On this episode I chatted with Tori Beechum owner of Culture Coffee. I met Tori a couple of months ago while recording with Vernon from GrpFly. Tori does some creative work as a part time gig but after talking I realized there's a lot more behind her camera. So we found time to dive into her story. Tori and her family ran a restaurant for 5 years in Oklahoma City while coming to the later years they were approached to open a coffee shop in a new apartment development near OU Medical. With no background in coffee but a vision for the area they decided to give it a shot. That coffee shop is Culture Coffee. One of the reasons for taking this leap was the history in the area and the potential to help raise this area. Tori tells us all about their specialty coffee's, hiring the right people and building a culture around serving a product. On this episode I chatted Ban Nguyen. Ban is from Vietnam and came to the states after the Vietnam war as a refuge with his family. Ban and his family came to the states and were adopted by a gentleman in Tulsa. This Oklahoman owned a gas station, took Ban's family in gave them a job and a way to make a living. After much hard work Ban's father was able to save up and buy a house. Ban and his families new life in Oklahoma had started. Ban went to school in Tulsa before being accepted in to OSU. With education being the road to success for his family he studied hard but also equally enjoyed his new life at OSU. New experiences, independence and the American college life. GO POKES! After college Ban struggled to find a job due to the economy at that time in the mid 80's so he went to work for his father in law Mr Lee at Jimmy's Egg. With no intention of ever working at a restaurant Ban started to pick things up and quickly got to work for his father in law. Soon he decided to open up his own Jimmy's Egg on NW highway and McArther near Bethany Oklahoma. That was it, Ban was now in the restaurant business. Since that day he hasn't looked back with 24 stores of his own and over 70 stores in 11 states Jimmy's Egg is a well known breakfast spot for many in Oklahoma. There is a lot more to this story and I'm hesitant to share anymore to spoil the story. You'll just have to listen. Thank you to Ban for coming on the podcast to share your story and to Mr Le for the legacy he has left in this state, may he rest in peace. This episode is presented by the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. Rowland at the time. This opportunity lit his fire and he began his long childhood dream of calling games. Through the help of some SNU faculty Toby moved to intern at Channel 9 where he worked after college for a decade until the OU job came available. Toby talks about the interview process, the dream, getting through each round and then meeting with President Boren for over an hour talking life. He got the call and his dream became a reality. Matt lives in Guthrie right now. But he grew up in Alabama in a poor community. Not a successful world beater from day one. He was kicked out of school after being sent home for the 7th time and was not asked to return. At this time Matt's grandfather had passed and had left his parents some money, that money sent Matt and his sister to a private Christian school. This is where Matt's life takes a turn. For the first time he has teachers who actually care about him, care about his future and he starts to excel. He graduates and accepts a scholarship to university for engineering. Growing up in the country Matt was naturally good with his hands and could practically fix anything. But something happened and Matt decided not to go to college for engineering but to attend a college to become a minister. Fast forward Matt raises $8000 for a charity to provide clean water in Africa and is sent with that money on a mission trip to Africa. This is where the story gets really interesting and honestly I'm going to skim the details because Matt does a far better job of telling the story on tomorrow podcast. But in short, after a young boy dies in the village that Matt and his wife are living in because of dirty water. He builds a well, and another and then insists the help of Water4. He stays in Africa building wells across the country for years!! Only to be crippled by the same dirty water that killed the young boy. He is rushed to the hospital, eventually sent back to the states for medical attention and spends months recovering. The drug that saves him is over $3000 a month! Matt's journey kicks on again from this point, after thinking he was done, thinking his life was over he has a new perspective on the opportunity we call life. He is over weight at 300+ lbs and decides that he is going to run a half marathon. He starts by running to the end of his driveway and back. Then that year he runs a half marathon, then a marathon and then runs an ultra marathon. This year Matt was supposed to complete his first half iron man. Due to Covid19 the event was cancelled. That didnt stop him, he did it solo with the help of his