Send us a textOn this episode of the Stories to Create Podcast, Cornell Bunting sits down with Dani Papanikolaou, also known as "Papa," a mixed-media painter and sketchbook artist celebrated for his innovative exploration of saturation and line. Papa's work, often centered on nude figures, reflects his unique aesthetic inspired by urban tribalism and rooted in Neo-Expressionism, abstraction, action painting, and street art. His distinctive style is marked by bold mark-making techniques and striking color dissonance, making his creations instantly recognizable. As a live painting performer, Papa channels instinct and improvisation to bring each canvas to life.Born and raised in Florida, Papa has lived across the state and resides in Naples, FL. Over the past eight years, he has served as an educator, mentor, and community leader in Southwest Florida. Currently pursuing an MFA in Painting at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), Papa envisions a future in academia and philanthropy.Papa's passion for portraiture and the human form stems from a deep fascination with the human psyche, which he explores through abstraction and expression. On the podcast, he shares insights into his creative process, including using automatic drawing to unlock his artistic potential. His vibrant and unapologetic use of color adds complexity and emotional depth to his work, evoking raw, genuine responses.During the episode, Papa discusses key elements of his artistic journey, including his Continuous Sketchbook Entries, Live Nude Figure Drawing, Action Painting, and his early experiments with Nonsensical Doodles and Prose. Reflecting on his creative ethos, Papa states, "I possess an investigative interest in mark-making with a love of exploring swashes of bold colors. I am a live painting performer, favoring synesthetic performances done in public or with an audience."This captivating and inspiring interview offers a glimpse into the mind of an artist who continues to push boundaries and innovate. Automatic Drawing - Austin Osman Spare - Short Audio Book - Esoteric / Chaos Magick / Occult. Austin Osman Spare was an English artist and occultist who worked as both a draughtsman and a painter. Influenced by symbolism and art nouveau his art was known for its clear use of line, and its depiction of monstrous and sexual imagery. In an occult capacity, he developed idiosyncratic magical techniques including automatic writing, automatic drawing and sigilization based on his theories of the relationship between the conscious and unconscious self. Hello DT fam! This week on the DT Podcast we’re making a drawing based on an old surrealist drawing practice: Automatic Drawing. Popularized in the early 1900’s automatic drawing by famous artists like Andre Breton and Joan Miro, this exercise helps us get out of our busy brains into our instinctual bodies. When we let our bodies take the lead, it’s surprising what reveals itself on the page. I’ll share more about the history of Automatic Drawing and body/subconcious-focused art in next week’s subscriber news letter. While the surrealists called this Automatic Drawing, I’m renaming it, and calling our drawing today “Body’s Choice". I’m stealing this phrase from my dear friend, the writer Courtney Martin. (If you don’t subscribe to her newsletter The Examined Family you’re missing out.) I heard Courtney use that terms when talking to her eldest daughter Maya. Maya was maybe 5 or 6 at the time, and Courtney was giving Maya a couple options. Instead of asking her, “What do you think?” she offered, “Body’s Choice!” and Maya knew immediately which direction she wanted to pursue. It completely blew me away. So many of us are trained to default to our rational brain for decision making. In turn, we lose touch with those first, most essential feelings - the ones that occur in our bodies. By practicing listening to the body, trusting it, and leading with it, we develop a deeper understanding of who we are and what is right for us. And while we practice noticing that what is right for OUR bodies, we also notice that it’s often different than what’s right for OTHER people’s bodies. And we can develop a strong respect for that, too. By having awareness and boundaries around our own bodies, not only do we respect ourselves but we respect other people, too. My body, my choice. Your body, your choice.Hope you enjoy today’s DT Podcast. I’d love to see what you draw. Share it out on Instagram and tag @drawtogether.studio so we can share it there, too - or email us a photo here and we’ll share it in next week’s email. Speaking of, check out 8 year old Cole’s awesome Doodle Game Drawing. SO MUCH FUN. Everything is better when we draw together, xoxo,w Get full access to DrawTogether with WendyMac at club.drawtogether.studio/subscribe
After a summer hiatus, Stephanie Dueñas and Russell Shoemaker (finally) discuss Swedish painter Hilma af Klint's journey to abstraction, from a young girl in Navy Cadet school to an accomplished, individual, and independent female artist - a rare combination in the 19th century. Hilma is often sensationalized as a mystical hermit artist who spoke to ghosts, or as the inventor of abstract art - both of which sound sexy for an exhibition - but do a disservice to an artist who worked with such intentionality and purpose throughout her life. Hilma's interest in the unseen, science, religion, clairvoyance, and meditation would lead her to find the connective threads between representation and abstraction. For example, like in The Ten Largest ; Ten giant, powerful, and vibrant paintings, while deeply personal to her, have a universal message everyone can connect to. Topics include Madame Helena Blavatsky, Theosophy, gweenies, God Bod, astral chore coats, ice-cream sampling, Swedish Melodic Death Metal Band De Fem, and pony parties. David Schiesser (he/him) - Berlin 2016 You must dive into @ds_008 / www.davidschiesser.com Once again Michele suggested that I meet this person David from Frankfurt who guested in London with him. He was visiting Berlin to see friends and tattoo (it's imperative that I have a particular connection with folks to share space with). I invited him over for a UNIV ERSE breakfast at the studio and immediately understood the tattoos (as they come directly from the mind of a spacial genius). This really shifted my first takes on others work when I initially feel unclear. David soon moved to Berlin to continue perusing his fine art practice (and tattoo with me at UNIV ERSE Studio when he wanted). He landed a great space and was trying to live and paint and tattoo from it (a recipe for burnout as I've experienced). I was away on tour once and a few of them did an event at UNIV ERSE Studio that I keep hearing about now years later (David, Michele and Paolo I believe?).
