Iria Leino kuoli vuonna 2022 89-vuotiaana. Hänen abstraktia taidettaan esitellään parhaillaan Galerie Forsblomilla Helsingissä. Leino teki mallinuran Pariisissa Diorin ja Balmainin mallina. Hän opiskeli kuvataidetta Suomessa ja Pariisissa. Hänen kuolemansa jälkeen löytyi yli tuhat maalausta hänen New Yorkin kodistaan SoHossa. Ohjelman juontajana on Pia-Maria Lehtola.

Rebbert, Anke www.deutschlandfunk.de, Kalenderblatt
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was barely known during her lifetime but an exhibition of her work at the Guggenheim Museum in 2018 shattered attendance records. it was called Paintings for the Future, and the giant abstract work astounded visitors who had not heard of her before. Joining journalist Zing Tsjeng in studio to discuss her life is Jennifer Higgie who wrote in her book, The Other Side: A Journey into Women, Art and The Spirit World, "For Hilma af Klint, the very air throbbed with unseen energies. The question was - how to interpret them? How to give them shape?" The artist often used seances for inspiration. If curious about where creativity begins, this is a story you may want bto hear. Zing Tsjeng is a former editor-in-chief of Vice UK and presenter of Good Bad Billionaire.

In this episode I share some thoughts that I catalogued during my travels in Italy this Summer. I touch on the effects of a modern society operating in an ancient matrix, the karmic shackles of an Florentine pigeon, predator - prey relationships, and the lotus city traps of new age spiritual colonialism in the form of cacao circles and music festivals.I then present downloads threading the Lyrans, Lemurians, Venus, and Atlantis together along with the physical location on Earth where I believe Atlantis one reigned. For this episode my guest is art historian Emily Leon. Emily's research focuses on modernism and the esoteric interests of late-19th and early-20th century western artists, with a particular concentration on abstraction and the links between art, science, and religion. Since 2017, much of her scholarship has focused on the social, spiritual, and theoretical implications of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint's work. Most recently, in 2023 she presented “Past-Future, Present-Future, Future-Future: Hilma af Klint in Three Temporal Dimensions” for the Modernist Futures conference, hosted by Modernist Studies in Asia. Emily is also the founder of the transdisciplinary working group 'In the Eggshell', a five-part lecture series that seeks to redress modern art by turning to how the sciences, religious beliefs, and occult traditions provide a better articulation of the subject. In the interview I begin by talking with her about the origins of the relationship between esotericism and modern, abstract art. From there our conversation moves on to Hilma af Klint, specifically the occult ideas that influenced her art as well as the unusual methods she used such as spirit channeling that were a vital aspect of her craft. We also discuss the deeper meaning of Af Klint's artwork and the vision she had for how it was meant be displayed, before concluding by talking about Emily's own efforts to encourage a better understanding of the relationship between modern art, science and esotericism with the 'In the Eggshell' lecture series. Emily can be found on Twitter at https://twitter.com/DisincarnateEVL and more details on 'In the Eggshell' are available at https://desertsuprematism.com/. In the early years of the 20th century, an obscure woman in Sweden invented abstract art to reflect her spiritualist views in which the physical world we know was only the lowest plane of existence. Despite her mixed efforts, few people knew about her art for decades until it was rediscovered in the 1980s to high critical acclaim. Also, the poll for the topic of Series 11 is available on Patreon and it is free for anyone to vote.Visit the website (herhalfofhistory.com) for sources, transcripts, and pictures.Support the show on my Patreon page for bonus episodes, polls, and a general feeling of self-satisfaction.Follow me on Twitter as @her_half. Hilma Af Klint was making abstract paintings before Kaninsky and Mondrian. She was exploring automatic writing and drawing guided by the subconscious decades before the surrealists. The term avant garde literally refers to those going ahead of the rest. Hilma Af Klint was among the greatest avant garde artists in history. Hilma Af Klint's long time in relative obscurity is partly due to the stipulations of her will. She stated that her works should not be shown until 20 years after her death. She was medium who said that her abstract paintings were guided by otherworldly entities. She was a part of a collective known as The Five and the women would hold seances which guided their artistic practices. Hilma Af Klint said her works could not be understood or appreciated until decades after her death because while most artists are chasing trends, Hilma Af Klint was using her intuition to create paintings that would blow the minds of future generations. Tate Modern curator Nabila Abdel Nabi plants European abstract art in transnational networks of spirituality and theosophy, through Hilma af Klint's 1908 series or cycle, The Evolution, Paintings for the Temple. Abstract artists Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian never met. But in their respective environments of Sweden and the Netherlands, both invented new languages of visual art as rooted in nature at the turn of the 20th century. Departing from traditional landscapes - with a touch of Vincent Van Gogh - they embarked on radical and ethereal painting series, connecting humans as a part of. not separate to, ecology. Nabila Abdel Nabi, a curator of Tate Modern's new exhibition, Forms of Life, explores how showing these artists in conversation defies their typical depiction as solitary artists who worked alone. We see Klint and Mondrian as active participants in global communities, with works that speak to scientific debates around Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and the spiritual and philosophical movement, theosophy. Rethinking ‘control' and ‘rationality' - as stereotypes of abstract art, and concepts used to exclude women artists from history - Abdel Nabi underlines af Klint and Mondrian's intuitive practices, and how both used abstraction not to defy nature, but to think through it. Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondrian: Forms of Life runs at the Tate Modern in London until 3 September 2023. Writer, filmmaker, actor, singer, and meditation teacher, Kevin Townley talks about his latest book featuring women whose work exemplifies each of the five wisdom energies in Tibetan Buddhism, how the energies can show up in daily life, and how the spiritualist abstract artist Hilma af Klint embodied the wisdom energy of emptiness.
