Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #617 is an hour of dynamic visionary acoustic improvised music made by The Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, singing bowl, Native flute, 4- and 8-string ukulele, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and Native drum. Recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts in April 2025, today's show eases in on the wave of low, heartbeat drum, crystal bowl and soaring Native flute that is “Silver Rays In The Night”, an affectingly fundamental song with a poetic lyric from Mariam punctuated by percussive Native flute. “To The Mystery Of The Starry Night” is a languid, gently propulsive folk number with beautiful 8-string ukulele, triumphant gospel piano and a fine vocal from Mariam and “Mandavina The Moose” is a gorgeous, psychedelic forest story with the ensemble turning in a nuanced and deeply affecting performance that journeys languidly through alternately lush and alien musical landscapes. “Sail On” is a beautiful waltz from the “Release” LP and receives a relaxed, emotional rendition with a fine vocal from Mariam. “Summer Around The Bend” has a beautifully relaxed air with the interaction of Mariam's ukulele, Craig's steady conga work and Bob's circular, repetitive piano motif. A signature Native flute fanfare from Mariam ushers in the emotional “Filling Each Others' Hearts”, a lovely, rich, unhurried ballad that ranges through various moods before settling into the “Romance” theme from Prokofiev's “Lieutenant Kije” suite to close today's session. Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #601 is an hour of improvised visionary acoustic music performed by The Gaea Star Band featuring Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, acoustic guitar, mandolin, crystal bowl, mandolin and ukulele, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and Native drum. Recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts in mid-December of 2024, today's show begins with the relaxed, slowly unwinding winter anthem “The Snow Queen”, a lovely folk song that paints winter with rich descriptive stanzas from Mariam. “Somebody Before You” is a rich and beautiful ballad featuring a gorgeous vocal and sweeping Native flute passages from Mariam and expressive piano from Bob and “Blessed Are The Peacemakers” is a dancing, energized minor ballad led by Mariam's chiming mandolin and Craig's propulsive conga work. “Star Ray” is a gorgeous and deeply emotional peace, simultaneously sweet and driving, with affecting, sweeping vocals from Mariam and “Trail Of Light” is a pretty, open folk gospel song propelled by Mariam's tight ukulele strumming and “Sail On” from the “Vision Quest” album appears in a gorgeous, soulful rendition that sustains the magical ukulele-piano interplay of the original supporting Mariam's powerful vocal. “May I Be The Reflection” is a spacious, minimalist arrangement that creates a vast space to feature a fine, evocative conversation between Mariam's powerful lyrics and Native flute passages that seem to fill the horizon and we close today with “Full Moon #2”, a beautifully unusual ode to the night sky that evokes moonlit vistas with clever chording and unusual melody. Time to get your surfboards waxed, get into your togs, and head to the beach.....if you're in the Southern Hemisphere. While you're splashing in the southern waves, you might want to soundtrack your time with music from the band most identified with Northern Hemisphere beaches....except we're not discussing any beach songs. Huh? Welcome to episode 180 of Love That Album. It had been a while since I had my beloved team of Shane Pacey and Kerry Fristoe on the show, so I invited them to join and gave Kerry the pick of album to discuss. She selected the 1971 Beach Boys release, Surf's Up. I added their 1970 album – the debut album on the Brother Records label – Sunflower to the mix. I felt that the albums are tied together in some ways (and given the recent box set of these sessions, Feel Flows, so do the Beach Boys). They're also quite different in many ways. We're here to contrast these albums from each other, and what came before it. But wait.....we have another wonderful guest. Joining the show for a second time is Lisa Torem. She's about to publish a book in early 2025 called “Beach Boys 1965-1979: (On Track)”. She knows her BB, that's for sure. The conversation goes to interesting places as we discuss the group's relation to ecology, politics, 1950s wistfulness, lust, harmonies (not fraternal....the other kind), musical sincerity, and much more. We look into the merits of each BB as songwriter, and why it seemed their popularity declined in the US before rising slightly with the release of these albums. Shane and I crack bad puns....I get taken over the coals for reading too deeply into something (isn't that what this show is about????) In other words.....it's a typical LTA. There's a specialist podcast about the Beach Boys I recommend called “Sail On”...so check them out (AFTER you listen to us, of course). Check out Lisa's website at https://www.lisatorem.com/ to see what she's up to, and how to