This weekend, Christians around the world are commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For the Catholic Church, Easter is the most important festival of the year. To mark the occasion, we paid a visit to a small German-speaking Catholic church called Saint Christopher's, located in Camberwell in Melbourne and founded by German immigrants in the early post-war period. - Dieses Wochenende gedenken Christen auf der ganzen Welt dem Tod und der Wiederauferstehung von Jesus Christus. Brother Richard returns for our annual Christmas chat. We explore the idea of the wild man and, perhaps, the dogman/werewolf being an even more savage, wilder version of our modern wild man. We also discuss Saint Christopher and the cynocephalic saints – those who are pictured with dog heads; werewolves; Saint Patrick's and Saint Natalis' werewolf legends; the woodwose; Christmas wild men; and more. In Episode 612: Biblical Dogmen, guest host, Joel Thomas, is joined by Juan Ayala from the Juan on Juan Podcast and Justin England from Cryptids of the Corn Podcast in a mind bending journey of Dogmen tribes and lycanthropy (werewolves) from Biblical, alchemical and biological viewpoints. They look at the connection between dogs, humans, kings and the gods, including the dog headed Egyptian god of judgement and protection, Anubis, which also spawned off the cult of Hermanubis which was located in Cynopolis, the “city of dogs”.  They then explore the possibilities of Virophages, small, double-stranded DNA viral phages that require the co-infection of another virus which could be linked to Fallen Angel DNA manipulation creating a Dogman cryptid species. The topic of the ancient race of dog-headed men, better known as the Cynocephali is brought into the mix, generating discussion on the Geek physician Ctesias first written account of the Dogmen tribe in the mountains of India, Herodotus interaction with the same tribe and Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus own experience with war like tribes of Dogmen of the same Cynocephalus. Saint Christopher, is also discovered as a Cynocephalus, a Dogman who allegedly met Jesus Christ and turned from his life of sin to become a patron saint of the church. That leads the group to a Biblical revelation that Moses first wife could have been a werewolf and King Nebuchadnezzar II may have also been cursed with lycanthropy in a warning from the Prophet Daniel. Hold on tight to that Lycan fur because this episode will have you howling to the moon. In this week's show, we kick off the Halloween season with a deep-dive on the culturally diverse phenomena of the werewolf, its profoundly ancient origins and how it evolved into the beloved horror trope we enjoy today. In the free section of the show we discuss its ancient association with war, rites of passage, its adoption into pagan mythology, the medieval Christian witch-hunts and the important role it played in secret shamanic folk practices from all over the European continent. In the extended version of the show we discuss the good werewolves or Benandanti as they fought evil witches of Satan, how this deeply confused the inquisitors who recorded it, how medical lycanthropy works, the multiple ancient eye-witness accounts of dog-headed people from around the world, early esoteric Christianity, the cenocephaly of Saint Christopher and what it all has to do with the Egyptian deities Anubis and of course Wepwawet. May 21: Saint Christopher Magallanes, Priest and Martyr, and Companions, Martyrs Fr. Magallanes: 1869–1927; 22 priests and 3 laymen: 1915-1937, the majority killed between 1926-1929 Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: Red A Mexican bloodletting The governor of Mexico's Tabasco state in the 1920s, Garrido Canabal, was so insanely anti-Catholic that he named his three sons Lenin, Satan, and Lucifer. He was also a farmer and named one of his bulls “God,” a hog “Pope,” a cow “Mary,” and a donkey “Christ.” He ordered the removal and destruction of all crucifixes from public buildings and graveyards in Tabasco. Painful photographs of the destruction prove that it happened. For his vicious persecution of the Church, he was elevated to a national cabinet position in the 1930s. Canabal was a political protégé of the Mexican president, and later strongman, Plutarco Calles. Calles was an illegitimate child, born to unmarried parents. Calles hated being called an illegitimate child and especially resented the Roman Catholic Church for this title of illegitimacy. In time, Calles became a devout believer in the religion of atheism, eagerly shared his beliefs with others, and put great energy into evangelizing others to his side. As governor of the state of Sonora, he expelled all Catholic priests. As president of Mexico, he carried out an overtly violent, ferocious, scorched-earth attack on Catholicism without par in the twentieth century. Priests were killed for no other reason than for being priests. This led to a popular counterreaction known as the Cristero War, a slow burn of assassinations, pitched battles, skirmishes, and reprisals. Central Mexico was in a full-blown meltdown in the 1920s. For a visitor to Mexico today, or to anyone familiar with its culture, such events are difficult to imagine or comprehend. Mexico harbors one of the most vibrant Catholic cultures in the entire world, thick with devotions, processions, Masses, feast day celebrations, and religious song and dress. Yet the Cristero War did happen, and not a thousand years ago. The militant, anti-religious mentality of Anglo-Saxon secular humanism is familiar to many believers today. It is the air we breath. This educated secularism opposes the very idea of God, exalts a narrow understanding of freedom, denigrates the concept of belief, and transposes science as an object of faith rather than a formal creed. The militant anti-religious mentality of 1920s Mexico, and of other culturally Catholic nations, was and is different from Anglo-Saxon secularism. Anti-Catholicism in Catholic nations expresses itself in anticlericalism. Hatred is unleashed against bishops and priests and their instruments of ministry—altars, crucifixes, vestments, rosaries, statues, etc.—not so much against creeds or ideas. You don't need to read Nietzsche or to master the Enlightenment canon to hate the Church. Whereas Anglo Saxon secularism wages its battles in the higher echelons of university classrooms and the courts, Latino anticlericalism is not too complex. Just kidnap a priest, blindfold him, tie his hands tightly behind his back, and shoot him in the head. Anticlericalism liquidates its enemies against the dirty brick wall behind the local police station. No courtrooms are needed. Today's saint, and the others canonized with him, were caught in the storm that was Plutarco Calles. Father Magallanes was a priest of humble origins similar to those of Calles, but Magallanes walked a different path than the strongman. After working the land as a youth for his poor family, he entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1899. He then served faithfully as a chaplain and as a pastor to the Huichole Indians for many years. By middle age, he was a priest of some stature. But the otherwise ordinary arc of his life took an extraordinary turn when, on May 21, 1927, he was on his way to celebrate the Feast of St. Rita of Cascia (May 22) in a small village. A shootout between Cristeros and Federal forces near the village led to Father Magallanes' arrest, along with a brother priest, Father Caloca. There were no accusations and no trial. There was neither the presentation of evidence nor the right of defense, since priests had no civil rights in Mexico at the time. On May 25, 1927, the two priests were led to the courtyard of a municipal building for what always happened next. Father Magallanes stated: “I am innocent and die innocent. I absolve with all my heart those who seek my death and ask God that my blood bring peace to a divided Mexico.” The priests absolved each other, spoke some few words of comfort, and then were shot to death by a firing squad of fellow Mexicans in soldiers' uniforms. Father Caloca's last words were: “For God we lived and for Him we die.” Twenty-five martyrs are commemorated today. All were diocesan priests, except for three laymen who died with their parish priest. They died in eight different Mexican states under circumstances similar to those of Frs. Magallanes and Caloca. One was hung from a mango tree in a town square, another from an oak in the country; one was shot for not revealing the confessions of his co-prisoners, one was bayoneted and beaten to death; one was shot and his body placed on railroad tracks to be mutilated by a train. The executioner of one priest refused to fire his rifle. He was shot right after the priest. Pope Saint John Paul II beatified the group in 1992 and canonized them in 2000. In addition to Frs. Magallanes (Cristóbal Magallanes Jara) and Caloca (Agustín Caloca Cortés), these martyrs were: Román Adame Rosales, Rodrigo Aguilar Alemán, Julio Álvarez Mendoza, Luis Batis Sáinz, Mateo Correa Magallanes, Atilano Cruz Alvarado, Miguel De La Mora, Pedro Esqueda Ramírez, Margarito Flores Garcia, José Isabel Flores Varela, David Galván Bermúdez, Salvador Lara Puente (layman), Pedro de Jesús Maldonado Lucero, Jesús Méndez Montoya, Manuel Morales (layman), Justino Orona Madrigal, Sabás Reyes Salazar, José María Robles Hurtado, David Roldán Lara (layman),Toribio Romo González, Jenaro Sánchez Delgadillo, David Uribe Velasco, and Tranquilino Ubiarco Robles. Father Magallanes, your quiet witness and noble death are an inspiration to all who suffer physical violence for the faith in unknown ways and in unknown places. May your intercession and courage be an inspiration for all priests, laymen, and religious who are tempted to bend in the winds of persecution.

