Some of today's top storiesWe begin this morning with the latest on the Borel Fire, still burning in the mountains east of Bakersfield.     People in those communities still watching and waiting to return to their homes...or at least to go back and see what's left.  The U.S. Forest Service now reporting this wildfire has scorched more than 58-thousand acres. But firefighters continue to make progress... The wildfire is about 39-percent contained as of news time. The Borel Fire started over a week ago when a pick-up truck crashed over the edge of the canyon on highway 178...catching fire and killing the driver. The inferno exploded in a matter of hours...eating up dry fuel and racing up unforgiving terrain...showing firefighters fire weather they'd never seen in that area before. It more than tripled in size Friday night...destroying the historic town of Havilah in the process. The blaze continued to spread over the weekend...threatening the communities of Bodfish and Lake Isabella. But conditions eased and firefighters reported containment for the first time Monday. State and local leaders declared Borel an emergency...and CHP reopened highway 178 Tuesday. Still thousands of people remain under evacuation orders and warnings...and, while the scope of the evacuations hasn't grown in days... there's no clear timeline of when those orders will be lifted. The people of Bodfish are slowly returning to their homes in the Kern River Valley, with the grim prospect of picking up the pieces from the fire that tore through their community.    17's Rob Hagan has more on the relief efforts there.Price gouging during an emergency like the Borel Fire is illegal.    That's the warning from California's top prosecutor. Attorney General Rob Bonta issuing a reminder to businesses and landlords they cannot raise the prices of essential supplies, hotels, rental housing and more during this time of a natural disaster.    He urges those who believe they've been the victim of price gouging to report it to their local authorities.    Any business found in violation will be subject to criminal prosecution that can result in a year in jail and a possible fine up to $10-thousand dollars. In your 17 News court watch...    The trial of two men charged with the murder of a Kern County corrections counselor is nearing its end after weeks of testimony. Closing arguments began in a Bakersfield courtroom yesterday.    Prosecutors say Robert Roberts and Sebastian Parra fatally shot prison counselor Benny Alcala Jr. while trying to rob him at the Stockdale Target parking lot the night of Aug. 24, 2022. But an attorney for Roberts says *Parra* was the shooter...painting him as a psychopath who killed Alcala for no reason.    Meantime, Para's lawyer says Roberts acted alone and his client was nearby, but didn't participate.    Closing arguments will resume later this morning. The discussion on a motion to postpone a preliminary hearing of a former Bakersfield police officer charged with vehicular manslaughter is set for today.    The motion hearing was originally scheduled for July 23rd.    But attorney David A. Torres made a special appearance for the attorney representing former officer Ricardo Robles...and asked that the hearing be moved to August First -- which is today.    The 24-year-old officer is accused of driving a patrol vehicle early January 19th, 2023 at more than 100 mph –- without overhead flashing lights activated — as he tried to catch up to a chase.     He ran a stop sign and hit a Honda Accord at the intersection of South Vineland and Muller roads -- killing the driver, Mario Lares, and seriously injuring the passenger, Ana Hernandez.

Decoding the Mechanism Behind MCL-1 Inhibitors: A Pathway to Understanding MCL-1 Protein Stability

A new editorial paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 14 on June 21, 2023, entitled, “Decoding the mechanism behind MCL-1 inhibitors: A pathway to understanding MCL-1 protein stability.” The successful development of the BCL-2 inhibitor venetoclax, currently approved for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), encouraged the development of inhibitors that target other antiapoptotic proteins, particularly Myeloid Leukemia 1 (MCL-1). MCL-1 is among the top genes amplified in several cancers and is implicated in cancer progression, drug resistance and poor prognosis. It protects cancer cells from apoptosis and decreases their sensitivity to targeted agents or chemotherapeutics. In this new editorial, researchers Shady I. Tantawy, Natalia Timofeeva, Ana Hernandez, Aloke Sarkar and Varsha Gandhi from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center discussed their recent investigation into the mechanism of MCL-1 inhibitor (MCL-1i)-induced Mcl-1 protein stability. The team explored underlying molecular mechanisms that contribute to MCL-1i-induced MCL-1 protein accumulation and its implications. Their study revealed a complex and multifaceted nature of MCL-1 protein accumulation in B-cell malignancies upon treatment with MCL-1i (AMG-176 and AZD5991). “Collectively, these findings may have important implications for the development of next-generation MCL-1i with improved efficacy and safety profiles.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28440 Correspondence to - Aloke Sarkar - asarkar@mdanderson.org, and Varsha Gandhi - vgandhi@mdanderson.org Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://oncotarget.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Foncotarget.28440 Subscribe for free publication alerts from Oncotarget - https://www.oncotarget.com/subscribe/ Keywords - AMG-176, AZD5991, B-cell leukemia, MCL-1 inhibitor, MCL-1 protein About Oncotarget Oncotarget is a primarily oncology-focused, peer-reviewed, open access journal.

