One of the most essential parts of our entrepreneurial journey is the ability to continually learn. We should never stop learning. If we stop learning, we stop growing. Sir Richard Branson, a business magnate, investor, and author, said, “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” If we can learn from great books and courses, our mistakes and successes, our mentors, our critics, and our customers, we will have the ability to continually find success. The worst thing we can do as entrepreneurs is to think we know everything and stop learning. Jeff Burningham is a serial entrepreneur who has founded some very successful businesses in his career and has been on over 10 start-up boards. He is also the founder and chairman of Peak Capital Partners, a $2 billion real estate investment firm, which was named the second fastest-growing company in Utah and one of the 500 fastest privately held companies in the United States by Inc. Magazine. In today's episode, we're going to discuss Jeff's career and how his passion for learning helped him get to where he is today. A Passion for Learning Brian Herbert, an American author, said, “The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” We should always be growing and progressing, and the only way we can do this is by learning. From a young age, Jeff developed a passion for learning and created a growth mindset. Each life experience he went through, he found a lesson to learn. However, this is often easier said than done. Learning is a choice. We should actively search for new opportunities for growth if we want to constantly progress. There are so many different ways and things to learn we could easily miss if we aren't paying attention. We can learn skills, history, spiritual lessons, or life habits. We can learn by reading books, listening to stories, or watching the examples of mentors. We can even learn from the massive glaciers in Alaska. Jeff went heli-skiing in Alaska and learned a new skill. While he stood on the massive mountain, watching the northern lights flicker over the horizon, he learned perspective. We can learn from everything around us if we are looking. Some of the best and hardest ways to learn are through trial and error. Making mistakes is hard and unfortunately, guaranteed. What determines our success is not the intensity of the mistake, but the way we react to it. If we can look at our challenges and failures as opportunities to learn, we will have much more success in our businesses and in our lives. Here are a few examples of experiences Jeff took as an opportunity for new insights, knowledge, and growth. Relationships Over the course of his career, Jeff learned that relationships matter most. “It's about relationships,” Jeff said. “We often focus on results or things we want to get done and sometimes those are important, but really, at the end of the day, the result we really want are the relationships, and whether that's an MBA program, or a business, or a family, or a community, those relationships are what matter most.” When Jeff was about 12 or 13 years old, he started a carpet-cleaning business. His parents bought him a carpet cleaner so he could start cleaning the carpets at school, the dentist's office, and churches. He eventually handed on his business to his little brother, but he said this first step on his entrepreneurial journey taught him some of the greatest lessons. “We don't get there alone; we almost always need help, whether it's through investors or mentors or partners or employees,” Jeff said. “Without my mom and dad . . . I wouldn't have been able to make it.” While we may have the skills necessary to start a business by ourselves, we will have a much greater capacity for success when we get the help of others. Jeff learned this lesson from his parents and re-learned it again with his mentors, partners, and investors. When we focus on relationships, whether it be with our customers or partners, success and profit will come naturally. Exit Transactions Jeff learned a lot from his first scalable business. He started Mind Wire, a technology company, as an undergrad at BYU, and he won the BYU Business Plan Competition in 2001. He later sold his business to a publicly-traded company, learning a few lessons in the process. Jeff and his partner had scaled their business up to about 20 employees and created a great team of people. When he sold the company and made that transaction, he learned that watching his small company get absorbed by a bigger company was harder than he thought. He also stayed with the publicly-traded company for about two years until he left to open his own office. “I learned a lot about transactions [in] that early sale,” Jeff said. “I also learned that it was hard for me to work for someone else. It wasn't motivating to me to follow someone else's vision. I always like to set the vision, set the plan, set the course within my team.” By selling his company, Jeff learned new ways to negotiate with others, and also learned something about himself. He learned that he doesn't work great under someone else. He learned he works better when he can implement his own ideas and visions with a team. Partnerships After Jeff left the publicly traded company, he teamed up with two of his friends to create Peak Capital Partners. There were times when they weren't sure if they would make it as