Sermons from Saint Christopher's By-the-Sea, Portland Texas

On July 4th, our Independence Day, Saint Christopher's welcomed the Rev'd Dexter Lesieur, the Vicar of Devine, as our guest preacher for the day. Father Dexter took his text from Matthew 5, beginning in verse 43. Due to a slight technical difficulty, the first sentence or two of his sermon did not get recorded. However, the rest of the sermon does, indeed, remain intact.

They offend God and then take the Sacred Heart month to celebrate their rebellion.  FROM THE CHATROOM: Mike, we should stop calling the gay flag the "rainbow flag"  It is factually NOT since it only has 6 colors in it whereas God's Rainbow has 7 colors!.  We should call it the "Sodomy Flag" just like you say "BullPence"  Or maybe the "groomer flag, or Pervert Flag, deviant flag, or the anal flag etc just not the Rainbow flag. Brother doesn't allow his students to say the work suck - so one of his students didn't do well on a test and he wrote in the margin “This test vacuums.”  Our Lady of Prompt Succor -  QUESTION IN CHATROOM: Can Brother confirm or deny my idea that if a saint has made it to the calendar, they are assuredly real and in heaven? The modern calendar removed Saint Christopher but that doesn't mean St Christopher isn't a saint anymore. They are according to Canonical law owned by the Church. Georgetown, Holy Cross -  They took down the Crucifix when Obama spoke at BC When the Provost invited Obama in 2009 - there were 120 Notre Dame graduates that refused to walk. HEADLINE: The Visitation and the Personhood of the Unborn by John M. Grondelski  HEADLINE: Defeminisation by Frank Wright  From The Article: How feminine is feminism? It cannot and does not defend the most basic facts of womanhood. It is a movement destroying itself over the colonisation of the female by men, which it promotes. The fact that feminism is promoting the replacement of women by men is both astonishing and illustrative of the endpoint of Liberal individualism. This leads in all cases to strange paradoxes which destroy meaningful categories in the service of some extreme identity group. Black identity is about whiteness, rainbow rights are about the attitudes of normal people, feminism is about men. Chaos only entered into the world w/ free will sin. Man by sheer force of will has to impose his will. Fundamentally antithetical to Christian society. May 21: Saint Christopher Magallanes, Priest and Martyr, and Companions, MartyrsFr. Magallanes: 1869–1927; 22 priests and 3 laymen: 1915-1937, the majority killed between 1926-1929Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: RedA Mexican bloodlettingThe governor of Mexico's Tabasco state in the 1920s, Garrido Canabal, was so insanely anti-Catholic that he named his three sons Lenin, Satan, and Lucifer. Central Mexico was in a full-blown meltdown in the 1920s.For a visitor to Mexico today, or to anyone familiar with its culture, such events are difficult to imagine or comprehend. Mexico harbors one of the most vibrant Catholic cultures in the entire world, thick with devotions, processions, Masses, feast day celebrations, and religious song and dress. Yet the Cristero War did happen, and not a thousand years ago.The militant, anti-religious mentality of Anglo-Saxon secular humanism is familiar to many believers today. No courtrooms are needed.Today's saint, and the others canonized with him, were caught in the storm that was Plutarco Calles. Father Caloca's last words were: “For God we lived and for Him we die.”Twenty-five martyrs are commemorated today. Magallanes (Cristóbal Magallanes Jara) and Caloca (Agustín Caloca Cortés), these martyrs were: Román Adame Rosales, Rodrigo Aguilar Alemán, Julio Álvarez Mendoza, Luis Batis Sáinz, Mateo Correa Magallanes, Atilano Cruz Alvarado, Miguel De La Mora, Pedro Esqueda Ramírez, Margarito Flores Garcia, José Isabel Flores Varela, David Galván Bermúdez, Salvador Lara Puente (layman), Pedro de Jesús Maldonado Lucero, Jesús Méndez Montoya, Manuel Morales (layman), Justino Orona Madrigal, Sabás Reyes Salazar, José María Robles Hurtado, David Roldán Lara (layman),Toribio Romo González, Jenaro Sánchez Delgadillo, David Uribe Velasco, and Tranquilino Ubiarco Robles.Father Magallanes, your quiet witness and noble death are an inspiration to all who suffer physical violence for the faith in unknown ways and in unknown places. May your intercession and courage be an inspiration for all priests, laymen, and religious who are tempted to bend in the winds of persecution.

On Christmas Eve, we remember the story of the Birth of Jesus, the angels singing to the shepherds, of Mary and Joseph unable to find room in the inn. It is a story that we all know rather well. Tonight's sermon, preached by Father Blackburn, asks us to consider the message of the angels to the Shepherds, and who it is that we celebrate this night. The Scripture references that Father Blackburn uses for this sermon are Luke 2:1-20, Isaiah 9:2-7 and Titus 2:11-14. On behalf of the Clergy, Vestry and Parish of Saint Christopher's, we wish you all a very happy Christmastide.

