Casa Rondeña Winery was lovingly established in late 1995 as a family undertaking, with the first plantings in 1990 at the hands of vintner John Calvin and his two young sons, Ross and Clayton. The Tasting Room opened in August 1997 and a winery building, with a commemorative Tricentennial bell tower, was completed in the autumn of 2004. In 2008, a new barrel aging and storage facility, including the Founder's Rotunda, was built in order to expand production capability of the winery and hold special events for winery members and special guests. In 2010, Mr. Calvin moved out of the home he built on the property and turned it into the 1629 Club. This is a new level of membership to the winery which includes access to the private club among many other benefits.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mr. President, Mrs. Ford, Mr. Vice President, Mr. Vice President-to-be, the distinguished guests here, you ladies and gentlemen. I was going to say fellow Republicans here but those who are watching from a distance, all those millions of Democrats and independents who I know are looking for a cause around which to rally and which I believe we can give them. Mr. President, before you arrive tonight, these wonderful people, here, when we came in, gave Nancy and myself a welcome. That, plus this, plus your kindness and generosity in honoring us by bringing us down here will give us a memory that will live in our hearts forever.Watching on television these last few nights I've seen also the warmth with which you greeted Nancy and you also filled my heart with joy when you did that. May I say some words. There are cynics who say that a party platform is something that no one bothers to read and is doesn't very often amount to much. Whether it is different this time than is has ever been before, I believe the Republican party has a platform that is a banner of bold, unmistakable colors with no pale pastel shades. We have just heard a call to arms, based on that platform. And a call to us to really be successful in communicating and reveal to the American people the difference between this platform and the platform of the opposing party which is nothing but a revamp and a reissue and a rerunning of a late, late show of the thing that we have been hearing from them for the last 40 years. If I could just take a moment, I had an assignment the other day. Someone asked me to write a letter for a time capsule that is going to opened in Los Angeles a hundred years from now, on our Tricentennial. It sounded like an easy assignment. They suggested I write about the problems and issues of the day. And I set out to do so, riding down the coast in an automobile, looking at the blue Pacific out on one side and the Santa Ynez Mountains on the other, and I couldn't help but wonder if it was going to be that beautiful a hundred years from now as it was on that summer day.And then as I tried to write-let your own minds turn to that task. You're going to write for people a hundred years from now who know all about us, we know nothing about them. We don't know what kind of world they'll be living in. And suddenly I thought to myself, "If I write of the problems, they'll be the domestic problems of which the President spoke here tonight; the challenges confronting us, the erosion of freedom taken place under Democratic rule in this country, the invasion of private rights, the controls and restrictions on the vitality of the great free economy that we enjoy." These are the challenges that we must meet and then again there is that challenge of which he spoke that we live in a world in which the great powers have aimed and poised at each other horrible missiles of destruction, nuclear weapons that can in a matter of minutes arrive at each other's country and destroy virtually the civilized world we live in.And suddenly it dawned on me; those who would read this letter a hundred years from now will know whether those missiles were fired. They will know whether we met our challenge.Whether they will have the freedom that we have known up until now will depend on what we do here. Will they look back with appreciation and say, "Thank God for those people in 1976 who headed off that loss of freedom? Who kept us now a hundred years later free? Who kept our world from nuclear destruction?"And if we fail they probably won't get to read the letter at all because it spoke of individual freedom and they won't be allowed to talk of that or read of it.This is our challenge and this is why we're here in this hall tonight. Better than we've ever done before, we've got to quit talking to each other and about each other and go out and communicate to the world that we may be fewer in numbers than we've ever been but we carry the message they're waiting for. We must go forth from here united, determined and what a great general said a few years ago is true: "There is no substitute for victory." Mr. President.

This week I had the pleasure to talk with Coach Bruce Gomez. He is the head cross country coach at Taos High School in Northern New Mexico. He's been at it for over 35 years and has coached some of the best runners in the state, with multiple state champions and championships. We talk about his own running, getting started as a kid and how it was just part of the culture for him. We talk about his start in junior high with more organized running and continuing into college. We talked a little about coaching and teaching, including a little about a Native American Studies class he taught. He also talked about participating in the1980 Tricentennial run to commemorate the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Runners retraced the path of the original runners, starting from Taos Pueblo. The book, Indian Running, discusses it and gives some history as well. Bruce is a New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame Member and I just can't speak enough about how much respect I have for him and the program he has built over the past 35 years. I'm honored to have been able to share some of his story and I hope you enjoy it. The heat just keeps coming. Take care to get your runs done early and be smart with your fitness. Stay hydrated, be kind, and keep running, New Mexico.

This week we are delighted to welcome back our good pal Kapil Seshasayee as he talks about his upcoming album, his latest single and how this particular album by Lithuanian-American musician Vyto B was a huge influence on his early work.   Tricentennial 2076 is a contender for being the most obscure thing we've yet covered on this podcast. Borning in obscurity in 1976, its existence and the mystery of its creator seemed to grow in the decades since its inception. Due to a couple of exceptional pieces by The Chicago Reader in 2019, much of the mystery of who Vyto B is was made clear to the general public. Which is particularly great for a podcast like ours, and someone as elusive as Vyto B is just catnip for us.   He claimed to have written hundreds of songs over the course of his career but most of it remains inaccessible. The music of his that is known though is fascinating. This album is a mixture between 70s acoustic folk and mental free-jazz piano pieces, all wrapped in a barely comprehensible sci-fi story set in post-apocalyptic America. Future records are all over the shop, and nothing at all like this.  This week we dive into the man, the myth and the pseudo-legend, and also chat to Kapil about his latest single, which you can listen to here: https://youtu.be/hZqF9DFkW_A Next week - something very different from this indeed.

