On this episode of K-Swiss Live, Omar welcomes Mason Tompkins K-Swiss videographer as a co-host. They converse about a recent team-building activity and the importance of it, having a voice on TiKTok, mental philosophy, and hitting 100k on Instagram. Every quarter HQ has a town hall meeting where the company gets updated on everything happening in all regions. This meeting was focused on culture and team building. It’s important to work with people from other departments to problem solve and learn from each other. The key learning from this activity was problem-solving as a team, asking questions, and executing the problem faster and more efficient. Everyone has a voice and something to give the world. Mason is currently building his TikTok account around his life philosophy. On a platform where most people think it’s kids, dancing videos, etc, Mason has found that people on that platform are also interested in his life advice. If you want to be seen by more people and grow an audience, produce more content that you’re interested in. “Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be, and be one” – Marcus Aurelius. On the topic of personal branding, Omar and Mason share personal life philosophies. No one knows you better than you know yourself, you know your values, you know what you want to achieve, and if you constantly work on being the hero of your own life, things will improve. Lastly, community is the main reason the team produces podcasts, vlogs, and engages with people on all platforms. Instagram is about to hit 100k! There will be a fun giveaway, so be on the lookout for the 100k post. Show us love by leaving a review and rating the show! Let us know what you’d like to hear us talk about next. On this episode of K-Swiss Live, Omar and Barney talk about recent collaborations, surrounding yourself around positive people, and the importance of showing up. Collaborations are a big part of our “Spark Strategy. Just like a fire, you give it enough sparks and soon enough you’ll start a fire. The strategy is to create memorable moments in collaboration with pop culture that result with more sales on classic models. The most recent collaborations are with Breaking Bad “Cooking and Cleaning”, and fashion designer Willy Chavarria. Entrepreneurship is the new aspiration of youth culture. Last week Barney was a guest speaker at Stacking Growth, hosted by 26-year-old entrepreneur Thomas Ma, where 100 people are invited to network and learn from industry leaders. It is important to surround yourself with positive and motivated people when you are in the journey of entrepreneurship. If you want positive results, live positive and surround yourself with positive motivated people. We live in a time where everybody thinks they deserve more simply because they showed up to work. There is a difference between showing up and SHOWING UP. Showing up every day, doing your work, and expecting a reward isn’t the same as SHOWING UP, doing great work, and not caring about a reward. “Calm waters don’t make great sailors.” If everything is easy, you don’t learn much, when things are tough you learn a lot, and SHOWING UP when things are tough is how people earn rewards. On this episode of K-Swiss Live, Omar and Barney converse about Stacking Growth, cheering people on, and putting yourself in uncomfortable situations to improve confidence. Stacking Growth is an entrepreneur networking event hosted by Thomas Ma, in Los Angeles and New York. Thomas recently came into the office to visit and talk about TiKTok strategy. Barney says “No one is really off-limits due to social media. Everyone is reachable” and Thomas coming to the office and presenting his idea is evidence of that. Events like Stacking Growth make connecting with CEOs, executives, and hungry entrepreneurs much easier. Cheering people on is so important. Too often people gossip about top performers because of jealousy and personal insecurities. When someone is doing amazing things, it should inspire you to do the same. There is power in cheering people on, vs gossiping and bringing people down. Lastly, they touch on putting yourself in uncomfortable situations to improve confidence. Barney recommends a book he’s reading called “Talk Like TED”. This book is about storytelling and building stories, “Stories are just data with a soul”. On this episode of the Marketing Swipe File, DG sits down with Barney Waters, President of K-Swiss. They discuss the overlap between B2B and B2C marketing. (Is there still a difference?) Plus the key to understanding people, what makes for great writing, Barney's favorite books and how he resurrected the K-Swiss brand to compete with the likes of Nike and Adidas.
