I was honored to chat with Bruce Molsky on the Fiddle Studio Podcast this month. Bruce has a new album out with Darol Anger called Lockdown Breakdown. We talk about getting into Old-Time and sticking with it over the years, trying to sound like your heroes, picking up new tunes, the Berklee American Roots music department, and what he listens for in old recordings. Bruce breaks down singing and fiddling at the same time and how to develop that slippery skill. We hear a track from the new album, Can I Change My Mind.Bruce Molsky has been playing and studying Old-Time music for 50 years, and for much of that time teaching as well. He famously learned fiddle and banjo from folks down in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina in the 70s, including Tommy Jarrell among others. He's been performing and collaborating ever since, has over dozen great albums to check out, and he teaches Old-Time music at the Berklee School of Music and online at Peghead Nation. You can see Bruce on the BBC TV “Transatlantic Sessions” with Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas, and on “David Holt's State of Music” on PBS. He stays active touring and recording with longtime collaborators Darol Anger, Tony Trischka and Mountain Drifters' Allison de Groot. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Jared Ulmer emailed: "Hi mark, long time listener and big fan here. I had a quandary I was curious if you had any insight on. I've recently started collecting vinyl, however my Celtic record collection is much smaller than I like. It seems like alot of older artists are out of print and newer artists distribute mostly digitally. Are you aware of any resources to find groups, perhaps ones featured on your podcast that offer music in this format?" David Turner replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Hello Marc, Thank you so much for your podcast which has been a constant companion these past few months. It’s very weird listening to pre Covid episodes with you expressing all the freedom of looking ahead with anticipation! Ah weill . Now favourites could be a long list! However, I still get prickles remembering the immense, involuntary roar at the conclusion of a concert by The Battlefield Band in Port Fairy in 1991, a roar not generated in the vocal chords, but deep from the core, as Big Iain and Wee John finally brought their frenzied duet to a close, the entire tent vibrating and humming with exhilaration. Tears in my eyes again! Yes, what a band, so my fave Scottish band. Honorary mentions to Dick Gaughan, Aly Bain and Dougie McLain. To Ireland, and Mary Black. Now this choice could well be clouded by my intense infatuation, but her Song for Ireland stops me in my tracks every time. Andy Irvine is also a hero. Keep up the good work Marc, we need good people like you! Warm regards. David” Bill Wall emailed a photo: "Cead Mille Failte. (I probably misspelled that) I'd been meaning to subscribe for a while, but when I heard a few people drop off I knew I needed to step up. The music of your podcast stirs up many emotions in me. I have been sober for 5 years now, and I listen to your podcast driving to one of my favorite 12-step meetings about 40 minutes away from my house. For all of the Wild Roving I've done, with Celtic music in the background, it's great to hear the music on the way to centering myself. The drive is from my stereotypically suburban environment into a wooded canyon where we meet at a monastery. The monastery has green hills behind it for a beautiful hike, which reminds me of my time in Ireland. Since I know you like pictures, I thought I'd include these two. Thank you for all you do to keep bringing the happy war songs and sad love songs."
Recorded on March 6th, 2019. We are star struck today with our guest Joe Newberry who is a North Carolina transplant and bit of a celebrity in songwriting circles. His achievements musically are nothing short of impressive. In 2013, Joe shared co-writing honors with Eric Gibson for the IBMA Song of the Year, “They Called It Music.” Joe was often a frequent guest on Garrison Keillor A Prairie Home Companion (now called Live from Here), and was recently featured on the Transatlantic Sessions tour in the United Kingdom with fiddler Aly Bain and Dobro master Jerry Douglas. We are honored to have him here at Neville's Quarter. Joe will be playing his tunes: "The Marks", "The Darker the Night, the Better I See", and " Singing As We Rise".We will be playing “Bluegrass On My Mind” and “Chasing Crickets”Hosted by Lex Headley and Brian Moyer.