This sermon was delivered on Thanksgiving Day, 2021 during a service of Holy Communion. Father Blackburn preaches on the theme that someone who is truly thankful shows it not only by saying "thank you", but by living into thankfulness. The phrase "Thanks-living" comes from one of his former professors, the Rev'd Dr. Terry York, who has been a guest in the pulpit at Saint Christopher's earlier this year. On behalf of the Clergy and Vestry of Saint Christopher's, we wish everyone a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving Day.

Jesus and his disciples have come into Jerusalem for the Passover Festival, and the disciples are in awe of the Temple Structure and Complex. As they are looking around, Jesus gives a prediction and prophecy concerning the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. In the life of Saint Christopher's Parish, we are living on the other side of a traumatic event that occurred 35 years ago. How can we take hope, and how can we be stewards, and how can we express gratitude to God and the Lamb as we live on this side of our own Temple Destruction. Father Blackburn is the preacher and the text is Mark 13:1-8.

He's the patron saint of athletics, traveller, journeys and transportation in general, epilepsy, the city of Havana in Cuba, and of bachelors. His legend inspired a fashion craze with surfers in the late 1950s, and he is famously known for carrying an unbelievably heavy child across a wide river who turns out to be Jesus in disguise. Most unusually, this saint is often depicted with a dog's head.

It seemed that way until the summer of '86. The old folks always whispered about certain places—about the places you don't go and the boogeymen that dwelled within. Everyone in Fagan County knew a local ghost story. Back then, I loved to hear those stories. Nowadays, not so much.  My dad trucked crops from the farms into the neighboring states of Louisiana and Mississippi. I didn't see much of him. He left before dawn and got home after sunset. The day before my thirteenth birthday, he took a load to Shreveport. I awoke to a stack of used horror comics the next morning with a note that read “You're old enough for the good ones now, soldier.” I loved the way those pages smelled. After all these years, I still have a couple of them in the suitcases I live out of. I'd read through the entire bundle in a week. I flipped through them and found the one I'd enjoyed the most for a second visit when my mother called from downstairs. “Connie! Come quick,” she shouted. I hated when she called me that. It was bad enough being named Conrad. The effeminate nickname caught on with my friends in second grade… and then with the rest of the student body by the end of recess. Something sounded off in her voice as I trudged down the narrow staircase that descended into the kitchen. Mom was sitting at the table with her elbows pressing into the vinyl top and her hands hiding her face. My sister, Lisa, had her head down, shrouded in her arms. Her body convulsed as she bawled noisily inside. I held my breath all the way to the table. No one spoke to me as I slid the chair away from the edge and eased into it. Mom reached over and put her hand on mine. “Something terrible's happened,” she whispered. Something terrible had happened a few weeks ago, too. And a few weeks before that. We'd discussed both of those events as a family. No one was crying then. Sure, Mom had been shaken up by the discovery of the first body, but it seemed like nothing to worry about.  We all knew Old Man McGarrah from around town. He would pop out like a magician's rabbit to grump about what a bunch of slack-jawed hippy-spawn all the kids were whenever you least expected it. The police said it was a heart attack that took him and that coyotes took to eating his remains. Grotesque and unseemly as it were, my folks delivered the news to my sister and me with just the facts and reminded us to stay away from the woods. Coyotes rarely attacked people, but Dad said there's something different about any animal—including man—once they got a taste for blood. The second time we were called to the table, it was clearly more bothersome. Mom wasn't handling it well, but she remained calm as she told us about the bodies found out along County Road 63. A couple of teens gone to make out got cut up real bad. Chief Hardesty said it was just a freak occurrence—a crime of opportunity—and that the killer was likely long gone. Our parents told us to be home thirty minutes before sundown after that and to never go anywhere alone, just in case. This time was different. “Connie,” she started, tugging at the silver locket dangling from her thin neck. Her voice trembled. “It's Brenda.” My stomach knotted. Brenda Knowles had been Lisa's best friend since kindergarten. She'd babysat for me on a few occasions and came to eat dinner with us every Wednesday. She was my first crush too. I sniffled, but held back any other reaction until Mom could finish. Maybe it wasn't what I thought. Maybe those old Tales from the Crypt comics were poisoning my imagination the way Father Dean said they would at youth service. Maybe she was moving away. That would explain why they were so upset.  “Chief Hardesty found her this morning,” Mom continued. Nope. It was exactly what I thought it was. I don't remember the exact moment that I realized the killings were a month apart, but I do remember Lisa raising her face to stare at Mom and then me in turn. Her lips quivered and then she stood up fast enough to knock the chair to the floor. She slammed her fists onto the table and screamed. That I'll never forget. That look… and those words. “She was eaten!” Lisa cried until she passed out that night. I watched the news with Mom to see if the police had anything to say. The station's newest reporter, Rex Willits, looked like he'd been sick as he raised the microphone close to his chin. His hand shook slightly and his trademark smile was nothing but a thin line of white teeth below his bushy mustache. Rex nodded slowly and started his report when the phone rang in the kitchen and Mom went to answer. “I'm here at the Ridley Funeral Home in Fagan County to report on a grisly, unimaginable crime,” Rex started. He swallowed hard. “The body of fifteen-year-old Brenda Knowles was found just before dawn this morning. Brenda had been babysitting for family friends the prior evening. She started the short walk to her home just before eleven pm.” I turned my attention to Mom's shouting in the kitchen. “What do you mean ‘two days,' Paul?” she growled. “It doesn't take two damn days to get a mechanic.” Dad's truck broke down. That happened a lot when he was hauling rice to Shreveport. Only then, though. Mom noticed too. She had a pretty good idea of what was going on. “What about the kids?” she wailed. “You know what's going on here! You're leaving us alone so you—” Her voice became muffled and I scooted closer to the television to hear what Rex had to say. I heard the phone slam against the receiver several times and Mom stomping up the steps. “I've seen the body… my God in Heaven, I'll never unsee it now,” Rex said when movement caught his attention.  