"Everything is in a cycle, and the cycle is dictated by the audience's needs and wants, the studio's needs and wants in terms of the financial bottom line, right? Those two very evolving organisms are always trying to sync into the right gear. So, I don't worry anymore because it always comes back around. You're in this long enough, you just go, all right, this is a cycle, it'll come back around." Stephanie Allain Stephanie Allain of Homegrown Pictures, is a prolific film and television producer dedicated to creating content by and about women and people of color with authentic stories, depictions, and representation. She began her career in the mid-80s as a reader at the elite talent agency, CAA, a job that required reading scripts and books submitted to the agency and providing coverage of the material, often the first barrier for further consideration and development. In her next position at Columbia Pictures, as one of only two African-American readers, a young USC student found his way to her under the guise of interest in a job. Instead that student, John Singleton, pitched her Boyz in the Hood and the rest, as they say, is history. Stephanie worked with John Singleton on five movies: Boyz N the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), Higher Learning (1995), Hustle & Flow (2005) and Black Snake Moan (2006). She also produced Something New, Peeples, Beyond The Lights, Dear White People, French Dirty, Burning Sands, Juanita and Really Love. Her work has been nominated for numerous awards with wins from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Film Independent Spirit Awards, NAACP and others. A few of her projects currently in production include her first documentary Untitled Billy Preston, and a limited series for HBO, Sula by Toni Morrison. Amid a brilliant career, Stephanie became the first black woman to co-produce the Academy Awards (2020) and made history again by becoming the first woman of color to be named as President of the Producer's Guild of America (2022). Brunetto may have run off like the winner of a foot race but he's far from gone from the text. In fact, the next canto of INFERNO, XVI, is in many ways a mirror of Brunetto's canto, XV. Dante and Virgil are still on the embankment, protected from the snowfall of fire, still looking out across the burning sands when three runners peel off and come over to them, attracted to the pilgrim by (of all things) his clothes. Canto XVI of INFERNO is often overlooked, but it may well be one of the most challenging cantos of the entire canticle of pain. Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we meet three guys who will give Dante a history lesson he won't ever forget. Here are the segments of this episode: [00:51] My English translation of this passage. You can find it on my website, markscarbrough.com, under the header "Walking With Dante." [03:13] An brief overview of Canto XVI--and a discussion of why it's so often overlooked. (Because the last lines are seen as so much more dramatic than the opening lines--which is too, too bad.) [05:11] A brief diversion to a discussion of Dante's notion of politics. Our understanding of what the poet means by "politics" will inform our understanding of this difficult canto. [08:07] The opening three lines and the noise of the waterfall ahead. We're getting a view of the landscape ahead of us. It's one of the first times this has happened. Yes, in INFERNO, Canto XI, Virgil gave us a thematic and theological view of the journey ahead. But now we're getting naturalistic details of what's to come far on down the line. The narrative is stretching out. [11:51] Three oiled and naked guys, burned hairless, too, run up to our pilgrim and Virgil. They first notice the pilgrim's clothes. And recognize him as a Florentine. Which tells you a lot about their priorities. [15:33] Virgil stops to tell the pilgrim, Dante, that these men are worthy of courtesy, the prime medieval civic virtue. [18:53] The three Guelphs are described as wrestlers, circling each other. But there's plenty of symbolic import here. It's not just homoerotic. Or maybe not homoerotic at all. Instead, they're going nowhere, round and round, and in each other's footprints. Support this podcast
We're walking with our pilgrim, Dante, along the embankment to a stream, heading down into the depths of the seventh circle of hell where the sins of violence are punished. This levy is the feature Virgil has plumped as the most amazing yet in hell. More amazing still is our pilgrim's response to it: doubt. What's more, the poet behind the pilgrim seems to be at a different game altogether: poetic overabundance. The poet is snowing us with similes, twinning them against each other, perhaps offering us a clue about what we're about to face in this bit of hell. Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as I walk with the poet and pilgrim into one of the strangest cantos of INFERNO. We get psychological insights into the pilgrim and gorgeous bits of poetic excess, all as a set-up to what's ahead, the very heart of a writer's project: fame. Here are the segments of this episode: [01:59] The passage itself in my English translation. If you'd like to follow along, you can find this passage on my website, markscarbrough.com, under the header "Walking With Dante." [03:45] Before we get started, I should confess my assumption about this canto (and the next one, too, while I'm at it). I believe the sinners here are the homosexuals. On down the line, in a future episode, we'll talk about why my assumption may not be the case. [05:07] The first three lines of Canto XV: the geography of margins and the poetry of excess. [12:07] Our first double simile: The Flemish and the Paduans, with their dikes and embankments, in a doubled-up comparison. But even stranger than this redundancy of two similes saying the same thing, there's the strange doubt expressed by the pilgrim (or maybe by the poet). "Whoever the master builder [of such works] might be"? Doesn't Dante know? [18:02] The pilgrim tells us he really, truly, honestly doesn't need to look back at the wood of the suicides, now far back on the horizon. Why's he so interested in that wood? Does he protest too much? [21:28] The Canto XV squad arrives! A group of men comes up from across the burning sands. And we get yet another double simile in this already fraught opening to one of the greatest cantos of INFERNO. Support this podcast

