Rex Sexton and I talk about Alfred the Great was King from 871 to 899 and is the only English monarch ever given the title “the Great.” He ruled during one of the most dangerous periods in early English history, when Viking (Danish) armies were conquering much of Anglo-Saxon England. He launched the greatest literary Renaissance that Anglo-Saxon England ever knew.  He was a seasoned warrior, a scholar, a poet, a lawgiver, an architect of towns and ships, and a zealous Christian.   Rex and I talk about lessons we could learn about us and our heritage from him.

Among the many cool characters from the Viking Age that are brought to life in Assassin's Creed Valhalla is Alfred the Great. Before his military success against the vikings, Alfred also boasts one of the all-time great comeback stories. In January 878 all looked lost: Alfred was hiding in marshlands, his army defeated and scattered, and the Vikings controlled his kingdom. The key event that almost saw the end of Anglo-Saxon England was the Battle of Chippenham.Assassin's Creed Valhalla recreates the battle and puts players in the heart of combat. But what do we really know about the battle? How big was a viking army? What did the Anglo-Saxons count as a 'real' battle? To help answer these questions, Matt Lewis is joined by Professor Ryan Lavelle from the University of Winchester. In addition to writing Alfred's Wars: Sources and Interpretations of Anglo-Saxon Warfare in the Viking Age, he consulted on Assassin's Creed Valhalla.Echoes of History is a Ubisoft podcast, brought to you by History Hit. The Great Heathen Army—an alliance of Viking warriors—had already devastated Northumbria and East Anglia, and now turned its full fury toward the last unconquered Anglo-Saxon kingdom. But Ed also writes book and in particular a series of short introductions to various periods of English history. If (like me) you sometimes find you need a good overview of something before diving into the detail these books are an absolute godsend. We talked about the period from when the Romans left Britain in the early 400's to the time of Alfred the Great. It was thoroughly entertaining to listen to Ed though it sounds as if the people living through these times had a lot less fun. His book is called Saxons vs Vikings: Alfred the Great and England in the Dark Ages. It is a great introduction to the period. (And ideal for fans of Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom!)

Welcome listeners to the debut episode of Season 2 of Dawn of an Era of Well-Being: The Podcast. On September 8 of 2022, Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, passed away peacefully at her residence of Balmoral Castle, thus concluding the longest reign of any British Monarch, and one of the most elongated terms of any leader known to history. The funeral was a tremendous spectacle as British subjects poured to the streets while an estimated 4.1 billion people around the world tuned in to the televised ceremony, an astounding number by any stretch pf the imagination. The French President Emmanuel Macron summed it up in his statement to the people of Britain, “To you, she was your Queen. To us, she was The Queen.” Queen to the World, the death of Queen Elizabeth was very much a global event. In today's episode of Dawn of an Era of Well-Being our special guests, Anne Baring and Jude Currivan, share their reflections on Elizabeth's legacy in a candid and at times quite emotional discussion. We understand of course that the history of the British Empire is deeply problematic in many respects, but our focus here is on the single figure of Elizabeth and her contribution to a tradition that has found significance at a time when the Empire's twilight has already passed. We will primarily discuss Elizabeth as the embodiment of an archetype, a highly performative role that she used to unify and inspire people across the world with a sense of duty and service to a higher purpose. It was a performance that lasted over seventy years and witnessed the arrivals and departures of fifteen Prime Ministers, and it is not one that will be repeated any time soon, if ever.

Biker GangsWhether myth or reality, Robin Hood or Jesse James, the truth behind Outlaws is often darker and more bleak than we suppose.  There was a great deal of bloodshed beyond the songs and fictional gun smoke.  John Brown was not averse to killing people in cold blood.  The bushranger, Ned Kelly, was little more than a robber and a murderer.  As for Jesse James, he was a Confederate guerrilla and known participant in the massacre of unarmed Union soldiers.  Later still, Bonnie and Clyde died in a hail of gunfire down in Louisiana, having had an infamous career of brutal robberies and car jackings.  Free spirits they might have been, but often it was a tale of trial and woe, betrayal and slaughter.  They were not nice people.  Like pirates and highwaymen, they join our trio of episodes on Banditry through the centuries.  They created hell and were certainly no angels. So it goes,Tom Assheton and James Jackson All episodes available on Amazon Podcast  Reading: The Trial of John Brown from Flashman and the Angel of the Lord by George MacDonald FraserClips: John Brown's Body and The Outlaw Josey Wales - The Malpaso CompanyReference:  Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy See also:YouTube: BloodyViolentHistoryhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodyviolenthistory/https://www.jamesjacksonbooks.comhttps://www.tomtom.co.uk If you enjoy the podcast, would you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes, Spotify or Google Podcast App? Michael Wood: Alfred the Great and the Vikings (878)

Travels Through Time

This week we are travelling back to the ninth century to witness one of the major turning points in English history. Winston Churchill regularly tops ‘the greatest Briton of all time' charts, but his own vote for this accolade apparently went to the man we are going to discuss today. Alfred 'the Great' is the only English monarch to enjoy such an admiring epithet, his brother Athelstan is remembered as ‘the Unready' (although this meant poorly advised rather than unprepared), William I is either ‘the conqueror' or ‘the bastard' depending on your point of view – no other monarch's reputation has survived with a rosy glow. Our time travel today in the company of the world-renowned historian Michael Wood reveals exactly why Alfred is so well thought of. He takes us back to 878, a pivotal year in our history when, against all the odds, the Viking invaders were defeated, pushed out of Alfred's kingdom of Wessex and the geopolitics were set for the following centuries. Michael Wood's In Search of the Dark Ages: a History of Anglo-Saxon England 40th anniversary edition, is newly published by BBC Books. As ever, for more about this episode, head over to our website: www.tttpodcast.com Show notes Scene One: March 23rd Easter at Athelney, after Alfred's desperate guerrilla war in the Somerset marshes. Scene Two: 9th May, the Battle of Edington, Alfred defeats the Viking forces against all odds. Scene Three: 26th June Treaty at Wedmore which changed the course of the Viking wars and resulted in their leader, Guthrum converting to Christianity with Alfred as his godfather. Memento: Alfred's little commonplace book that he carried around with him, and perhaps had with him in the marshes.
