On this week's show, we bring you Lessons from the Foothills: Berea College and Its Unique Role in America, an address by author Gretchen Dykstra given to the Filson Historical Society in Old Louisville on January 28, 2025. In 1859, a mob of sixty-five prominent armed men rode into Berea, Kentucky, and forced the closure of its integrated one-room schoolhouse. Founded by Kentucky-born abolitionist John Gregg Fee, the school was open to anyone, regardless of their race or gender—a notion that horrified white supremacists. The mob evicted thirty-six community members, including Fee's family, but Fee and the others returned to Berea in 1864 and reestablished the institution, still committed to educating Appalachia's most vulnerable populations. In Lessons from the Foothills, Gretchen Dykstra profiles modern Berea College with its rich and beloved history. This book is the first to focus on contemporary Berea and its eight Great Commitments—the principles and practices that provide clear aspirations for the college and its community. Each chapter functions as a deep dive into the history, practice, and significance of one Great Commitment, from providing opportunity for the most marginalized, to the college's high academic standards and its commitment to environmental sustainability. The college has pledged to "provide an educational opportunity for students of all races, primarily from Appalachia, who have great promise and limited economic resources." To achieve this goal, the college eliminated tuition in 1892 and it also provides jobs for students to assist with living expenses. Drawn from interviews with a range of members of the Berea community, including alumni, students, faculty, and staff, Lessons from the Foothills is an engaging portrait of a unique and historic institution and its enduring commitment to nurture and support academic excellence and service. Gretchen Dykstra, author of Echoes from Wuhan: The Past as Prologue and Civic Pioneers: Local Stories from a Changing America, 1895–1915, and coauthor of Pinery Boys: Songs and Songcatching in the Lumberjack Era, has written articles for several publications, including the New York Times and California History. She lives in Haverford, Pennsylvania. This program was sponsored in honor of the Association for Teaching Black History in Kentucky, the Thomas D. Clark Foundation, in addition to UPK and Berea College. Podcast Intro: Ana Megrelishvili shares her incredible journey from a painful childhood marked by poverty and abuse to finding hope and purpose through faith and community. As a child, Ana faced severe hardships, including hunger and isolation, exacerbated by an abusive alcoholic father. Despite these challenges, she experienced a pivotal moment at 12 or 13 when she felt a profound sense of purpose, after receiving a word of encouragement from God. She shares that she didn't realize it was God at the time but this experience stayed with her even to this day with great detail and vividness. As her story unfolds, you'll see that God was speaking about His plans for her life. Her path to transformation began with a life-changing opportunity to study in the United States as an exchange student, which exposed her to a loving and supportive Christian family. She discovered a way to return to the US via a college scholarship and in her second host family the father was a Christian pastor. These families modeled the heart of God and her experiences planted the seeds of faith, even though she initially resisted religious beliefs. It's so like God to always be creating opportunities for us to know Him if we choose to engage Him, isn't it? She graduates with a degree in business and immediately jumps in to the lucrative career of sales. And she's successful. After building a solid career in sales complete with the various accolades and achieving all of her personal goals such as buying the condo in the beautiful high-rise, having it tailored to her specific taste, driving the fancy car and wearing the beautiful clothes. Yet Ana felt unfulfilled and empty despite achieving her American dream. She knew there had to be more to life and so she begins to question God. God visits again and speaks to her. She responds to what He says and makes the most of trying to follow what she heard. In her obedience she's brought to tears, weeping because of an unexpected gesture from a homeless woman. In that moment a spiritual awakening ignited a genuine desire to pursue the heart of God and discover what her purpose in life was supposed to be. As Ana shares her journey you'll notice the golden thread that God was weaving throughout her life and continues to do so to this day. As she pursued God's heart, laid down all the material things she had collected He brought her full circle and she shares that she's never been more joy filled in all of her life. She now dedicates herself to addressing relational poverty through her global ministry, the Christian Professionals Network Worldwide, an initiative that aims to eradicate homelessness by