EP 72 Pt. 2 of 2: Menopause can feel like a midlife cluster, especially if you're trying to navigate it on your own. Are you wondering about the best way to stay in shape during midlife and menopause? Do you find yourself reaching for the sugar-filled treat to satisfy midlife cravings? Ready to learn exactly how much protein you should be eating? And the key to really preventing chronic illness in midlife? Menopause and midlife are not excuses for us to suffer from stubborn weight and inflammation…get ready to learn everything you need to know about taking control of your midlife health.  Welcome back to part two of my discussion with “menopause normalizer and problem solver”, Dr. Mary Claire Haver. In this episode, we discuss the third pillar of The Galveston Diet, protein, how the heck to calculate how much you need in midlife, and the importance of exercise, which I learned isn't just about toning the midlife muffin top. We wrap up part 2 by going over key measurements for midlife body composition, ratios of muscle-to-fat, and how those ratios can give you crucial information about your health. And remember if you haven't heard part 1 then go listen to that first! Some Highlights:  What type of exercise should I be incorporating in midlife? What's Omega three and how do I get more of it? How do I know if I'm getting enough protein? Do yourself a favor and incorporate avocado in your daily snack list because half an avocado a day contains half the daily minimum fiber for a midlife woman.  What is visceral fat and why is it important? Looking forward to connecting with you! Here are some ways to connect with me! In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly chats with Dr. Mary Claire Haver, a board-certified OB/GYN and Certified Culinary Medicine specialist. As the creator of the nutrition program, The Galveston Diet, and author of the book by the same name, Dr. Haver has made it her mission to help women navigate the challenges of aging with a comprehensive approach to nutrition and wellness. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Haver is also a wife, mother, and successful entrepreneur. Dr. Haver's journey began when she noticed her patients complaining about weight gain during menopause, despite following traditional weight loss advice of eating less and exercising more. As a physician, she quickly realized there were gaps in her training, specifically with regard to nutrition. Motivated by her own and her patients' struggles with weight gain during menopause, Dr. Haver delved into the world of nutrition, conducting her own research and pursuing certification in culinary medicine at Tulane University to better serve their needs. Molly and Dr. Haver discuss the importance of tailoring nutrition plans to the individual, focusing on non-scale measures such as muscle mass and subcutaneous fat. Dr. Haver also provides insights on how to manage chronic inflammation, how to incorporate micronutrients and supplements into one's diet, and other issues specific to women experiencing menopause. Dr. Haver's unique approach to nutrition and wellness is rooted in a focus on serving others and helping her patients age optimally. Whether you're looking for advice on managing menopause or seeking a more holistic approach to nutrition and wellness, you won't want to miss this fascinating conversation with Dr. Mary Claire Haver. They were together until his death in 1996. Currently, Patricia serves as Trustee of The Gene Kelly Image Trust and is the President and Creative Director of The Gene Kelly Legacy, Inc.  She lives in Los Angeles where she is completing a book about her late husband. As part of this work, she is preserving and cataloging The Gene Kelly Archives — an extensive collections of letters, manuscripts, photographs, scripts, interviews, essays, poems, holograph notes, and memorabilia that will eventually be the basis of additional publications and, ultimately, the core of an innovative, virtual Gene Kelly “experience.” Mrs. Kelly has recorded commentary for the DVDs of An American in Paris, The Pirate, Words and Music, Xanadu, and Hello, Dolly!, and is frequently called upon to introduce Gene's films in theaters and at festivals, including two years at the TCM Classic Film Festival. She has been interviewed extensively on TCM and has represented her husband's legacy on numerous PBS specials and pledge drives and on the popular television shows So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With the Stars.  