wife and kids, rode, ran and swam it all in Guthrie. Matt has also ran the rim to rim to rim in the Grand Canyon. Thats one end, down into the valley, up the other end and then back. Matt is a true inspiration and now is the CEO of Water4 impacting lives all across Africa building wells and providing clean water for thousands. On this episode myself and Shannon interviewed Dr Geroge Henderson. There's so much to talk about in this episode and so much to share so we've devided it into two parts. This first part Dr Henderson talks about his early childhood up to coming to Norman Oklahoma. In Part 2 we'll dive into his work at OU and his thoughts on the future. BioIn 1967, Dr. George Henderson became the University of Oklahoma’s third full-time African American faculty member at the Norman campus. In 1969, he became the first African American in Oklahoma universities to be a distinguished professor when he was appointed the Sylvan N. Goldman Professor of Human Relations, Education and Sociology. Later, he was appointed to three other distinguished professorships: David Ross Boyd Professor, Regents’ Professor, and Kerr-McGee Presidential Professor. After he became the Goldman Professor, he founded the Human Relations Department, which he chaired for 20 years. From 1996 to 2000, he was dean of the College of Liberal Studies. Thus, he was the first African American at the University of Oklahoma to create a degree-granting department; and the first African American dean of a degree-granting college on the Norman campus. Although he retired from the University in 2006, he still teaches on a part-time basis. A civil rights pioneer in higher education in Oklahoma, George Henderson has achieved many other notable accomplishments. His awards and honors include being the recipient of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Medal for the Outstanding College and University Professor in 2000; State of Oklahoma Black Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003; induction into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2003 and also induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2003. The Henderson Scholars Program and the Henderson-Tolson Cultural Center on the Norman campus bear his name. The University of Oklahoma awarded him an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Humane Letters) at the May 2011 Commencement. In 2015, Oklahoma Today Magazine named Dr. Henderson one of the forty-five most influential African American Oklahomans. A race relations and civil rights scholar, George Henderson has taught university courses and spoken at conferences and workshops throughout the United States and internationally. In addition, he has written 34 books and 50 articles. In 2011, the Oklahoma Historical Society selected Race and the University as the Outstanding Book on Oklahoma History published in 2010. Also in 2011, Dr. Henderson and his wife Barbara were recipients of the Xenia Institute’s Sam Mathews Social Justice Award. They were the first African American property owners in Norman. On this episode myself and Eric Granado interviewed Raymond and Bo from Dorwarts Custom Cowboy Boots in Guthrie Oklahoma. Raymond is world famous in the custom cowboy boot scene. His apprentice Bo is quickly making a name for himself learning from one of the best. Now as you all know, I am as far from a cowboy as it gets. Born in the UK, cowboying is not a thing! So walking into their shop in Guthrie, seeing the history on the walls, the machines that are older than I am, the smells, the dust. The character of the whole place just oozes stories. Some of those stories made it onto todays podcast. Picture a cowboy in your head. What does he look like? Yeah thats Raymond and Bo. Raymond isn't on social media, he just got a flip phone... Bo's wife runs his Facebook page where you can see his designs. "Lockhart Cowboy Customs" Bo's wait list right now is about 3 months and his custom boots start at $1500. Raymonds boots start at $3000 and his wait list is right around a year. I've recorded over 175 episodes now and as far as Oklahoma goes, this is as Oklahoma as it gets. On this episode I sat with Matt Brown. Matt's family business Red Rock Distribution Company has been distributing fuel around Oklahoma for the past 75 years. This is one of those Oklahoma generational businesses that reminds you who we are as Oklahoman's.Company History"In 1937, Barney Brown, Sr. and his two sons opened a single gasoline station in Oklahoma City at SW 10th & Walker. With gasoline selling for $0.12 - $0.14 a gallon, the small family business began selling and distributing motor fuel in the Oklahoma City metro area. From the original Pepper’s Refinery on S. High Street, Brown & Sons Oil Company started by delivering fuel to commercial customers like Lee Way Motor Freight. At the end of WWII, Barney Brown Sr. and his two sons, moved their office to the Oklahoma City Stockyards, where they worked hard to service vehicles and grow their commercial bobtail delivery service.By 