they had about two to three years of no revenue. However, as they continued to work hard and pursue their vision, they turned it around. Since then, they have been one of the fastest-growing businesses in Utah for the last 5-10 years and have scaled their business to about 800 employees. During his time with Peak Capital Partners, Jeff continually looked for new opportunities to learn. He first learned to never give up. It took Jeff two to three years to earn a profit, but because he put in the hard work and effort, he was able to turn our business around and become extremely successful. We also need to be very intentional about who we choose to partner with. “I've learned the value of good partners,” Jeff said. “Don't ever get a partner that doesn't have your same baseline ethics or morals, and I'm not talking about religion. I'm talking about honesty, integrity, work ethic, etc. Find partners that see the same way you do in that regard. Also, get partners . . . that complement your weaknesses. Be self-aware. Know where you're strong, know where you're weaker, and get partners that can complement your weaknesses.” As we constantly seek new ways to learn and implement what we learn, we will find that our chances of success will increase. Because Jeff was able to learn from his experience and the experience of others, he found strategies that work in a business and others that don't, and that helped him in his future ventures. “I really love the early stages [of a business],” Jeff said. “There's a lot of risks. It's really hard, but I find it to be . . . such a rich time of learning. And so I love those first five years. I love the startup.” Key Takeaways Thank you so much Jeff for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: We should never stop learning. If we stop learning, we stop growing. Learning is a choice. We should actively search for new opportunities for growth if we want to constantly progress. Our businesses should be about relationships. While we may have the skills necessary to start a business by ourselves, we will have a much greater capacity for success when we get the help of others. It might take two to three years to earn a profit, but if we put in the work and effort, we can turn our business around and become extremely successful. We should be intentional about who we choose to partner with. Our partners should have similar values as us and should complement our strengths and weaknesses. This man spent 16 years in prison for rape and murder... but he did NOT commit the crime! Listen to the absolutely RIVETING story of Jeff Deskovic: a wrongfully convicted teenager turned Attorney and Activist. After Jeff's 15-year-old classmate was found dead, police investigators took note of the awkward boy and instantly made him a suspect. Jeff was interrogated for 6 weeks and coersed into a false confession, which ended up being the centerpiece of a trial where DNA evidence was ignored, alibi witnesses were not called, and a judge said "you might be innocent" as he sent Jeff away to prison. Your mouth will be on the FLOOR (like Robin's!!!) hearing how this wild conviction unfolded. You will be on the edge of your seat waiting for Part 2! In this episode of Adventures in Angular the panel has fun interviewing David East about Firebase. David starts by sharing what it was like at the recent Firebase Summit in Madrid. There were so many announcements they had a tough time fitting them all into the one-hour keynote address. One of the cool new features announced at the Firebase Summit is Firebase Extension, David describes it as serverless without any code. The panel discusses this feature and how it works. Another cool feature announced is Google Analytics for Firebase. This allows you to use Firebase tools in conjunction with Google Analytics. The panel considers the smart things you can do in your app with this feature. The next feature the panel discusses is Remote Config which allows you to store data and then pull out that information on demand. If you use the Google Analytics for Firebase you can target specific data for certain audiences. David explains that before this could only be done with native apps. He also explains how in doing this you no longer have to worry about the gtag loader and defines gtag for the panel. The panel gets a little off track as David jokingly explains his beef with Aaron Frost, Frosty. Frosty host My Angular Story and a while back had twitted looking for awesome angular stories. David had responded but never heard back from Frosty. Frosty jokingly says he faxed an invite to David. The panel jokes about how awesome David’s episode will be and tells everyone to look out for his episode. Getting back on track, David gives more examples of ways to use the Remote Config feature on with the Google Analytics for Firebase. Frosty confesses he needs to get better at looking at analytics. Sharing an example from a company he is currently working for, Frosty explains how they made nearly 2 million dollars just by changing the color of a button. The panel considers how minor changes like that can make such a big difference and how analytics helps you target your audience. David shares the story behind writing Angular Fire. Jeff Cross worked on the angular team and started writing angular fire but then left for Nrwl. After Jeff left, David took over and