (coronavirus) pandemic, but a lot of it already was going through a process of change and, and the key ingredient in all this is innovation." For 13 months Paz has been the university's executive vice president and chancellor for health affairs, as well as CEO of its Wexner Medical Center. In that role, he has oversight of the $4 billion hospital system and faculty physician practice, plus the university health plan and all seven colleges in the health sciences – not just the medical school but nursing, pharmacy and other professions. The university's vision is to better integrate the training of those professionals, and the research by those disciplines, Paz said. "We have this new framework, this new vision for the future that I really am passionate about," he said. "This becomes the defining characteristic of what an academic health center is in the future. "How do you train a nurse and a doctor and a pharmacist and a public health worker and everyone involved in this process together at the same time – teaching them the same language, teaching them the same process of care from day one – as opposed to dropping them into a healthcare are setting and then retraining them or trying to understand why things are not lining up the way they should?" A physician and engineer, Paz came to Columbus after five years as chief medical officer for Aetna Inc. Before that he'd led a fellow Big Ten academic medical center and med school, Penn State. Just because someone is successful, doesn’t mean their leadership style was a values-approached style. [32:45] As the workforce becomes globalized, it’s more important than ever not to hire more people that are similar to you or practice groupthink. [35:40] Do you think you’re inclusive in your organization? Ask yourself: When was the last time you were in a group where you were a minority? [38:45] Ron’s challenge: A leader’s role is to develop the talent within an organization. Ron has had five people under him go on to become CEOs. Anne C. Beal, MD, MPH, is dedicated to improving health care in the United States, particularly for vulnerable patient groups. Her career is devoted to providing access to high quality health care and has included delivering health care services, teaching, research, public health, and philanthropy. Dr. Beal is Senior Vice President and Head of Global Patient Solutions for Sanofi, an integrated, global health care company focused on patient needs and engaged in the research, development, manufacturing, and marketing of health care products. In that role, she is supporting a culture of patient-centeredness that ensures patients, their needs and priorities, come first in all of the work of Sanofi. Prior to that, she was the Deputy Executive Director and Chief Engagement Officer for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) in the US, which was created by the Affordable Care Act to improve health care delivery and outcomes by helping people make informed health care decisions based on research that is guided by patients, caregivers, and the broader health care community. As PCORI's first Chief Officer for Engagement, Dr. Beal was charged with ensuring that the voices of patients and other stakeholders are reflected in their research portfolio. In her role as Deputy Executive Director, she helped to see that PCORI worked efficiently and effectively to carry out its mission as the nation's largest research institute focused on patient-centered outcomes research. Earlier in her career, Dr. Beal was President of the Aetna Foundation, the independent charitable and philanthropic arm of Aetna Inc. The Foundation promotes wellness, health, and access to high-quality health care for everyone, and its programs focused on addressing the rising rate of adult and childhood obesity in the US; promoting racial and ethnic equity in health and health care; and advancing integrated health care and care coordination. Dr. Beal's career in philanthropy started at the Commonwealth Fund where she was Assistant Vice President for the Program on Health Care Disparities and oversaw their programs on eliminating health disparities, collecting race/ethnicity data in health care, cultural competency, supporting the safety net, and training and development of minority health policy leaders. Early in her career, Dr. Beal, who is a board certified pediatrician, worked with a mobile medical unit project delivering health care services to children living in homeless shelters throughout New York City. She was also a health services researcher at Harvard Medical School in the Center for Child & Adolescent Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition, she was Associate Director of the Multicultural Affairs Office of Massachusetts General Hospital, an attending pediatrician in the division of General Pediatrics, and held faculty positions both in Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Beal's research interests include social influences on preventive health behaviors for minorities, racial disparities in health care, and quality of care for child health. While at Harvard, she was the principal investigator of research projects supported by the National Institute of Health (NIH), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Commonwealth Fund, and other private foundations. She has served on several regional and national advisory boards including the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Future Directions for the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Reports, the New York State Public Health Council, served as Chair for the New York State Minority health Council, was co-chair of the Healthcare Disparities Technical Advisory Panel for the National Quality Forum (NQF) Ambulatory Care Measures' Project, and was elected to the Board of Grantmakers in Health, as well as AcademyHealth, the professional society for health services researchers and health policy analysts. In addition to publishing in the peer-reviewed medical literature, Dr. Beal is also the author of The Black Parenting Book: Caring for Our Children in the First Five Years. Charles P. Garcia is the CEO of the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA), whose mission is to empower and develop Latino men and women as leaders of character for the nation in every sector of the global economy.  Founded in 1972, ALPFA is the nation’s largest Latino professional organization with 43 professional chapters and 144 student chapters.  He also chairs the TIGER 21 South Florida Chapter, the premier peer-to-peer group for ultrahigh-net-worth individuals, which is in 17 cities, and its 320 members control over $30 billion in personal assets. Mr. Garcia’s career spans a broad spectrum of industries, all focused on leveraging his in-depth understanding of Hispanic consumers.  In 1997, Mr. Garcia became the CEO of Sterling Financial Group, a privately held financial services firm which he grew from a small business to 60 offices in seven countries, 20,000 Hispanic clients and $2 billion in assets prior to selling it in 2005.  The company was named by Inc. magazine as the # 8 fastest growing privately held company in the country and Charles was named Entrepreneur of the Year by three national organizations. With an expertise in retail operations, marketing, finance, strategy, and international business, he served for six years (until the company was sold in 2012) on the Board of Directors of Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. (Fortune 500), one of the largest supermarkets in the southeast with nearly 500 stores and 400 in-store pharmacies.  He served on the Audit Committee, as a financial expert under SEC rules, and on the Nominating and Corporate Governance committee.  He also chaired an Advisory Board for Aetna Inc. (Fortune 100), reporting directly to its CEO, focused on growing the Hispanic market share of this diversified healthcare company.  Mr. Garcia was also a Hispanic market strategy advisor for Amway, a $13 billion private company in the direct selling industry. Mr. Garcia has worked for four Presidents, both Democrat and Republican, and served on high profile federal and state government boards.  He was the Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the U.S. Air Force Academy, appointed by both President Bush and President Obama, to oversee all operations at the Air Force Academy.  The fifteen member board is composed of four U.S. Senators, four U.S. Congressmen, and seven Presidential appointments.  The Secretary of the Air Force awarded him the Distinguished Public Service Medal for leading “a historic transformation to ensure it operates more like a corporate board of directors.”  Florida Governor Jeb Bush appointed him to the State Board of Education, which oversees all public education in Florida. Mr. Garcia has a J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was the first student in his class to publish on the Columbia Law Review.  He has an M.P.A. from the University of Oklahoma; and a B.S. from the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he was awarded the Class of 1983 Honor and Ethics Trophy given to the graduate who “most personified the ideals of personal integrity.”  In 1988, he was awarded a White House Fellowship by President Reagan.  He served in various high level positions in the federal government, receiving the Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez Public Service and Integrity award. The book Hispanics in the USA: Making History chose Mr. Garcia as one of fourteen Latino role models for the nation, and both Hispanic Business and Latino Leaders magazines recognized him as one of the “100 most influential Hispanics in the United States.”  He has authored two best-selling leadership books:  A Message from Garcia (John Wiley, 2003) and Leadership Lessons of the White House Fellows (McGraw Hill, 2009).   He writes regularly for CNN, Fox News and the Huffington Post.