He snapped his fingers and pointed his cameraman in the direction of the police chief. Other reporters rushed in around him. Rex elbowed one of them out of his way and reached out with his mic. “Don't you buzzards have anything better to do?” Chief Hardesty barked. “A child is dead for Christ's sake.” “How?” Rex asked. “How did she die?” “Violently,” Hardesty answered in his low, gruff drawl. “Is this related to last month's double homicide?” a woman's voice asked. “We don't have conclusive evidence linking the two, this early in the investigation,” Hardesty said. His shoulders sagged. “There are… similarities.” “Were the other victims missing flesh and muscle?” Rex quizzed him. “Were there bite marks on them as well?” Hardesty glared at Rex and then spoke with forced restraint. “At this time, I'm asking all residents of Whistler and the outlying areas to stay indoors at night. The curfew is merely a request, however.” The wail of sirens cut the report short. We wouldn't find out until the morning that they'd found another body. Crazy Delores lived in a shack on the edge of town. She sold herbal remedies and told fortunes for a dollar. No one knew how long she'd been dead. I climbed into bed, but didn't dare go to sleep. I opened a comic and thought about Dad. Maybe the rig really broke down, but I didn't buy it. He was spending time with some woman. In a strange way, that made me feel better. He was more worried about getting laid than he was about the killer on the loose, so maybe it wasn't a big deal. My door creaked open and Lisa slipped through the gap. I laid the comic down. I didn't know what to say. ‘Sorry your best friend was brutally murdered and partially eaten' really didn't seem like it'd help the situation. Then again, ‘we're going to find Brenda's killers' wasn't a winner either, but that's exactly what Lisa said as she leaned on my dresser. I gawked at her and waited what felt like an eternity for her to say something else. “Look, Connie,” she started, then paused and chewed her bottom lip. “Chief Hardesty is a scumbag. He's going to pin all this on the first person that ain't Baptist enough for him. Then the murderer is just going to drift away.” I was still too young to know how common that sort of thing was around there. Or what kind of a man Baxter Hardesty really was. I did want to make sure that Brenda's killer got caught, however. “The killings are about a month a part,” I said, hesitantly, unsure of exactly what I'd discovered. I shrugged. “What if the killer travels and just stops through here every few weeks?” “Or lives here and returns home once a month?” Lisa offered. “Dad's friend, Ted, is a long-haul driver.” I remembered. Ted tried to convince Dad to work with him all the time. I also remembered Ted coming to my birthday party. I shook my head. “I'm pretty sure he's out of town now.” I scratched the two recently sprouted hairs on my chin. “What about a delivery driver? Brown's only gets a few deliveries a month.” Lisa thought it over and nodded. “Okay, we'll go by and see when they got a delivery.” Thinking the conversation was done, I lifted my comic. “What is that, Connie?” Lisa asked, shakily. “What are you reading?” I closed the issue and looked down at the cover. Bright yellow eyes stared up at me above fangs dripping blood over a broken skull. I looked up to my sister. I knew what she was thinking and I wanted to tell her she was stupid. I wanted to, but I didn't. The same thought hit me when I looked at those fierce yellow orbs on the black cover. My stomach pitched as I thought about the recent events. My eyes left the stare of the beast and met my sister's. “It's a werewolf,” I finally said. We tried to put the notion back into our imaginations—where werewolves were supposed to stay. Lisa and I rode our bikes to Brown's General Store just past noon. The curfew officially started at sundown and was no longer a request. Not that it mattered. The streets were already deserted.  The baseball card sputtering in the bike spokes signaled the arrival of Brad Breaker. Brad was between Lisa and myself in age, so he hung out with both of us. He was the definition of cool with his acid-washed jeans and his torn, mid-riff, Bruce Springsteen t-shirt. Brad could play guitar… and football. He was also muscular, with aquiline features and sandy blonde hair that made him look like Patrick Swayze in Red Dawn and made Lisa's brain stop working. “My mom spazzed when I said I was leaving.” Brad looked at the grocery store and turned back to us. “But you said it was an emergency.” “You won't get in trouble, will you?” Lisa asked. “Nah.” Brad shrugged. “My old man said experience builds character… and that I need to bring back more Folgers.” “Lucky this is our first stop,” I said. “So, why are we here?” Lisa looked to me. Telling him our theory would have been the right thing to do, but she thought he was cute and hoped I, being closer to the childish age to believe such things, would do it for her. I did not. “We want to find Brenda's killer,” I said and waved at the street. “Everyone's scared to death. We want to help.” “Why?” Brad asked. “I mean, why do you think you can do it faster than the police?” I removed the wrinkled, somewhat-neatly folded newspaper clippings and handed them to him. “Mister McGarrah died and his corpse was eaten by coyotes. That's what they say, anyhow. There's been a killing, at the same time, every month since. Each of those victims was partially eaten as well,” I said, rattling off the facts as quickly as I could. “I think the killer comes to town once a month.” “We think the murderer might be a delivery person or truck driver. So, we want to ask the Browns if they've gotten any shipments this week,” Lisa added. “Gnarly.” Brad nodded slowly. “Let's get to work.” The Browns deliveries turned up bupkis. We checked with every business in town for the same results. That theory was as dead as Brenda, which left us with only one other possibility. A quarter till seven, we stopped by the ice cream shoppe and got sundaes for a quick sugar rush before dinner. I debated sharing the werewolf idea. I'd been trying to dismantle it as we asked around. If it was a werewolf, why'd the killings start only recently? Was anyone acting differently around town? Was anyone new? What made someone a werewolf? So many questions, but none of them ruled out the possibility. “What if… it's stupid.” Brad said, staring up at the now full moon. “What if it's a werewolf?” Lisa choked and stared at me wide-eyed over puffed cheeks full of banana split. “I mean, my pops tells me to stay away from Snyder Creek because some kids died back in the '20s. Everyone says that was a monster. Why couldn't this be one?” “Darn it!” I snapped my fingers and scooted my chair back with a screech of steel feet against the sidewalk. “Why didn't I think of that?” “Think of what?” Lisa asked. “I've heard that story too,” I answered. “The Snyder Creek Ghoul. They never found out what really happened. Lisa, we need to go to the library and see if we can find any old papers about that.” “Not a chance, Connie.” She pointed at the sherbet skyline. “We need to get home before dark. It's a long ride.” “The library's probably already closed, anyway,” Brad offered. “The cops are never going to believe us,” Lisa said. “After tonight, he'll just be a man,” I reassured her. “We'll have a month to find out who the werewolf is and prove it.” “Crap!” Brad let his head hang. “Most non-triumphant.” “What?” Lisa and I asked in unison. “I forgot the coffee.” He put a foot on a pedal. “I'm going to hustle to Brown's. See you later.” He wouldn't. Brad's body wasn't found for six days. Worst of all, strange as it sounds to say it like a bad thing, he didn't get eaten. It would be a while before Lisa drew a startling conclusion from the fact. The curfew started an hour earlier afterwards. A citizen's patrol was organized as well. It wasn't much more than a dozen yokels with spotlights and guns driving the paved roads, however. They wouldn't go down the miles of gravel paths where there weren't any streetlights to keep them safe. They didn't find the werewolf, either. All they accomplished was shooting a drifter who was busking at the Crispy Chi'ken Truck Stop. Chief Hardesty tried to pin the murders on that poor soul, like Lisa had suspected he would. No one was buying it. By that point, Dad had decided that between the new woman and a monster running roughshod back home, he had all the reason he needed to move to Louisiana. He came while we were asleep to collect his things. We spent every day tracking down information and investigating whatever absurd idea came to us. It was two nights before the next full moon when Lisa told me her troublesome theory. “He didn't eat Brad because he was warning us,” she said, somberly across the table. The local library had few books on lycanthropy. We'd been reading them every night and comparing them to the two clippings we had from 1926 when the Snyder Creek Ghoul had struck. I put the piece of paper I was using as a bookmark between the pages of the tome and closed it. “What do you mean?” I whispered. “We were asking around about delivery schedules, about people from out of town.” She shook her head. “The wolf isn't a stranger. We know him and he heard us asking. He wants us to leave him alone.” I checked my watch and reached under the table, wrestling with the zipper of my fanny pack. “Then he shouldn't have killed our friends,” I growled.  