Laddie Stern is the Founder of Stern Auto Group, a 20-store empire he has built over 65 years in the car business. He started as a wholesaler for his uncle before buying and scaling the Skyline and Hatfield auctions into the country's largest privately held auction company, then returned to grow a new car group alongside his son Jonathan. He speaks candidly about the 2008 downturn that changed how he manages cash for good, the mistakes he made prioritizing the business over his family, and what he looks for before letting the next generation, including his own grandchildren, into the business. Kielan Whitner made more in his first 90 days selling cars than he made in an entire year working as a certified public accountant at a Big Four firm, and he says that gap is exactly why automotive struggles to attract the talent it needs. A fourth-generation dealer, he built his foundation on the fixed side of the business, service advisor to service manager, before stepping into the general manager role, and now leans on a network of industry mentors and organizations like NAMAD to keep leveling up. Great service managers don't simply survive the month—they build stronger teams, improve the customer experience and create consistently profitable service departments. In this episode of Service Drive Revolution, automotive fixed operations expert Chris Collins reveals five overlooked habits that separate great dealership service managers from average ones. Great service managers: 1. Reject the status quo and continually improve their processes. 2. Know their numbers and understand how to change them. 3. Become "people collectors" who constantly recruit, develop and retain talented employees. 4. Make the customer experience easy, trustworthy and worth returning for. 5. Find coaches and mentors who challenge them to keep learning. Chris explains why dealership service departments are closed-loop systems, how tribal knowledge keeps managers trapped in outdated processes and why exceptional performance can actually make a manager's job easier—not harder. The conversation also examines service department profitability, net-to-gross, unproductive wages, CSI, NPS, technician recruiting, service advisor performance and customer retention. You'll learn why sales scripts and objection handling cannot replace customer trust, why technology such as video multipoint inspections cannot fix a broken process and why successful service managers are always recruiting. Chris also discusses former CIA intelligence officer Andrew Bustamante and his book Outsmart Everyone: Spy Skills to Gain an Unfair Advantage in Work and Life. The team explores charisma, vulnerability, intentional leadership, parenting and the ability to make genuine connections with people. This episode is for: Dealer principals General managers Fixed operations directors Service managers Parts managers Service advisors Automotive technicians Dealership and repair-shop leaders. If you want a healthier, more profitable automotive service operation, this episode provides a practical leadership framework you can immediately apply.
In this episode of the Industry Spotlight, joining host Sam D'Arc are John Keohane, VP of Operations and Partner at Temecula Valley Buick GMC, and Liam Golightly, SVP of Customer Success at Podium to discuss how AI operator agents are giving dealership leaders a way to run their entire operation without being in every conversation themselves. John built his own AI agent, which he nicknamed Emily, to scrape telematics data, run weekly revival campaigns on stale leads, and even coach his sales team by timing how fast they respond before Emily steps in. The results are hard to ignore: Emily replaced his old bulk texting tool, helped uncover a customer-pay revenue drop in six seconds instead of weeks, and pushed his service department's customer-pay repair orders up 12 to 13 percent this year. For a single-point dealer competing against much larger groups, John says the technology has become a genuine equalizer. This episode of the Car Dealership Guy Podcast is brought to you by Podium. In this episode of the Industry Spotlight, joining host Sam D'Arc are Eric Cohen, CEO of Merchant Advocate, and Cole Frankman, Owner/Operator of Frankman Motors, to discuss why credit card processing fees keep climbing year after year and how dealers can uncover the hidden increases buried in their merchant statements. Eric reveals that 80 percent of dealerships he reviews are being overcharged by 20 to 25 percent, and explains why the fee never really stops rising: the sales rep who set up the account earns a cut of every transaction for as long as the dealer stays a client. Cole shares how a routine expense review turned into a two-month rabbit hole before an independent audit uncovered over six figures in annual savings, all without switching processors or changing equipment. The conversation exposes why dealers rarely read past page one of their statements, and what that costs them. This episode of the Car Dealership Guy Podcast is brought to you by Merchant Advocate. Is there a crisis quietly building in the U.S. auto industry? Car prices surged. Monthly payments exploded. Consumers took on larger loans at higher interest rates—and now we're starting to see signs