BGBS Episode 016: CEOs Wear Sneakers…Barney oversees all aspects of K-Swiss, the global sneaker brand, having taken over as President at the beginning of 2016 with a goal to bring the 50 year old brand back to prominence and profitability. Barney has driven fast change both internally and externally, and created a breakthrough brand position around entrepreneurship and brand transparency. Barney has also been Vice President of Marketing for heritage boot brand Palladium, overseeing the brand's global re-launch and all aspects of brand communication. Prior to Palladium Barney was based in Boston as Vice President of Marketing for PUMA North America during the brands explosive growth period. Now based in new offices in DTLA, Barney is originally from London, England and has been in the footwear industry for over 15 years. In this episode we talked about: What sort of fashion Barney was into growing up when it came to clothes, shoes, and music. Barney's early career in the software industry moving into the sneaker business, both in marketing, and his original aspiration, to be a sales person. Barney becoming head of marketing for Puma and later head of marketing for Puma in North America seven years later. What led Barney to move to California and what strategies he implemented to rebuild Palladium. The history of KSWISS and the reasons why the founders designed their sneakers the way they are. What led to Barney becoming the president of KSWISS and the process he took to get there. The importance of timing and fashion trends as indicators to maximize the full market potential. What sort of strategies Barney did to get the KSWISS brand back to relevance. The focus on considering the brand a “tennis specialist” which was a heritage American tennis brand, and the only one in the world. The importance of branding and tips Barney used to change the perception of the KSWISS brand. How Barney got Gary Vee involved with KSWISS and how his involvement turned into a great success. CEOs Wear Sneakers podcast and where the idea for the show came about. The plans for KSWISS future and some of the programs Barney is working on. Quotes: [03:48] “I just love the fact that you're actually sort of the chess player. You're the one who's sort of scheming and calculating and trying to read the market and put together the plan, and I like that.” [17:29] “I could have told a great story about how we're the number one best running shoes for marathons, but if that wasn't what the market was buying, then I have a great story that's irrelevant in terms of selling shoes.” [22:50] “…look, product sales and marketing have to be aligned. In other words, if marketing creates an amazing campaign and gets a ton of eyeballs and then that consumer goes to the mall at the weekend, but there's no case wishings in the stores, then that brand awareness cannot be converted to a sale.” [23:09] “…you've got to be careful that you're not, marketing isn't generating demand. That can't be fulfilled because sales, hasn't been aligned on the plan.” [25:38] “I mean, that's probably one of the things about having an older brand is the good news is that people really like and trust in the longevity of a brand, that the downside is, you've got this baggage because it's hard to change the perception of that brand because that perception of the brand resides in somebody else's mind, not in yours.” [38:20] “I think these days branding is becoming much more important for companies. I just feel like we always pick our presidents or CEOs from the commercial side, either the CFO or the head of sales and brand is probably the most important thing now because, there's parity in features and functions.” [39:09] “I feel like branding has raised an importance. If you're not a company that is solidifying what your brand stands for and building what your brand stands for and then communicating that, then you're going to be in trouble.” Links Mentioned On Our Show: Gary Vee Dark Cloud Shoes Clouds and Dirt Gary Vee shoes 88 Knit-Clouds and Dirt Shoes CEOs Wear Sneakers Podcast KSWISS Puma Palladium Gary Vee (Vaynerchuck)

Barney Waters is the President of K-Swiss, responsible for all aspects of sales, product, and marketing for the brand globally. Barney is a genius in the branding space, and he has completely revitalized and transformed the K-Swiss brand. He also has some awesome advice for any young entrepreneur or hustler who want to run their own brand or business. Previously, Barney was the Chief Marketing Officer for K-Swiss. However, to really make an impact with the brand, he had to take it to the next level: connecting the sales with the branding and storytelling. That’s when things really started to click. The shoe market moves really quickly, so you have to stay ahead of the game to stay competitive; “you can’t follow the formula set by your incumbents.” So instead of looking for rappers and pro athletes to compete with Adidas and Nike, Barney looked towards the entrepreneur space – and Gary V. We’re in a new era of entrepreneurship, characterized by young people like us who want to create and run our own businesses and brands. There’s a massive shift in the aspirations of young people, but one thing hasn’t changed: we still want to look good. Barney capitalized on that opportunity, moving to inspire the outfits of the next generation of entrepreneurs. Gary V was an obvious fit. And so far, this partnership has even exceeded Barney’s expectations – Gary V’s first custom K-Swiss sneaker crashed their website, a second released at the end of February, and there are plans for at least one more custom sneaker this year. There’s a lot more coming in the next year, as K-Swiss continues to make moves in the entrepreneurial space. I’m really excited to see where things go, and I think you’ll see K-Swiss blowing up in 2018. Resources: Connect with Barney: Twitter | Instagram Follow K-Swiss: Instagram | Facebook | Twitter