ended up rewriting the entire library. He explains some of the mistakes that they made that led to the rewrite and how he fixed them. The panel wonders at David about using Angular Fire and NgRX. David tells the panel that the Firebase console uses NgRx under the hood and shares what he learned while working on it. Using firebase and NgRx can be very confusing because of the mass duplication of responsibility. David’s advice is to let Firebase and NgRx do their own thing and connect the dots with RxJs. David discusses Firestore, a very advanced caching system and what you can do with it. Including, working offline and setting security rules. Frosty brings up Firebase Messaging Cues, he explains that it is similar to three-way messaging cues except its n-way. David explains that even though he is intrigued by the idea, he does not approve of the name. The panel considers possible use cases for an n-way messaging cue. David explains some of the costs and benefits of this architecture. The episode ends with a discussion of Firebase’s documentation, which is currently a group of markdown files. David defends the simplicity of this documentation style and gives recommendations and resources for those who need more help. On this episode, after months of idle threats, we welcome as our special guest, "Honorary Heathen", Friend of the Pod, and Atheist Pastor Gretta Vosper. Jeff and Gretta have been friends for years. After Jeff reminds Gretta about an experience she has tried to forget, (when they first met) we have a conversation about who she is and how she came to be an atheist who happens to be the Pastor of a United Church of Canada congregation in Toronto. We talk about her work with Oasis in Toronto and building communities. We also dig into the story of her "Heresy Trial" and where she is today in it's aftermath. The Jeff Richey Experience (JRE) is a quartet of seasoned bluegrass, folk, jazz, and rock musicians based in Berea, Kentucky, who are dedicated to performing and recording original music composed by bassist, lead vocalist, and bandleader Jeff Richey. Jeff (a native of Savannah, Georgia) is Professor of Asian Studies, and Mike (a native of Kalida, Ohio) is Professor of Political Science, at Berea College. Robert (a native of Lexington, Virginia) is an alum of Berea College who played with Jeff in the Berea-based acoustic quartet Mud Pi from 2009 through 2012. Randall is a Berea native and longtime roots musician in the region. After Jeff narrowly survived a near-fatal car accident in 2013, he decided to concentrate on performing original music from then on, organizing the first iteration of The JRE on October 24, 2013 with Mike, Robert, and then-Berea faculty member Jason Coomes on lead guitar, with whom the first three JRE albums were recorded. It was Coomes who suggested the self-parodying name “The Jeff Richey Experience,” based on the band's founding purpose. After Coomes' departure in late 2015, tenor saxophonist and then-EKU faculty member Zip Irvin joined up, recording the band's 4th and 5th albums (and parts of its 6th album) before departing in late 2017. Longtime Berea area roots musician and co-proprietor of Berea's Music Makers (instrument shop and recording studio) Randall Conn, a member of the regionally-renowned bluegrass band Blind Ricky who engineered the previous 5 albums, joined up on banjo, dobro, and steel guitar in late 2017. This third and most recent iteration of The JRE recently completed its 6th album, now available on Amazon, CD Baby, iTunes, and Spotify, and will perform next at Noodle Nirvana in Berea on April 21. The group has performed regularly in clubs, festivals, and on radio in central Kentucky since 2014 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Live at the Elmwood All Outdoors Show, we were lucky enough to have Jeff Embry come on and talk about his company and his excellent turkey call designs. These calls sound amazing. This week's guests include J.D. Levite, senior editor of Thrifter.com. Thrifter is a consumer site focused on tracking hot deals on tech and other products, special holiday promotions, etc. This discussion focuses on finding the best deals for the holidays, including top grade 4K TVs and the key features that will maximize your enjoyment. Gene and J.D. will also discuss the top gaming consoles, media streamers, such as Apple TV and Roku, Bluetooth speakers, and even drones and gear for the connected home. You'll also hear why Gene remains skeptical about the Internet of Things. In a special encore segment, you'll also hear from Jeff Gamet, Managing Editor for The Mac Observer. In pop culture mode, Jeff mentions The Shadow before moving to a pair of Fox TV genre shows, "The Orville," a sci-fi series reminiscent of Star Trek with comedic elements, and "Gotham," the Batman prequel. After Jeff admits he hasn't kept up on the super hero shows on The CW, he explains how he got up early in the morning to place an order for an iPhone X at AT&T's site. Although he says he appears to have been successful in placing that order, it appeared there might be glitches in AT&T's ordering system. After a brief discussion about the iPhone X's most controversial features, such as the "notch," the conversation moves the future of the Mac mini. Just what sort of upgrade is Apple working on? Will it offer more powerful components to make it more suitable for use as a web server or a low-cost workstation? Does the delay in updating a product last refreshed in 2014 mean that Apple is working on a major redesign?