I pulled my prize and set it where Lisa could see with a heavy thump. Her eyes widened at the sight of cold, blue steel. “Dad forgot it when he packed,” I told her and lifted the Saint Christopher medallion our aunt had given me for my birthday. “I've got this and six silver dollars. We can make two or three bullets with that.” “We don't know how to make bullets.” “Otto Dickens does,” I pointed out. “We have time to get to his store and back home if we go right now.” “We're not hunting the damn thing, Connie!” Lisa stood quickly and looked around at the mostly empty library. She lowered her voice. “We should stop this.” “If he killed Brad to scare us off, then he knows who we are. We need the bullets regardless.” Her face twisted with contempt. She knew I was right and scooped her backpack before heading to the exit. We rode our bikes to the fork in the road—left to our house or right to Otto Dickens' gun shop. Lisa didn't speak as she leaned and pulled her Schwinn down the righthand street. I smiled softly and followed. Most families in Whistler had lived no further away than the county line for generations. Otto just seemed to appear one day. Despite what you might've heard about southern hospitality, it doesn't apply to strangers. Otto had an uncanny ability with firearms, however. Small towns of rural Arkansas might've hated strangers, but they certainly loved their guns. Otto was soon a welcomed member of the community and set up a shop on the far side of town, a couple miles past the old cemetery. The tarnished bell over the door announced our arrival with whatever-the-hell a bell's version of smoker's cough is. Otto looked up from the reloading station, his face twisted with curiosity as two teens entered his tiny store. A long scar parted his wild, white beard on the left side of his face. He held up the cartridge he was working on between his thumb and index finger. “Best goddamn rifle round in history,” he said in a voice that sent a shiver racing up my spine. “Forty-five-seventy. I kept a chopped down Winchester in this caliber for clearing tunnels. Can't hear much of shit anymore as a result, but it could turn old Victor Charlie inside-out in those confined spaces. You ever shot a man?” Lisa and I exchanged bewildered glances. How many kids could say ‘yes'? “Didn't think so.” Otto deposited the finished cartridge into the cardboard box beside him. “Well, what can I help you with then? Too early for hunting.” “Not what we're hunting,” I said. Lisa elbowed me in the ribs and cleared her throat. “You can make bullets, right?” “Reckon I can.” Lisa held out her hand and I gave her the items from my fanny pack. Otto left his stool and prowled to her. He bounced the coins and pendant in his palm. His amber eyes darted from one of us to the other before he snorted. “You want silver bullets.” He set the materials on his counter and shook his head. “That's a shit idea. Silver's too dense. It won't take the rifling. Unless you plan on shooting a barn, you won't be hitting nothing from more than a few feet. Muzzle velocity will nosedive too because the round is heavier than your powder load. They won't mushroom either. They'll go clean in and out. Shotshells. That's what you need if you're looking to use silver.” Lisa looked at me, completely lost in the gunsmith's lesson in ballistic science. I didn't understand it either. “We don't have a shotgun,” I finally said. “We have a Chief's Special .38.” “A snub-nose shooting silver bullets?” Otto burst with boisterous laughter. “Hell, you kids might as well slather yourselves in barbeque sauce and yell ‘here, puppy' if you plan on fighting a werewolf with that set up.” My jaw fell open and I quickly glanced to my sister to find her in the same state. Otto put a hand on each of our shoulders. I hadn't noticed before, but three of his fingers were missing from the one resting on me. He hunkered slightly to look us in the eyes. “Don't look so surprised. Ain't much else you could be doing with silver bullets.”  He went behind the counter and pulled a sawed-off shotgun from beneath the register. My eyes drifted to the black tape wrapped around the walnut stock and the rough scratches where a serial number had been. “Reckon you can borrow this one. Going to take about an hour on the shells.” “You believe us?” I asked. “Lots of things in this world we pretend not to believe in no more. Pretend weren't real in the first place.” He absently rubbed the scar on his cheek with the nubs of his fingers. “We pretend… until they start eating us.” The sun was just an orange razor's slash by the time we got home. We dropped our bikes in the yard and ran inside. The shotgun mostly fit inside Lisa's backpack, so we could sneak it past Mom. Not that it mattered. All the lights were off and she wasn't waiting for us like normal. I headed for the living room while she stashed the gun and changed clothes. “How are you, soldier?” a gruff, ragged voice asked from a darkened corner. The hairs prickled on the back of my neck at my dad's pet name for me. He stepped out of the shadows. He looked different, and naked, as he gracefully scaled the back of the couch and perched on the cushion. The weak glow of the mail-order touch lamps shimmered on the sweat-slick hairs growing longer from his tight flesh. His elongated nails scratched at the thick, orange fabric of the sofa. “You can catch a lot from whores,” he said.  He spoke slowly, like each word was new to him. Long strands of drool slung from his mouth as he flexed his jaw with a series of loud, painful pops. “Your ma knew. Tried to fix it with Crazy Delores.”  His obsidian eyes focused on the coffee table. I saw Mom's locket sitting there next to the half-full ashtray, still wet with blood.  “It's not just the bite,” he grumbled, his words becoming deeper and more inhuman. “It's like the clap. I brought it home. Made her. McGarrah was… accident.” He shifted on the cushions. Things moved inside his body—bones and muscles realigning—and he whined like a dog in a sticker bush. He sprang over the table and landed inches from me. His nose twitched as he took in my scent. His lips didn't touch anymore as the fangs locked together. Stiff fur covered his once chubby cheeks. “She couldn't… control.” He growled. His teeth snapped in front of me. “I can. Join… pack… become. Come with me… soldier.” I quivered with fear. With hurt. With anger. I never suspected my parents. I needed answers. Lisa screamed and broke me out of his hypnotic gaze. His hand clamped over my mouth. He watched the stairs, waiting for Lisa to come down. I eased my hand to the fanny pack, wiggling my fingers to stretch the zipper without the noise. “Connie?” Lisa called. Dad sniffed the air. I watched his pointed ear twitch. He whipped his head back around to me and his eyes widened as the barrel pressed against his chest. The .38 was louder than I remembered. The bullets weren't silver, but they did the trick. He fell backwards and crashed through the table. I fired the rest of them into his face while he was down. He screamed in pain behind me while I darted for the stairs. I slammed into Lisa who was clutching the shotgun. “I think there's two of them!” she shouted. I wasn't listening. I jerked the weapon from her hands and went to finish Dad off. Only, he wasn't there.  