building supportive communities and providing mentorship to those in need. Let's listen in to discover how God used the very thing, poverty, abuse, .the very things that were supposed to destroy Ana and leave her void of her purpose. But because Ana responded to God, she's discovering what God had written on the pages of her life before even one of them came to be. Dr. William Turner and Dr. Ted Olson talk to Geonoah Davis and Kelly Thompson, two artists whose hip-hop sounds are expanding traditional ideas about music in Appalachia. Borrowing from a generations-old African American heritage of spoken word expression, rap and hip-hop echo a long narrative tradition of African American cultural survival against all odds. These original historical elements are deeply rooted in the fabric of Appalachia, blending into the backdrop of the region's musical character yet revived and brought forward again by these fresh creative talents with their contemporary styles.Geonoah Davis, known by the artistic name geonovah, was born and raised in Big Stone Gap, VA, in the heart of Appalachia's coal and iron industry. He wasn't the first rapper in his family, and early collaborations with his cousin RKMITCH allowed him to develop his powers of poetry into an artistry for hip-hop lyric and verse. Kelly Thompson, a.k.a Pookie, also hails from Big Stone Gap but spent his early childhood in North Carolina. Friends since middle school, he and Geonoah have made music together for many years—Kelly creating beats and Geonoah writing lyrics. Kelly evolved his talents to include music production, learning from local producers in his area.Dr. William Turner is a long-time African American studies scholar and retired Distinguished Professor of Appalachian Studies and Regional Ambassador from Berea College. He was also a research assistant to Roots author Alex Haley and co-editor of the groundbreaking Blacks in Appalachia. In 2021, Turner received Western Carolina University's individual Mountain Heritage Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Southern Appalachian studies. His memoir called The Harlan Renaissance, available from West Virginia University Press, was awarded the prestigious Weatherford Award at the 2022 Appalachian Studies Association Conference.Dr. Ted Olson is a music historian and professor of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University. He is the author of many books, articles, reviews, encyclopedia entries, and oral histories. Olson has produced and compiled a number of documentary albums of traditional Appalachian music including On Top of Old Smoky and Big Bend Killing, both from Smokies Life. His work has received a number of awards, including nine Grammy nominations. The East Tennessee Historical Society honored Olson with its Ramsey Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021.Music featured includes:1. “John Henry” performed by Amythyst Kiah and Roy Andrade from GSMA's (now Smokies Life's) album Big Bend Killing2. “Takin' Me Over” performed by geonovah for the album No Options: Hip-Hop in Appalachia, used courtesy of June Appal Recordings3. “S&S” performed by geonovah for the album No Options: Hip-Hop in Appalachia, used courtesy of June Appal Recordings4. “Black Lives Never Mattered” by RKMITCH featuring geonovah, vocals mixed by Pookie

I am sharing a profound story that has shaped my life in unimaginable ways. This journey, from despair to hope, is one I hope will inspire you as deeply as it has transformed me. My story begins in Moscow, Russia. When I was seven, my father lost his job and turned to alcohol, leaving my mother, who was financially dependent on him, to fend for us. Hunger became a constant companion. At eight, I collected bottles to buy bread and even stole food from classmates. This trauma of constant hunger haunted me into adulthood, making me stock my pantry excessively. Did you know that in the US, 34 million people, including 9 million children, live in food-insecure households? At nine, I was hospitalized with tuberculosis due to malnutrition. For the first time, I felt safe, away from the chaos at home. Our struggles worsened when we moved outside Moscow. We lived in a cramped apartment with my aunt's family, facing eviction threats due to my father's debts. My grandmother saved us by selling her jewelry for plane tickets, preventing us from becoming homeless. At 20, I came to the US on a scholarship. I climbed the corporate ladder, acquiring wealth but feeling something was missing. Four years ago, I had a profound spiritual experience, leading me to feed the hungry in Atlanta. This encounter sparked my mission to help others. In this episode, we sit down with Nancy Gift, an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and Chair of the Sustainability and Environmental Studies Department at Berea College. She joins us to discuss an intriguing facet of environmental studies: aquaponics. Aquaponics is a combination of plant and fish production that uses both aquaculture and hydroponic systems. This method of