This episode, the last in Series One, features Ethel Hofman, author of Mackerel at Midnight: Growing up Jewish in the Shetland Isles (Revised edition Mercat Press, Edinburgh, 2006), the Shetland Fiddlers Society, and young Shetland fiddler Amber Thompson. I set myself a challenge - to make a podcast during a trip to Shetland and Orkney rather than go back to recordings from last year like my last 6 podcasts - and I've done it! My podcast series subtitle is "Fascinating Conversations and Traditional Music". There's very seldom a week goes by when I don't come into contact with some traditional music. But last week in Shetland I was particularly lucky to find some AMAZING musc - there was a Shetland Showcase in the community centre, featuring the long-established Shetland Fiddlers Society (established in 1960 by Aly Bain), and a fabulous young fiddler, Amber Thompson - to hear her play you'd never believe she's only twelve. And I LOVE her teacher Eunice Henderson's piano accompaniment that's so typical of Shetland fiddling, a style I first heard with Violet Tulloch accompanying Aly Bain on the 1978 Topic "Shetland Folk Fiddling" record. Playlist Amber Thompson (Fiddle) Eunice Henderson (Piano) Gig for Frances by Debbie Scott/Simon Thoumire's jig by John McCusker [Amber's favourite jig of all time!]/Izzy's Jig by Margaret Scollay [Eunice's favourite] The Calgary Fiddler's Welcome to Shetland by Andrew Gifford/52 weeks of fiddle - written for Amber by Steven Smith to commemorate her year-long Shetland fiddle project - find it on youtube here/Cape Breton visit to Shetland (also known as "Welcome to the Cape Breton Fiddlers") by Willie Hunter.* The Shetland Fiddlers Society Da Ferry Reel/Lay Dee at Dee Acknowledgements Thanks to BBC Radio Shetland and David Gardner, to Shetland Library and Archives and Marghie West, and to the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities (SCoJeC) who sponsored the tour. Production notes Fiona's podcast no 7: Growing Up Jewish on Shetland - was recorded in Lerwick, Shetland on 12th - 14th August 2019, and mixed August 20th - 22nd 2019 in London, where I'm staying while I'm at Klezfest, a week long Klezmer festival which this year is directed by Alan Bern (interviewed on Fiona's Travels Podcast episode 2!). This is the last one in the first series of Fiona's Travels Podcasts. Please subscribe to hear about the next series. And if you're listening on Apple Podcasts please leave us a review! *when you've finished listening to this podcast, you can watch the late Willie Hunter himself playing his Cape Breton Visit to Shetland tune, accompanied by Violet Tulloch, here.

Sharing a tune and some food together this St. Andrews Day, Scottish traditional music legend and curry fanatic Phil Cunningham joins Sumayya Usmani and Ghillie Basan on the Curry Club to indulge himself in his lifelong obsession with curry. On the road in the early days of Silly Wizard the only places still open to get food after a gig were the curry houses of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. Before long the band had become connoisseurs of the takeaway menu. In the years that followed Phil and good pal Aly Bain started making their own curries, roasting their own spices and using each other as guinea pigs for their latest curry experiments in the kitchen. While they have both become global legends of the Scottish music scene, within the traditional music world, Phil is now a curry king. He describes his love to Sumayya and Ghillie while getting some top tips for his own kitchen. To keep our stomachs full for St. Andrews Day celebrations, Sumayya and Phil make a Scottish take on shalgham ghost together, a spicy version of venison stovies. Meanwhile, Ghillie explores a very Scottish spice, juniper.

Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham, who will embark on their 20th touring year together in 2007 are best summed up in the words of Mike Russell, who wrote in The Glasgow Herald "They are simply the best traditional musicians you are ever likely to hear" The Savoy Doucet Cajun Band Marc and Ann Savoy, along with Michael Doucet create and interpret authentic old-time Cajun music, from popular dancehall tunes to soulful ballads, drawing upon each member's rich historical connection to their native southern Louisiana. Catching this expert, unpretentious trio is about the closest most of us will ever get to hearing an authentic Cajun bash on a screened-in bayou porch. Bengan Janson & Bjorn Stabi Bjorn Stabi is without doubt a legend among folk music fiddlers in Sweden and was probably the first traditional Swedish fiddler to perform in the United States. Bengan Janson is one of Sweden's greatest virtuosi on the accordion. With his evident ability to to embrace all musical styles he has collaborated with Björn Ståbi over the last ten years together developing a genuine folk music style of their own.
