While the Bible remains the unshakable center of our faith, understanding the broader context of church history will enrich our spiritual life in Christ. And so, Stephanie invites you into her conversation with authors Ben Lansing and Dan Marotta. Their collaborative effort is “Our Church Speaks”, a book featuring 52 Christian saints connecting modern audiences with 2000 years of Christian tradition. In today's culture, dominated by a staggering number of celebrities, Ben and Dan propose a focus on Christ-centered heroes of the faith, past and present, as a healthier alternative. Recounting stories of saints can help reconstruct what it means to follow Christ, providing a curative narrative amid societal disillusionment. This perspective isn't anti-celebrity, but rather an appeal to prioritize emotional and spiritual well-being by valuing Christ-centered faith over celebrity culture. Ben and Dan underscore the value of saints as role models in stark contrast to today's idolized celebrity culture. Instead of pursuing a transient notion of the "good life" defined by cultural standards of beauty, success, and fame, the authors advocate emulating the virtues demonstrated by saints. These figures, pointing to Christ, offer a remedy for the anxiety and vanity pervasive in modern society. Ben and Dan draw parallels between the decline of the Roman Empire and current Western attitudes. The past's cultural uncertainties mirror today's sentiments. For example, the conversion of Augustine and the transformative power of faith, urge today's youth to find fulfillment in Christ rather than material success. Through the lens of history, Ben and Dan highlight the monastic movement's rise during turbulent times, structured around prayer and work. The lessons from these Christian communities remain pertinent today, providing a model for spiritual stability amidst chaos. The consistent theme of God's faithfulness through uncertain times emphasizes the reliability of prayer as a structural life foundation, rather than a mere emotional expression. Josephine Bakhita and Polycarp, for example, left indelible marks on Christian history. Josephine Bakhita's story of transcending slavery through faith—embracing her given name "Lucky" while finding true fortune in Christ—offers a lesson in finding freedom through spiritual dedication rather than the absence of constraints. Polycarp's unwavering faith despite persecution illustrates the early church's resilience and engagement with Scripture. His steadfastness serves as a source of encouragement for modern believers facing challenges to their faith, reinforcing confidence and trust in divine grace. Ben Lansing's role as an artist intertwines with his spiritual journey, as he finds inspiration in portraying saints from diverse eras and professions. His insights reveal how art and history can illuminate God's work across various cultures and time periods. Stephanie Rousselle reflects on how the book sparked her curiosity to learn about historical Christian figures, like the first Korean martyr, thus enhancing her appreciation for global Christian heritage. Dan Marotta shares his transformative encounter with church history through Ben, emphasizing themes of self-sacrifice present in the lives of saints. These true stories provide a humbling counterbalance to modern comfort-driven lifestyles, inspiring humility and faithful witness over martyrdom or suffering. The conversation touches on the negative implications of social media, this "giant mirror" reflecting and magnifying vanity issues. Emulating saints can redirect this focus, reducing self-promotion and increasing service to others, leading to genuine happiness and fulfillment. Ben and Dan conclude by inviting us to look beyond digital media, encouraging engagement with visual and historical narratives that convey beauty and truth. Their collaborative project aims to connect past and present, offering illustrations and biographies of Christian heroes of the faith to motivate deeper spiritual reflection. MORE ABOUT “OUR CHURCH SPEAKS” Do you ever feel like you're alone in your struggles to live out the Christian faith? Do you ever read the Bible yet still wonder what it looks like to follow Jesus in the complexity and difficulty of our time? The stories of great men and women throughout the history of the church can help us form a bridge between the teaching of Scripture and our embodied lives. This illustrated devotional vividly depicts the lives and words of great women and men of faith. Artist Ben Lansing and Anglican priest D. J. Marotta offer fifty-two profound images and reflections on Christians, from Polycarp in the first century to the martyrs of Sudan in the twenty-first century. These saints, from every continent and century of church history, demonstrate the historic church's relevance for Christians today and reveal God's faithfulness in all times and circumstances. The artwork, biographies, devotionals, and prayers in this book are meant to spark our imaginations, helping us to be faithful here and now, in our own age. And we have been doing this every day since 2019. We need YOU to keep Gospel Spice alive and growing. Financially speaking, we rely on people who understand this vision and who