Two bloody bullets rolled in the debris of the coffee table. A shadow fell over me from the kitchen. I threw myself to the floor, narrowly dodging the swipe of my father's claws. I rolled onto my back and he looked more monstrous than before. His face had contorted into a snout. The front window shattered, startling me. My finger tensed on the trigger and the silver buckshot tore through Dad's thigh, obliterating the wood paneling beyond. I clamored up the stairs and Lisa pulled me to my feet by my collar. We ran into our parent's room and slammed the door behind us. I screamed when I saw the body on the bed. It was Mom… but just barely. Her features were still deformed. Her body, still covered in the bristly fur of her new form. And her head hung from the gnawed throat by a few remaining strands of muscle. Everything Dad tried to tell me suddenly made sense. His new girlfriend turned him and he turned Mom. That's how the werewolf knew we were snooping. Mom was doing the killing while Dad joined his new pack in Louisiana. I vomited at the foot of the bed. “What's happening?” Lisa asked. Downstairs sounded like a dogfight. Snarls, yips of pain, furious barks, things breaking. I threw the door open and whipped around the corner with the shotgun raised and ready. Dad pounced onto the stairs. Blood gushed from wounds and he bared his fangs as he crawled up the steps toward me. I pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. I remembered duck hunting with him and then my own folly. I hadn't chambered another round. He drew closer as I racked the slide, but it was too late. His claws opened deep furrows in my thigh and I toppled backwards. Then the other wolf came into view. It grabbed my father's legs and pulled him down the steps before mounting his back. The beast howled victoriously and glared at me with amber eyes set in white fur.  The monster clamped its fully formed jaws down on the back of Dad's neck. I heard the wet snap of the spine as it shook its head from side to side. I stared at the long scar parting its fur, at the claws digging into its prey… and the missing fingers beside them. I pressed the barrel of the shotgun to the back of my father's skull and fired. The white wolf slunk away. Brain matter and pieces of skull clung to its fur. I pumped the shotgun again. And then the beast was gone. By morning, the bodies had fully reverted to their human forms. Chief Hardesty didn't question anything. Dad was the killer and Mom was just a victim. We let him run with that story. Before our aunt could come and pick us up, we needed to take care of one more thing. We rode our bikes to Otto Dickens' shop and found him assembling a pistol at his counter. “Reckon the police seized that gun,” he said, simply. “Yeah,” I answered. “Sorry, I guess.” I set my mother's locket on the counter and looked at the gunsmith questioningly. “Wolfsbane.” He licked his lips. “It helps when you're young, when the moon is still your master.” He finished the pistol he was working on and slipped it into a messenger bag. He pushed the kit over to me. “I haven't killed anyone in a long time, in case you're wondering,” he told us.  “What do we do now?” Lisa asked. “Different breeds of wolf, the world over. My kind don't have a pack here.” He pointed at the gauze around my leg. “Your old man's kind does. You took from them. They'll take from you. A wolf never forgets. You're just rabbits now and there's nothing left to do for a scared bunny, but to run.” We took the bag Otto prepared for us and left his shop. We didn't go back to the house and wait for our aunt, though. We rode our bikes to the outskirts of Fagan County and hitched a ride at the Crispy Chi'ken. They caught up with us in St Louis three years later. I buried Lisa behind a city park. I rest in one place until I hear the bays of the pack on those bright, moonlit nights and then I disappear onto another stretch of asphalt. Always moving. Always staying ahead of the wolves. Always ready to remind them, that rabbits have teeth too. We also talk about Chris's new album, the inspiration for the album, his new relationship with Rusty Knuckle Records. St Christopher On the 2nd day of the Coptic month of Baramouda we celebrate the life of Saint Christopher.Christopher was known to be unsightly and a giant of a man, but the soul of a good and gentle man. During the reign of Emperor Decius, Christopher had been captured by imperial soldiers. Christopher admonished them for their ill treatment of Christians. Their captain beat him severely in response to this admonishment. “If it was not for the command of Christ,” Christopher boldly stated. “Which teaches me not to do unto others what they do unto us; you and your soldiers could not be delivered from my hands.”When Decius heard of the courage of this single man, he dispatched two hundred soldiers to bring him in. With Christopher in tow, and on their way back to the Emperor, they ran out of bread, except for a very small portion. Christopher prayed and God blessed that little portion into an abundance of bread. The soldiers marvelled and believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, the God of Christopher. Upon returning to Antioch, the soldiers were baptized by the hands of Pope Paul the Patriarch.Eventually Christopher was brought forth before the Emperor and Decius trembled in fear at the appearance of this hulking man. But that imperial snake tried to charm, persuade and deceive Christopher into denying his faith in Christ. Bringing forth two attractive women to try and seduce Christopher. But to the dismay of Decius, Christopher brought the women to Christ and they proclaimed their faith before the Emperor. Enarged, he had their heads cut off - and they received the crown of martyrdom. The emperor had Christopher put into a boiling hot cauldron, but Christopher was unharmed. The people witnessing this event, believed in the power of Christian faith and believed in Jesus Christ. Disgusted by his attempts to tame the rise of Christianity even in his own court, the Emperor Decius ordered a heavy stone be tied around the giant’s neck and then have him thrown into a pit. But the angel of the Lord took him out of the pit safely. Finally the Emperor has his head cut off, and Christopher received the crown of martyrdom.Lessons from this storyChristopher, or in Greek “Christophorus” means “bearing Christ.” The story you have heard is the Coptic telling of Christopher’s martyrdom in the name Jesus Christ. But there is a Catholic telling of this same saint, that has elements important to his reference as the “patron saint of travellers”.Because of his size, he worked along a river, helping travellers to cross a sometimes roaring river. He had long been brought to Christ by a hermit who taught him about the King of Kings. As the legend goes, Christopher was asked to help a small boy to cross the river. Christopher obliged. However, as he approached midstream, the river rose and the child's weight grew, becoming extremely heavy. It was only by great exertion that Christopher safely delivered the child to the other side. When Christopher asked the child why he was so heavy, the child explained that He was Christ and when Christopher carried Him, he also carried the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. The child then vanished. This telling of his story has passed down from many, many generations. There have been some debate about his past, but his sainthood has never been questioned.God knows the truth. Not just about Christopher, but about you and me. He knows intimately, even better than we know ourselves. How many times have you done something that someone else got the credit for your effort or idea? This has probably happened more than once in your life. But God knows the truth. In the telling of Saint Christopher’s time of martyrdom, it was not his hulking strength that ultimately saved him, but his faith. Do not burden yourself with the credit deserved, for your credit is always good and safe with God.PrayerMay the prayers and intercessions of St Christopher be with us all, amen.