Laine Kaplan Levenson has spent the last 10+ years telling stories about New Orleans and Louisiana. For the last three years, she's produced and hosted Tripod, New Orleans at 300. Tripod won critical acclaim for its exploration of topics related to the Tricentennial, including a mini series on our relationship with Haiti. Ever heard the word 'Bulbancha?' If not, you'll definitely want to tune in! In late 2019, Laine released Sticky Wicket, a 4-episode podcast about the often-contentious relationship between the media and Louisiana politicians. Sticky Wicket covered Huey Long, Dutch Morial, Jim Garrsion, and Kathleen Blanco. The last one will leave you thinking about Hurricane Katrina and the government's response in a different light. Join us for this discussion as we cover Tripod, Sticky Wicket and more. I had a fun time interviewing a fellow podcaster, and know you'll enjoy the conversation, too! Tripod: New Orleans at 300 returns with a look at the Desire community, then and now. If you've from New Orleans, or you’ve lived here for a minute, you know how often locals identify themselves by their neighborhood. Before Katrina, for thousands of New Orleans residents, these neighborhoods were public housing developments: the Magnolia, B.W. Cooper, C.J. Peete, the Calliope. All those developments are now gone, they’ve all been demolished, and so they’re not part of what’s been this ongoing citywide Tricentennial conversation. But these communities remain super important parts of thousands of people’s lives, and this city's history. So, for one of our final Tripod episodes we decided to hear from residents of the one of those neighborhoods: The Desire.

While she continues to be busy putting together her next documentary, Peggy and other producers are working on a WYES project called “Tricentennial Moments”. Tricentennial Moments are short, educational videos that focus on various aspects of New Orleans’ 300-year history. In this podcast, Peggy explains that this collection of videos is a multi-platform project; the videos are broadcast on WYES TV and are also available for viewing online. As part of the project, many New Orleans historic sites and buildings display signage that features QR codes. Info below. Featuring Keith Calhoun, Glenn Ford, Ana Hernandez, Maria Hinds, Chandra McCormick, Brandan Odums, Sheila Phipps, Rontherin Ratliff, John Isiah Walton, and Carl Joe Williams. April 14-May 6, 2018 Opening reception: Saturday, April 14, 2018, 5-8 p.m. Gallery hours: Saturday & Sunday 12-5 or by appointment Louisiana currently has the highest per capita incarceration rate in the United States (and the world), with 816 people in prison for every 100,000 residents. That’s nearly double the national average. Since the late 1970’s the number of people in prison has grown 30 times faster than the state’s population. While New Orleans celebrates its “Tricentennial,” Inside Out seeks to recognize our incarcerated populations and provide insights into their lived experiences. Every day in the state of Louisiana thousands of people are enduring dangerous, torturous and inhumane conditions of confinement that have long lasting physical and psychological effects. Their voices are often marginalized, yet their resilience, creativity and experiences have much to contribute to the narrative of American life and history.  Much of this exhibit relates to Angola prison or LSP (Louisiana State Penitentiary), an 18,000 acre maximum security prison located on the banks of the Mississippi river in central Louisiana on land formally occupied by slave plantations. Also known as ‘The Farm’, Angola houses 6300 incarcerated men, most of whom have life sentences among whom most will die in the prison. The Department of Corrections paired with a racially biased legal system, perpetuates a legacy of slavery by disproportionately targeting black, brown and poor white people for incarceration, the majority of whom are housed in for-profit facilities. One in eighty-six adult Louisianians are incarcerated, nearly double the national average. Among black men from New Orleans, one in fourteen are behind bars; one in seven are either in prison, on parole or on probation.

The exhibit is part of the tricentennial of New Orleans celebration and is a great way to envision what the city was like at the very beginning. It brings together a vast array of rare artifacts from the Historic New Orleans Collections holdings, and from institutions across Europe and North America to tell the stories of the city’s early days. To help us explore the exhibit, I am joined by the exhibition curator, Erin M. Greenwald. Erin is currently the Curator of Programs at the New Orleans Museum of Art, but was previously the Senior Curator and Historian at the Historic New Orleans Collection. She was the lead curator in putting New Orleans, the Founding Era together and shares her stories and insights about what you'll see when you visit the exhibit. While the exhibit is gone, this episode will give you a glimpse into that infamous red light part of New Orleans. If you want to learn more about the founding of New Orleans, I strongly recommend you check out my discussion with author Richard Campanella, in episode #53 - Bienville's Dilemma and the Founding of New Orleans. Thank You Thanks to Erin Greenwald for talking with us about the exhibit. Erin is extremely busy with both the exhibit and her role as the the Curator of Programs at the New Orleans Museum of Art, not to mention being a mom. (Erin - I hope the performance of James and the Giant Peach was splendid!) Thanks to the team at the Historic New Orleans Collection for inviting me to the sneak preview of New Orleans, the Founding Era, and for reaching out about the interview. A special thanks to Lauren Noel and Eli Haddow for pulling everything together! Want to Make Your Trip to New Orleans the Best Ever? Of course you do! Technological chaos, throat-destroying sickness, travels to the Sooner State and holiday obligations kept Fuzzy Notes off the air for way too long...but we're back with more music made by furs! Join Fuzzy Notes alum Bunnies for Real and Asid Rayne, and new comers Skootums, Kenko Sabre Wolf, FeoranPride and Zackwell in the first episode of 2015! Fuzzy Notes is a podcast featuring the music made by members of the furry fandom, with chatter and rambles from it's host Potoroo (or Roo for short!) It started in 2012 and has featured over a hundred artists and nearly three hundred songs. Currently, Fuzzy Notes is being moved to a new home where you will be able to hear the entire series from Episode One. Please keep an eye and ear out for the big move in early 2015.