get a hold of her books. We discussed Suzanne Vega last year, but she's written about other musicians as well. Turns out Lisa herself is a musician / songwriter as is her daughter Madi Torem. Madi has just released a single called Look Both Ways Before You Cross My Heart written by Lisa. Give a watch of the music video...great song...Madi has a touch of Stevie Nicks to my ears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wk2KjbTkso You can look around Shane's work at either https://shanepaceytrio.com.au/ or at https://bondicigars.com/ There's a terrific live gig with the Trio at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1iDpLOMQTw You can read Kerry's terrific film essays at https://prowlerneedsajump.wordpress.com/ and tune into her every month on See Hear podcast. Today, we sit down with the multi-talented Greg David, a guitarist, music producer, and engineer. In Part 1 of this conversation, we explore Greg David's journey through music production, the evolution from working with loops to embracing live takes, and his deep understanding of mixing and dynamics. Greg shares his perspective on creating authentic music by experimenting with non-traditional panning techniques, understanding the importance of dynamics, and the impact that recording in live settings can have on a track's energy and feel. His reflections on how the recording techniques of the past can still influence today's music provide a fresh perspective on approaching music production in modern times.Throughout the episode we discuss:* The influence of Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings on recording techniques.* How live takes differ from overdubbing and their impact on a track's authenticity.* The importance of dynamics and how Greg incorporates them into his production.* The impact of saturation and how different levels can change the feel of a mix.* Greg's transition from sample-based music to creating his own unique sound using live instruments.* How Greg's mixing philosophy revolves around creating space and balance within a track.Timeline:0:00 - Intro 1:14 - Welcome Greg David1:50 - Track 1: "Sail On" by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings4:59 - Discussion on Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings recording techniques9:33 - Track 2: "Be Better" by DJ Harrison12:28 - Organic textures and glued mixes of DJ Harrison15:11 - Live takes vs overdubbing18:52 - Toru's recent experience using live takes in his production23:46 - Track 3: "She's Gone" by Disclosure28:24 - Discussion on the modern, clean mix of the Disclosure track32:31 - Starting with drums35:33 - Greg explains why he gave up sampling and began creating all his sounds41:10 - Explanation of ADSR and how it applies to mixing45:56 - Beginning the discussion on Greg's mixing philosophy47:03 - OutroList of References from the Interview:Songs:* "Sail On" by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings* "Be Better" by DJ Harrison* "She's Gone" by DisclosureProducts:* Ableton Live (mentioned in Greg's workflow)* Tascam 388 (used for recording drum breaks)Connect with Greg David:* Instagram: @gregory_david_gtr* Spotify: Gregory David* YouTube: @GregorydavidmusicConnect with Toru:* Website: torubeat.com* Instagram: @torubeat* YouTube: @torubeat* Spotify: Toru* Apple Music: ToruCredits:This episode was co-produced, engineered and edited by Matthew Diaz. Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #577 is an hour of visionary acoustic improvised music recorded live by The Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, classical guitar, dulcimer and mandolin, Bob Sherwood on piano and bass guitar and Craig Harris on Native drum and congas. Recorded at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts in June of 2024, today's show begins with the beautiful, mystical “Sail On”, a beautiful waltz originally recorded for Mariam's “Vision Quest” album in 2014. “Leonardo” is a sprightly, bouncing folk gospel song celebrating Mariam's nylon string guitar of the same name and “You're The One” is an inspiring pop song from Mariam's “Gaea Star Crystal” album. “I Was Wondering” is a clever, crafty country rock song from the “Smooth Sailin' Love Songs” album, given an energized, inspired airing on today's show. “This Is The Way” is a lush, evocative minor key rock song enhanced with overdubs featuring Native flute, Native drum and bass guitar. Mariam wields her chiming mandolin for the summery, psychedelic “Double Winged Dragonfly”, a pretty song with a fine vocal from Mariam, austere, modern chording from Bob and steady congas from Craig. “Happy I Am”, “Smile” and “Gypsy” close today's show with energized, expanded and inspired renditions of these numbers from Mariam's “For The Children” album. Angela G. Gentile, MSW, RSW, is the author of two books in the AlzAuthors collection. She came to us in 2016 with her book, Caring for a Husband with Dementia: The Ultimate Survival Guide, inspired by her experience counseling eight amazing caregiving women. Her second book, Alzheimer's, Dementia, & Memory Loss: A Helpful Guide for Caregivers, was recently published and was featured