In this episode I address the necessary concerns and desire for police reform tangibles as part of any campaign agenda for 2024's Presidential election. Follow up will be coming. Stay tuned.
In the second part of the Defunding the Police episode, Chas Moore, founder of the Austin Justice Coalition, talks about controversial police shootings. He emphasizes that defunding the police aims to redirect funds to community resources, addressing the root causes of crime rather than eliminating law enforcement entirely. The episode highlights the need for a broader conversation on policing and improving public understanding. In this episode, Lisa is joined by Jason Rantz, author and radio host, to discuss how radical left policies and the COVID-19 pandemic have played a significant role in the deterioration of our cities. He highlighted two major impacts of these policies: making cities less safe and happy, and dictating how people should live. One of the most striking points Rantz made was about the belief on the left that arresting criminals is somehow racist. This belief has gained prominence since the death of George Floyd and the mainstreaming of the Black Lives Matter movement. Rantz shared his experiences during the CHOP Era in Seattle, where he witnessed crimes being committed and violence escalating, despite the media portraying it as a peaceful street fair. One of the most dangerous things in theology today is trying to find everything in the news in prophecy. And part of the error (and honestly more serious) is applying the prophecies (warnings and promises) given to Israel to the United States. We are not "God's people." We are not Judah. We are not the city of Jerusalem. We do not have a covenant with the Lord. This error is most often seen when 2 Chronicles 2:14 is ripped from its context and applied to the USA or even to the "church." Today, we look at this error with a prophecy in Jeremiah. We look at a couple of pro-trans laws in Seattle: putting rapists into women's prisons and letting boys compete against girls in sports. We then move on to the Defund the Police movement of 2020. Like I've always said, states and locales can pass all the laws they want, but they need to be able to live with the results. That's how federalism is supposed to work. And as Churchill once said (paraphrased), no matter how beautiful the strategy, sometimes you need to look at the results.
I'm off this week, so my son and co-host, Connor, handles the show solo. Now I don't agree with him, but I think you'll find his argument for defunding the police is the most powerful and thoughtful take on a (wrongheaded) idea you've ever heard!
This week on A Podcast About Catholic Things, Dan and Eric talk about the world-wide insanity happening in almost every major city. The riots seem to be about more than racism and police brutality. What is under attack is Americanism--and we have to fight to keep it alive. In the news, the WHO is reporting new cases of Ebola. Vladimir Putin spills 20,000 tons of oil into a river. Space X deploys 60 more Starlink satellites. Governor Northam in Virginia tears down a Rober E. Lee monument. In the land of nonsense, the Grim Reaper makes an appearance in Florida. In Dallas, a demolition crew screws up and half demolishes building. I covered some of this in last week's column in the Jewish Standard, but I have limited space for my columns and there's so much more to talk about, so even if you read the column, listening to this episode. The word “defund” has only one meaning, regardless of what dictionary we use. To defund something is to take away the money from that something. The slogan “Defund the police” is just another way of saying “let's get rid of the police altogether.” That slogan, though, is what stands in the way of dealing effectively with police violence. We should be advocating, instead, for the right ways to meet the problems that are so readily evident in such cases as the deaths of George Floyd and Tyre Nichols.Support the show

Hey Identifier, https://www.aclu.org/news/criminal-law-reform/ending-qualified-immunity-once-and-for-all-is-the-next-step-in-holding-police-accountable #police #defundthepolice #cops As protesters filled the streets last summer to decry the tragic killings by police of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others, they brought signs and slogans with them. Poster board and cardboard pieces were lifted into the air with firm demands scrawled across them: “Justice for George,” “#SayHerName,” “I Can't Breathe,” and “No Justice, No Peace” were familiar phrases bobbing amongst the sea of activists. As the weeks stretched on, the movement catalyzed by the hideous killing of Floyd caught on video continued to grow, with millions of people taking to the streets. Among the signs, a more specific demand began to appear: Abolish qualified immunity. Once an obscure legal doctrine, qualified immunity is now in the spotlight — and in the crosshairs of many activists and advocates nationwide. For decades, the doctrine has shielded police officers and other government employees from being held responsible for all sorts of malfeasance. Qualified immunity makes it nearly impossible for individuals to sue public officials by requiring proof that they violated “clearly established law.” In a rare show of solidarity with protesters in cities like Minneapolis, New York, and Portland, courts and state legislatures began to take notice, too — in June, Colorado lawmakers passed a bill that gutted the doctrine's power in state courts. Multiple lower federal court decisions have also acknowledged how qualified immunity functions more as absolute immunity, and shields police officers from accountability, with even a conservative Supreme Court justice calling the doctrine into question. [00:30] Mike Pence Defends FBI Raids (13 minutes) Yesterday, Mike Pence said regarding the fallout from the Mar-a-Lago raid, “Calls to defund the FBI are just as wrong