understand that we cannot function without a minimum budget. We run an extremely tight budget. For example, I work full time but don't draw a salary. And yet, we have expenses – for example, the equipment and technology we use, and also the wonderfully gifted staff who make it possible to deliver high quality content all around the globe, and then the necessary occasional promotional budget to make it possible to be discovered by those who seek to live a life spiced with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We need your help. So we would love for you to consider if this ministry is blessing you to pay gospel spice forward. You can partner with us monthly with 10, 25, 50, 100, a month, or you can make one donation, once. Completely tax deductible. So you're even saving money as you invest in gospel spice ministries. It is an eternal investment, and we are very grateful to you for it. Now it's very important to us that we give back as much as possible from what you give us. And so we commit to giving the majority of what we receive, once all of our administrative costs are paid, to organizations that fight human trafficking on the front line. There are many worthwhile causes in the world, so why this one? Because I have always personally felt deep compassion for victims of human trafficking – maybe because I have never been its victim myself, so I feel a responsibility to help those less fortunate than me. Also, because Jesus tells us to love our neighbor. Human trafficking is modern day slavery, and that is something that revolts the heart of God. We want to play our part in raising awareness and then financially supporting those who fight this great evil. So, we do some due diligence. We pick organizations who have proven themselves trustworthy of our support. And then we give money to these Christians organizations that fight human trafficking. So would you consider paying us forward at gospelspice.com/payitforward? Your hard-earned money is always well used at Gospel Spice. Ultimately, you are giving back to the Kingdom, a portion of what Jesus has given you. We are well aware of the privilege to steward your partnership. And my prayer is always that you will find your own life spiced with the gospel as you partner with us to flavor the lives of those around us, near and far, with the spice of the gospel. Stephan Meier is Professor of Business Strategy at Columbia Business School and author of The Employee Advantage: How Putting Workers First Helps Business Thrive. Stephan describes how behavioral economics examine social dynamics and decision-making. He describes the importance of intrinsic motivation and fairness at work and the effect on behavior of monetary and non-monetary incentives. Stephan explains how fast-evolving business conditions require trusting leadership and empowered employees. He shares insights about flexibility and relatedness as key motivators which affect hybrid/remote working models. TAKEAWAYS [02:27] Stephan was fascinated by history but studied economics to understand the world better. [03:19] Traditional economic models, though predictive, lack alignment with human behavior. [04:09] Stephan explores behavioral economics to study non-rational behaviors and model deviations. [06:03] For his PhD, Stephan researches intrinsic motivations and non-selfish human interactions. [08:08] Early management models assumed people are lazy therefore control and incentives were essential. [09:01] Lack of training to support employee-centric versus control, incentive mechanisms. [11:06] Stephan's thesis emphasizes intrinsic motivations and the joy achieved by helping others. [12:01] Fairness and social norms are important to foster collaboration and group motivation. [13:00] How monetary incentives can undermine social relationships. [14:21] The dynamics of social and intrinsic motivation compared with financial motivation. [17:13] Stephan's Federal Reserve work focused on behavioral economics and improving financial decision-making. [19:31] How people revert to status quo choices when tired and lacking nourishment. [22:00] Money affects work-related decisions for people who are distracted by financial stressors. [23:33] How behavioral science and economic rational competition determine our behaviors which need to be balanced. [24:50] We overestimate our own decision-making abilities, not conscious of influential factors. [25:35] How managers, as humans, are affected by layoffs and unemployment benefits. [28:32] Thinking about employees like customers and improving their experiences. [29:11] Competition and transparency are two key reasons for the new employee emphasis. [30:27] A third reason is having more data and tools to personalize work experiences. [32:35] Employee centricity: fixing pain points and finding moments that matter along the Employee Journey. [33:21] The need for constant feedback and innovation to improve employees' experiences. [35:07] What really motivates people and using technology to enhance not destroy this. [35:52] At the current pace of change, the importance of trusting relationships and autonomy. [36:35] Especially in AI-integrated, flatter companies, we need to empower employees. [37:20] Upskilling employees by matching them with