Deep in the Rockies in Alberta, Canada, is a small unassuming hut that - unknown to many - houses a teahouse that has been serving hikers since 1904. In the heat of high summer the cabin swarms with hikers in search of a brew. Early or late in the season, though, it's possible to bag the best view in the house on the porch overlooking Lake Agnes before choosing from the impressive menu of loose-leaf teas in relative tranquillity.Joanna Magee owns the teahouse and has to get up at 4.30am to bake the day's supply of bread on an old propane army stove (there's no electric in the cabin). Stocking up on supplies are even more challenging - with all dry goods being helicoptered in once a year and members of staff having to hike into Lake Louise to pick up fresh produce and hike all the rubbish back out. Recorded live at Countrystride's end of summer gathering at Kelsick Grammar, we learn about the ancient practice – still banned in this country – of pilgrimage, and hear about the great emptiness Phoebe felt on a secular walk along the Camino de Santiago. In a wide-ranging conversation centred around Phoebe's book Wayfarer: Love, loss and life on Britain's ancient paths, we consider what role walking plays in healing trauma; why slow ways have increasing appeal in a busy world; and the deep-level connections that get forged when we follow in the footsteps of our ancestors. Never straying far from the Lake District, Phoebe reveals her favourite fells and wild camp locations; talks about drying knickers on a Kendal stove; and recalls the Christmas she spent in a gale atop Scafell Pike. Arriving at our quickfire questions. we consider why National Parks are visited by so few young people; we learn why Phoebe's Lakeland hero is Mabel Barker... and we try (and fail) to get Phoebe to stop talking about Grasmere gingerbread. Unicorns. Not usually the kind of mythical thing you'd think a travel writer would be on assignment to find.  Yet in the Canadian Arctic of the territory of Nunavut, on Baffin Island, a sea creature who inspired these fabled creatures lingers beneath the waves. We're talking the narwhal - a small whale that sports a twisted ivory tusk that to this day still baffles scientists. Accompanied by her Inuit guides Phoebe battles whiteouts and icy seas on a mission to find these marina mammals. Along the way she climbs icebergs, learns how to track polar bears and is privileged to hear, first hand, the indigenous legends of the creation of the first narwhal. Will she find one? There's only one way to find out... 5x15 is delighted to announce the second event is our new events partnership with Rathbones, in collaboration with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on the theme of Regeneration. No discussion about climate change and biodiversity loss is complete without acknowledging the importance of children, adolescents and young adults. While activists look to involve and encourage new generations, many young people are themselves leading the way as instigators of change, faced with the urgency of the global crises. For this intergenerational conversation, we invite a range of speakers to share their perspectives, from those closely working with young people to the campaigners, naturalists and writers who inspire hope for a better future. Tori Tsui (she/they) is a climate justice organiser and writer from Hong Kong now based in Bristol. Her work focuses on the intersections between (environ)mental health and climate change, culminating in her debut book, It's Not Just You. She is an organiser with Unite for Climate Action, EarthPercent, Climate Live and Stop Rosebank. Dwayne Fields is a presenter, explorer, naturalist, and all-round adventurer. Dwayne is an inspiring advocate for encouraging people to get outdoors and explore the world around them. Following a life-threatening incident in his younger years, Dwayne developed a passion to break the norm and expectations, reconnecting himself with his early experiences of the outdoors in wild Jamaica. He went on to become the first black Briton to walk over 400 nautical miles to the magnetic North Pole and has lived a life of incredible adventure and exploration thereafter, whilst simultaneously encouraging others to do the same. In 2018 he formed Team #WeTwo with his teammate Phoebe Smith and launched the #WeTwo Foundation, with the aim to use responsible adventuring as a force for good. Claire Howard (they/them) is a qualified teacher with over 15 years' experience in education and youth work. They are particularly interested in the power of story- telling to enact change, and how to bridge the ‘adolescent dip' in nature connection amongst young people growing up in urban environments. They now co-ordinate the youth programme at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which reaches over 200 young people each year. Kew's youth programme prioritises long- term, meaningful engagement with the young people it serves, and is designed to amplify youth voice through projects that explore the fundamental question of why plants and fungi matter. In their spare time they also work as a mountain leader, developing young people's confidence, skills and sense of belonging in the outdoors. Phoebe Smith is an adventurer, presenter, broadcaster, author, photographer, speaker and podcast host. In 2018 she formed Team #WeTwo with her teammate Dwayne Fields and launched the #WeTwo Foundation, with the aim to use responsible adventuring as a force for good. The Foundation's aim is to inspire the next generation. They run an expedition each year, taking with them a group of underprivileged young people to key destinations all over the planet. On each expedition, they will take part in citizen science: helping with vital research and adding experience to their own CV. Pre-trip they will be 'paying it forward' by participating in environmental, conservation, and youth initiatives in their local communities. Phoebe is also the author of 10 books including the bestselling Extreme Sleeps: Adventures of a Wild Camper. We see it as our responsibility to invest for everyone's tomorrow. That means doing the right thing for our clients and for others too. Keeping the future in mind when we make decisions today. Looking beyond the short term for the most sustainable outcome. This is how we build enduring value for our clients, make a wider contribution to society and create a lasting legacy. Celtic goddess? Catholic Saint? Or master beer brewer? February 1st marks St Brigid's Day – as well as the pagan festival of Imbolc, which elebrates the coming of spring, which the Irish Government have declared to be a public holiday. But who was the Brigid behind Ireland's female patron saint? The stories are many - from the igniter of an eternal flame, protector of the earth, the environment and animals; to the girl who gave away her father's sword to the poor so that they could sell it for food; and the saint who manage to claim The Curragh lands under her mythical cloak . And did we mention the woman who brewed enough beer to satiate her entire parish of 18 churches in a single pot?Fascinated by this indisputable Wander Woman, adventurer Phoebe Smith heads to Kildare in Ireland (just a 30 minute train ride from Dublin), in association with Tourism Ireland, to go on the St Brigid Trail in a mission to find out who she really was. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit public.substack.comYesterday, Public reported on the new House Judiciary Commiteee report on how the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has been engaged in an effort with big tech companies to censor American citizens. The headline finding was that the people involved knew that what they were doing was wrong. “It's only a matter of time,” wrote Suzanne Spaulding, a former assistant general counsel for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in an email to a colleague, “before someone realizes we exist and starts asking about our work.” And, noted the report, CISA scrubbed from its web site any mention of its focus on domestic “misinformation,” after being exposed. One person who knew that what CISA, an agency within the US Department of Homeland Security, was doing was wrong, before almost everybody else in the world, was investigative journalist Lee Fang, who broke the first big story of US government censorship on October 31, 2022 for The Intercept. Some of what was in the House report had been covered before, including by Fang, which the report noted. But much of it was new, including the Spaulding email. Fang's ground-breaking reporting makes him one of the best investigative journalists working in the U.S. right now. Fang discovers scoops others overlook, including the fact that the Biden administration tried to block the release of evidence showing its censorship, that MSNBC's Mehdi Hasan plagarized a column on spanking, and that the FBI helps the Ukranian government censor information it doesn't like on Facebook. Be sure to subscribe to his Substack to get his stories as soon as they are published. Now, in an interview with Public's Phoebe Smith, Fang warns that the government is seeking new excuses to censor Americans. “Even as the threat of Islamic terrorism from Al-Qaeda or ISIS has radically waned,” he explains, the military “needs to justify its existence. So it's searching for new threats and new fears to tap into.”A few hours before Fang's conversation with Smith, he published another scoop, this time exposing the ties between the late pedophile and sex trafficker, Jeffrey Epstein, and Rep. Stacey Plasket, the member of Congress who disparaged Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger as “so-called journalists.”

When you go on holiday, where do you like to stay? Do you like the luxury of a five-star hotel, the convenience of a self-catering apartment or do you prefer the freedom of sleeping under canvas? If you haven't tried the latter, maybe you should join the increasing number of people who are enjoying the simple pleasures of camping. By grabbing your tent, and some additional accessories, it's easy to head off to the countryside and enjoy a night or two under the stars. Many campers are ditching the trappings of their modern, hectic life to do this, encouraged by experts who say a few peaceful nights in the middle of nowhere might be a good way to unwind and improve our sleep patterns and well-being. It is also, of course, a good low-budget holiday option. For the adventurous, wild camping is the ultimate escape from reality. Armed with just some food and a sleeping bag, you're free from rules, away from other people, and able to enjoy the back-to-basics experience. One wild camper, Phoebe Smith, told the BBC: “The act of sleeping when everybody else has gone home – when you notice the wildlife and the stars – is one of the best things in life.”↳对于喜欢冒险的人来说,野外露营是逃离现实的终极方式。 But for those who still want some home comforts, a campsite is a more suitable place to pitch your tent. Here you have facilities such as washrooms, a shop and maybe even a restaurant. And for the most luxurious camping experience, you could try glamping. In the UK, camping – and caravanning – has always been popular. One survey by Visit Britain found around 4.38 million people go camping in Britain every year. More recently, sales of camping gear have jumped as more people have opted for a staycation within the UK due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. One camping retailer, Halfords, reported a surge in demand for products such as stoves, cool boxes and camping chairs. With the addition of inflatable mattresses and pillows, powerful torches and lamps to light up your tent and a better selection of easy-to-cook food, you can almost guarantee a comfortable and enjoyable camping expedition. The only thing you can't guarantee, in the UK at least, is good weather! So maybe it's time to slum it and give camping a try. 词汇表five-star 五星级的self-catering 自理膳食的under canvas (睡)在帐篷里camping 露营tent 帐篷accessories 配件under the stars 在星空下,在野外camper 露营者ditch 摆脱,抛弃the middle of nowhere 荒郊野岭,人迹罕至的地方low-budget 开销少的,低预算的adventurous 勇于冒险的wild camping 野营sleeping bag 睡袋back-to-basics 返璞归真的home comfort 家一般的舒适campsite 度假营地,宿营地pitch 搭(帐篷)facilities 设施glamping 豪华露营,舒适露营caravanning 驾宿营车度假staycation “宅” 度假,居家度假(不出远门,在家附近度假)stove 炉子cool box (用于保存食物、饮料等的)冷箱camping chair 野营椅inflatable mattress 充气床垫torch 手电筒slum it 简朴点,将就点

Prospect Park Productions NZ is proud to present Dark Dunedin: Heaven Looks On, a three-part thriller podcast, with a Gothic Dunedin as its beating heart. As you accompany the protagonist on her journey, you'll discover – or re-discover – nostalgic, historic, and supernatural features of and in the city; the whoosh of Lamson pipes at Penroses Department Store, twinkling stars in the St James theatre, and Kēhua, sprites, and demons dancing under the moonlight in the Town Belt. When a young woman's body is discovered in the Dunedin Town Belt, Louise Hepburn finds herself haunted by both the case and her past. A single woman of middle age, she likes to believe that she is an invisible woman in the Edinburgh of the south. Identified as a potential witness, Louise must now unlock the mystery, following different paths of light that pass through the prism of Ōtepoti, the place of the steep points at the bottom of the world. Produced entirely in Dunedin with a star cast and original music, we invite you to join us for the Dunedin Fringe Festival launch event and/or tune in for the premiere, which will be aired exclusively for Otago residents before the podcast is made available for download worldwide.