Mystic. Painter. Feminist. Fantasist. Forgotten pioneer. Who exactly was Hilma af Klint? In this very special live episode of The Last Bohemians, as part of Tate Lates, host Kate Hutchinson talks to actor, model and activist Lily Cole and Amrita Dhallu, Assistant Curator of International Art at Tate Modern, to discuss the life (1862-1944) and work of the once forgotten Swedish pioneer of abstract art. Cole stars as one of De Fem ('The Five'), af Klint's Stockholm-based spiritual group who communed with spirits during séances in the late-1800s, in Lasse Hallström's brand new biopic of the artist. Dhallu is part of the team who put together Tate Modern's latest exhibition, boldly pairing Klint's extraordinary paintings with those of Piet Mondrian and asking us to consider the role that the natural world played in their work. Together, they consider how great women artists throughout history have been criminally overlooked, the legacy of af Klint's work today and why the af Klint renaissance is in full-swing. The Swedish painter Hilma af Klint died nearly 80 years ago in relative obscurity, but you might not immediately realize this if you look her up today. Her paintings, large-scale, vivid, symbolic, and abstract masterpieces infused with mysticism and spirituality, seem uncannily contemporary. But that is not the only reason; af Klint is also now a bonafide star, an art-world household name. In the past several years alone there has been an explosion of interest in her work, catalyzed in no small part via her blockbuster 2018 Guggenheim show in New York called “Paintings for the Future.” Af Klint's body of work, which bravely departed from the figurative art that was popular at the turn of the 20th century when she was working, predates the first Western abstract compositions by titans like Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian. It was a staggering revelation, to say the least. But moving beyond the elevator pitch and the catchphrases that have emerged around af Klint as we rush to fit her into an art historical canon that has woefully excluded women, is essential. Up until recently, many of the intricacies of her life, work, ambitions, and friendships, were not well-understood. That is part of the reason why Julia Voss decided to write the first-ever biography on the artist, which came out in English at the end of last year. Voss, a prominent German journalist, art critic, researcher, and curator, spent the better part of a decade learning Swedish and meticulously retracing af Klint's life and her movements in Europe. Voss combed through more than 20,000 notebooks that belonged to af Klint as well as her massive archive, which the artist had left to her nephew. The biography includes several revelations about af Klint's inner life, desires, and activities. We are headed into another two years that is sure to bring increased attention and reflection on the work of Af Klint. Her massive catalog raisonne is due out next month, edited by Swedish curator and art critic Daniel Birnbaum. An exhibition called “Swedish Ecstasy” at BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels opens this week. Next year, for the first time ever, there will be a show dedicated to Kandinsky and af Klint, curated by Birnbaum and Voss. On this week's episode, Voss joins Artnet News European editor Kate Brown to dive into some of the more fascinating and under-considered aspects of the enigmatic and groundbreaking artist.
