Brāļu vecāmāte Late pagājušā gadsimta sākumā ļoti mīlējusi runāt par sadzīves un kultūras jautājumiem. "Mērnieku laiki" viņai bijuši kā karsts kartupelis mutē. Late teica, ka tādu ķengāšanos par latviešiem pat kungi neatļaujoties. Latvieši visumā notēloti kā tumsoņas, žūpas, kaušļi. Ne vārda par lielākajiem latviešu sasniegumiem saimnieciskā un kulturālā dzīvē, kas pielīdzināma Rīgai un Tērbatai. Līdz riebumam tiekot izsmieta tautas atmodas kustība. Stāvēdams uz kanceles, šīs ķengas ieteicot lasīt pat mācītājs, ko Late nesaudzīgi nosauc par "vācu suni". Šerpie piebaldzēni uzskatījuši, ka galvenais ķengātājs ir Matīss, mazāk Reinis, tomēr viņi abi savos uzskatos esot vairāk vācieši kā latvieši un kropli riteņi īsteno latviešu pulkā "Ķirps". Šajā biedrībā valdot Jurjāna, Pumpura, Ausekļa un Kronvalda radošais latviskais gars. Bez tam Matīss esot līdz ausīm ieķēries dzīvespriecīgajā skaistulē Līzē. Tās māte vāciete – Rātmindera madāma – esot zvērējusi meitu kaut kādam latviešu skolmeistaram neatdot. Arī pašai Līzei labāk patīkot būt "Ķirpa" vīru un puišu sabiedrībā, nekā ticīgo brāļu Kaudzīšu vidū. Lūk, tāpēc it sevišķi nelaimīgais mīlētājs Matīss, apskauzdams īsto tautas atmodas nesēju lielo slavu un neatzīdams viņu centienus, lienot vai no ādas laukā, lai parādītu sevi kā īstu Dieva kalpu un izpatiktu Rātmindera madāmai – noķengātu jaunlatviešus. Romānā Matīss cenšoties sevi parādīt kā Kasparu, bet visus jaunlatviešus apvienojot vienā izdomātā, līdz smieklīgumam izkariķētā tēlā, kādā ne Jaun-, ne Vecpiebalgā neeksistējošā tipā – Pietuka Krustiņā. Savu trauksmaino runāšanu Kārļa un Valda vecāmāte parasti pārtraukusi, teikdama: "Lai suņi rej, karavāna iet uz priekšu." Visi viņu atbalstījuši. Kārlis atceras, ka šādās reizēs viņa vecākais brālis Pēters, kas bieži mājās nesa grāmatas par sociālismu un lasīja līdz rītam, nereti piebilda: "Drīz būs pavisam jauna, taisnīgāka iekārta." Šo Pētera pareģojumu parasti strupi pārtrauca tēvs, teikdams: "Kopus cūka nebarojas," un ar to runāšana beidzās. Taču nebeidzās pārsteigumi, kas satuvināja Ruku un Branderu dzimtas. Tas sākās kā kaimiņu būšana. Blakus mājā dzīvoja saiešanu tētiņš jeb dievvārdu sludinātājs Kopmaņtēvs no Ilzēnu saiešanas nama. Visu savu dzīvi viņš staigājis, kā sacīt, ar Bībeli rokā. Darbus sākot, arī pirms ēšanas, sēstoties un pieceļoties, tētiņš noskaitījis dažus citātus no svētās grāmatas. Viņa sieva bijusi slimīga, bet saimnieks, sludinādams Kristus mācību, saimniecību pametis novārtā, un iztikšana bijusi trūcīga. Saimniecība uzplaukusi, kad dēls Jānis apprecējis Emīliju Branderi no "Ķenciem". Kāzu svinības un mielastu posuši un gatavojuši Branderi – Emīlijas tēvs ar māti. Kāzu mielastam nokāvuši Kopmaņu vienīgo slaucamo govi, jo tā bijusi daudz sliktāka piena devēja kā jaunās sievas atvestās pūra govis. Ar "Ķencu" Branderu palīdzību Kopmaņi uzcēluši jauno dzīvojamo māju – "Jaunseviķus". Kā tā īslaicīgi kļuva par skolu un cik izglītotas, spilgtas un patstāvīgi domājošas bija Branderu septiņas meitas, uzzināsiet nākamajā stāstā...