Stephanie Allain is a legend. She is the OG of what she describes as the “true badass bitch era of Hollywood”, power suits and all. Not gonna lie, it was the highlight of my month to spent this hour with her. Through her production company Homegrown Pictures, she’s produced Hustle & Flow, Something New, Beyond the Lights, Dear White People, Burning Sands, French Dirty, Leimert Park, Juanita and The Weekend. Pretty. Impressive. Consider, however, that even though she grew up near Miracle Mile in LA, she didn’t really know anybody in the business. Her humble story begins as a reader/story analyst at CAA, a job she held while also adjusting to life at home with a newborn. Her honesty and candidness are refreshing as she reflects on feeling like she messed up the first time around by spending too much time working. After many years as a reader, she realized there were many paths available. It was thanks to her mentor, Amy Pascal, that she chose to follow in her footsteps towards the trajectory of a studio executive. Watching Amy in the room taught her how to go to the next level. She realized quickly, however, that where she was going was not exactly what she thought it was going to be. And then John Singleton walked into her office at Fox with a script called BOYZ N THE HOOD and changed her life. Making that movie with John taught her how to be a true producer because he was “gangster straight” to protect it. It cemented her desire to work with writer/directors because of their singular, clear vision. Their professional relationship eventually branched out into a friendship with solid roots. Years later, she found herself at a crossroads in her life. She had the family, the nice house in Hancock Park, the career; she had it all. But she found herself wondering, “is this it?” And that’s when a little indie film about a pimp with a dream called HUSTLE & FLOW entered her life. Her and John Singleton decided to financed and produce the film together; prompting her to sell her house. It was a dark time. Her passion and her hustle got me thinking…how far would I go for my dream? Could I ever bring myself to take similar risks? How far would you go for yours?

The show is currently winning it's night and it's ratings are #1 on the network! On the show she plays fan favorite singer, “Tiana Brown. ” The show is currently airing its fourth season, Serayah recently released her single “Driving Me” on September 15 as an independent artist. Since the release, the single has gotten a lot of traction and is in heavy rotation on Sirius' HITS as well as other major radio stations in Los Angles and New York and across the country! Her video premiered on Entertainment Tonight and she has performing her hot single on shows like TRL, Wild & Out among others… The single is available on Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music. The song is about a guy Driving his girl crazy because of how stupid he's acting…. Serayah pulled the concept from various life experiences. She also came up with video concept for “Driving Me.” She wanted it to be quirky , different and really clean. We get serious (relatively speaking) on this week's episode, discussing the Netflix Original Movie, Burning Sands. Pledging to a fraternity has been a rite of passage for many a college student, but many have also questioned the sometimes extreme hazing rituals that pledges are forced to endure, all in the brotherhood. Will young Zurich (Trevor Jackson) be able to make the cut?