of stress. In today's episode, we're diving into a great viewer question about the health of the U.S. auto market and, more specifically, the growing concern surrounding auto loan delinquencies and defaults. The numbers deserve attention. U.S. auto loan balances have climbed to roughly $1.7 trillion, while serious delinquencies remain elevated. At the same time, consumers originated a record $211 billion in new auto loans during the second quarter of 2026. So the big question is: Are we looking at normal consumer-credit stress—or the early stages of something much bigger? On today's show, we'll break down: Why auto loans have become increasingly difficult for consumers to afford What rising delinquencies and defaults are telling us How higher interest rates changed the economics of buying a vehicle What happens when borrowers become upside-down on their car loans Whether repossessions could create additional pressure on used-car prices How falling used-car values could ripple through lenders and dealerships Which parts of the auto industry may be most vulnerable Whether this could become a broader problem for the U.S. economy We'll also look at the investment side of the equation. If stress in auto credit continues to build, who gets hurt first? Automakers? Dealerships? Used-car retailers? Banks? Subprime lenders? And perhaps more importantly... Where could the trading opportunities be? One thing is important to keep in perspective: the data doesn't currently prove that we're facing an auto version of the 2008 housing crisis. The New York Fed's latest data shows that the flow of auto loans entering serious delinquency has recently been relatively stable, even though overall stress remains elevated. That's exactly why this topic is so interesting. The warning lights are flashing—but that doesn't necessarily mean the engine is about to blow. We'll separate the social-media hype from the actual numbers and determine just how concerned traders and investors should be. For additional research, check out the New York Fed Household Debt and Credit Report, which tracks auto loans, credit cards, mortgages and consumer delinquencies. Listen now:

Welcome to the Monday Minute – your weekly reset to lead better, think clearer, and build your independent dealership with intention. Sponsored by Auto Analytix. If every decision has to come through you, every approval sits on your desk, and every problem requires your attention – you have not built a business. You have built a job. And no matter how many hours you work, you are never getting more time. The only way out is delegation. Most dealers just do not know what that actually means. In this episode, Jeff and Luke get into the delegation conversation that most independent dealers avoid because they genuinely believe they are the best person for every task in the building. Jeff draws a hard line between dumping work on someone and actually developing people – giving ownership, not just a checklist, and trusting the outcome instead of making every decision a bottleneck. The most successful dealers he knows do not do everything. Some of the best ones cannot even log into their own DMS. What they do is lead the vision, build the culture, make strategic decisions, and protect the financials – and they let everything else run without them. Luke adds the AI layer that changes the math entirely: bank reconciliation, email drafts, job descriptions, training materials, marketing content, data organization – tasks that used to require a person or your own time can now run without either. The question to ask before every decision lands on your desk this week is one line: does this actually need me?Your assignment this week: write down five things you are doing right now that someone else – or something else – could do instead. Pick one recurring responsibility and hand it off today. When you assign it, do not just give the task – explain the purpose and define what success looks like. When an employee walks into your office to hand you a problem that is not yours to solve, hand it back. Then at the end of the week, measure what you got back. Because every hour you spend doing work someone else could do is one less hour you have to actually grow your dealership. Great leaders are not measured by how much they do. They are measured by how much they empower the people around them.Review this week's Sunday newsletter at TheIndependentDealer.com for the full theme and exercises. Not subscribed yet? Dealerships have added BDCs, technician videos, digital inspections, AI, warranty processes, new software, and more administrative responsibilities. So why does the customer experience often feel the same—or even worse? In this Ten Mil Mastery conversation, Marshall, Josh Arnold, Brent Osmond, and Joshua Taylor compare automotive and heavy-duty service departments, examine how the service advisor role has changed, and discuss the administrative work increasingly being pushed onto technicians. The problem may not be the technology itself. The problem is adding tools without delivering the training, expectations, leadership, and measurement required to use them successfully. The practical takeaway for dealers is straightforward:Map every task your advisors and technicians perform.Separate