production is highly sustainable – as it uses the fish waste to fertilize the plants in a human-controlled ecosystem. Bobi Conn's life is an American story. Growing up in a desolate Kentucky holler, her father a drug addicted outlaw who abused her mother, Conn has reinvented herself as a successful writer and mother. But for all Conn's unflinching honesty about her brutal upbringing, she remains proudly America - both in her love of the Kentucky land and her unwillingness to demonize rural America. Her American spirit, inherited from generations of poor folk scratching out a living on the land, is a defiant optimism and offers hope that America can once again reinvent itself in the 21st century.Bobi Conn was born in Morehead, Kentucky, and raised in a nearby holler, where she developed a deep connection with the land and her Appalachian roots. She obtained her bachelor's degree at Berea College, the first school in the American South to integrate racially and to teach men and women in the same classrooms. After struggling as a single mother, she worked multiple part-time jobs at once to support her son and to attend graduate school, where she earned a master's degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing. In addition to writing, Bobi loves playing pool, cooking, being in the woods, attempting to grow a garden, and spending time with her incredible children.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Welcome to episode 223 of the Grow Your Law Firm podcast, hosted by Ken Hardison. In this episode, Ken sits down with Tanner Jones. They discuss essential strategies for optimizing Local Service Ads (LSAs) on Google, emphasizing the importance of quick response to calls and messages, consistent positive reviews, and effective use of the LSA dashboard. The discussion also touches on the significance of bid and budget management, lead nurturing and adapting marketing strategies to Google's evolving algorithms and AI influences. As Vice President of Business Development, Tanner Jones oversees all business development opportunities for Consultwebs and our clients. He has the privilege of speaking with virtually every law firm that contacts Consultwebs and working with them to determine how we may accomplish their digital marketing goals. Tanner earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a concentration in Management, from Berea College in 2008. His journey with Consultwebs began in 2009, and he now has over a decade of experience consulting with law firms on case-driving online marketing strategies. He was originally drawn to Consultwebs because of how we have remained a leader in the niche of legal marketing. Tanner often quotes the Canadian hockey player, Wayne Gretzky, when he says, “Skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.” For Tanner, Consultwebs strives to do just that. He says, “I've always been drawn to companies with an intentional focus because it often breeds stronger results, efficiencies, and scalability.” When it comes to what sets Consultwebs apart, Tanner's first thought is the distinctiveness of our team. “We are proud to have built one of the strongest teams in the country, ranging from licensed attorney content writers, innovative social media consultants, and award-winning designers, to expert programmers, and highly experienced search marketing consultants. We know that we are only as strong as our individual team members, and we hire accordingly.” Tanner is a native of Waynesville, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife, daughter, and son. Aside from spending time with his family, Tanner also enjoys camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, golfing, and playing “any other competitive sport available.” However, he admits that his goal for sports has gone from “win” to “don't get injured.” What you'll learn about in this episode: 1. Optimizing LSA Effectiveness: Rapidly respond to calls and messages to improve user experience and enhance Google ranking. Focus on accumulating positive feedback on Google Business profiles while actively managing and responding to reviews. 2. Strategic Use of LSA Dashboard: Use the dashboard to detect useful patterns and keywords for more accurate targeting. Employ the notes section for adding pertinent keywords and additional details for each lead to refine targeting. 3. Enhancing Lead Engagement: Gain a comprehensive understanding of various lead stages, such as 'Booked' within the LSA dashboard. Maintain regular activity and interactions with leads to demonstrate engagement and improve visibility. 4. Budgeting and Bidding Strategies: Evaluate the benefits of automatic bidding versus manual adjustments to optimize ad performance. Experiment with different budgeting strategies to discover the most cost-effective approach for your firm. 5. Prioritizing Responsive Communication: Ensure phone calls are answered immediately to capture every opportunity. Enable and utilize the message function to provide swift responses to potential clients' inquiries.