opportunities just as Netflix matches viewers with their preferences. [40:00] Flexibility and relatedness are important motivators to consider when optimizing hybrid and remote work models [40:16] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: To achieve a more employee centric approach, tap into two motivators: flexibility, giving people autonomy about how, when, where to work; and relatedness having social interactions which include in person. [41:45] Leaders need to embrace behavioral insights to adapt for new working environments. [43:16] Being intentional about workplace culture and coordinating office-based working. [45:30] Treating employees well is a win-win. [46:30] We must understand what motivates employees and use technology to enhance these motivators. RESOURCES Stephan Meier on LinkedIn Stephan's website Stephan's book “The Employee Advantage: How Putting Workers First Helps Business Thrive” QUOTES “If we think people are lazy and we want to control, technology gives us the amazing tools to control to the level that we never could before. But that will be exactly destroying everything about the trusting relationship.” "If you integrate more AI, normally the hierarchies become flatter. Now you actually need teams who work more autonomously. You empower them and it's a very different way of managing because you now have to trust them as well.” “The same trends that led to customer centricity lead to employees centricity. We actually have a lot of tools about customers that we can now apply to employees. We can figure out what are the pain points, what are the moments that matter or whatever you want to call those for our employees to actually delight them.” “We do have to empower employees more. Top down works really well when it's relatively stable and not changing in working when it's moving fast, you have to change.” “Most leaders are not trained in understanding what motivates people beyond monetary control mechanisms.”

In this exciting episode of the Mob Mentality Show, we are joined by Kyle Griffin Aretae to dive deep into the nuances of Test-Driven Development (TDD) and the crucial concept of "Goal-Centricity" in Agile practices. Kyle breaks down why TDD is so much more than just "test first" and challenges common misconceptions about this widely used development practice. If you're a software developer, Agile enthusiast, or just someone looking to refine your team's development processes, this episode is packed with insights you won't want to miss. We explore why treating TDD as merely writing tests first misses the larger picture and how adopting a broader, more progressive approach can help your team build better, more maintainable software. Kyle shares his thoughts on the primary value proposition of TDD, focusing on **fast feedback loops** and the **refactor step** at least every 5 minutes. He explains how smaller, healthier TDD cycles allow developers to stay nimble and avoid the trap of feedback loops that last 30 minutes or more. Thus, when fast feedback loops with constant refactoring are in place as the foundation, then the "test first" aspect of TDD really shines. Kyle also sheds light on common pitfalls, such as the misunderstanding of what it means to "do TDD" when developers claim they have 8 unit tests on 50,000 lines of code. We discusses the difference between **Cargo Cult XP (Extreme Programming)** and the real deal, as well as the critical role of **decoupling code** so tests can run in 5 seconds or less. A key takeaway from this episode is the impact of **social programming**, TDD, and **CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery) pipelines**. We explain the importance of the "Pipeline First" principle when writing new code. We then dive into Kyle's most controversial take on TDD: the idea that creating a **mini-plan** (a rough roadmap of what to do next) before writing tests might actually be more beneficial than strictly adhering to "test first." This, Kyle argues, leads to more robust code when integrated into strong social programming practices. We also touch on the application of **Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs** to TDD and the importance of satisfying basic development needs (like fast feedback and clean code) before tackling more complex issues. The episode continues with a discussion on the intersection of **Goal-Centricity** and Agile. Kyle questions whether Agile methods are effective without first agreeing on a clear goal. We explore scenarios where goals are unclear or where methods are imposed without understanding the desired outcomes. Kyle shares a fascinating example of a code freeze during "Black Friday" and the unintended consequences of such decisions. We also reference a powerful quote by **Deming**, "A goal without method is cruel," explaining how the opposite can be just as problematic. Throughout the conversation, we dive into the importance of aligning goals between management and development teams, avoiding the common trap of blindly delivering fixed requirements for bonuses, and how real Agile success comes from alignment on solving customer problems, not just ticking off tasks. Kyle emphasizes the need to start with a clear understanding of what you're trying to achieve