Welcome to our new series, “The Beat Goes On,” where we will celebrate the work and enduring influence of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and the other writers whom we identify as “The Beats.” - that crop of artists who worked to expand our consciousness, exploring the hidden possibilities of post WW2 America in the 1950s - Other significant names to be explored: Diane Di Prima, Tuli Kupferberg, Ed Sanders, Delmore Schwarz, Anne Waldman, Carolyn Cassidy, and many others. We will also include jazz musicians like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, whose sinuous Bebop lines influenced the expansive prose of Kerouac and poetry of Ginsberg, and comedians like Lenny Bruce, Lord Buckley, Brother Theodore and Dick Gregory with their scathing critique and unmasking of our nation's hypocrisy beneath the self-deceptive rhetoric of American exceptionalism. And, then there are their artistic children like Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, Tom Waits and Lou Reed…. The list goes on.First off: we need to define that confusing term “beat”… Once the satirists were able to pin them down, the Beats and their devotees were labelled “Beatniks” (a cold war epithet) and put into a farcical box. This is where I, as a child, first became aware of them through the character of Maynard G. Krebs on the Dobie Gillis show. The child-like, pre-hippie with the dirty sweatshirt and goatee, indelibly played by Bob Denver, later of Gilligan fame. He was a gentle figure of fun, not to be taken seriously. But, the truth goes so much deeper. Kerouac defined Beat as short for “beatitude” - a state of grace, a codex for the maturing “peace and love” Baby Boom generation coming up - those in search of existence's deeper meaning beyond the consumerist and war-like American culture being offered as our only option.Well, boy, do we need them now! HENRY MILLER INTERVIEWOur inaugural offering is a 1964 interview with the writer Henry Miller, of TROPIC OF CANCER, TROPIC OF CAPRICORN, and THE ROSY CRUCIFIXION TRILOGY fame, among many others. This is an insightful, in depth look at a artist of gargantuan influence. Miller was interviewed by Audrey June Wood in Minneapolis during a speaking tour; he considered this interview to be one of his best. Miller discourses on some of his favorite books and authors and the struggle of writing well. It was released on Smithsonian/ Folkways Records.Strictly speaking, Miller was not a Beat - he preceded them, and out lived many of them, making it to 88 in 1980, but he was their spiritual and artistic pathfinder.Living hand to mouth, on the edge, abroad in Paris, writing free form in a raw, explicit, semi-autobiographical manner, telling the truth about sex, love, art, and struggle - he set the artistic compass for the Beats - as Dostoevsky and Walt Whitman had done before him. They are all part of a chain - a chain of searchers, and we are fortunate to have these lights to guide us on our own personal journeys to self realization. Please enjoy…THE BEAT GOES ON.
This week's pick has been on our Matty Lilly Birthday Episode Wish List for years — and now it's finally time for Scooby-Doo (2002) to have its day on Spooky Island. A live-action flick with an iconic cast that brings one of television's most famous cartoons to the big screen, this movie went through about a million different tweaks and rewrites before it finally made its debut. Not only was it toned down from an R-rated adult comedy to a PG that still managed to be pretty provocative (or, as Scoob might say, ruhrohcative), it also got a lot less gay. Not totally no gay, though — and given that it's got a full, feature-length, starring-role dose of Matthew Lillard, we're pretty sure this is going to be one of our most special installments of Spooky Tuesday so far. EPISODE 66 - “WHEN CLASSIC FILM'S SUPPORTING ACTORS STEAL THE SHOW” - 12/16/2024 There is nothing quite like watching a film when suddenly a supporting character comes in and walks away with the film. (Think THELMA RITTER, S.Z. SAKALL, or GALE SONDERGAARD in almost every one of their films!) This week we are focusing on some of our favorite supporting charters who come in and snatch that scene right about from under the big stars. From JOANNA BARNES' Gloria Upson declaring, “It was just ghastly!” in “Auntie Mame” to the impassioned monologue about love that BEAH RICHARDS delivers to SPENCER TRACY in “Guess Who's Coming To Dinner,” we take a fun look at these powerful performances that we're still talking about today. This week's tribute is for Ryan O'Neill. Son of a screenwriter and actress, O'Neill first trained to be an amateur boxer before discovering his passion for acting. Starting out as an extra and stuntman, he moved from Germany to the United States and made his first television appearance as a guest star on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. After his role in the soap opera Peyton Place, he began finding success in films like Love Story (1970), What's Up, Doc? (1972), and many more! For our final episode about The Beats, we touch on the TV debut of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis and the introduction of character Maynard G. Krebs. We jump into berets, bongos, sunglasses, sandals and the slang. Where did this popular notion – The Beatnik – come from? While some of it was rooted in reality, this caricature came from a combination of hangers-on and mainstream culture's response to not understanding The Beats. - - - - - Visit our full episode page for show notes, the visual examples we discuss, additional links and more! https://www.twodesignerswalkintoabar.com/episodes/episode-48-beat-myths - - - - - Have a question or idea for Todd and Elliot? Today, let's go back to a No. 1 comedy variety show, “Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In.” Jo Anne Worley was one of the stars of “Laugh-In.” She has worked in TV, films, game shows, cartoons, and theater. Jo Anne was in Milwaukee, appearing at the Melody Top Theater in “Gypsy.” She was in the original production of “Hello Dolly.” She played the Wicked Witch of the West in the musical production the “Wizard of Oz.” Her many television appearances included “The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis” and “Love American Style.”
