After that, skills can be acquired and built upon to teach people how to protect themselves further. However, we mustn't let our guard down when it comes to our brains and minds coming under attack. Like anti-virus software needing updates to protect against the latest cyber threats, our minds also require ongoing learning to maintain psychological security in addition to adequate rest, play, and sleep. I speak with the acclaimed psychiatrist and my mentor, Robert Jay Lifton, M.D., about his new book, Surviving Our Catastrophes: Resilience and Renewal from Hiroshima to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Lifton's research on thought reform and the psychology of totalism, specifically his study on “brainwashing” in China, has been widely regarded as groundbreaking. His book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism (1961) was used in my deprogramming. It was Lifton who encouraged my career which has spanned 47 years. In this new book, Lifton delves into “Survivor Power” and the transformation from victimhood to survivorship. He emphasizes the importance of drawing on the knowledge and wisdom gained from surviving traumatic experiences to continue living meaningful lives. The book takes inspiration from historical examples of survivors who have endured unimaginable suffering and trauma. Lifton highlights the remarkable responses of individuals who, in the face of unspeakable horror, have created activist movements, converted their experiences into art and literature, and demonstrated the resilience of the human spirit. From the people of Hiroshima, who responded to the atomic bombing by creating an activist “city of peace,” to the survivors of Nazi death camps who combated mass killing and showcased their healing through art and literature, these examples serve as beacons of hope. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 104 One of the most famous and most evil techniques of Maoist Marxism is the "struggle session" (dòuzhēng, 鬥爭; or pīpàn dòuzhēng, 批判鬥爭, “critical struggle”; or sometimes just pīdòu, 批鬥; also called “denunciation” sessions). They were made famous during Mao's Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), but they were utilized in the Chinese thought-reform (xǐnǎo, 洗脑, lit. "wash brain" or brainwashing) prisons starting in the early 1950s under the CCP. The nature of struggle sessions must be understood clearly in 2022 because Western nations are going through a "Woke" Maoist insurgency now, and the struggle session is all the way back in fashion (and has been for some time). Since being banned and returning to Twitter following Elon Musk's acquisition, host of the New Discourses Podcast, James Lindsay, has been subjected to a rather brutal online struggle session (a "twitter storm" as a harassment campaign) in the attempt to punish him back off the site and to discredit his highly effective popularization of the term "groomer" for Maoist ideological groomers, especially those using Queer Marxism. In this groundbreaking episode of the podcast, James goes through the struggle session he's currently experiencing while tying it to the psychological analysis of that phenomenon as presented in Robert Jay Lifton's book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of "Brainwashing" in China (https://amzn.to/3ulwEkf/). When you think of a cult, you might conjure some very specific imagery. Groups of people dressed in white, huddled around a charismatic, long-haired leader. Glasses of red fruit punch, mixed with other things, in the background. And a general sense of impending doom as the leader shares their celestial or holy visions with the crowd. This idea of a cult may have been popular in the 70s and 80s but the modern cult is more sophisticated, often choosing to weave cult-like practices into more acceptable industries such as self-help or entrepreneurship. In fact, you may be being influenced by cult indoctrination techniques right now, without even knowing it…but in order to talk about that, we first need to look at cults more generally and the practices that cause their followers to behave the way they do. From Jonestown to NXIVM, cults have caused massive damage to their victims and destroyed the lives of everyone they've come into contact with. So much so that, through various podcasts, documentaries, and exposes, they have become a pop culture phenomenon. A kind of lens for us to view the world from a slightly darker perspective. Inevitably, once the interest in cults hit, each of us asks the same questions…how did this happen? Why do these people fall for such obvious lies? Why do they follow someone who is often cruel to them? And why do they become cruel themselves? The answers to these questions can be found in the psychology of indoctrination. Indoctrination is defined as “the process of teaching a person or group to accept a set of beliefs uncritically.” YouTube: https://youtu.be/sIvnrvpwyuE Resources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thought_Reform_and_the_Psychology_of_Totalism https://www.verywellmind.com/understanding-and-using-the-law-of-attraction-3144808 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKqQ1CyneWw&ab_channel=FactFile

Spike joins Jon to break down a seminal model of thought control - Robert Jay Lifton's classic "eight deadly sins" - a list of behaviors and tactics used by authoritarian groups and abusive predators to gain control, whether in a spiritual or philosophical group, a multi-level marketing scheme, a dysfunctional family, or an entire nation. First laid out in Robert Jay Lifton's excellent book "Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism", these eight points can be found in some form in most authoritarian groups and abusive relationships of all kinds and sizes.