This week on Black on Black Cinema, the guys are back to discuss the 2017 film, #BurningSands. The film focuses on several young men as they make their final approach to pledging in their college fraternity during the insane 'hell week.' Starring Trevor Jackson as a kid desperate to make it while simultaneously trying to upstage his father's failed legacy. A hard and brutal look at Black #greeklife on the campus of an #HBCU and what people will tolerate to be included.
On this episode we continue to have those real conversations about whats driving the culture forward this past week! Jerrod Carmichael 8, Drake and Rick Ross, the controversial film Burning Sands. We also discuss Chimamanda Adiche's transgender comments; was everyone mad about her comments or did they just not want to defend their stance? And look out for part 2 with a interview with Dr. Raymond Shorter. Get your popcorn and enjoy!
On this episode we (some reluctantly) try and talk about the new Netflix movie "The Burning Sands". The movie follows a fictitious black fraternity's pledging process at a black college university. The release of the movie caused some controversy so The Green Room wanted to discuss. After being told by several people not to talk about it and being unable to secure a Fraternity or Sorority member as a guest, the topic of this show kind of shifted from the movie to, "How come no one wants to talk about it?". So we kind of get into it but we don't lol. Listen as we talk about a little of everything on this episode! Check it out!
The Three Brothers are back! RiPPa joins Jay aka Average Bro and The Uppity Negro after a hiatus. We delve head first into politics and the massive failure of Trump and GOP party when it came to "repeal and replace." The movie "Burning Sands" and Dave Chappelle's new comedy on Netflix make an appearance. Having the three back, sports comes into play with the Lavar Ball beef and whether or not Colin Kapernick has been blackballed or not.

In this episode of Six Weeks to Fitness, I am joined by Imani Hakim, best known for her role as Tonya Rock, kid sister to Chris Rock on the very popular sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris”. On March 10, 2017, Imani will star in the Netflix original Movie “Burning Sands” alongside actress Alfre Woodard. Although most people decide what career path they want to take after they graduate from high school, Imani Hakim already had developed a strong passion for acting by the tender age of seven and by age 11 she landed her first acting role in Everybody Hates Chris. During the interview, Imani will discuss how her persistence along with her father’s support and belief in her abilities, helped her land her first role. She will also discuss in detail her next movie, Burning Sands, which will give you a raw, voyeuristic journey of fraternity pledging through the eyes of one favored pledgee (Trevor Jackson), who is torn between honoring a code of silence or standing up against the intensifying violence of underground hazing. Imani will also discuss what life is like being a young actress in Hollywood auditioning for film and TV roles. Imani believes that there is no substitute for confidence, believing in yourself and getting paid to do what you love to do. Imani will also discuss her exercise routine and the important role nutrition plays in her life.

Shalom everyone. I want to continue our 9Mind exposure of the Black Boul'e aka Masons by finding out who it is these College trained males work for and who's (secrets) they have sworn to (solomenly) uphold. The last to shows where our Brother S. Cokely shared his indepth research into their secret and priviledged fraternal orders was certainly eye opening and even shocking when one reflects on the amount of power and control these secret orders of all male fraternities truly weld over the mostly unaware masses of Corporate chattel stock called humans. Many consisting largley of low income or no income underprivileged women and children. Come and share another 9Mind Sacred Sisterhood explosive night of revelations about those who serve the unseen faces and hands of global power and world domination. Be prepared to learn, be shocked but most of all be prepared to become aware that NOTHING is as it is made to appear. Let's go..... https://www.facebook.com/el.maat.73 http://www.blogtalkradio.com/el-maat https://www.facebook.com/9MINDsacredBlacksisterhood