WHAT THE F**K WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?HOW NOW DOW JONES by The Original Cast (RCA, 1967)This is the second Broadway soundtrack that Captain Billy has covered, the first being Lerner and Loewe's Camelot, and even though as a small child I had memorized my parent's Oliver, The Sound of Music, and My Fair Lady albums, after Rock, Folk and Soul music entered my life, I lost interest in the musicals of the Great White Way completely. As I explained in previous episodes, many of the carts in my collection were not chosen by me; they arrived in big lots, and the experience of discovering some of these hidden treasures is akin to sticking one's hand into a bag of….. (fill in the blank). Despite its catchy title, this show was totally unknown to me, although it did run for 220 performances. It was produced and directed by Broadway titans David Merrick and George Abbott. It was film scorer Elmer Bernstein's only Broadway composition; the book was by Max Shulman, of Dobie Gillis fame, and the lyrics were by Carolyn Leigh — a totally respectable crew. The cast included Woody Allen's avatar, Tony Roberts, and the whiskey throated Brenda Vaccaro in the leads, and there was even a Tony awarded to featured actor Hiram Sherman for his turn as a crusty stock broker. Yet, somehow the collective memory of this musical was lost to the ozone pretty quickly. Maybe it's the complicated plot- (It was always part of the charm of these albums to try and imagine the story as I listened) - but here the labyrinthian plot and convoluted conjunction of characters - (tycoons, stock brokers, government officials, suicidal, mismatched lovers, tour guides, and “the voice of Wall Street”) - had my Pandemic-addled brain yearning for a YouTube training video. There was a hit that emerged from the chaos, “Step to the Rear”, which you might recognize: it was even used in a Lincoln-Mercury campaign, and there is a charming video of Tony Roberts with a stage full of investor ladies from the suburbs marching around the stage to the song.Give this recording a try, and see if you can figure it all out.

The Bob Cummings Show (also known as Love That Bob) is an American sitcom starring Bob Cummings, which was broadcast from January 2, 1955, to September 15, 1959. The Bob Cummings Show was the first series to debut as a midseason replacement. The program began with a half-season run on NBC, then ran for two full seasons on CBS, and returned to NBC for its final two seasons. The program was later rerun on ABC daytime and then syndicated under the title Love That Bob. A similar (but less successful) follow-up series, The New Bob Cummings Show, was broadcast on CBS during the 1961–62 television season. Overview. The series stars Cummings as dashing Hollywood photographer, Air Force reserve officer, and ladies' man, Bob Collins. The character's interest in aviation and photography mirrored Cummings' own, with his character's name the same as the role he played in the 1945 film You Came Along. The series also stars Rosemary DeCamp as his sister Margaret MacDonald. In some episodes, Cummings also doubled as Bob and Margaret's grandfather, Josh Collins of Joplin, Missouri. The Bob Cummings Show was important in the development of several careers including series creator, producer, and head writer Paul Henning. Henning, who a decade earlier was a major force in the character development and writing of The Burns and Allen television and radio shows, was a co-producer with George Burns of the Cummings show. He later produced such major 1960s hits as The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres. Regulars in the show included Ann B. Davis, who twice won Emmy Awards for playing Bob Collins' assistant Schultzy. Henning apparently remembered cast members Nancy Kulp and Joi Lansing favorably, giving both of them roles several years later on The Beverly Hillbillies, Kulp as Miss Hathaway (secretary to banker Milburn Drysdale — a character similar to Pamela Livingstone, the one she played on Cummings' show) – and Lansing as Gladys Flatt, wife of Lester Flatt. A decade after The Bob Cummings Show left the air, Davis went on to play the housekeeper Alice in The Brady Bunch. In the 1995 film The Brady Bunch Movie, which featured another actress playing Alice, Davis reprised the role of Schultzy for a cameo that suggests the character went on to become a truck driver. Olive Sturgess appeared in 12 episodes as Carol Henning, girlfriend to Bob's nephew, Chuck. Versatile character actress Kathleen Freeman appeared in six episodes as Bertha Krause. Perhaps the biggest career boost was received by young Dwayne Hickman, a student at Loyola University in Los Angeles, who appeared as the nephew and became a favorite with young female viewers. During the last season of The Bob Cummings Show, he was cast as the lead in CBS's The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. This program represented the height of Cummings' television career. Although he later starred in two other early-'60s series, The New Bob Cummings Show and My Living Doll, and made guest appearances on several other TV series, he never again achieved that level of success on television. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dwight-allen/message