This week's guests include outspoken podcaster and commentator Kirk McElhearn. After Kirk mentions seeing a performance in a Shakespearean play by Ian McKellen, the subject turns to pop culture. Kirk isn't a fan of super heroes, well except for The Shadow, an old radio and pulp novel character featured in a 1994 movie that starred Alec Baldwin as the titular character. Gene and Kirk discuss who might play the character if it was brought back. With Apple CEO Tim Cook making positive comments about the future of the Mac mini, the discussion moves the future of the cheapest Mac. The apparent backorder situation with Apple's new flagship smartphone, the iPhone X, is also discussed. Gene mentions a published report that some iPhone X preorders might have been delayed because customers put freezes on their credit reports as the result of the hack at Equifax that impacted 143 million Americans. You'll also hear from Jeff Gamet, Managing Editor for The Mac Observer. In pop culture mode, Jeff mentions The Shadow before moving to a pair of Fox TV genre shows, "The Orville," a sci-fi series reminiscent of Star Trek with comedic elements, and "Gotham," the Batman prequel. This interview made me laugh for sure. Not in a mean way, but rather in a “I can relate” type way. Did I ever go as far as our guest? No… he took things to a whole new level when it comes to going down the penny stock rabbit hole. Our guest is community member Jeff (“Crestronwizard” in the chat room) is an open book about his journey which reveals all sorts of nuggets of experience that can be used as learning points for us all… myself and Chezz included! Jeff is now a full time trader and the way he got there demonstrates an excellent talking point regarding WHEN and WHAT it takes to actually go full time in trading. From penny stock koolaid to now being a full time trader, it’s been quite the journey! Notes: Today we interview Jeff a.k.a. Crestronwizard in the community. He installed and coded for some various audio systems and during a job, he met a successful day trader and started to watch over his shoulder. After his introduction to this gentleman, he started to meet other traders throughout the industry but it wasn’t until quite a few years later that he got interested in utilizing charts. He didn’t trade much from 2005-2007 while his trading was mixed at best. He decided to focus on his business strictly. When he came back to trading he actually traded some penny stocks and took some money out of the market (sort of). He actually ‘drank the koolaid’ so much that he became a distributor for this company and was selling it on his own website and Amazon. After Jeff’s experience with penny stocks, he decided to learn options and while he had months of profitability, overall he ended up losing money because he wasn’t consistent with his sizing. Jeff has a game plan on transitioning to full-time trading. There is a big difference between someone who takes the leap to go full time and has no savings or has taken no preparation. Jeff is on the opposite side of the coin. This has been coming together for multiple years, and his goal is multiple income streams. Quotes: When I get into some things, I get in big. I met a daytrader who turned a small sum into 50-60 million and that’s what introduced me. One of the employees took 23 million dollars off the top and after they started investigating, the person in question took his own life. They had real products and I ended up becoming a distributor for this penny stock. I bought 2 pallets of this stuff. I was trading far out of the money and the other issue was ‘stepping up to go big.’ I went from 1, 2, 3 contracts to 20. Being able to know when something is going the wrong way and to get out. I’m not scared to do that anymore. It’s your emotions versus 100 million other emotions that are in the market at the same time. It’s a big chess game.

I was one step closer to fulfilling this dream until the following summer when a construction accident left me broken and paralyzed from the waist down. The 'experts' told me the bad news that I would never walk or run again...EVER!” After Jeff’s construction accident he picked up the pieces of his shattered dreams. He realized he had a decision to make. He could either stay down and quit or get back up and succeed. He chose the latter! Jeff has turned the impossible to the possible! And inspire others to do the same.” - Jeff Griffin See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In Show 23.0, Mark and Jeff discuss two Cheesy Sci-Fi games -one that is a bit meaty, and one that is very light and fast. But first, it's a Dusty Old Box! Mark describes a Dusty Old Box presented to him by Jeff, all the while trying to avoid an allergic attack. After the Dusty Old Box segment, Jeff launches us into the show's first main topic: Gorilla Games' super-light sci-fi RPG/boardgame Battlestations. Jeff covers the main game elements and play mechanisms, and Mark and Jeff both discuss the things they love about this game (and a couple of its shortcomings). After Jeff's main segment, Mark covers a late addition to the Fluxx game family: Star Fluxx. Mark covers what few rules there are in this game, and