1957, the Brown’s had acquired another distributorship, Red Rock, from the first Conoco jobber in the state, Ed Klein. After the acquisition, the Brown’s formally changed the name of the new company to Red Rock Distributing Company, Inc. As the family business grew, other companies were purchased, and assimilated into a company that not only sold gasoline and diesel, but lubricants, lawn mowers, coolers, and auto parts. In 1969, Barney’s son, Steve, joined the business and by 1975 Steve had developed a convenience store concept called, Save-A-Stop. After three generations, the company had grown from operating a single service station, to operating 25 convenience stores in the metro Oklahoma City area. Their transportation business had also grown from a single 308-gallon bobtail truck, to several 9,500-gallon transport vehicles. And if you ask Barney Brown, Jr. the secret to their success, he won’t hesitate to tell you, “We have a family that values integrity.”Integrity is just one of the words that has been used to describe this unique family and the their business. According to Steve, “This company was founded on several principles we still follow today. First, we live up to the deals we make. Second, we service our customers with honesty and integrity. Third, we are always ready and willing to adapt our business plan when the business environment changes. And finally, we treat our customers like family.”In 2001, Steve’s son Matt returned to Oklahoma City, and became a fourth generation marketer at Red Rock. Together, Steve and Matt have continued to expand and grow the core parts of the business. “I am so excited to see Matt come back and work with his Dad. You know there aren’t many companies that can say they have had four generations of experience in a single business. It makes me very proud to see them carrying on our family's legacy with such great success and integrity, “ Barney said. Before returning to Oklahoma City, Matt spent 5 years working for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville and San Antonio, TX.Over the years, the Browns have been involved with many professional and civic organizations. Organizations like The Oklahoma Trucking Association, The Oklahoma Grocers Association, The Petroleum Marketers Association of America, and from its inception, the Oklahoma Petroleum Marketers Association, (OPMA-OACS). In addition, both Steve and Matt volunteer within the community and serve on several non-profit boards. Steve said, “In an ever changing business and cultural climate, it is important to support other businesses within our industry and give our time and expertise to help improve the community in which we live. Participating in trade organizations gives us the opportunity to address concerns and solve problems by talking with business people who share the same goals. Serving our community by volunteering our time and resources helps to improve the lives of our customers and employees. Both Matt and myself have always felt a strong desire to give back to the communities we work and live within. We hope to make a difference by setting a good example for our employees, customers, and suppliers. We hope that they see our commitment to improving the lives of others and will follow our lead.”For more than 75 years, Red Rock Distributing Company has continued to grow its transportation and wholesale fuel distributing business. With the sale of the Save-A-Stop convenience store chain in 1997, Red Rock decided to invest more in their core wholesale fuel business by becoming a leading supplier of high-octane racing fuels for many tracks and racers in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. With a fleet of 17 transports and 2 bobtail trucks that service locations all over Oklahoma, they now sell wholesale branded fuel from Shell, Conoco, Phillips 66, Valero, Shamrock and Sinclair as well as unbranded fuel from some 12 additional suppliers. In this new era of business, that seems to love high-tech companies with high-dollar office space and limited life expectancy, Red Rock Distributing Company has proven that a few basic principals, shared by an entire family, is all it takes to build, grow, and sustain a business and community for future generations." On this episode I interviewed Amy Downs. Amy survived the OKC Bombing on April 19, 1995."Amy shouldn’t even be here. Seven years into her job at what we now know as Allegiance Credit Union, a bomb exploded in her building, killing 168 people, including 18 of her 33 co-workers. Amy fell three stories and was buried alive for over six hours.Today, Amy is now President and an award-winning CEO. Rather than being taken down by that catastrophe, Allegiance Credit Union grew by 400% and is consistently voted a Best Place to Work in Oklahoma. This year, Amy was recognized by the Oklahoma Journal Record as a “Most Admired CEO.”Drawing on her new book about these experiences, called “Hope Is A Verb,” Amy is excited to share with you what she has learned about how you can respond to this crisis