Cool, Luminous, and Highly Variable Stars in the Magellanic Clouds II: Spectroscopic and Environmental Analysis of Thorne-Żytkow Object and Super-AGB Star Candidates by Anna J. G. O'Grady et al. on Thursday 24 November In previous work we identified a population of 38 cool and luminous variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds and examined 11 in detail in order to classify them as either Thorne-.Zytkow Objects (T.ZOs, red supergiants with a neutron star cores) or super-AGB stars (the most massive stars that will not undergo core collapse). This population includes HV,2112, a peculiar star previously considered in other works to be either a T.ZO or high-mass AGB star. Here we continue this investigation, using the kinematic and radio environments and local star formation history of these stars to place constraints on the age of the progenitor systems and the presence of past supernovae. These stars are not associated with regions of recent star formation, and we find no evidence of past supernovae at their locations. Finally, we also assess the presence of heavy elements and lithium in their spectra compared to red supergiants. We find strong absorption in Li and s-process elements compared to RSGs in most of the sample, consistent with super-AGB nucleosynthesis, while HV,2112 shows additional strong lines associated with T.ZO nucleosynthesis. Coupled with our previous mass estimates, the results are consistent with the stars being massive (~4-6.5M$_{odot}$) or super-AGB (~6.5-12M$_{odot}$) stars in the thermally pulsing phase, providing crucial observations of the transition between low- and high-mass stellar populations. HV,2112 is more ambiguous; it could either be a maximally massive sAGB star, or a T.ZO if the minimum mass for stability extends down to

Stāsta sinoptiķis un meteorologs Toms Bricis Vai zini, kāpēc Zosēni ir visaukstākā vieta Latvijā? Vai precīzāk - aukstākā zināmā vieta Latvijā jeb aukstākā no tām vietām, kur tiek mērīta temperatūra. Tāpēc ziņās un jo īpaši laika ziņās Zosēnu vārds izskan itin bieži. Latvijas Vides, ģeoloģijas un meteoroloģijas centrs nepārtrauktā režīmā laika apstākļu raksturojošos elementus mēra 31 vietā Latvijā. Vēl ir vietas, kur mērījumi ir nepilnīgāki vai specializēti hidroloģiskajām vajadzībām, tos šajā pulkā neieskaita. Un tātad, no 31 vietas Latvijā Zosēnos regulāri ir visaukstākais un arī mēnešu un gadu vidējie rādītāji parasti liecina par aukstumu. Kāpēc? Atbilde ir gauži vienkārša - arī mūsu it kā nelielie, bet tomēr pauguri ietekmē laikapstākļus. Vidzemes augstiene ir mūsu kalni. Un, kā zināms, kalnos ir vēsāks. Kāpēc? Jo gaiss kalnos ir retinātāks, tas nespēj absorbēt un uzturēt sevī tik daudz siltuma kā blīvāks gaiss, kas atrodas zemāk. Teorijā katri 100 metri virs jūras līmeņa nozīmē aptuveni par 0,7 grādiem vēsāku klimatu. Bet tas ir vidējais rādītājs. Realitātē tas nozīmē, ka piemērotos apstākļos tur ir krietni vēsāks, piemēram, kad debesis skaidras un vēji pavisam lēni, bet, kad ir apmācies un vējains, Zosēnos var būt siltāks nekā citviet. Zosēnos meteoroloģisko novērojumu stacija atrodas aptuveni 190 metrus virs jūras līmeņa. Zināms, ka Vidzemes augstienē ir pauguri, kas ir pat vairāk nekā simt metru augstāki un mūsu Gaiziņš - 311 metri. Ja meteostacijas būtu novietotas arī augstākās vietās, visticamāk, Zosēnu vārdu mēs tik bieži nedzirdētu. Arī Vidzemes augstienē dzīvojošie bieži saka - mums ir vēl aukstāks nekā Zosēnos un tā arī, visticamāk, ir, tomēr tur oficiālus mērījumus neveic. Zinošākie jautās - bet kā ar Alūksni? Tur arī ir meteostacija - taisnība. Alūksnes meteostacija atrodas pat pāris metrus augstāk par Zosēniem, bet te jāņem vērā, ka Alūksnes augstiene ir mazāka par Vidzemes augstieni, tādēļ to biežāk ietekmē relatīvs siltums no tuvējām zemākām vietām, kamēr Zosēni ir pauguru ieskauti. Šogad netālu no Zosēniem ir uzstādīta jauna meteostacija. Tā gan nepieder Latvijas Vides, ģeoloģijas un meteoroloģijas centram, bet mežzinātnes institūtam "Silava", kas veic pētījumus Dzērbenes pusē. Datus no šīs meteostacijas nevarēs uzskatīt par oficiāliem, tomēr tā atrodas augstāk nekā Zosēni un pat mazliet augstāk nekā Alūksnes meteostacija, līdz ar to domājams, ka ziemas aukstuma viļņos ziņās izskanēs arī Dzērbenes vārds. Varētu jautāt: ja Zosēni ir aukstākā vieta Latvijā, tad kas ir siltākā? To tik bieži nedzird. Jā, jo lielie karstuma rekordi mēdz tikt uzstādīti daudzās meteostacijās, kas atrodas ārpus mūsu augstienēm, bet ir viena vieta, kur savu roku jo īpaši pielicis cilvēks, lai tā kļūtu karstāka - tā, protams, ir Rīga. Apbūves dēļ pilsētas centrā vasaras karstuma viļņos ir karstāks gan pēcpusdienās, gan jo īpaši naktīs: kad laukos zaļās pļavas un meži veicina gaisa atdzišanu, pilsētā gaisu turpina sildīt saulē uzkarsušie mūri un asfaltētās ielas. Un atšķirība starp Rīgu un Zosēniem ir liela - ņem, kuru rādītāju gribi… Es izvēlējos tropiskās naktis jeb tās vasaras naktis, kad tā arī nekļūst vēsāks par 20 grādiem, kad saule jau atkal aust un cepina no jauna. Zosēnos šajā gadsimtā - visās šī gadsimta 22 vasarās kopā - ir bijušas 6 šādas naktis. Tātad vidēji sanāk reizi 3-4 gados tāda viena nakts. Rīgā tādu šajā gadsimtā bijis gandrīz simts: pērn vien 19. Un ja skatāmies otrā galējībā - aukstumos - Rīgā pēdējo reizi -30 grādu sals bijis tālajā 1994. gadā. Šajā gadsimtā - ne reizi. Ziemas kļūst siltākas arī Zosēnos, tomēr -30 grādu un lielāks sals bijis sešās šī gadsimta ziemās. Tātad arī reizi 3-4 gados. Tādi ir mūsu Zosēni.

Stāsta mākslas vēsturniece Anita Vanaga 1903. gadā Rīgas Latviešu biedrība sarīkoja operas libretu konkursu. Konkursa nolikums paredzēja pievēršanos baltu mītiskai senatnei. Pirmo godalgu saņēma arhitektūras students Artūrs Krūmiņš par libretu “Baņuta”. Savu titulvaroni Baņutu Krūmiņš atrada žurnālā “Rota”. Žurnāls sevi dēvēja par “Literārisku un zinisku laikrakstu ar bildēm”. To izdeva Rīgā no 1884. gada oktobra līdz 1887. gada aprīlim. Krūmiņš žurnālu lasīja savās mājās Skrāģu krogā Zosēnos. Teātra zinātniece Lilija Dzene teica — Zosens, šitais mazais Zosens! Toponīmam nav nekāda sakara ar zosīm, bet gan vācu so schön — tik skaisti! Tagad Skrāģu krogā darbojas režisora Gunta Gailīša ierīkotais “Baņutas” muzejs.   Žurnālā “Rota” īpaši apjomīgs bija kāds anonīma autora romāns “Jaunais varonis”, kas tika publicēts ar krāšņām ilustrācijām 1885. gadā 23 turpinājumos. Romāns vēstīja par senlietuviešu cīņu pret teitoņu ordeni. Tas pauda nacionālās brīvības idejas un vēlmi atbrīvoties no “ģermāņu gara”. Tajā pašā laikā lietuviešu un ģermāņu militārajā konfliktā tika saglabāta godbijība pret kristietību. Romānu “Jaunais varonis” no poļu valodas bija latviskojis kāds, kas parakstījās ar iniciāļiem P. G. Filozofijas goda doktors Ludis Bērziņš krājumā “Latviešu literatūras vēsture” kā romāna autoru pieteica poļu rakstnieku Juzefu Ignaciju Kraševski (Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, 1812–1889), kas uzskatīja sevi par lietuvieti. Romāna oriģinālo nosaukumu “Latviešu literatūras vēsture” nemin. Nu gribējās uzzināt, kādu Kraševska darbu bija lasījis Artūrs Krūmiņš. Viļņas Universitātes absolvents Juzefs Ignacijs Kraševskis tiek uzskatīts