The ALL NEW Big Wakeup Call with Ryan Gatenby

From November 7, 2018: Bill Scheft,  long-time writer for David Letterman, called in to talk about a new book, The Last Days of Letterman: The Final Six Weeks. Bill wrote the forward for the book, and when I mentioned how unusual it was to have someone on who was not the author of the book but the author of the forward, I got one genuine, hearty laugh.  Making a legendary comedy writer laugh is another highlight of my career. The Last Days of Letterman: The Final 6 Weeks by Scott Ryan, a meticulously researched account of the final weeks of David Letterman's reign as television's longest-running late night host, will be published by FMP on November 6, 2018. The first book to document the TV titan's historic denouement in such an in-depth fashion, The Last Days of Letterman will leave readers with a poignant, informative, and yes, humorous, look inside one of the most beloved talk shows of all time-and the singular comedic talent behind it.Focused on the final 28 telecasts of the Late Show as a lens to Letterman's 33-year career as an icon of late night television, Ryan shares nearly two dozen on-the-record interviews with a veritable Who's Who of Letterman's Late Show writing, directing and producing staff. The book features a foreword by longtime Letterman monologue writer Bill Scheft."I was kind of shocked at how forthcoming the Late Show staff was with all the deeply personal stories and insights they shared," said author Scott Ryan. "This was their life, this was their family, so they cared a great deal about honoring the show's legacy."Ryan's insider account takes readers through the halls of the famed Ed Sullivan Theater, from the fateful day Letterman called his inner circle into his dressing room and dropped the retirement bomb up to the emotional final show on May 20, 2015-and all of the star-studded hoopla in-between. From Oprah Winfrey to Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks to Bob Dylan, the book details in spectacular fashion the ultra A-list line of marquee names that traversed the CBS soundstage during those final weeks.Peppered with carefully curated photographs, the narrative is chock-full of juicy tidbits: how "ultimate fan girl" Sarah Jessica Parker set the tone for what would be a six-week long farewell to Letterman; how Cher personally reached out to the show because she "wanted to do something" for Dave; how Michelle Obama was intent on creating a TV moment in her final Late Show appearance; and the special significance behind Foo Fighters' musical performance at the finale.Ryan also details a barrage of behind-the-scenes facets of the Late Show's enduring mystique: Letterman's legendary rapport with other comedy giants (Don Rickles, Howard Stern, Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Ray Romano, Martin Short, Amy Sedaris-as well as his forever-mentor, Johnny Carson); the exhilarating, maddening, ingenious process of developing the day's infamous "Top Ten" list; and the devilishly clever ways Late Show musical director Paul Shaffer came up with the musical pieces to accompany guests' entrances. There's even a surprise appearance by Rupert Jee, so memorably featured in the show's comedic cutaways to Hello Deli."This was one of the most important shows-and one of the greatest performers-in television history," said Ryan. "I wanted whatever story that ended up being told to be a fitting tribute, and to really do it justice."

You may know him from The Late Show with David Letterman where Bill Scheft served as a writer for 24 years. However, there is much more to this brilliant former stand up comedian. I spoke with Bill recently via Skype from his home in NYC and we had a lot to catch up on. Since his last visit on The Bob and Tom Show Bill had lost his job following Letterman’s retirement. An even bigger blow was dealt when his wife, a pioneering figure amongst female comics, Adrianne Tolsch died after a long illness. We start the show talking about these two important topics. And not without a few laughs even when the subject is far from funny. Dealing with grief is such an individual process and Bill is gracious enough to share how he is coping. I can give you a hint. He is blessed with a wonderful support group including friends and family. Oh and the 29 yr old niece who now shares his apartment complete with a pet bunny named Albert. (yes there is a story there) The novelist, Bill Scheft announces his latest project: “Is It Everything I Said”, Tommy Dash Apologizes. A collection of installments featuring a fictionalized stand up comic named Tommy Dash. Stories based on real situations either he or other comedians have encountered in their careers. Then we discuss music. His band The Truants performs in and around NYC playing British Invasion music and nothing after 1967. They DO NOT play “Do the Freddy” by Freddy and the Dreamers. (Take that Tom Griswold!) And they are available for your private party! Find out more at thetruantslive.com. Bill shares a great Paul McCartney story and touring with the band Tower of Power. Bill is now working on 2 projects for satellite radio including a podcast interviewing comics about relationships. TAKE MY NOSE PLEASE is a seriously funny and wickedly subversive look at the role comedy has played in exposing the pressures on women to be attractive and society’s desire/shame relationship with plastic surgery. More than 15 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the US in 2014.  And 90% of them on were done on women. Yet, for those who elect to tinker with Mother Nature, especially for high-profile women, plastic surgery is still a very dark secret.  Funny women, though, are the exception.  From Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers to Roseanne Barr and Kathy Griffin, comedians have been unashamed to talk about their perceived flaws, and the steps taken to remedy them. TAKE MY NOSE PLEASE follows two comedians as they deliberate about going under the knife. Emily Askin, an up-and coming improv performer, has always wanted her nose refined. Jackie Hoffman, a seasoned headliner on Broadway and on TV, considers herself ugly and regrets not having the nose job offered in her teens. And maybe she’d like a face-lift, as well. As we follow their surprisingly emotional stories, we meet other who have taken the leap - or held out. Putting it all in perspective are psychologists, sociologists, the medical community and cultural critics. And for comic relief and the profundity only comedians can supply.  The film includes commentary from Roseanne Barr, Phyllis Diller, the late Joan Rivers,Judy Gold, Julie Halston, Lisa Lampanelli, Giulia Rozzi, Bill Scheft, and Adrianne Tolsch. Director Joan Kroc joins us to talk her engaging. lively, funny and enlightening debut film. For news and updates go to: takemynoseplease.com

This is a very funny interview that you won't want to miss.Novelist, columnist, television writer. During the last three decades, Bill Scheft has established himself as a versatile, singular and influential comedic voice.Scheft’s critically acclaimed first novel, THE RINGER (2002), the story of a 35-year-old hired gun softball player whose life changes when he has to take care of his infirm sportswriter uncle, was optioned for film by United Artists, for whom he wrote the screen adaptation. His second novel, TIME WON’T LET ME (2005), chronicled the chaotic resurrection of the prep school garage band The Truants, whose members try to reunite 30 years after learning the album they recorded in 1967 is worth $10,000. TIME WON’T LET ME was a finalist for the 2006 Thurber Prize for American Humor, the nation’s highest honor for literary humor. His third novel, EVERYTHING HURTS (2009) introduced the world to self-proclaimed “self-help fraud” Phil Camp, who accidentally achieved international acclaim writing under the pseudonym Marty Fleck and now tries to seek relief from his unexplained chronic pain through the aid of another self-help guru, Dr. Samuel Abrun. Publishers Weekly raved: “Scheft scewers physical and emotional pain with a mercilessly comic touch and a bit of poignancy.” And Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo marveled, “How rare it is for a novel to be both hilarious and profoundly moving.”His latest and most ambitious work, SHRINK THYSELF (Rare Bird Books) came out in the summer of 2014.