I've got a great interview for you today— this time, I'm featuring a conversation with Julia Voss on her fascinating book, Hilma af Klint, a Biography, which was released recently in its English translation. The Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was forty-four years old when she broke with the academic tradition in which she had been trained to produce a body of radical, abstract works the likes of which had never been seen before. Today, it is widely accepted that af Klint was one of the earliest abstract academic painters in Europe. But this is only part of her story. Not only was she a working female artist, she was also an avowed clairvoyant and mystic. Like many of the artists at the turn of the twentieth century who developed some version of abstract painting, af Klint studied Theosophy, which holds that science, art, and religion are all reflections of an underlying life-form that can be harnessed through meditation, study, and experimentation. Well before Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Malevich declared themselves the inventors of abstraction, af Klint was working in a nonrepresentational mode, producing a powerful visual language that continues to speak to audiences today. The exhibition of her work in 2018 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City attracted more than 600,000 visitors, making it the most-attended show in the history of the institution. Despite her enormous popularity, there has not yet been a biography of af Klint—until now. Please enjoy this bonus episode, featuring my discussion with Julia Voss. Hilma af Klint was a painter making abstract art years before men like Kandinsky and she was exploring automatic drawing long before the surrealists. She knew she was well ahead of her time, which is why she stipulated in her will, that many of her greatest works were not to be displayed until 20 years after her death.
Break a bottle of bubbly beverage over the hull, because today, Pep Talks is launching the very first installment of..."Elisabeth Condon Describes a Painting!" In this episode, Elisabeth chose to describe Jules Olitski's "Wanderings, Bilbao: Orange Yellow and Blue" acrylic on canvas painting from 2004. She recently saw the painting at The Sam and Adele Golden Gallery in New Berlin, NY, in "Jules Olitski: Late Works." The show is up until March 2023 and another concurrent show of his works is also up at Yares Gallery in New York. It was an honor to have Elisabeth's wild and wonderful way of looking at painting on the pod. Tune in to hear me giggling helplessly for the entire show. Thank you, Elisabeth! This week I had an amazing conversation with artist, Adie Russell. We discussed her incredible new "Lacuna" series of charcoal works on cotton rag paper (based on old Victorian glass negative studio portraits that are put through an obscure Photoshop filter) and also, her newest video work, "Hydriogenesis," which was born of a craving for a feeling of safety in nature and from the long periods of introspection we all experienced during the pandemic. We also talked about the trickiness of navigating Instagram in an authentic way, what can be used as a sourdough starter for abstraction, Adie's "Covers" video project and Marlon Brando's idea about how everyone is ALWAYS acting, AND of course, the Caterpillar Pillar. (Please check out Episode 30 to learn all about said Pillar where I do a deep dive into Adie's recommended artist-pick-me-up book from the 70's: Hope for the Flowers.) Adie's website: adierussell.com and Instagram: @adie_russell Adie is opening her studio up (w/ guest artist Jesse Bransford) for Upstate Art Weekend, Sat-Sun July 23-24 12-6pm and is #20 (near the Stoneleaf Retreat) on the Map : upstateartweekend.org Adie is a mixed media artist currently working in drawing, painting and video. Russell has exhibited regularly since 2001 in the United States and abroad. She was the subject of a solo exhibition The Reveal at the Leeds College of Arts in Leeds, UK as well as the exhibition I Am (Richard Nixon) at The Center for Photography at Woodstock in Woodstock, NY, amongst others. Her work is in the collection of The Dorsky Museum, in New Paltz, NY. This week, Stauney introduces Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Long ignored by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and most of contemporary rock culture, Tharpe was one of the fundamental starts to the entire Rock & Roll music movement and one of the main influences for its lasting legacy. We discuss her beginnings as a childhood guitar and musical prodigy in her pentecostal gospel music group, her touring across the country, her start in the secular music scene, numerous relationships and intrigue surrounding them, and the lasting legacy she so richly deserves.Episodes to check out after this one: Hilma Af Klint, Karen CarpenterWant to check out some of our favorite books? Suzanne LaGrande interviews writer, blogger, online art curator Sarah Elizabeth who has just published The Art of the Occult, a visual sourcebook for the Modern Mystic. The book draws together artists from a variety of occult sources and practices: from theosophy and kabbalah, from alchemy; spiritualism to sacred geometry. It introduces the ideas behind different occult traditions and showcases the artists who have been influenced by them. Included in the book are symbolic and mythical images of the Pre-Raphaelites; the automatic drawing of Hilma Af Klint and Madge Gill; Leonora Carrington's surrealist interpretation of myth, alchemy, and Kabbalah; and much more.In the interview, Ms. Elizabeth discusses how her interest curiosity about art and artists that she loved, combined with her interest in occult themes inspired this book, how art juxtaposes different realities, and how it helps ask important questions particularly in times of upheaval.