Rob Williams, Papaw Paul, and Jason sit down for a conversation that is a true adventure through the history and life in Sand Gap, Kentucky. Though you can't tell it now in the 1940's Sand Gap was a booming town! With several mining companies and multiple coal temples, all businesses were doing really well back in the day. They talk about the Moore Holler~ it had electricity while most of Jackson County was still without. Some of the mines had tram systems to haul out coal and others used mules to pull their load. The miners worked long hard hours and got paid by the ton and not buy the hour. They also discuss life during the Great Depression, vigilantes with bundles of switches, horrific accidents due to the coal industry, Jim Bob throwing dogs in the fire, a few Bear tales and so much more. Rob began his career as a school teacher, retired as principal from Sand Gap Elementary, taught at Berea College, and now runs his own construction company. Being 58 years of age Rob is the guy with eleven lives. He has survived being shot, falls, and so many other things, but surviving everything he is a wealth of knowledge on local history and is glad to share his stories with anyone who will listen. We thank God for everyone who has decided to stay another day! We thank You for listening and your continuing support! Get ready for another great episode on "Conversations with Akilah". This episode will contain commentary and discussion on "Salvation: Black People and Love" by bell hooks. This is a 3-part series. The following episode is on the Intro. Be sure to tune in to continue this conversation. *Trigger Warning* This episode may contain topics that may be offensive and upsetting. OPINIONS and VIEWS shared here are my own.Listeners discretion is advised. In this episode you will learn: "Emotional Incest is abuse" A little bit about what the author bell hooks relationship was like with a man before his friend got involved How white supremacy has eroded the black family where intimacy is concerned A little more about the author (taken from www.bellhooksbooks.com): Gloria Jean Watkins, or her famous pen name, bell hooks, is one such person. As an American feminist, author, social activist and African American woman, Hooks has been a party to inequality at its finest. Her pen name comes from her great-grandmother on her mother's side, Bell Blair Hooks, a woman who was known for always speaking her mind. Drawing inspiration from this strong woman, Hooks works to draw attention to the issues and write from the heart. Hooks draws her inspiration from her life, her experiences, and the hope for a better future. Through her postmodernist perspective she has addressed a wide range of issues including race, class, gender in education, sexuality, art, history, mass media, and of course, feminism. Hooks has proven time and again that despite the hurdles and challenges that have been set before her, she is not afraid of the challenge. Hooks continues to teach and work at Berea College as well as her writing and continues to address issues that many find too sensitive to deal with. Hooks works to end the oppression, end the racism, and end the sexism that has become so deeply ingrained in our society. Through her continued dedication and work, Hooks hopes that her example may be the one that makes the ultimate difference in tipping the scales toward true equality. All I'm saying is, you MIGHT want to go and buy this book .

Cities are nothing without the streets—the arteries through which goods, people, and ideas flow. Neighborhood by neighborhood, block by block, the city streets are where politics begins. In Struggle for the Street: Social Networks and the Struggle for Civil Rights in Pittsburgh (UNC Press, 2023), Jessica D. Klanderud documents the development of class-based visions of political, social, and economic equality in Pittsburgh's African American community between World War I and the early 1970s. Klanderud emphasizes how middle-class and working-class African Americans struggled over the appropriate uses and dominant meanings of street spaces in their neighborhoods as they collectively struggled to define equality. In chapters that move from one community to the next, Klanderud tracks the transformation of tactics over time with a streets-eye view that reveals the coalescing alliances between neighbors and through space. Drawing on oral histories of neighborhood residents, Black newspapers, and papers from the NAACP and Urban League, this study reveals complex class negotiations in the struggle for civil rights at the street level. Jessica D. Klanderud is associate professor of African and African American studies and history at Berea College. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. His research interests are Cultural Studies; Critical Theory; Environmental History; Medieval (Intellectual) History; Gothic Studies; 18th and 19th Century British Literature. YouTube channel.