I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! This week, I have a special guest, Sofia Boettner, with Group La Palapa will be talking about their beautiful property, La Troza Beach Resort, south of Puerto Vallarta, actually just north of Playa Las Animas, but before we get to that conversation, let’s see what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, November 29, 2017. Last week I promised you I would talk about the Pilgrimage, the 12-day pilgrimage of our Lady de Guadalupe. The one that is going to be celebrated in Puerto Vallarta for 13 days this. Well, in Puerto Vallarta, there is this beautiful church and it serves as an icon. It is part and parcel of the landscape and the center of all the tourist brochures, everyone wants a picture of the church, the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe.  And because of its name, and dedication to the Lady of Guadalupe, it has been one of the places in Mexico, besides the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, where the faithful make the pilgrimage to honor this occasion, this event that changed Mexico, and entwined Mexico with the Catholic Church. I want to tell you about the history of the church in Puerto Vallarta, the Iglesias de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, but before that, let me give you a little history and let me tell you the story of the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the story of Juan Diego. Just keep in mind that 10 years earlier, Hernando Cortez had just conquered Mexico City and just defeated Montezuma. And in 1523 Franciscan missionaries came ‘a evangelizing the Indian people who were living there. And, they were really good at it too and an Archdiocese of Mexico City was established in 1528. Now Juan Diego and many of his family members were among the early native Indian converts to Catholicism. He was baptized Juan Diego. He was given that name by the church. His name was some other Indian name that I cannot pronounce it I'm not even going to try it. [caption id="attachment_2023" align="alignleft" width="216"] Juan Diego[/caption] Juan Diego was baptized in 1525 along with his wife and his uncle. Now remember that Juan Diego had grown up under Aztec oppression, and the Aztecs were not really nice people. They would cut the hearts out of sacrifices while they were still alive. It was pretty gross this was a bloodthirsty civilization. It was said that over 50,000 human beings were sacrificed having their hearts cut out every year. In fact, just imagine back in 1487, before Cortez arrived when Juan Diego was just 13 years old he would have witnessed all this chaos and bloodthirsty behavior. It must have shocked the Spanish Conquistadores no end. In 1520 Cortes outlawed human sacrifice and he took the two idols out of the pyramids, cleansed the stone of all the blood, and erected a new altar. And then, Cortez along with his soldiers and father Olmedo then climb the stairs of the pyramid with the Holy Cross and images of the Virgin [caption id="attachment_2035" align="alignright" width="254"] Hernando Cortez[/caption] Mary and of Saint Christopher and upon this new altar Father Olmedo held a mass. Right there, in the place where all of those sacrifices had taken place, where all that bloodshed and tragic loss of life took place,  there took place, a Mass. A bloodless, deathless mass was held. But that didn't make the Aztecs very happy in fact it sparked all-out War. Once again Cortez had to subdue his enemy, and in August of 1521 a year later he finally was able to stop that fighting. So, now let's get back to the story of Juan Diego. Juan Diego was headed to mass and on the way to mass he would walk past Tepeyac Hill, on the outskirts of Mexico City.  And this one morning, in the early morning hours of December 9th 1531, this 57 year old Indian peasant was walking along and started to hear beautiful music and he saw a beautiful lady who called out his name. He came forward and she told him who she was. That she was the Virgin Mary the mother of Jesus, and she asked him to go to the bishop and ask the bishop to build a church right there at Tepeyac Hill, to honor her. Bishop Zumarraga was a nice guy, and when Juan Diego came to him he listened and said he would think about it. [caption id="attachment_2034" align="aligncenter" width="673"] Bishop Zumarraga[/caption] He probably didn't believe him of course and sent Juan Diego on his way. When Juan Diego went back past Tepeyac Hill and reported what the bishop had said Mary told him to try again. So the next day, although it was even harder because, well, the bishop made him wait a long, long, time. He told the bishop the story and asked him to build the church. This time the bishop said bring back a sign from Mary, to prove the story. On December 11th Juan Diego, instead of going back, was caring for his really sick uncle and his uncle asked him to bring a priest to hear his confession and to administer his final rites. Then the following day, on December 12th as Juan Diego went out again but he was a little embarrassed, so he avoided Tepeyac Hill because he was embarrassed that he kinda ditched Mother Mary the day before you know, when he was caring for his uncle. But Mary, cut him off at the pass and says hey, don't worry it's okay. It's alright, you don't have to worry your uncle is going to be fine in fact his health has been restored now please just do as I ask. Now as for this sign for the Bishop, go to the top of the hill and pick some flowers. So, Juan Diego went to the top of the hill which was dry and covered with snow and cactus, and he actually found some beautiful roses that were not familiar to Juan Diego as they weren’t even native to Mexico and actually native to Spain. Juan Diego gathered the roses up in his sash he was wearing a like a poncho. They call it a tilma. Anyway, he brought the Roses back in his Poncho, in his tilma and Mary arranged them, and then rewrapped them up again handed it to him and said now take these back to the bishop. Tell him I want my Church. And so Juan Diego went back and waited even longer this time and finally when he had a chance and another audience with the bishop. He repeated the message and opened his tilma, and out spilled these roses. The bishop not only saw the flowers but also saw the image of Mary, Our Lady de Guadalupe which had been emblazoned upon the tilma upon this guy's poncho. [caption id="attachment_2036" align="aligncenter" width="528"] Lady of Guadalupe[/caption] Bishop Zumarraga fell to his knees and he asked for forgiveness for ever doubting Juan Diego, and then he took the tilma and he laid it on the altar of his chapel. By Christmas of that year an adobe structure was built on top of Tepeyac Hill in honor of our Blessed Mother Our Lady of Guadalupe and it was dedicated in December 26th, 1531 which is the feast of Saint Stephen the Martyr. When Juan Diego saw his uncle next, his uncle had indeed recovered, and told the story of how the virgin had appeared before him and made him well. So, December 9th marks the feast day of Saint Juan Diego and December 12th the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This event was very important in bringing more and more people, more and more of the Indians into the Catholic faith and it was the Tipping Point right then in the history of Catholicism and Mexico. [embed]https://youtu.be/h3srGgIMPX8[/embed] In Mexico City at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the faithful come from all over Mexico to make the pilgrimage to see the 400-year-old tilma, with the figure of the Virgin Mary, the Lady of Guadalupe emblazoned on it. They crawl on their knees to the basilica. At least some of them do. I have a video that shows how it’s celebrated in Mexico City, but to tell you a little about how it’s celebrated in Puerto Vallarta, I called my buddy Dee, from Poland Ohio, and Dee is as much of a Vallarta nut as I am. We met on the Trip Advisor Puerto Vallarta Forum page so we have never met in person, but following her adventures in Vallarta, I know that Dee is a believer and she loves this event, so I asked her to come on and tell us what happens during the 12 day Pilgrimage in Puerto Vallarta. So lets go to Poland Ohio and Talk with Dee. [caption id="attachment_1974" align="aligncenter" width="576"] Inglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe[/caption] Now La Iglesias de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta’s history started in the early twentieth century, The