She regularly hosts scores of dancers and other artists from around the world at her home, sharing insights about the life and work of her late husband through an intimate tour of The Gene Kelly Archives. Patricia has appeared in An Evening with Mrs. Gene Kelly in several cities around the world and her one-woman tribute — Gene Kelly: The Legacy, An Evening with Patricia Ward Kelly — sold out two nights at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on the occasion of Kelly's centenary in 2012 and has been touring across the United States and abroad the past four years, with sold-out performances at Lincoln Center, The Pasadena Playhouse, Laguna Playhouse, the Sedona Film Festival, and many, many more. How women have been told be afraid of hormone replacement therapy based on one study years ago despite more research showing it's not true. The danger of visceral fat and how it differs from subcutaneous fat. And how to reduce belly fat (it is possible) She recommends a diet that includes the proper amount of fiber, reducing inflammation, adequate protein, resistance training + cardio, good sleep, and stress reduction. Today on The Girlfriend Doctor, I am joined by Dr.Mary Claire Haver, founder of the Galveston diet! Dr. Haver is helping you master your hormones so you can confidently step into the second spring of your life. Menopause is often viewed as a disease because so many women are suffering from imbalanced hormones and poor diets that are causing the symptoms associated with menopause.  Although weight loss is a beneficial side effect, The Galveston diet is not focused on weight management but on reducing inflammation. Every woman is unique but by focusing on lowering inflammation and balancing your hormones, you can reclaim your health at any age. In this episode, Dr. Haver teaches you how you can add intermittent fasting to your menopause tool kit, to help you combat inflammation and balance your hormones. Many doctors are still recommending that ovaries should be removed after menopause to avoid ovarian cancer but studies have revealed that even throughout menopause, your ovaries are always producing essential hormones needed for optimal health. With the Galvestone diet you can help restore  your hormonal balance and avoid unnecessary suffering to make your second spring the best years of your life.    KEY TAKEAWAYS [5:30] Working out more and eating less is not a viable weight loss plan for menopausal women [7:30] Abdomen weight gain is the most common weight gain in menopausal women [9:30] Menopause causes a brain function decrease of 20% since the brain is starving for fuel [10:30] Ovarian suppression from birth control can mask a womans menopausal symptoms [14:30] Menopause like puberty is not a disease state and neither should be suppressed [16:55] Intermittent fasting keeps glucose stable and lowers inflammation if it is done correctly [18:28] Basic inflammatory nutrition is the second pillar of the galveston diet  [20:00] Avoid packaged foods that have any preservatives because these are never healthy [22:00] Dairy is optional, unless you have lactose intolerant dairy is a safe addition to your diet  [23:00] In 2002 the Women's health initiative trial wrongfully vilified all hormonal therapies  [25:00] We don't exercise to get thin, it  serves to build muscles and build healthy bones [25:30] Ovaries age faster than any other organ in a woman's body [28:30] Your ovaries are still producing hormones after menopause and should not be removed HOW TO CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST Galvestondiet.com IG: @MaryClaire   MEMORABLE QUOTES “I got off and was immediately menopausal, so that the birth control pill was giving me estrogen and progesterone and masking my menopausal symptoms.” [10:30]  “I'm getting very little feedback about weight loss. That's not our focus. And of course, we talk about supplementation. It's like a tackle box and everything is important.”Although Dr. Haver's career included taking care of women at all life stages, she didn't expect to experience the shocks of her own menopause. So, she went looking for answers and took action along the way. She changed the entire focus of her medical practice to menopause. She also channeled the power of social media to provide menopause education and reaches more than 2 million on her TikTok channel alone. Her new book, “The Galveston Diet: The Doctor-Developed, Patient-Proven Plan to Burn Fat and Tame Your Hormonal Symptoms," lays out three specific action areas: intermittent fasting, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and fuel refocus.Menopause is having a moment. In 2018, Robert produced and directed another story of friendship, Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes which won the Critics Choice Award in 2020, the same year it debuted on HBO.  Robert co-wrote the film with Cavett, chronicling Muhammad Ali's life and career through the lens of his many interviews with Cavett and the documentary is available to stream on HBO Max and on DVD. He has also produced critically acclaimed television documentaries Dick Cavett's Watergate and Dick Cavett's Vietnam for PBS, produced numerous archival DVD and CD releases, including five acclaimed DVD sets of The Dick Cavett Show, two of You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx and two of Bing Crosby: The Television Specials.    