before applying any method, whether it's Scrum or TDD. Don't miss out on this thought-provoking episode filled with actionable insights on TDD, Agile, and effective software development. Here because she believes in the wild, divine power of nature as both teacher and healer. For the last 14 years, she has been a devoted student of the bee, bee animism, womb wisdom, and history and folklore around bees and bee priestesses of Ancient Greece. Ariella's approach to beekeeping falls under the labels of natural and bee-centric beekeeping. When the Melissae nymphs recused infant Zeus from his all-consuming father, they hid him away in a cave and raised him on sweet ambrosia: honey and milk. When bees came to earth they arrived in a long comet of starts. Seven of them remain to this day in the heavens. The seven Bees. The seven sisters. The Pleiades. When the tiny cluster of stars rise in the spring, honey bees cover the earth and bounty returns to the land. They say the first brewer was a woman and she brewed mead from her bees who told her the secrets of their intoxicating elixir. The great Greek prophetess was of the bee. Most revered oracles of the west, their era spanning centuries. The priestesses of Delphi were called Melissae, meaning bee, and the Pythia offering prophecy, was called the Delphic Bee. Investors in India are channeling funds into wealthtech startups as the middle class seeks diverse investment opportunities, with startups vying against traditional financial advisors for high-net-worth clients. Premji Invest is in advanced talks to lead a funding round in Dezerv, valuing the company at about $170 million pre-money. Lightspeed Venture is set to lead a round in Centricity, while Peak XV has agreed to invest in Neo. Analysts estimate that only 50-55% of India's wealth management market is currently under professional management. Accel-backed Scripbox is now profitable and manages over $2 billion in assets. Mutual fund accounts in India have grown 3.5 times since 2015, yet the mutual fund AUM-to-GDP ratio is 15%, lower than the global average of 75%. The affluent population in India is expected to more than double over the next five years. Several startups, including Jar and Smallcase, are making significant strides in mutual fund, stock, and gold investments. Major firms like Reliance and BlackRock are also entering the market with new ventures aimed at providing affordable, tech-enabled investment solutions.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. This episode features an interview with Hamza Khan, Future of Work and Leadership Expert. He is the best-selling author of Leadership Reinvented and The Burnout Gamble and is a two-time TEDx Speaker. Hamza challenges organizations to rehumanize their workplaces to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth. His clients include Microsoft, Deloitte, and TikTok.In this episode, Shawn sits down with Hamza to discuss why work is not working, how to make employees owners, and the no day work week.-------------------“If you invest in employee engagement and well-being, then it turns all the other priorities into guaranteed outcomes. That's where the work needs to be done. We actually need to do this work, at the individual level with every single leader in the world. We have to just overhaul our education system to produce more human-centric, values-driven, change-friendly, self-disrupting leaders. But, we also have to make connecting with other human beings an organizational imperative. That should be the only priority that leaders pursue at every level. The welfare, the well-being, the engagement, and actually, just summarize all that into the thriving of their employees.” – Hamza Khan-------------------Episode Timestamps:*(05:09): Rapid fire questions*(11:48): Hamza discusses his 2016 TEDx Talk and if it holds up today *(21:43): The history and influence of The Haymarket Affair on work today*(26:57): Giving employees more say over their work*(38:48): Will AI increase the amount of work for employees *(45:14): What Hamza is hopeful about-------------------Links:Connect with Hamza on LinkedInVisit Hamza's websiteRead Hamza's booksConnect with Shawn on LinkedInCohesion Podcast

Steve Thomas is the General Manager at Belmont Park in San Diego, CA. Steve's background includes working in oil fields in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico until he decided to move back to his hometown of San Diego in 2017. At that time, Belmont Park had recently been acquired by a real estate developer who had a new vision for the park, which was falling into disrepair. After identifying the challenges needed to make necessary improvements, he took on the role of Maintenance Manager and immediately implemented enhancements. Not long after, he approached the park's ownership with the interest of becoming General Manager. Since becoming GM in 2018, Steve's main focus has been on unification, which included acquiring all of the concessions operators on the property and bringing them all under one roof. In this interview, Steve talks about lessons from the oil field, guest centricity, and no paper signs. Lessons from the oil field "Don't be bitter about spending a little more time in a role. Have patience." Steve