what he finds most amusing about it. We'd love to hear from you, so if you get a second, please post a comment to this blog entry (at www.gameopolis.org or gameopolis.libsyn.com), or send us an email at info@gameopolis.org! 00:00:00 Prelude 00:04:43 Dusty Old Box 00:19:35 Battlestations by Gorilla Games 00:59:45 Star Fluxx by Looney Labs 01:16:32 Signoff Related links: 1 Battlestations on Boardgamegeek 2 Star Fluxx on Boardgamegeek Stay tuned for Show 23.5 --our session report on one of these super cheesy sci-fi games-- coming soon. Here in Show 20.0, we discuss a couple games that we are very excited about --one fairly new, and one a true classic! But since this is a whole-number episode, we start things off properly with a Dusty Old Box segment. To be more accurate, though, this is not a Box but rather is a Dusty Old THING...three things, in fact. After the Dusty Old Box segment, Jeff launches us into the show's first main topic: a solitaire strategy game called Phantom Leader. Jeff covers the basics of the game elements and mechanics, and then describes why he loves this game so much. After Jeff's main segment, Mark takes us for a stroll down Memory Lane in the show's second main segment, talking about his all-time favorite game, Merchant of Venus. You might consider this a primer or a "warm-up" for the pending re-release of MoV! Mark covers all of the main rules and the subtleties of this game --the things that separate it from other "pick-up and drop-off" games, and that make MoV his all-time favorite. As always, we love to hear from you our listeners, so please post a comment to this blog entry (at www.gameopolis.org or gameopolis.libsyn.com), or send us an email at info@gameopolis.org! 00:00:00 Prelude 00:01:44 Dusty Old Box 00:11:24 Phantom Leader by DVG 00:37:30 Merchant of Venus by Avalon Hill 01:02:47 Signoff Related links: 1 Phantom Leader on Boardgamegeek 2 Merchant of Venus on Boardgamegeek Stay tuned for Show 20.5 --our session report on one of these fine games-- coming very soon. Too much time has passed, and therefore Mark and Jeff feel the need to sit down and talk about games once again. Since this is a "whole-number episode", they start things off right...by opening up a Dusty Old Box! This Dusty Old Box takes us to places we haven't been before, and then brings us back again. After the Dusty Old Box, Jeff talks a bit about Pizza Box Baseball, published by the On The Line Game Company. Jeff goes through the rules for all four complexity levels of the game, starting with the most basic ("A-league") and then building through Double-A, Triple-A, and finally "Pro-Ball" level. After Jeff's discussion of Pizza Box Baseball, Marks tells us about Days of Wonder's Cargo Noir. Mark describes the game rules, and then discusses some of the common arguments surrounding the theme of this game, and how the theme contributes to the play experience. As always, we'd LOVE to hear from you, so please post a comment to this blog entry (at www.gameopolis.org or gameopolis.libsyn.com), or send us an email at info@gameopolis.org! 00:00:00 Prelude 00:01:51 Dusty Old Box 00:11:24 Pizza Box Baseball 00:35:44 Cargo Noir 00:59:45 Signoff Related links: 1 Pizza Box Baseball on Boardgamegeek 2 Cargo Noir on Boardgamegeek Stay tuned for Show 18.5 --our session report on one of these fine games-- coming to you faster than line-drive to third base! Mark and Jeff challenge tradition in what would --normally-- have been the Dusty Old Box segment of the show. Then, Jeff kicks us off with a deeper treatment of a PREVIOUS Dusty Old Box: Avalon Hill's Freedom In The Galaxy. Jeff takes a high level look at this game to answer his months-long question: is this game truly "ridiculous", as was once asserted? After Jeff's analysis of FitG, Marks tells us about the re-release of DungeonQuest by Fantasy Flight Games, with plenty of comparisons and contrasts with the previous edition of the game. Our Dusty Old Box segment features a real treat that Jeff has been holding-off for a special occasion. Since this is our 25th episode --our "Silver Anniversary Episode"-- Jeff decided now was the time to break it out! After the Dusty Old Box, Mark and Jeff dig into a full docket crammed with gaming goodness. Jeff starts us off by covering not one game, but a gaming genre: Historical naval miniatures in the American Civil War era. Jeff's M.O. is a side-by-side comparison of three of his favorite rules sets: one very simple set, one quite complex, and a third rules set somewhere in between. Jeff compares and contrasts the game mechanics used in each of these three rules sets. After Jeff brings us back from the 19th century, Mark covers one of his family's new favorite card games: Gloom. Before signing off, we listen-in on our interview with Niko White: the designer of the newest expansion card set for the Battleground Fantasy Warfare game, The Dark Elves. Niko tells us about some of his design rationale and his motivations behind this cool and edgy new expansion for one of our favorite games. Thanks again, Niko! We put in another quick call for discussion topics for the Podcast of Hate (companion podcast to last year's Podcast of Love). Come on!!! Please write in and help the Podcast of Hate become a reality! You can post your contributions to this show's comments on the blog page, or you can email them to info@gameopolis.org.