par autoru vairāk nekā 200 romāniem un 150 novelēm, stāstiem un recenzijām. Par Kraševska ražību ironizēja jau laikabiedri. Skatoties uz cipariem, gribot negribot uzrodas literārie vergi vai jezuītu pulciņš, kas ar literāriem paņēmieniem īsteno savus nodomus. Atrast vajadzīgo romānu palīdzēja lietuviešu teātra zinātnieks doktors Helmūts Šabasevičs. Operas “Baņuta” impulss, izrādās, ir meklējams Juzefa Ignacija Kraševska romānā “Kunigas”. Tas sarakstīts 1881. gadā un publicēts 1882. gadā. Īsi par svarīgāko. Romāna galvenā darbība norisinās Pilēnos (Pillen). Teitoņi nogalina lietuviešus un laupa mazus zēnus. Starp nolaupītajiem zēniem ir kunigs Marģeris. Teitoņi viņu nosauc par Jerzy jeb Juri. Juris/Marģeris tiek audzināts kā nākamais krustnesis. Kad puisis atklāj savu patieso izcelsmi, viņš sāk domāt par bēgšanu no Malborkas/Malburgas pils. Kļūdas dēļ teitoņi nolaupījuši arī meiteni Baņutu/Barbaru, kas uzaug spēļu namā. Viņa ir skaista un brīvdomīga, un nepieradināma. Jaunieši atrod viens otru, pateicoties skumīgai lietuviešu dziesmai, kuru dzied Baņuta. Viņi samīlas un nolemj bēgt kopā uz lietuviešu Pilēniem. Pilēnos pār savu cilti valda nogalinātā kuniga atraitne Reda. Zīlnieks pavēsta, ka viņas dēls Marģeris ir dzīvs. Te dzīvo arī Jargala — muižniece, Baņutas māte. Viņas laime, ieraugot meitu dzīvu, aptumšojas, kad Baņutai skaistuma dēļ jākļūst par vaideloti. Pilēnos savu pēdējo stundu gaida Marģera vectēvs Valgutis. Kāzas tomēr notiek. Pili ielenc teitoņi. Lai saglabātu godu, Baņuta lūdz Marģerim nogalināt sevi, pirms viņš izdara pašnāvību. Nodedzinātā pils kļūst par mirušo pili. Tāpēc zināmā mērā tā ir saistīta ar Anapili (Anafielas), kas nozīmē mītisko mūžības kalnu. Jāpiebilst, ka, ietekmējot lietuviešu literatūru, Kraševskis ierosinājis arī vairākas lietuviešu operas. Žurnāls “Rota” izmantoja Elvīro Mikaēla Andriolli (Elviro Michael Andriolli, 1836–1893) zīmējumus, kurus kokgrebumā reproducēja Edvards Gorazdovskis (Edward Gorazdowski, 1843–1901). “Rota” ilustrācijas nepasūtīja, bet, taupot līdzekļus, izmantoja politipāžas, uzskata profesors Valdis Villerušs. Rakstnieka noklusēšana un romāna nosaukuma maiņa liek domāt, ka bija grūtības ar atlīdzību autoriem. Mākslinieks Elvīro Mikaēls Andriolli bija mācījies Maskavas zīmēšanas un tēlniecības skolā un ieguvis brīvmākslinieka diplomu Pēterburgas Mākslas akadēmijā (1859). Pieprasītajam ilustratoram un viņa darbu gravierim padevās gan sadzīves ainas, gan batālijas. Tieši Andriolli krāšņās ilustrācijas bija iegaumējis Artūrs Krūmiņš: “Atceros labi kādu koka griezumu: zema, krēslaina telpa, vidū trauks ar ūdeni, apgaismots — pār trauku noliekušies ļaudis, notiek zīlēšana, pašreiz zīlē Baņuta. Šis vārds kaut kā dziļi iegūlās atmiņā, kad pēc ilgiem gadiem sāku domāt par libretu.” Raidījuma mājaslapā šīs ilustrācijas var ieraudzīt. Krūmiņa piesauktajā attēlā redzama nevis Baņuta, bet zīlnieks, kas Redai zīlē (“Rota”, 1885, 6): “Tavs dēls ir dzīvs un staigā Dieva pasaulē!”. Vai agonija romāna finālā: “Marģeris, sievu uz rokas turēdams, grūda šķēpu viņai krūtīs”. Bet starp Kraševski un Krūmiņu vēl ir Lautenbahs-Jūsmiņš. Romāna beigās publicēts Jūsmiņa dzejojums 17 pantos “Marģeris un Baņuta”. Te - pirmais un priekšpēdējais pants: “Valguda jo stiprā pils jau krita Leišu zemei smagas brūces sita, Krita krietnās Redas Pileni Dividesmit tūkstoš bruņinieki,  Krusta karotāji, šķēpneši Apkaroja pili briesmīgi.   Marģerim nu zobins nozibēja, Ātri ātri krūtis spiesties spēja, Ko bij atklājusi Baņuta; Siltu tad no mīļās krūtīm rāva Zobinu, ar joni sevi kāva, Klusu abi garu izlaida.”