What a blessing to connect with Wendy Oke, niece-in-law of Alma Rumball. Alma was the vehicle behind hundreds of incredible, intricate, prolific drawings. She insisted that "the hand" moved on its own, guided by an invisible force which flowed through her and filled the pages without her intellectual or creative influence. The spiritual advisor to the Dalai Lama identified many of the figures in her drawings as Tibetan dieties, the existence of which this reclusive woman in a tiny town in Ontario had no knowledge. In this fascinating episode we discuss many topics: - After a profound vision of Christ, Alma began doing automatic, spiritual, inspirational drawings, her hand moving on its own. - Activations through the drawings, “The Sacred Language of Light.” - The drawings and writings in relation to “the new age of light” and Atlantis. - Tibetan deities in the drawings as identified by the Dalai Lama's spiritual advisor, Kalu Rinpoche. - The conflict Alma experienced as the drawings and writings conflicted with her religious beliefs. - Alma was drawing Wendy's picture decades before they ever met. She explains the prophecy of her being the one to show the drawings to the world. - Wendy shares mystical stories of where the drawings have led her all over the world, from Glastonbury to Italy to Australia to Mt. Shasta. - From a practical standpoint, how can the drawings be used to expand consciousness? In this podcast, I'm showcasing the beautiful restorative work of Brana Records and the atmospheric debut album of Mike Ladouceur (@mike-ladouceur), Between Worlds. Brana Records is a label that is focused on restoring the wonderful rare recordings by the Polish/Brazilian pianist, Felicja Blumental. As well as recording the great masterpieces such as the piano concertos of Grieg and Rachmaninoff, Ms Blumental championed neglected early 19th century piano composers such as Clementi, Kuhlau, Czerny, and solo piano music by Spanish and Portuguese Baroque composers. She enjoyed a relationship with leading composers such as Penderecki and Villa-Lobos - he dedicated his Fifth Piano Concerto to Ms. Blumental, which she performed under the composer with leading orchestras of Europe and recorded for EMI in Paris with the Orchestre National. Her appearances in South and North America brought her further stardom. Many of these recordings are now released on Brana Records and all CD covers feature the fine art prints of Felicja Blumental's husband, Markus Mizne. It was a delight to receive a copy of one of these CDs; Ms Blumental's beautiful artistry and shimmering pianism shines through her recordings. Visit branarecords.com to learn more about Brana Records and purchase these CDs. Last week, I spoke to Mike Ladouceur, known for working on blockbusters like Ad Astra and Mission Impossible – Fallout, as well as the BBC hit TV series His Dark Materials. Mike's debut album, Between Worlds, is out now. It features 42 of London's top musicians - the music was recorded at Angel Studios and is published by Warp Publishing. Between Worlds was designed as a multi-artform, immersive experience. The album is accompanied by bespoke videos, presenting space scenes from NASA's satellite photography with stunning landscapes taken on earth from drone footage filmed by Phillip Whiteman. Nick Denman's album artwork uses the Automatic Drawing process, and is a series of paintings with acrylic and charcoal on canvas. In this interview, we talked about some of the ways online teaching can benefit music students during this current crisis. We also discussed the importance of narrative and individuality within a composer’s voice, and this is something that is very much at the heart of Between Worlds. We talked about the creative process behind the album and the collaboration between other narrative media. Many thanks to Jonathon Tester for putting me in touch with Mike about his wonderful projects, and to Mike for taking the time to talk to me! Interview recorded 1st May 2020; published 9th May 2020. Mike's film and TV credits include music for Dateline (NBC) and Aurora Fearnley's epic Sci-fi Pulsar (Little Northern Light/Reel Issues Films), which stars David Gyasi and Jessie Buckley. Mike enjoys working with the internationally celebrated composer Lorne Balfe, and has written additional music and arrangements for His Dark Materials (HBO/BBC) and for Master Moley (Nottage Productions) starring Gemma Arterton, Charles Dance, Julie Walters, Warwick Davis. Mike worked as Orchestrator on major projects including Ad Astra (Plan B), Gemini Man (Skydance/Paramount), and worked on the Music Department of Mission Impossible: Fallout (Paramount), The Emoji Movie (Sony) and Call the Midwife (BBC). Mike’s notable career highlights are many and varied, and include winning the Angel Award for Best Original Music, Short Film for BirthCloud, and the Tagore Gold Medal for outstanding musical contributions at the Royal College of Music, presented in March 2016 by HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. Mike is a passionate educator and holds prestigious teaching posts at two of the world's leading institutions, London's Royal College of Music and the University of Cambridge, where he teaches the film music curriculum at both undergraduate and Master's levels. Mike is signed to Warp Publishing.