What exactly happened in this 6-day training…? Was it a training or was it a “self-help” style Large Group Awareness Training (LGAT) that serves as an indoctrination intensive. Did I even learn any yoga? "If it felt bad, why did you stay? Why did you fall for it?" Why did we drink the kool-aid? Did you think you were going for one thing - to learn to teach yoga or to deepen your practice - but you find yourself sharing deep personal trauma in a “hot seat” style questioning session that go on for hours draining your capacity to keep your critical thinking. Did you see red flags but were afraid to speak up because Baron singled out anyone who seemed to not participate and because you had no time to process by yourself or with others because you were too busy. Did you actually learn any yoga alignment, philosophy, ethics? What happened to you on Day 3 - “Breakthrough Day” as the staff calls it. Did you breakthrough or breakdown on that day, give in to Baron and the Methodology and accept and embrace it all? Does this sound familiar? The Recipe for Thought Reform: (from Combating Cult Mind Control by Steven Hassan) “Induced dissociated states, trance-induction via repeated affirmations, extended meditation, lengthy denunciation sessions, renegade psychotherapy without a license, hot seat criticisms focusing on one individual, extensive self-awareness training sessions, trauma bonding, isolation from friends and family, sleep deprivation, food deprivation. Control of information going in and out of the group environment. Peer and leadership pressure, extensive indoctrination sessions…” Did it prey on your desire to good in the world and then give you a discount if you register for Level 2 by then end of the week... what happened to you? ***The views and opinions expressed on Journey Into Yoga Cults are just that: views and opinions; and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast or the hosts. Only they have the right line, will make the revolution, solve your problems, empower you, make you loved, rich, effective, holy, etc. Attempts to isolate you from existing close relationships (friends/family) and the outside world Extreme, immediate and/or inappropriate friendliness or attention. Promises of perfection if only you adhere to their program Your “gut-feeling” tells you something is wrong. Trust this, and try to analyze it. The group creates conditions of extreme stress, threat or fear (emotional and/or physical) Not answering questions, or turning them back on the questioner. Inappropriate personal boundaries Loaded language: strange language or jargon you initially can't understand. Canned, repetitive phrases. A hard sell for further commitment, programs or contact. If you resist, you're selfish, ungodly, “bourgeois”, don't believe in yourself, etc. Encouragement to cut ties with family or friends, unless you can recruit them. Secrecy, inappropriate “confidentiality”. Lack of privacy - constantly with group members, constantly busy with group activities. Ends justifies the means. It's OK to lie to others in the name of the Cause, God, for success, etc. Challenging your fundamental identity: Your strengths are criticized as your weaknesses. Once you're in, heavy pressure to stay in. Those who do leave are shunned. They become the enemy, or objects of pity. No criticism allowed of the group or leader. The group/leader is always right. Deception: what you thought you'd get on joining or attending an activity turns out to be something else. Can understanding the nature of influence support people in cult recovery?  Dr. Steve Hassan, former cult member, author, educator, and world authority on cults will be our honored guest throughout this season . His published works include: The Cult of Trump: A Leading Cult Expert Explains How the President Uses Mind Control, Combating Cult Mind Control: The Guide to Protection, Rescue and Recovery from Destructive Cults, Freedom of Mind: Helping Loved Ones Leave Controlling People, Cults, and Beliefs. Today we are going to discuss his dissertation published January 2021: “The BITE Model of Authoritarian Control: Undue Influence, Thought Reform, Brainwashing, Mind Control, Trafficking and the Law.”Our focus today is the BITE model, which refers to Behavior-Information-Thought-Emotion control. Dr. Hassan developed BITE as a model for evaluating degrees undue influence. Gerette references the book Influence: Science and Practice by Robert Cialdini. Steven Hassan, PhD is a mental health professional and expert in undue influence tactics used by authoritarian leaders and destructive cults. His foundational online course is “Understand Cults: The Basics.” He is the Founding Director of the Freedom of Mind Resource Center, which provides training, consulting and support to individuals who are struggling to leave or recover from a cult and to families and organizations that are concerned about cult behaviors. He also is the founder of Freedom From Undue Influence, a not-for-profit entity with the purpose of conducting and publishing the research on undue influence that is needed to update legal and social policies. He developed the BITE Model of Authoritarian Control to identify control tactics and the Influence Continuum Model to discern ethical from unethical influence. He developed the Strategic Interactive Approach (SIA), as an effective and legal intervention alternative for families to help cult members. Dr. Hassan believes that access to the truth, freedom of thought, and freedom from undue influence are basic human rights. A complex systems approach, based in science and supported by the rule of law, is necessary to protect these rights. He is a member of the Program in Psychiatry and the Law at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. He is an experienced educator having served as an instructor for the Harvard Law School Trial Advocacy Workshop, as an elective teacher and a presenter for the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program, and in other educational and training capacities for other