we find ourselves in — and how to actually have your organization come out of it even stronger."Presented by the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. This episode was recorded in February of this year before any of the covid19 complications. Thank you for understanding that some of the events we talk about in this episode have been rescheduled or postponed. On this episode I sat with college friend Nick Chafey to share his testimony in memory of his mother Rona Linn Kuehner-Chafey who passed in the OKC Bombing. Nick grew up in the Bethany area. His whole family lives in Bethany so naturally he wanted to attend SNU, which is where we met.Ever since I’ve known Nick he’s always wanted to play soccer. He played for SNU and then after changing his major he was ineligible to play. However, he still got his soccer fix when we played some intramural indoor soccer.Nick reached out to me a few months back and asked if he could share his testimony and his mom’s memory to our listeners. He was four in 1995 when his mom passed. His recollection of that day is as any four year old would be. He doesn’t have many memories of his mom; all his memories are learned memories, stories from others about his mom, what she was like and who she was. His older sister was 14 at the time. Her memory of the experience is completely different as well as his Dad or friends who knew his mom. So Nick remembers his mom and the whole experience differently to those of his family. With the 25-year anniversary this was a very special moment and I am extremely grateful to have a platform like This is Oklahoma to share Nicks story to you today. In loving memory of his mother Rona Linn Kuehner-Chafey and those who lost their lives on April 19,1995.Presented by the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. The first woman elected as Chief of the Cherokee Nation was Wilma Pearl Mankiller. She was born November 18, 1945 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Her father was a full-blood Cherokee and her mother was of Dutch and Irish ancestry. Wilma served as Principal Chief from December 1985 – 1995.Wilma Mankiller was motivated to become active in Cherokee tribal affairs due to several life events that she discusses in detail in this interview recorded in 2009.Wilma was inducted into the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame in 1986, The Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1994 and received the Presidential Medal of Honor in 1998.Up until her diagnosis with pancreatic cancer in late winter/spring 2010, she continued to write, speak and teach American Indian Culture proudly living on Mankiller Flats, in rural Adair County, Oklahoma, on her grandfather’s land.
On this episode I sat with Heisman Trophy winner Jason White. Jason grew up in Tuttle Oklahoma. Dreamt of playing football for OU one day. With hardwork and determination he made his dream a reality. Coach Stoops recruited him and he went on to become one of OU's Heisman Trophy winners.Unfortunately for Jason he was riddled with injury forcing him to retire way too early. After making the decision he tried a number of different things, investments, owned stores selling OU and OSU merchandise. Until one day Mr Gregory from ACS asked him to do some radio advertisements for football season. That relationship grew over time and in 2010 Jason was brought on full time working as customer service for ACS. Can you imagine being a sooner fan and answering the phone to Jason White asking how he can help you? Jason has progressed over the years, recorded a lot of advertising campaigns and is now in charge of the commercial division of ACS.I really enjoyed my time interviewing Jason, we talked a lot about his love for golf, how he now watches games, his top 3 moments in college football and what the future looks like for ACS. On this episode I sat down with my friend, golf partner, pastor and Ducks fan Jason Smith. I met Jason as a sophomore in college when he became our golf team Chaplin. Jason came to Oklahoma to play college golf from Ontario Oregon in 1999. At SNU he felt called to become a pastor and met his awesome wife Katie. During college Jason interned at OKC First Church of the Nazarene where he still works today. Over the years Jason has become a great friend to me and my wife. He officiated both our weddings ( a story for another day ) This was a special podcast for me. Its one I've been wanting to record since I started the podcast over 2 years ago and I'm glad we made it happen. It is unheard of to be the Assistant Director at the age of 28 but Jeremiah has worked extremely hard for this foundation. This isn't just a job for Jeremiah and we are lucky to have him working for one of Oklahoma's best Children's Hospitals. Not only has he worked hard but his son, niece and nephew have all been treated by the professionals at Children's. On this episode I sit down with friend Hannah Griffis. I met Hannah through her husband Matthew; we played golf together at SNU. Hannah has transformed