Robert manages the archive of The Dick Cavett Show and is the curator of several important entertainment archives, including those of the estates of Bing Crosby, the Marx Brothers, and Danny Kaye. He also serves on the Board of Directors for The Al Hirschfeld Foundation and Marx Brothers Incorporated, and has helmed countless projects, shows, films, radio and CD releases, including the launch of the Film Preservation Society's silent film restoration series on Blu-ray with the 1925 film Too Many Kisses, which features Harpo Marx.  Robert is also the author of Four of the Three Musketeers: The Marx Brothers on Stage now available in paperback, and the editor of Groucho Marx and Other Short Stories and Tall Tales, an anthology of the comedian's lost writings. Robert's most recent book is entitled Speaking of Harpo, co-authored with the late Susan Fleming Marx, Harpo's widow.  Susan appeared in three Broadway shows and twenty-eight films before she turned her back on a show business career she never really enjoyed or wanted. The role of her lifetime came when she married Harpo Marx in 1936. Together, they raised four adopted children and enjoyed one of Hollywood's happiest and most successful unions. But their twenty-year age difference made Susan a young widow in 1964.   Speaking of Harpo is Susan's account of her more than thirty-year adventure with Harpo including encounters with people like Charlie Chaplin, William Randolph Hearst, Salvador Dalí, Joan Crawford, Howard Hughes, Helen Keller, Bugsy Siegel, Sam Goldwyn, Ginger Rogers, and of course, the Marx Brothers. The book provides an inside look at the family and pulls no punches when discussing her brothers-in-law, who weren't always her favorite comedians.   The book was released in July 2022 and would make an excellent gift for that Marx Brother's fan or golden age film buff on your list. Continuo a reflexão neste vídeo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emUQNzVlFus Gostou? Continuo a reflexão neste vídeo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emUQNzVlFus Gostou? Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a board-certified OB-GYN who made a leap from her well-established medical practice to a solo, self-funded entrepreneur at 49. Throughout the years, Dr. Haver encountered frustrated women in midlife grappling with weight gain despite no changes in their routine. She counseled them to "eat less, work out more." It wasn't until menopause contributed to her battle with weight gain that she realized it wasn't working. With the goal of empowering and educating women, Dr. Haver took a deep dive into the science of menopause, aging, and inflammation beyond what she was taught in school and residency. She emerged with an evidence-based program so women could wisely invest in their most undervalued asset, their health. Can you say “One of the first of two female graduates of the US Army Ranger School and Apache attack helicopter pilot?” Meet this week's Team Never Quit guest, Shaye Haver. From being a cross country runner and soccer player in high school, to Army brat, to following in her dad's footsteps as an Apache helicopter pilot, Shaye and Marcus share an engaging conversation about her influences and accomplishments. In 2016, Shaye and Kristen Griest, who also graduated from the US Army Ranger School were ranked 34th on Fortune magazine's list of the World's Greatest Leaders. In this episode you will hear: I grew up as an Army brat which put me in an environment of serving and sacrifice. My dad always said, “Go do something better than me.” ROTC was the beginning of my understanding that the military was about opportunity. You can make it what you want it to be. Good, better, best – Never let it rest, until your good is better, and your better best. I absolutely don't take no for an answer – especially for myself. I did not go to West Point because of my intellectual prowess. I went on my leadership and physical fitness abilities. Ranger School reminded me that the mission is about the people to the left and right of you. Crisis provides opportunity. The tactic for success I use is to visualize success. The first day one, there was 19 of us; the second day 1, there were 8 of us; the third day one, there were 3 of us. I have had my tab ripped off my shoulder two times. Once by another Ranger. I choose to walk in the responsibility of bearing this thing that I have earned for the duration of my life. You can let it weigh you down, or you can let it inspire you. There's not a quitting bone in my body. The warrior culture is not just for men. Heroes come in the most unlikely boxes. They're all around us and everybody has a story.