higher education, professional, law enforcement, governmental, non-governmental and advocacy group audiences. Dr. Hassan began helping people affected by undue influence after he was deprogrammed from the Moon cult in 1976 at age 22. His 45 plus years of experience give him a unique perspective on the damaging effects of undue influence and exploitation by destructive cults. He is a frequently requested speaker and media interviewee. Dr. Hassan holds a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Cambridge College and a Doctorate in Organizational Development and Change from Fielding Graduate University School of Leadership Studies. She said that before she went on stage the producer was doing a pre-interview and asked her ‘were you brainwashed?' I was tempted to completely derail the conversation and delve into a treatise on what thought reform is, and why asking a survivor if they were brainwashed is a stigmatizing question - at best. Some of the tactics that the Unification Church use to train members rolls up into the thought terminating cliché: that if someone is experiencing doubt, it is “evil spirit world invading.” These thought stopping techniques, also called a semantic stop-sign, are a mind control technique wherein loaded language is used to quell the cognitive dissonance that one experiences when encountering contradictory information or thoughts. It allows a person to remove the stress of the cognitive dissonance by avoiding all further consideration of a matter. The concept was popularized by Robert Jay Lifton in his book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, where he also referred to this technique as the as "The language of Non-thought.” Resources mentioned in this episode: Alcoholics Anonymous: Cult or Cure? The protests that swept through the streets of Hong Kong beginning in the summer of 2019 highlighted the tension that exists between the residents of the region and China's political leadership. The politics of the region have also made their way into American popular culture through public disputes within the NBA, controversy over Blizzard's decision to ban a prominent Hong Kong gamer, and a South Park episode critical of Chinese censorship that led to the series being completely banned in the country. In this episode, Bob and Ben speak with Mindy Smith to learn about the history of Hong Kong, its special status as a distinct region within China, and the forces that pushed the people of Hong Kong into the streets. We also talk about how Hong Kong's distinct history has led to a clash in historical narratives, and what US policy toward the region can tell us about US foreign policy under recent presidents. Dr. Aminda Smith is an Associate Professor of History at Michigan State University who specializes in modern Chinese history with a particular interest in the social and cultural history of Chinese Communism. Her first book, Thought Reform and China's Dangerous Classes: Reeducation, Resistance, and the People was published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2012. She also serves as co-director of the PRC History Group and editor for H-PRC. You can follow her on twitter at @AmindaASmith. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher. In this episode, Derin bravely goes in to greater detail about life inside the cult and his opportunities to leave. Listen first to the original episode about Derin joining this cult here. Derin articulately expresses, not just his own journey, but the narrative of those who were in the cult right alongside him. Derin's vulnerability and courage help us to hold our own experiences up to the light of his experience and see the extent to which we might be participating in similar social dynamics. Once we recognize these cliches, we have the opportunity to deal with this terminating language and press certain issues further.

This special bonus episode draws upon the work of psychologist Dr Robert Lifton and his seminal 1961 work on the psychology of brainwashing, Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of "Brainwashing" in China.  In particular, I make use of Lifton's 12-step model to explore further the psychology of conversion, as well as what happens to a person who deconstructs his or her religious faith and leaves their church or cult group behind--the process of "deconversion," or spiritual transitioning. This is a helpful discussion particularly for ex-evangelicals, but also for those who have left a cult. Unpicking the conditioning, and understanding how you were controlled and manipulated will help you reconstruct your sense of self--and your identity.

Aminda M. Smith‘s fascinating new book traces the history of transformations in the way that the PRC understood social control, deviance, and thought reform. Thought Reform and China’s Dangerous Classes: Reeducation, Resistance, and the People (Rowman and Littlefield, 2013) excavates the histories of thieves, prostitutes, and beggars from a wide range of letters, diaries, novels, films, memoirs, oral histories, media accounts, and classified government documents. Reintegrating vagrants into the history of reeducation changes how we understand the scope and nature of the Chinese Communist thought reform project. Smith takes us into the reeducation centers that served as laboratories where the rapidly changing ideas about the relationships between thought reform, labor, and individuals were worked out over the course of the early twentieth century. Taking readers from the countryside into urban centers and ultimately into Beijing, the book traces the emergence and metamorphosis of notions of the “People” over the course of this history, paying special attention to the central role that marginal figures of society played in definitions of this crucial concept. In addition to introducing some of the fascinating individuals that populate Smith’s account, in the course of our conversation we also talked about the opportunities and challenges of accessing those stories from an archive of “official sources.” Enjoy!