In the early 1960s, one of America's most popular teenagers was an actor who wasn't even a teenager . Dwayne Hickman played the clean cut, girl. Crazy, likable lead in the TV sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. After the series ended, Hickman appeared in several beach movies alongside such figures as Frankie Avalon and Annette Funiciello. Later, he became a television executive, working with CBS on many iconic TV series In 1994 Hickman wrote a memoir, and that's when I have the chance to meet him.

David Johansen is one of the all-time front men in music and an artist who keeps changing the game – not by degrees but by solar systems. In the 1980s, he had everyone feeling “Hot, Hot, Hot” as Buster Poindexter. Then he showed up as the taxi-driving Ghost of Christmas Past in the Bill Murray film Scrooged. Before all this, he was the glammed-up lead singer of The New York Dolls, the mythic rock band of the downtown NYC scene of the 1970s. Hard rock, punk rock, glam rock, heavy metal – the Dolls sit atop a lot of family trees. To this day, whatever room he walks into, from loft spaces to the swanky Café Carlyle, David Johansen owns it. In part one of this epic two-part interview, David talks with host Kevin Burke about coming of age on Staten Island in the 1950s and ’60s, a kid riding bikes, buying and listening to records, going to Catholic School, joining a band, and graduating from high school at the height of the Vietnam War. How did he get from the house his grandfather built on the North Shore to the pulsating East Village at the dawn of an era he’d help define? This is the origin story of a true original. If you listen to this podcast, you’ve probably noticed that Scooby-Doo’s resident brainiac, Velma Dinkley, can read as a little queer. It’s all subtext and implication, really, but what if we told you there is a canonical connection between Velma and lesbian pop culture? Listen as we unmask her, in true Scooby-Doo style, to reveal that Velma is actually Zelda Gilroy, a character on the 1960s teen sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis — and Zelda, in turn, is Sheila Keuhl, all-around badass, a queer trailblazer in California politics and someone who’s still serving Angelenos today. Murder, My Dude returns from a lengthy hiatus to cover the basics of what is likely the most famous political assassination of the 20th Century: the 1963 murder of President John F. Kennedy. While it's impossible to fully explore every angle of the assassination in a single podcast, this episode provides a good launching point, covering the official story as well as several prominent conspiracy theories. But before that, we take one of our signature detours as Jackson gets into his newest obsession: the classic Kennedy era sitcom Dobie Gillis, as well as a quick look at This Week (well, month) in Murder. Sitting in drawers unmade because YOU (yes, you!) would rather go see superheroes and CGI lions at your local bijou! Okay, that might be hyperbole. Might, I tell you. IT’s that’s time again, yep, the Nerds are here with another fantastic episode of random pop culture news. So please ensure your seats are in the upright position and trays are folded away as we are expecting to experience turbulence. This week we are taking a look at Western Australia with Buck. Apparently NASA and the European Space Agency are spending time there in preparation for their upcoming missions to Mars. Apparently it is as close as you can get to Mars conditions without going there. Just with super spikey Spinnefex grass to poke holes in your clothes, body, and anything else you put near it. This stuff is more painful than a cactus. But the main reason why NASA and the ESA have scientist out here isn’t for an all-expenses paid holiday. No, they are here to work. What is that work, well it is the first topic so listen in.Next we hear about a bunch of dead beats who didn’t pay a kid for his hard work making an awesome game. That’s right, a gaming studio has actually shown themselves to be a bigger bunch of scumbags then a politician on the campaign trail. Apparently they only have a small number of employees though, so it was all just some misunderstanding. Wait a minute, hold on, Buck hit’s a sore point here and makes sense in regards to what the dirtbags are up to. Of course this is utterly outrageous, particularly if he is right; my goodness, if he is we’ll never hear the end of it. But if he is, oh the humanity, oh no, this is devastating. But if you want to know more of what I am rambling on about then you know what to do, that’s right, listen in.At the sound of Tinker Bell waving her magic wand please turn the page… ohh, um, wait a second, are you still here? Dang nabbit! Well in that case We have the DJ for you with a story about a new spin-off for the terminator. Honarable mentions to Gilligan's Island, Leave it to Beaver, and Dobie Gillis. Dave Navarro's hit SPIKE TV show, Ink Master, is mentioned, and the show wraps with a heated E.T. discussion. Are those welcoming aliens at the end of E.T. his parents, botanists, or parent botanists? You decide! Damage to your nether regions is unavoidable.