became a Floorhand for a drilling company after finding them at a recruiting event and learned the job from the lowest position in the ranks. After being passed up for a promotion to Driller a year later, Steve was initially disappointed, but he took the next seven to eight months to fully prepare himself for the role. When he got it, his proficiency was even higher than those who had been drilling for years. Steve stresses that patience pays off when it comes to growing in your career. As a Driller, Steve says he gained valuable leadership lessons that translated into his role today at Belmont Park. When he was promoted to Driller, he found that he was doing the majority of the work because he could get it done better and quicker than anyone else, until he realized that this was the wrong approach. Instead, when he began learning more about what his team member's best skill sets were, coaching, and operating as a team, their productivity went up substantially. Guest centricity "Everything that we do is with the guest in mind." Because of the number of businesses that operated at Belmont Park, Steve said that walking into the park felt more like walking into a strip mall than an amusement park. When your ticket allows you certain attractions but not others, employees are wearing different uniforms, and information is difficult to find, it creates a confusing experience that Steve described as fragmented and broken. By working to acquire all of the concessionaires, not only was it a good business decision, it made for a much smoother guest experience. When describing his guest experience philosophy, Steve says that his focus is to ask, “What is that extra thing?” at every touchpoint in the park. From purchasing tickets to dining in the restaurants, Steve describes the concept of guest centricity of exceeding expectations and that everything that the park does is with the guest in mind. No paper signs "There's a lack of care for the guest when there's a crooked paper sign taped to a window." When comparing Belmont Park to Disneyland, Steve stresses that they can't compete on the size of the park or the number of rides, but they can compete on guest experience. And part of the guest experience strategy is that there are no paper signs in the parks due to the lack of care that it shows to the guest. The standard of no paper signs is literal, but also represents the overarching standard. To be considered world-class, you can't have paper signs taped to a window. This same standard extends into never walking past a piece of trash without picking it up, which helps to align Belmont Park's definition of world-class. Having opened in 1925, Belmont Park will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025. While the plans are still coming together at the time of this interview, Steve is excited to be a part of the centennial celebration and is excited to rally the team and acknowledge this historic milestone. In this episode of the Centricity podcast, our host, Will Riley, meets with Eddie Yoon, one of the authors of The 22 Laws of Category Design: Name & Claim Your Niche, Share Your POV, And Move The World From Where It Is To Somewhere Different. They talk about the ultimate business strategy - category design - which uses a passion for change and the need to upend the status quo to drive innovation and growth. Category Design - The Ultimate Strategy Instead of competing against other businesses or trying to come out at the top of your field, category design is about competing against the status quo. Companies that subscribe to a “Be Different” mentality grow quickly, but many are too risk-averse to go in this direction. Leaders in these businesses care deeply about their products and believe in what the company produces - they're frustrated by current societal standards and want to create change. Types of Category Designers Accidental designers are those who create something great that explodes but don't know why and can't replicate their success. Serial designers are innovators who consistently create successful products that they support and care about. In this episode of the Centricity podcast, our host Will Riley meets with Jeremy Miner, author of The New Model of Selling: Selling to an Unsellable Generation. They discuss meeting new challenges as a seller It's Time For Sellers to Adapt More than ever before, consumers have access to plenty of information about all of the products people are trying to sell to them. They no longer need a salesperson to be their consultant. It's good to learn about foundational elements of sales from older books, but they focus on “transactional selling,” which is less and less relevant. Prospects are used to being sold to. When they hear “salesy” talk, they shut down - sellers need to build actual trust with prospects through tonality and asking the right questions. Moving Beyond Logic When a seller seems aggressive or desperate, prospects shut down. Using different tones and facial expressions, you can open them up. Prospects are predisposed to say “no” when you start selling to them. Ask them questions like, “Are you opposed to discussing this further?” Make the ‘no' work for you! Stay away from surface-level questions if you are interested