Many of them even go further and assert that such a subjection of one party to the other is unworthy of human dignity, that the rights of husband and wife are equal; wherefore, they boldly proclaim the emancipation of women has been or ought to be effected. This emancipation in their ideas must be threefold, in the ruling of the domestic society, in the administration of family affairs and in the rearing of the children. …This, however, is not the true emancipation of woman, nor that rational and exalted liberty which belongs to the noble office of a Christian woman and wife; it is rather the debasing of the womanly character and the dignity of motherhood, and indeed of the whole family, as a result of which the husband suffers the loss of his wife, the children of their mother, and the home and the whole family of an ever watchful guardian. More than this, this false liberty and unnatural equality with the husband is to the detriment of the woman herself, for if the woman descends from her truly regal throne to which she has been raised within the walls of the home by means of the Gospel, she will soon be reduced to the old state of slavery (if not in appearance, certainly in reality) and become as amongst the pagans the mere instrument of man (Casti Cannubii, §§74–75).Papal Encyclicals relating to Feminism or the Role of Women or relatedPapal Encyclicals:Casti Connubii Encyclical Of Pope Pius XI On Christian MarriageA Papal Decree Concerning Modesty His Holiness Pope Pius Xi 12 January 1930Sacra Propediem Encyclical Of Pope Benedict XV Paragraph 19On the Doctrine of the Modernists Pope Pius X - 1907Address to Midwives on the Nature of Their Profession Pope Pius XII - 1951Papal Directives For The Woman Of Today Pope Pius XII - 1947

April 14-May 6, 2018 Opening reception: Saturday, April 14, 2018, 5-8 p.m. Gallery hours: Saturday & Sunday 12-5 or by appointment Louisiana currently has the highest per capita incarceration rate in the United States (and the world), with 816 people in prison for every 100,000 residents. That’s nearly double the national average. Since the late 1970’s the number of people in prison has grown 30 times faster than the state’s population. While New Orleans celebrates its “Tricentennial,” Inside Out seeks to recognize our incarcerated populations and provide insights into their lived experiences. Every day in the state of Louisiana thousands of people are enduring dangerous, torturous and inhumane conditions of confinement that have long lasting physical and psychological effects. Their voices are often marginalized, yet their resilience, creativity and experiences have much to contribute to the narrative of American life and history.  Much of this exhibit relates to Angola prison or LSP (Louisiana State Penitentiary), an 18,000 acre maximum security prison located on the banks of the Mississippi river in central Louisiana on land formally occupied by slave plantations. Also known as ‘The Farm’, Angola houses 6300 incarcerated men, most of whom have life sentences among whom most will die in the prison. The Department of Corrections paired with a racially biased legal system, perpetuates a legacy of slavery by disproportionately targeting black, brown and poor white people for incarceration, the majority of whom are housed in for-profit facilities. One in eighty-six adult Louisianians are incarcerated, nearly double the national average. Among black men from New Orleans, one in fourteen are behind bars; one in seven are either in prison, on parole or on probation.

Something different for the holiday week! In this podcast, Dr. Justin Ross, Dimity, and TLAM Club Coach MK talk with Monica Knox and Ana Hernandez, two Denver-based mother runners looking to qualify for Boston at the Philadelphia Marathon. Huddled around one mic, the quintet dive into the mental side of the ladies’ race prep and discuss how to maximize performance on marathon day. In the Train Like a Mother Club in 2017, Justin—or “JRo”—will be leading small-group webinars focused on the mental aspects of running: motivation, goal setting, mental toughness, and race execution. Spoiler alert: We checked in with Ana and Monica during the busy Thanksgiving week to see how their races went. Monica had a tough week leading up to Philly, and struggled with the wind and other issues. She did not meet her time goal, but is confident she’ll make it to the Boston starting line. (We are too!) Meanwhile, Ana ran a determined 3:43, well under the 3:55 she needed to run to nab a Boston 2018 bib. *Looking to try... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
