Parenting and Raising RESILIENT children is an entirely different conversation. Yet, it's a NECESSARY conversation. In the middle of a pandemic, with all of the challenges that we're facing as a world, we cannot forget to lean into the issues that our children are facing and navigating. Our Host, Christopher J Harris, welcomes Dr Holly Catterton Allen, author of the book Forming Resilient Children and she herself a Mother and Grandmother, for an incredibly hopeful, engaging, and inspiring discussion around raising and rearing children in a way that empowers them to thrive. More importantly, this discussion raises the conversation to deal with healthy childhood development through spiritual formation. David Csinos, founder of Faith Forward and Associate Professor at Atlantic School of Theology said, “Forming Resilient Children is a much-needed addition to the field of children's spirituality. Especially now, as we continue to face the ongoing effects of a once-a-century pandemic, children need adults who can help them recover from trauma, process grief, and nurture hope. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, pastor, teacher, or children's ministry volunteer, Holly Allen's superb research will help you understand connections between spirituality and resilience. What is more, she offers strategies and resources that you can use to foster resilience among the children that God has placed in your life.” You can connect with Dr Allen here: Website | Conference Website | Amazon Page | Facebook | If you need further assistance or have questions, feel free to email us at info@thewiseideapodcast.com ================== For Coaching, Questions, or Additional Information: You can contact us at info@thewiseideapodcast.com  - Subscribe via: iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, TuneIn, RSS Feed, and Spotify Enjoy what you're hearing & seeing? To provide wisdom, and raise an often silent discussion, and discuss her latest book, Soul Care In The African American Practice, our host Christopher J Harris welcomed Dr Barbara L Peacock, a Professor, Conference Speaker, Podcaster, and Author, with an earned Doctorate. According to National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (just a sample of statistics on Domestic Violence): On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, use of victim services, contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, etc. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors (e.g. slapping, shoving, pushing) and in some cases might not be considered "domestic violence." 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence (e.g. beating, burning, strangling) by an intimate partner in their lifetime. On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. Only 34% of people who are injured by intimate partners receive medical care for their injuries. Source (and MORE statistics) Beyond these statistics, Dana shares her personal story. Episode 176 - Marriage In The Middle With Dorothy Greco Episode sponsored by DiverseChurchJobs.com Are midlife marriages destined to descend into endless crises, distance, and unhappiness? Contrary to the current cultural narrative, no! Marriage in the Middle normalizes the challenges and surprises of this time frame and then comes alongside couples to help them thrive. Through story, Scripture, and hard-won wisdom, Dorothy Greco offers readers and listeners hope that midlife can be a season of recalibrating, shoring up vulnerabilities, and imagining new ways to create a mutually fulfilling marriage. Dorothy joins our host, Christopher J Harris, for an incredibly warming and insightful discussion on marriage in general and then marriages who are seasoned specifically.  This conversation will leave you with that sense that you just saw down with your best friend, a counselor/therapists, and a Pastor all at the same time...well...because you did. You'll smile...you'll laugh...but you may get a little misty-eyed...and you'll want to take notes as well. Since graduating from Boston University in 1983, Dorothy has been working as a photographer, author, writer, and speaker. Elizabeth Prince of University Park, MD lives with her husband, Rodney and their two sons, Jalen and Jordan. Elizabeth has lost a total of 80 pounds and over 60 inches of weight. Her struggle with being overweight began when she was a baby and her aunt said “this baby doesn't need baby food, she needs grits”.  That is when the learned behavior of unhealthy eating began.  Elizabeth joined a Community Life group at Crossover Church in Hyattsville, MD called “Weigh Free” to learn how to eat healthy and lose weight. Later, she was asked to lead the Community Life group from August 2009-August 2011 where she lost her initial 30 pounds. She began her ministry “Spirit-Filled Fitness” birthed the summer of 2011. She has assisted women spiritually, mentally and physically to become fit.  April 2016, Elizabeth was on the quest to lose more weight.  She lost an additional 50 pounds with “Fit, Fyne & Fabulous” virtual ministry group where she is currently a coach assisting women with meal planning, meal prepping, hydrating and exercise. August 2016, Elizabeth became a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer to help others with the same struggle which plagued her for years.  She is currently continuing her education by taking two online courses, Group Exercise Instructor with Athletics and Fitness Association of America and Plant—Based Cooking: Level 1 with Rouxbe Cooking School.  In her spare time, she loves to grocery shop to get the best deals. This is very therapeutic for her. Elizabeth will be starting her “Move with Liz” program this spring 2017 in the DC Metropolitan Area. She can be reached at spiritfilledfit@gmail.com or stay connected with her on Facebook @sfilledfitness for more details and upcoming events.

The Calling
Tommy "Urban D" Kyllonen: Why Our Hip-hop Loving Church Doesn't Worship to Kanye

The Calling

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2016 52:51

The fact that rapper, writer, publisher, and pastor Tommy “Urban D.” Kyllonen feels called to minister to the inner city is no great surprise—“urban” is literally his middle name, after all. What is surprising, however, is the number of ways in which he's managed to do it. Whether serving as lead pastor for Tampa's multi-ethnic, multi-generational Crossover Church, performing hip-hop and spoken word concerts around the world, or writing books like Un.orthodox or ReBuild, Kyllonen has spent the last 20 years in ministry venture after ministry venture, bringing the gospel into every available nook and cranny of the city he calls home. But for someone who's so keen on serving in neighborhoods where many churches won't go, there are still some lines Urban D. won't cross. For instance, while he's been at the forefront of cultivating a hip-hop-friendly culture at Crossover, he's also learned the hard way that when a church copies the world's culture rather than creating one of its own, it can lead to confusion over what that church is really all about. If that tension sounds familiar, you're not alone. Join us this week on The Calling, as CT managing editor Richard Clark chats with Urban D. about his brief stint as a Bible college rebel, how he used basketball to build a youth group, and what two decades of urban ministry have taught him about the church's crucial role in America's metropolitan future.