in deeper answers. In this episode of the Centricity podcast, our host Will Riley meets with Connor Jeffers, the founder and CEO of Aptitude 8 and hapily. They dig deep into digital systems and get specific about finding a tech stack that finds a balance between sophistication and efficiency. Choosing a Solution Consultative sellers have to understand the pain and needs of the companies they're working with, because buyers may not exactly know the terminology for what they actually want. A8 helps customers create what they want to build, and then they build it. On the other hand, hapily offers standard functionality and if you have needs beyond that, you will need to seek them elsewhere. Independent Software Vendor vs Systems Integrator Aptitude 8, for all intents and purposes, an integrator. While they can create a setup entirely through HubSpot, but they do end up integrating, especially for larger companies. Security-wise, they have access to a lot of data. They have systems in place to ensure that data is safe. When working with big organizations, there is a responsibility to ensure that the new systems work better than the original. There is a lot of risk involved for the organization. Imagine how intimidating high-mountain roads could be, if there were no guardrails to protect cars from going off the edge? Processes deliver safety to businesses, in the same way that guardrails protect cars on dangerous roads. Designing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) enables our businesses to pave a multi-lane, super-highway for operational consistency, efficiency, and profitability, However, how often is the customer the main beneficiary of our process expressways? That is our question for today's show. Episode 207 looks at the different angles we must consider when designing, and implementing process-centricity.Support the show
In this episode of the Centricity podcast, our host Sean Doyle meets with Cecilia Lang Ree, the Senior Product Manager at Biolinq. They discuss applying behavior science to create more effective, successful marketing strategies. Why Apply Behavior Science to Marketing? This gives marketing professionals a science-based framework to start from when creating profiles of their prospects rather than relying on trial and error. People are often motivated by unconscious factors – even if you're surveying them and getting responses, they may not be able to tell you a complete picture of what they're experiencing and why. The transtheoretical model maps out how people experience changes in behavior. Marketers need to be familiar with the stages of behavior change in order to have targeted techniques throughout the buyer journey. The Bridge Between Awareness and Action Awareness is not enough to change people's behavior. Understanding intrinsic motivation can help us develop a step-by-step process that can take someone from knowing about your product to choosing to purchase. Getting Started Get excited about the science. Learn it and teach it to anyone who is interested. Cecilia lists some of her favorite resources - see below! In this episode of the Centricity podcast, our host Sean Doyle sits down with Ian Altman, author of Same Side Selling, to talk through the three most damaging sales tactics. Tune in to hear the importance of understanding and solving the buyer's problems, focusing on results, and building buyer trust through tactful language. Focusing on Features and Benefits Lead with exploring the “symptoms” the buyer may be dealing with rather than trying to solve a problem they don't know they have. Focus on meeting your client's goals and how your product will deliver those results. BANT (Budget, Authority, Need, Time Sensitivity) Focusing on these types of questions creates a “salesy” atmosphere and puts the client in an adversarial position, which causes sellers to lose buyer trust. It's okay to discuss needs and time sensitivity, but if you start with budget and authority, you've already put your buyer on the defensive. If you want to talk about budget, instead, try bringing up the costs of NOT addressing the issues your product will solve. Forgetting the Buyer Know what problem you solve and present that to your contact at whatever level they're at in the industry. Align with marketing to understand your buyer and their needs better. If marketing tools aren't useful, let the marketing team know so they can help you! In today's episode of the Centricity podcast, our host Sean Doyle meets with NYT-bestselling author Jonah Berger to discuss his book Magic Words. They discuss the science behind the impact of words and how we can increase our impact simply by consciously adjusting how we communicate. Language of “Identity” People are more likely to be motivated to do something if they think it reflects who they are or want to become. Berger offers several examples, including one that asked children to “help clean up,” vs. asking them to “be a helper,” and the latter was more effective persuasively. This works for adults, too! “Concrete” Language When most people make a bold claim, they will “hedge”, or add in language of uncertainty. Berger recommends doing away with hedging and focusing on definite, clear terms if you want to exude confidence.