foundations of the church were started in 1903, but at the time there was already a small chapel there dedicated to Virgin Guadalupe. In 1915 father Francisco Ayala arrived and he suggested that a bigger temple than the one that had been designed, be built instead.. When Father Francisco Ayala arrived to the port in 1915, he suggested remodeling the building to resemble the design of the original Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The church was then officially promoted from a chapel to a parish. [embed]https://youtu.be/M5Ka_igVRp0[/embed] Construction stopped in 1926 during the Cristero War and resumed years after in 1929. Now I have to tell you about this War the Cristero War. I mean, I had never heard of it. Check this out…. It seems that the revolutionaries who took over after the Spanish were ousted were very distrustful of the clergy. They wrote in their constitutions limits and restrictions on the Catholic Church and religious freedoms. Most of the presidents, post-independence and revolution ignored these laws and limits, but The Plutarco Elías Calles administration (1924–28) felt its revolutionary initiatives and legal basis to pursue them were being challenged by the Catholic Church. To destroy the Church's influence over the Mexican people, anti-clerical laws were instituted, beginning a ten-year religious conflict that resulted in the death of thousands of armed civilians. On the opposing side was an armed professional military sponsored by the government. Calles’ Mexico has been characterized by some as an atheist state, and his program as being one to eradicate religion in Mexico. Calles applied the anti-clerical laws stringently throughout the country and added his own anti-clerical legislation. In June 1926 he signed the "Law for Reforming the Penal Code", known unofficially as the "Calles Law." This provided specific penalties for priests and individuals who violated the provisions of the 1917 Constitution. For instance, wearing clerical garb in public (i.e., outside Church buildings) earned a fine of 500 pesos ($250 U.S. per the historical exchange rate); a priest who criticized the government could be imprisoned for five years.  Some states enacted oppressive measures. Chihuahua enacted a law permitting only a single priest to serve the entire Catholic congregation of the state. To help enforce the law, Calles seized church property, expelled all foreign priests and closed the monasteries, convents and religious schools. The effects of the war on the Church were profound. Between 1926–34 at least 40 priests were killed. There were 4,500 priests serving the people before the rebellion, but by 1934 there were only 334 licensed by the government to serve 15 million people. The rest had been eliminated by emigration, expulsion and assassination. By 1935, 17 Mexican states had no priests at all. The rebellion eventually ended by diplomatic means brokered by U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Dwight Whitney Morrow, with financial relief and logistical assistance provided by the Knights of Columbus. On June 27, 1929, church bells rang in Mexico for the first time in almost three years. The war had claimed the lives of some 90,000 people: 56,882 on the federal side, 30,000 Cristeros, and numerous civilians and Cristeros who were killed in anti-clerical raids after the war ended. the Calles Law remained on After the resolution of hostilities, but no organized federal attempts to enforce it took place. Nonetheless, in several localities, officials continued persecution of Catholic priests based on their interpretation of the law. In 1992 the Mexican government amended the constitution by granting all religious groups legal status, conceding them limited property rights and lifting restrictions on the number of priests in the country. So how about that? Did you know about that war? Well I hadn’t. So back to the Inglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. By 1940 the entire building was finished, except the two towers. It wasn’t until 1963 that the symbol, the crown, that has given the city its identity and blessed it, was finally added. The original crown on the church was damaged by weather and erosion and was restored in 1981. On October 9th, 1995 it fell off and was destroyed by a strong earthquake in Colima. It was replaced with a temporary fiberglass model and since then has been replaced with a crown sculptured by the famous Jaliscan Artist, Carlos Terres. http://www.dermandar.com/p/bNyXHQ Church of the Lady of Guadalupe Facebook Page Website for La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta   Okay enough already, let’s get on with the show and get to our guest. It was Sofia Boettner, with Group La Palapa. Sofia [caption id="attachment_2025" align="alignright" width="225"] Sofia Boettner[/caption] was my first contact with La Palapa. I’ll leave it at that. You can all guess. At any rate, I heard back from Sofia right away about the song Samba de Puerto Vallarta, and she said that Mr. Perez said sure, I could use it as long as I gave credit to the artist, Him, and to his restaurant. So as you know, before each episode of the show I give a shout out to the Grupo La Palapa. My goal this week is to answer a question that I get pretty regularly: “Is Saint George still a saint?” Or “Is Saint Christopher still a saint?” Or “Is Saint Philomena still a saint?” As you know, these saints were removed from the liturgical calendar and so you quite often hear people claim that Saint George or Saint Christopher are no longer saints. We’re going to look at this question from a historical, liturgical and theological point of view. Oh, and don’t worry, I’ll definitely explain why George is depicted with a dragon and why would should take that seriously. So if you’ve wondered “What’s up that dragon?” this is the podcast for you. On my birthday, March 29, 2014, the email subscribers of my blog took a vote on our next free book. I offered several free books I’d be willing to write for you as a “thank you” for your encouragement. The winning title was Augustine in 50 Pages: A Quick Layman’s Guide to Augustinianism. You can see the various book options and how the voting broke down by clicking here. My goal was to finish researching and writing the book by the feast day of Saint Augustine on August 28, 2014. I worked hard on it and put the finishing touches on it on August 29. Do you know how hard it is to squeeze Augustine into 50 pages?  Please Listen Here: Your Voicemail about the Book Here’s a short 1 minute voicemail I recorded to you telling you about the book: Click here to listen to it: Taylor’s Voicemail to you about your free book. Here’s a photo of the final manuscript. Augustine in 50 Pages Table of Contents Here’s a sneak at the title page for the book: SAINT AUGUSTINE IN 50 PAGES title page.pdf When will you get this Free Book? The book is finished. But as you know, I am the royal king of typos (it’s a common theme in the comments box. My dad is dyslexic. Maybe I have a little bit of it.) So I need to get this Augustine manuscript professionally edited and cleaned up. Whenever that is finished, you’ll have this free book in your hands. Thomas Aquinas in 50 Pages will go into paperback version and will be available for purchase at amazon soon. If you still want a free copy of Thomas Aquinas in 50 Pages, sign up and get it here. Godspeed, Taylor Marshall PS: I shared this on Facebook, but I really felt that Saint Augustine was in the room with me when I wrote this book. It was a very supernatural sensation. The closest experience I’ve had as an author was writing The Catholic Perspective on Paul and my new fictional novel about Saint George, Saint Christopher, and Saint Nicholas (due after Thanksgiving). Question: Should the new title be SAINT Augustine in 50 Pages or just Augustine in 50 Pages? The reason I ask is that Thomas Aquinas in 50 Pages doesn’t have the “Saint” in front of it. You can leave a comment by clicking here. The post Taylor’s Voicemail about St Augustine in 50 Pages appeared first on Taylor Marshall.

My goal this week is to take a look at the Evangelical Protestant teaching “once saved always saved.” Once upon a time when I was an Evangelical, I believed in this teaching. It basically holds that once you have accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you can do nothing to lose it. Catholic Christians don’t believe this. So today we will look at the key Bible verses related to this teaching. It’s going to be fun!