customer relationship work from purely administrative work.Train each process clearly.Measure whether the process improves communication, productivity, customer satisfaction, and profitability.Every new tool should make it easier for your people to care for the customer. Dealership advertising is nothing new. But where those ads are being shown and the strategy behind them is always evolving. With new advertising channels and changing customer behaviors, it can be difficult getting your ads in front of the right audience by doing it the way it's always been done. Today, Greg's catching up with Owen Moon, CEO at DealerStream. Owen was on Connected 131 back in 2024 and it was great to hear about his new focus in the industry - connecting dealerships to customers through advertising on popular streaming platforms. In this episode, Greg and Owen discuss: -The value of streaming platforms as advertising opportunities, especially with the growth of that audience. -How to capitalize on a mid-funnel approach, capturing customers before they've made their decision. -Ways dealerships using streaming advertising today are seeing success. If you're looking for ways to increase your dealership visibility and reach, or are just interested in other advertising opportunities, give this conversation a listen! And don't forget that Amplify 2026 is happening on August 10 and 11. The event brings together some of the brightest minds in automotive to share ideas, best practices, and innovations that are shaping the future of the industry. We'd love to have you join us there!

Fortunately, rising costs don't necessarily mean higher operating expenses. In this episode, Ken and Jason explain how dealers can uncover opportunities to reduce unnecessary spending without sacrificing the customer experience, and how to take advantage of a shifting landscape to get ahead of the competition. #automotive #dealership

Welcome to the Monday Minute – your weekly reset to lead better, think clearer, and build your independent dealership with intention. You could take the same million dollars and put it into a dealership, the stock market, an HVAC company, or a dozen other opportunities. The question is not which one sounds better. The question is which one gives you the best return. And if you cannot answer that for your own dealership right now, that is the problem. In this episode, Jeff and Luke make the case for ROI as not just a financial metric but a leadership mindset – and the one number that almost never shows up in a composite or gets discussed at convention despite being the most important scorecard in any business. Jeff walks through what return on investment actually looks like at the dealership level: not just the big picture of what your capital is generating annually, but the granular version – what is your advertising spend returning, what did that new software system actually do for you, what did sending your team to training produce, and is that vendor who told you to spend more money with them actually moving the needle? The best dealers are not making emotional decisions about vendors, marketing sources, or tools. They are measuring. Luke adds that the strongest operators he knows talk about their entire business in ROI terms – and that AI can now do what previous generations never had access to: summarize reports, identify trends, compare performance periods, and surface opportunities that get buried in a stack of DMS exports nobody has time to read.Your assignment this week: identify five major investments in your business right now – marketing, staffing, software, training, vendors – and define what success actually looks like for each one. Then pull the data, use AI tools to organize and compare expected results against actual results, and ask the hard question in black and white: what is producing a return and what is not. If something is not working, it is not an emotional conversation. Adjust it, negotiate it, replace it, or cut it – and take those savings and put them into something that actually moves the needle.Review this week's Sunday newsletter at TheIndependentDealer.com for the full theme and exercises. Not subscribed yet? In this episode of the Industry Spotlight, joining host Sam D'Arc are Bill O'flanagan, Dealer Principal at Reedman Toll Auto Group, and Todd Kaminski, Head of Direct Markets at Zurich North America to discuss the one interview question that predicts almost everything about whether a new hire will thrive or wash out, and why building a culture of transparency and daily accountability is the real fix for automotive's turnover problem. O'Flanagan shares his go-to interview question, "Who was your best boss and why, and who was your worst boss and why," and explains how the answer tells him everything he needs to know about how someone wants to be managed. He also breaks down why he shares full financial statements with every manager, a move his peers once called "insane," and how a daily 10-minute results call with every manager helped seven of his ten service centers set growth records this year. Kaminski adds a rare outside view from three decades working inside dealerships on why transparency, meritocracy, and recognition are what separate cultures that retain talent from those that don't.