herself in the past two years. Catching herself in the mirror one day she wasn't happy with what she saw and felt. Right there she decided to make a change. While working full time for DHS she started the journey to a healthier lifestyle by working out a lot. However, because she didn't change her eating habits, there was very little improvement. With this awareness she dove into all the information she could research about nutrition and dieting. Hannah lost 40lbs by counting her calories, weighing her food and being conscious of what she puts in her body. After this transformation, friends started to ask how? Hannah started a Facebook group to tell everyone asking. After her friends started to transform (my wife being one of them) Hannah put her findings into an Ebook to help others change their image. First time gym goers, people with zero nutritional knowledge. People like most of us who want to workout but don't want to get sore, or women who don't want to get stole at the gym. My wife lost 20lbs by weighing her food, eating the correct portion sizes and oh eating ice-cream every night!! A small cup but she still ate ice cream every night. If you are struggling in this department, you don't like how you look and you want to make a change. Reach out to Hannah, its not hard its just doing the work. You deserve it. On this episode I sit down with restaurant entrepreneur Hal Smith. Trying hard to find the words to describe how amazing this episode was. For me this was one of my favorite interviews. Hal has so many great stories. I think we just scratched the surface. He's a huge supporter of Oklahoma. Born in Ardmore now living in Norman. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2017 a moment that he said was one of the biggest achievements. Hal is still growing his concepts today, on average 8 stores a year. Both his children have a love of food and continue to work in the industry. His wife Sandy loves her golf and they try to play every Sunday afternoon. Jim Hewgley Jr. was an independent oilman who served two terms as Tulsa’s mayor from 1966 to 1970. In his first mayoral-election victory, he defeated incumbent Mayor Jim Maxwell, who was seeking a fifth consecutive term. And Jim defeated Maxwell again in 1968. Hewgley had been a registered Democrat until 1956, when he became a Republican and was the first Tulsa Republican mayor to be reelected.Hewgley was mayor when the city was governed by the Tulsa City Commission. Shortly after Hewgley’s election in 1966, the city doubled in area by annexing 100 square miles of county land. During his time as mayor, the city passed its first 1-cent sales tax and established the Port of Catoosa following the passage of a $20, million bond issue to fund it. He was also instrumental in the start of the Metropolitan Tulsa Transit Authority and Tulsa Housing Authority. After leaving city office, he ran in 1972 for Oklahoma’s U.S. House District 1 seat but lost to James R. Jones. His son, Jim Hewgley III served three terms as street commissioner.Jim Hewgley Jr. was named to the Tulsa Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1984.He served on many local boards, including those of the Tulsa Opera, the Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross, Children’s Medical Center, Hillcrest Medical Center, Holland Hall, and Southern Hills Country Club. This oral history interview was recorded May 19, 2009. On this episode, we’re joined by Archie W. Dunham. Archie is chairman emeritus of Chesapeake Energy, the second largest natural gas producer in the United States and the retired chairman of the board of ConocoPhillips. He was instrumental in orchestrating Conoco’s IPO separation from DuPont in 1998, the largest in U.S. history at the time, and in negotiating the merger of equals between Conoco Inc. and Phillips in 2001 which created the third largest energy company in America and the fifth largest in the world. In 1998, Dunham was recognized by the World Affairs Council as Houston’s International Citizen of the Year and inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. The most meaningful award he has ever received was being named Houston’s Father of the Year in 1998. In addition to giving extravagantly to other worthy causes and organizations, the Dunhams have also been tremendously generous to Houston Baptist University which has resulted in various landmarks within the campus named in their honor that attest to their strong Christian faith and values, including the Dunham College of Business, Dunham Field, the Linda and Archie Dunham Theater and the Dunham Bible Museum. It’s safe to say that the Christianity in Business Podcast may not exist if it wasn’t for Archie and Linda Dunham. Christianity in Business is the show that helps Christian business leaders to integrate biblical values into business. | Entrepreneurship | Marketing | Nonprofit | Church | Author | Startups | Marketplace | Ministry | Business as Mission | Faith and Work | Faith | Success | Leadership | www.ChristianityInBusiness.com
