Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery is looking forward to what may be their best season in years. “There's a post COVID enthusiasm which was first evidenced by the submissions that we had that have resulted in seven shows. There's no hesitation about Covid rules, or what we should or shouldn't do. We've been a nonprofit for a year and a bit, and the new manager has had a year behind her. Things feel more settled, and more focused on the magic of the shows than the behind the scenes business that the boards have to handle in any organization in a big time of change,” explained Oriane Lee Johnston (OLJ). “One thing that Islanders can look forward to is a full season starting from the 9th of July.” “There will be a grand opening with 'Between Heaven and Earth' with the Thursday afternoon Arts Collective. Seven artists have been meeting pre-pandemic in Lisa Gibbons studio every Thursday afternoon and have a body of work that we are all now going to see.” “The last show closes on the 10th of September with the Annual Members Show. That will be a grand finale where every Cortesian who fancies themselves an artist, or who is an artist, may submit a piece or two pieces for exhibition in the gallery.”

Charlotte Nightingale joins Purposely to share her founder story starting the Glass Ceiling Arts Collective The charity based in Auckland supports people from marginalised communities, especially young people with disabilities. Charlotte is the co-founder and inaugural artistic director of the inclusive arts provider, helping young people with disabilities to ‘smash the glass ceiling that has been unfairly set in the arts world'. A teacher and actor by trade she overcame ‘crippling anxiety and a chromosome disorder' to take roles on the stage and on television. Charlotte has a passion for inclusion and describes how her lived experience of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) transformed her life and gave her a real purpose, ‘my diagnosis with ADHD in my thirties fuelled my passion to want to help others, it went from being a negative thing at the start of my life to bringing lots of positivity'. She has embraced a wide-ranging career from studying, acting, teaching, retail, recruitment, and radio. Charlotte points to her ADHD as a factor in trying so many different roles and experiences. She also talks about it being a superpower, enabling her to focus intensely on the task in hand, each challenge ‘obsessed over at the time'. As well as her own experience of ADHD she sites her family's experience of disability, her son's autism, and her grandparents who both had a disability and suffered bigotry because of their differences. Born in the UK, Charlotte migrated to New Zealand in 2009 and worked as a drama teacher, she then set up her own agency directing theatre productions in local schools. Charlotte announced herself onto the New Zealand television scene with a role on 'Shortland Street', a popular medical drama, playing a high-profile defence lawyer. She also featured in a longstanding and high-profile advertising campaign for a national supermarket. On the stage she held a lead role in an adaptation of Mamma Mia. During her time in the UK her most high-profile roles were on the UK drama ‘Eastenders' and ‘Keen Eddie' as well stage roles performing Shakespeare. Charlotte launched Glass Ceiling Arts Collective with her co-founder Michael Eaglesome in early 2020 with a presentation of a new work called The Incredible and Glorious World According to The Fitzroys, as part of the Auckland Fringe Festival. The show is about a young boy with autism and was a wonderful opportunity for audiences to explore their own perception of disability. The show was a great success, and they were all delighted to win ‘Best Performance' (Ensemble). Charlotte has a BA Hons in Performing Arts majoring in Acting, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

The Social Yet Distanced is an Arts Collective. Our focus is on small press, small business, and all things art. Our platform is designed to carry us outside the norms many artists default to in the promotion of their work and the evangelism of art. We often find ourselves siloed into less than productive but established systems for furthering of the mission. As an example, many of my writer friends write books then promote them only to other writers who are also writing books they are promoting to other writers. Meanwhile, there is a probability the rest of the reading world has no idea that writer exists. We aim to break that mold.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/socialyetdistanced/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/socialyetdistanced/support

There's so much in this episode that I don't even know where to begin. It's less question and answer. More of a conversation between two friends. I've been meaning to catch up with Rose and record an episode of the podcast for a long time now. We go way back. Childhood friends dancing side by side for only a couple of years – but a couple of very formative years in our teens. Before the pandemic hit, Rose was working on a feature film and HBO special which meant that she was constantly flying between London, New York, LA and Paris. So it was hard to lock down some of her precious time! But like many, Rose has recently found herself with a little extra time on her hands. Of course the work of an artist never stops, but she's certainly not travelling like she was before the lockdown. Currently Rose is settled at home in London. We cover so many topics in this conversation and it was so nice to connect with an old friend who can relate to a time in your life that so few can. You'll hear that we often dance around a few topics, a little unsure about what to share publicly in case it deters a young dancer from chasing their dreams… But I want any young dancers listening to know that whilst there are still some shockingly abusive teachers around, they are so few and far between than back in my day. These days it's so easy to expose indecent practices and teachers who are in this profession for the wrong reasons just can't get away with what they used to. My advice? Parents, do your research. Students, trust your gut. These days there truly are some beautiful ballet teachers who are constantly striving to produce more holistic and healthy dancers. When you find one, hold onto them for dear life. Anyway, I admire Rose's ability to so eloquently describe her thoughts and feelings around past events whilst forgiving, moving past and more importantly moving forward with her art, vision and purpose. Now, this episode was recorded about four weeks ago during a time that studio owners like myself and freelancers like Rose were navigating our thoughts and feelings around online teaching. My studio is back IN the studio (thank god!) but I do share how we went about joining the online landscape whilst Rose shares some thoughts that I couldn't agree with more. But the main reason why I invited Rose onto the podcast was because she is a true artist. Sometimes I come across a young student who naively declares they're going to ‘start a dance company' or be ‘an artist' when they grow up. But what does that even mean? What does that even look like? I'll tell you what it looks like. It looks bloody hard! It's filled with sacrifice. Rose so kindly shares an incredibly vulnerable story of what it's really like to be an Artistic Director trying to get a performance off the ground. So much can go wrong between that initial idea for a performance, it's execution and the finished product – especially when the arts is so incredibly underfunded compared to other industries. Let's not sugarcoat this. It's incredibly easy to have a dream or vision. It's not so easy to execute. And most don't have the guts, drive, determination or willpower to push forward when the world seems to be crumbling from underneath you. Let alone the grit to make it happen against all odds and the grace to ask for help when the purpose is far greater than you. To me, this is what a true artist is. Someone who believes so much in what they are creating that it doesn't matter what challenges they face – the show must go on. Before I launch into our conversation; I'm proud of you Rose. I still look up to you as I did when I was a little girl. We have different dreams today, but if I walk through life with even half the grit you possess I'll be pretty fortunate. _______________ Get your FREE Balanced Ballerinas 'Intention Setting' worksheet HERE and start kicking GOALS: https://www.balancedballerinas.com/product/balanced-ballerinas-intention-setting-worksheet/ You can find more resources at www.balancedballerinas.com Instagram @thebalancedballerina Podcast @balancedballerinas Facebook - Balanced Ballerinas (ensure you join the *SECRET* Facebook group too!)