as calls to defund the police.” But as Tucker Carlson pointed out earlier this week, the Mar-a-Lago raid was an attack on the rule of law, not an attempt to enforce the law. Pence doesn't understand the difference between a federal policing power that has been weaponized by radical Communist Democrats and local law enforcement deputies who report to an elected sheriff or a police chief appointed by an elected mayor. As Steve Bannon pointed out on his podcast, don't defund the police, but definitely defund the police state! [13:35] Liz Cheney Defeat Demonstrates Trump Trend (7 minutes) Liz Cheney didn't just lose her Wyoming primary on Tuesday—she lost bigly. According to CNN, her loss is one of the largest ever for a House incumbent, the second worst since the 1960s. CNN called it “part of a pattern this primary season pointing to former President Donald Trump's strength within the Republican Party.” Cheney's loss is the latest in a trend of previously popular incumbents losing to Trump-supported candidates. [20:30] What Was the FBI Really Looking for in Mar-a-Lago? (20 minutes) Newsweek reported yesterday that the “true target” of the FBI raid was “documents that Trump had been collecting since early in his administration” that the DOJ was afraid he “might weaponize.” The stash apparently included documents relating to Russia collusion and 2016 election interference that exonerated Trump. It appears the FBI used the Presidential Records Act as a facade to recover incriminating documents that would expose its lawlessness. [40:10] The Plague of the Human Heart (15 minutes) The Bible says that the heart of man is terribly sick and deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9). The nations of Israel today are sick from head to toe (Isaiah 1:5-6), but instead of trying to hide it, we “declare our sin as Sodom” (Isaiah 3:9). In a sin-drenched world, we must not follow the crowd; instead, we must surrender to God and allow Him to clean up our lives, giving us a new heart that is like His.
Trump furious he couldn't overcharge FBI agents during their brief stay at Mar a Lago; Republicans starting to think maybe they should have let Merrick Garland sit on the Supreme Court instead. It's the GOP that wants to defund the FBI, the Justice Department, the Internal Revenue Service and every other law enforcements agency that tackles white collar criminals like Donald Trump. The only law enforcement agencies Trump and the GOP care about are local police officers who protect property and the rich while keeping the poor in a perpetual state of fear. As luck would have it, two hours and thirteen minutes into tonight's episode the FBI raided Donald Trump's Mar a Lago, and Republicans immediately proved my point by calling to defund the FBI. A little over two years ago, mass protests in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man in Minneapolis, focused public attention on the dramatically higher rates at which the police use force against Black and Latinx people. More broadly, the Black Lives Matter movement has put a spotlight on deep-seated systemic racism in the criminal justice system in the U.S. and beyond. Against this backdrop, many reform advocates have called for a fundamental reorientation of priorities and resources with calls to “defund the police”: to shift money away from armed law enforcement and toward unarmed first responders and investments in communities. The phrase “defund the police” has been a powerful rallying cry for millions of Americans seeking to reimagine the relationship between the state and communities of color. However, some critics, including leaders within the Democratic Party, have argued that calls to cut police budgets might undermine support for change by allowing opponents to equate police reform with leaving neighborhoods unpatrolled and unprotected. It's possible that the slogan “defund the police,” while mobilizing core supporters, turns away other people who actually support the substance of reform. Our guest today, Dr. Genevieve Bates, is interested in how the way we talk about racial justice in policing shapes public support for reform. Gen is an Assistant Professor of Political Science here with us at UBC, and has to date mostly worked in the fields of international relations and comparative politics, studying transitional justice mechanisms in the wake of civil war. But recently, Gen has teamed up with coauthor Geneva Cole – who studies racial politics in the US – to examine the effect of alternative framings of police reform on public attitudes. What they've been especially interested in are the ways in which efforts to root out systemic racism in policing look a lot like post-conflict, or post-authoritarian, transitional justice initiatives. This suggests an intriguing possibility: what if, instead of talking about criminal justice reform as defunding the police, advocates framed reform as part of a larger international movement to redress past state abuses and defend human rights? This is the question that Gen and Geneva tackle through a novel survey experiment that they recently carried out in the US.In this episode, we talk with Gen about the broad criminal-justice reform landscape, about how she and Geneva drew the connection between transitional justice and police reform, how they designed their experimental treatments, and why it's important to study not just generic support for reform but support for implementing concrete, real-world reforms in people's own communities. This episode puts the study of American politics into dialogue with the study of international relations and comparative politics in an unconventional way: by seeing what happens if we ask Americans, who often view their political system as exceptional, to place their own societal conflicts and challenges in a comparative perspective. We also talk with Gen about why and how the study of international relations itself ought to be grappling with issues of race.