This episode features Vincent Price, Frankie Avalon’s helmet hair and a very bad song from The Supremes. Thanks to guest reviewer Sally Ann for taking time out of her busy season to join us! Interested in watching the film? Peep it on Amazon. Watch on iTunes. On with the show! Frowner Sausages may remember Sally from a couple of Montreal Sauce shows, S2E013 and S2E014. (It’s not an insult, Montreal Sauce fans on Twitter chose the name Sausages, for themselves!) Sally shares movie memories from different genres, Platoon & Annie. Chris gets Casualties of War mixed up with Platoon. We all regret Oliver Stone, but love Willem Dafoe & Forest Whitaker. What are these beach party films? The awful theme song by The Supremes and the opening claymation credits by Gumby’s Art Clokey. That song is thankfully absent from an album in Chris’ collection, Spy Magazine Presents, Vol. 1: Spy Music. First cameo in the film is Killer Croc! Frankie Avalon plays Jack Tripper with his costar in backwards clothes like Kriss Kross. Before Gilligan and before Dr. Goldfoot, there was The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Chris drops some film terminology on ya, Mise en scène. If you’re not interested in the sequel Dr. Goldfoot & the Girl Bombs, perhaps you would like the TV show, The Wild Weird World of Dr. Goldfoot. WHAT? Some of the torture scenes were borrowed from other Vincent Price films, like Pit and the Pendulum. Sally & Chris agree that Michael Cera and Jessie Eisenberg are interchangeable. During the car chase, geography becomes surreal? Fans in Grand Rapids, MI probably feel the same way about the car chase in 30 Minutes or Less. Chris compares the film to Gilligan’s Island & Beverly Hillbillies while Paul nails it, describing it as a very long episode of Get Smart. Sally recommends Palo Alto as “the complete opposite of this film” we watched. Paul is excited because The Wizard of Oz has been remastered and looks gorgeous. Guilty PleasureFebruary 1, 2010 http://goodies.wizardacademypress.com/MMM100201-GuiltyPleasure.mp3 (Listen) http://mondaymemo.wpengine.com/?ShowMe=Casino (A) January 27, 2010: It's weird when you think about it: Apple releases the iPad just as Salinger breathes his last. It feels like the ending of a play. J.D. Salinger and Jack Kerouac were the tortured voices that led us into forbidden places in our minds. We followed them, spellbound, as they sauntered into dark rooms we would never have entered alone. Then Salinger's Holden Caulfield shuffled onto the big screen as James Dean and gave us brooding angst in Rebel Without a Cause and Kerouac's Dean Moriarty bopped onto the little screen as Maynard G. Krebs and gave us freedom of expression in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. America said, “The movie was good, but the book was better.” But America has since changed her mind. Today she says, “Out with the old literature!” that requires focused attention as you experience a story in the quiet of your mind. “In with the new literature!” that requires nothing from you but to sit, slack-jawed and drooling as flashing images enter your brain. Joseph Brodsky saw this day coming and tried to do something about it. When he was named Poet Laureate in 1991, Brodsky proposed a populist poetry initiative that might “turn this nation into an enlightened democracy… before literacy is replaced with videocy.” Methinks it may be too late, Joseph. The glittering iPad promises movies, TV shows and YouTube videos at our fingertips, 24 hours a day, wherever we happen to be. No need to carry a pill bottle. Just touch the screen and go unconscious. This tablet is electronic. Yes, I'll buy one. Of course I will. And I will feel sad. Roy H. Williams