on our blog on February 10th. Her books have been referred to as "a first aid kit," for caregivers. A social worker specializing in geriatrics with more than 25 years' experience, Angela currently works as a consultant to assist families on a dementia journey using a variety of modalities. Her carer spans work in healthcare, private practice, long-term care, home care, and non-profits, and she has written seven books and countless articles, contributed to two books, and co-authored a mobile app for iOS called Dementia Caregiver Solutions. In 2021, she started up a little hobby business called Gentle Angel Treasures, which includes her handcrafted bracelets and jewelry made from genuine, semi-precious, crystal healing gemstones. Angela is married, has two adult children, and lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. When she is not working or making jewelry, she enjoys writing, travelling, photography, and exploring what it means to age well. In this episode we discuss the value of working with a social worker one-on-one to navigate the myriad of issues related to dementia care, how language affects discussions around dementia, the upside to using humor in caregiving, and the realities of canine cognitive dysfunction, aka doggie dementia. Many thanks to Marc Gunn for this terrific podcast! I listened to the entire back catalog (a little over 520 episodes as of this review) over the past year, and have enjoyed so many great songs, including original pieces and covers of old classics. The ICM Podcast has introduced me to many bands and individual musicians I probably would never have discovered otherwise, and some are definite new favorites. I also appreciate that the podcast is released with chapter markers and time stamps within the notes. This makes identifying (and replaying) songs very easy." Originating from southern California, “Yacht Rock” is mellow soft rock music from the 1970s and 1980s, incorporating jazz fusion, harmonized vocals, and bouncy rhythms. The name came from a 2005 web series of that title, influencing musicologists to further analyze. There's playlists, countdowns, online polls, cover bands, podcasts, and streaming stations branding yacht rock. At the helm of my own interpretation, I crafted a 10 song playlist in chronological order, to lyrically make you feel you're on a yacht. #685 - Greezy Joe and Magua The Greezy Joe and Magua Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Back when Paul's show was airing on Radio Margaritaville, there was one song that created a frenzy every time it was played. People would get in touch and ask, “What was that cool song I heard?” The song was “Rum,” by Greezy Joe. It created a sensation, and there was never a tune Paul played that would inevitably create a buzz every single time. Same goes for everyone who encountered the song. Henry, the engineer thought it was great! When Paul and Jeff were in the studio producing the radio show, there was mutual affection for the song. As they say, “Shoulda been a hit.” Well, you just never know. When Paul got ahold of the Greezy Joe & The Cheap and Easy Band's album “Sail On,” he felt fortunate. Why? He knew he had stumbled upon greatness. He met Greezy Joe and his cohorts on the street of Savannah one St. Patrick's Day. In no time, Greezy Joe and one of the Cheap and Easy band members, Magua were in the studio to tell a bit of their story. Hey, before we spin the interview, just remember that The Paul Leslie Hour is only made possible through people like you, the listeners. Gaea Star Crystal Radio #479 is an hour of visionary improvised music from the Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, acoustic guitar, ukulele, Native flute and dulcimer, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and Native drums. Recorded live in late January 2022 at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, today's show begins with a jazzy Native flute workout before settling into a dynamic version of Mariam's lovely "Sail On". Next up is the evocative "Out Of The Darkness", a bittersweet piece that derives a certain melancholy from a decidedly Eastern European mode and harmonic scheme. Rising from the miasmatic ending is another piece, "Seasons Come and Seasons Go", a rolling, reverent nature prayer that picks up steam with Mariam's compelling poetry. "Silent Majesty" is another mystical, hypnotic piece characterized by a distinctive harmonic setup that cedes a very attractive stage to Mariam's drifting vocal. As tends to happen when Mariam plugs in her dulcimer and lays down a driving, rhythmically upbeat drone, "The Snow Queen She Came" is a driving, kinetic piece of fast folk with inspired piano and a fine rhythm track from Craig. Several iterations, each with its own distinct character spool out from the original harmonic framework, are born from the basic concept and "The Snow Queen She Came" becomes a series of compelling, rocking, unfolding chapters. The Band of Heathens, Sail On, Sailor ⦁ The Band of Heathens feat. There’s always so much to talk about when it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But the inquiries surrounding the black-and-gold are definitely ever-evolving, especially this week with Art Rooney II speaking out about different areas of his franchise. It seems like Art 2 is going the route of Lionel Richie and the Commodores in a few ways. I think about their songs Sail On and Easy after hearing them speak the other day. Ponder whether they are related here. But anyhow, there is surely a lot to wonder about. BTSC tries to answer some of the poignant wonderings ahead of time. Take a gander at some bold statements on this and more as we label them as fact or fiction. Are we on point? Only time will tell. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There are only a handful of bands who seem to jump fully formed onto the scene from their debut album, and one of these is certainly Lynyrd Skynyrd with their debut studio release (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd). Lynyrd Skynyrd is arguably the band that defines Southern rock. Originally formed as “My Backyard” in 1964, the group would take the name “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in 1969, taking the name of a PE teacher (Leonard Skinner) at Robert E. Lee High School — a teacher whose strict enforcement of school policies against boys having long hair resulted in guitarist Gary Rossington dropping out of high school. In addition to guitarist Rossington, the band consisted of front man Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Allen Collins, guitarist and bassist Ed King, keyboardist Billy Powell, and drummer Bob Burns.Despite the jam band feel from songs like “Freebird,” the band itself went into the studio with their songs quite perfected, and no improvisation was allowed. The album itself is terrific, and the band vaulted into an incredible popularity after opening for The Who during their Quadrophenia tour.Skynyrd would produce five studio albums before tragedy struck in a plane crash in 1977 that killed Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and the pilot and co-pilot. Other members of the band would suffer serious injuries.FOTS Bill Cook brings us this iconic Southern Rock album, which happened to be the first album he ever owned. I Ain't the OneThe opening track from the album was written by Gary Rossington and Ronnie Van Zant. It tells a story of a rich girl "tryin' to put a hook on me" when she was found to be pregnant, but "you know and I know, woman, I ain't the one."Gimme Three StepsThe lyrics that Ronnie Van Zant penned for this well known tale are a true story. Ronnie Van Zant had a fake ID, and made the rest of the band stay in the car while he went into The Little Brown Jug in Jacksonville, Florida. He was confronted by a man with a loaded 44 after dancing with his wife, Linda Lou. Van Zant ran out to the car and wrote the lyrics on the way back to their studio.Things Goin' OnThis deeper cut is appropriate for today. It is influenced by the Muscle Shoals sound, and has a great honky tonk keyboard sound. The song is a warning about social and environmental issues, and the politicians' uncaring attitudes. Tuesday's GoneA slower cut, this song has become iconic over time. Stories regarding the meaning of the lyrics conflict to a great degree. Some say it is about a girl who was left behind, while others say it is about a lifestyle that was lost as the band became famous. "Train roll on many miles from my home, see, I'm riding my blues away. Tuesday, you see, she had to be free but somehow I've got to carry on." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and the CometsThis song was part of the movie "American Graffiti," debuting in the theaters in August 1973 STAFF PICKS:“Why Should I Care” by Beck, Bogert, & AppiceBruce features a supergroup formed by Jeff Beck, Tim Bogert (bassist for Vanilla Fudge, Cactus), and Carmine Appice (drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Blue Murder). The song was written by Raymond Louis Kennedy, who also wrote "Sail On, Sailor" for The Beach Boys and "Isn't It Time" by The Babys. “Half Breed” by CherRob brings us a song about a biracial girl with a white father and a native American mother, and the lack of acceptance she found from both races. Cher had some Cherokee ancestry on her mother's side.“I Found Sunshine” by The Chi-LitesWayne's staff pick brings us the soulful sound of The Chi-Lites from Chi-town — Chicago. They were going to name the band "The Hi-Lites," but decided to make it "The Chi-Lites" in homage to their Chicago. The band charted 21 songs on the hot 100 throughout their career.“Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” by Jim CroceBill brings the staff picks home with acclaimed singer-songwriter Jim Croce's first hit. Leroy made a pass at Doris, and her husband beat him up. Leroy Brown was based on a guy that Croce met in the army. He went AWOL from the army, but was arrested when he came back for his check. Croce knew after listening to him that he would write a song about him one day. COMEDY TRACK:“Uneasy Rider” by The Charlie Daniels BandContinuing the storytelling theme, the late, great Charlie Daniels tells a story about getting stranded in a red neck bar in Mississippi.

Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #398 is an hour of acoustic visionary improvisational music featuring the Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, native flute, acoustic guitar, celtic harp, ukulele and dulcimer, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on piano. Recorded live in June 2020 at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, today’s show begins with the languid, summer-soaked “Awakening Into Crystalline Vibrations” led by Mariam’s vocal, native flute and celtic harp. “Calling The One” is a mystical, swirling groove featuring a lush, repeating piano figure from Bob under Mariam’s lovely vocal and “Lovely” finds Mariam picking up her tenor ukulele for an unusually driving piece build around lush Mideastern modes. “It Doesn’t Matter” is a beautiful minor key ballad driven by Mariam’s chiming acoustic guitar. Next up is “Keep Our Love In Sight”, a pretty nursery rhyme led by Mariam’s delicately percussive dulcimer and skipping congas from Craig. We finish up today with a classic song from Mariam, the meditative, compelling “Sail On” from the Visionquest cd.Learn more about Mariam here: http://www.mariammassaro.com

The Outpost's Gail Prusslin & Cindy Stagoff spoke with Chuck Prophet for his January concert. This episode features Chuck's thoughts on staying healthy on the road, working with his wife, and info on his new album in May 2020. Phillip Brandon is the Los Angeles-born product of the divinely yoked marriage of Phillip & Brenda Davis. Dad is a big-time jazz lover who took Phillip to his first concert: George Benson. Mom, better known as “Ms. B,” is a former Raelettes backup singer for the immortal Ray Charles with whom she travelled the world, bringing back tales of wonder to young Phillip. “I’ve always appreciated the old school showmanship of groups like Earth Wind & Fire, the O’Jays and Whispers. When I attend a show, I expect a performance! I’ll never forget the first time I saw Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. Everyone knew all the songs and came away with a good feeling. It was an experience.” Despite family roots, Phillip didn’t intend to follow in his mother’s footsteps. He attended Venice High School, an international magnet high school where he studied Japanese. He next attended Atlanta’s historical Morehouse College on a partial scholarship that required him to tour with their glee club. “We went on tour every spring singing classical repertoire and Negro Spirituals. I love travel so a light bulb went off over my head! I didn’t go to school for music, It’s just in me.” Phillip graduated with a degree in marketing but as the millennium took its turn he took part in singing competitions. “I started seeing more of the world singing in an a cappella group on cruise ships. When I sang, people often asked if I would read lines for them which led me to theater purely by happenstance,” Phillip confesses. “I did Disney Hong Kong’s ‘The Lion King’ and then a national tour of ‘The Color Purple’ playing the roles of ‘Preacher’ and ‘Ol Mister’. Again, by chance, a scout for multi-platinum-selling rock group Trans Siberian Orchestra saw me singing ‘Be Prepared’ in a YouTube video. I have since been with them for eight years as their ‘Narrator,’ touring sold out arenas from Seattle to Miami every November to January.” Itching to share some expressions from his own heart – “to get some of this crazy out of my head,” he laughs - Phillip put together a self-titled five-song EP with producer DrFord in 2013 that got him on the smooth jazz charts with the single, “Sail On.” This also gave him an opportunity to road test his cherry-picked band of top tier musicians from all over the world: drummer Victor Á. Carracedo from Spain, guitarist Eugene Gorskiy from Ukraine, keyboardist Stan Loken from America, and bassist Carlitos Cuba…from Cuba! To date they have performed primarily in intimate theatre settings on the west coast in California, Nevada and Arizona, with a couple of stops in New York City. Recently wrapping a role in “Born For This: The Musical” - the life story of Gospel legend BeBe Winans directed by “Motown: The Musical”’s Charles Randolph-Wright with Donald Lawrence as Music Supervisor - Phillip Brandon is operating with deep gratitude as he prepares to embark upon the journey of sharing with the world his amazing debut CD, The Story Begins. “Let’s face it: I’m a big black dude with a big voice,” Phillip concludes. “I can't tiptoe anywhere! I am truly unapologetic about the space that I take up and am extremely thankful to the strong foundation of support that has allowed me to be successful for 10 years and counting in this business." In this era that has had some challenging moments for folks that look like me, the silver lining is, ‘Look how far we have come.’ I am always about some hope. (Singer-Songwriter) Richard Marx once said, ‘When you’re creating, you have to be selfish to share what’s on your mind and hope it’s on the minds others’ as well.’ That’s me to a T.” Follow @phillipbrandon2 www.phillipbrandon.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/confessionsofanactress/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/confessionsofanactress/support
