“Alicia Maree Malone is a Film Reporter, TV Host, Producer, Writer, Editor, and all around film geek. She developed her taste for film at a young age, spending many a heady Friday night pajama-clad at the video store, picking out her 7 films for 7 days for $7. Bargain! While at school she created a Film Club, electing herself President. Eventually the School Principal asked her not to get up in assembly to talk about movies anymore. The day after graduating high school, Alicia moved to Sydney and got a job at a video store, where she took to advising customers of the correct movie choices, whether it was asked for or not. Soon, she scored a position at the TV station Channel Seven, where she stayed for 6 years in a variety of production roles. After responding to an ad for a job at cable TV station Movie Network Channels, Alicia took up a role as host, producer and editor. There she created and fronted several movie-related shows, including Movie Juice and Premiere, and hosted live red carpet events for the AFI Awards and Tropfest Short Film Festival. Alicia was also seen weekly on the national breakfast show The Morning Show as their movie expert, was heard talking about films on radio station Triple M, and her written reviews were published in Filmink Magazine. In late 2010 Alicia quit everything, packed two suitcases and moved to Hollywood to chase her dreams in the film capital of the world….” Bio continued on https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4435291/bio You can find Alicia's Amazon page here to shop her books: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B001K83468 WHO ARE WE? XXII.Julian Fellowes' new series on HBO "The Gilded Age" fascinated viewers with its complex plotlines and endlessly entertaining characters, some of whom were based on actual historical figures.  The show depicted the enormity of the age in so many of its social, political and cultural layers.  It also raised so many new insights and new viewpoints on this (not always glittering) age.  Tom Meyers of The Bowery Boys joins me for this show to take an even deeper look at the Gilded Age -- both the historical period and the HBO TV show. Tom was co-host along with TCM's Alicia Malone of HBO's "Official Gilded Age Podcast" and he had the unique opportunity to delve further into the history behind what we saw on screen and hear insights from members of the cast and creative team.  Join us for a unique look behind the glitter and the gold!

Welcome to our inaugural TV Corner episode! If you haven't yet watched The Gilded Age series on HBO Max, this episode will provide really helpful historical context, and if you have watched it, it'll definitely give more depth to the characters and narratives. Andrew is joined with a special co-host to help him with this deep dive, his real estate agent, Danielle Nero. When Andrew found out that Danielle has a deep passion for Gilded Age architecture and history, and renovated both an 1800's brownstone and a 1920's colonial home, he knew that she needed to join him for this episode. We start by asking why Julian Fellowes would choose the Gilded Age as a historical period to focus on during such difficult times in America (the pandemic and social/racial/gender inequality)? Danielle explains the difference between Old and New Money both on Long Island and in Manhattan, and we imagine what it must have been like to be part of one of these wealthy families (so a little playacting on our end). Before we hit the record button, we had just returned from the Nassau County Museum of Art and met Dr. Charles Riley, the director, who gave us a tour of the Frick mansion and the Impressionism art exhibit. Thanks Charlie! Our second part will be filmed at the Nassau County Museum of Art which used to be one of the Frick family's Gilded Age mansions. We can't wait to bring you this episode later this summer. We will continue discussing how gender and sexuality were viewed during the Gilded Age, and we'll spend a lot of time reflecting on why the Gilded Age is so relevant in our current moment. Traveling in and around the country looks a lot different today than it did yesterday. Following a Florida federal judge's ruling striking down the federal transportation mask mandate, airlines including Southwest, American Delta, United and others are making masking optional on domestic flights. Next, 25 years after the present Mission Bay drive bridge was described as “functionally deficient and obsolete” a replacement bridge is just months away from completion. After, Escondido's historic downtown is undergoing a makeover that could make it the next Little Italy-like scene. Then, a Chula Vista outreach group is establishing a street medicine team to serve the health needs of unhoused South Bay residents. Then, KPBS arts reporter Beth Accomando previews this weekend's Turner Classic Movies film festival with host Alicia Malone.

Joining Erik for this installment is Turner Classic Movies host Alicia Malone, author of the newly released book Girls on Film: Lessons From a Life of Watching Women in Movies. Erik and Alicia examine how Singin' in the Rain remains a bona fide classic 70 years later, why it still matters, its cultural impact and legacy, and what we can learn from all this genius singing and dancing today.
