Everything is Beautiful, Everything Hurts – Josie Shapiro  Mickey Bloom: five foot tall, dyslexic, and bullied at school. Mickey knows she's nothing special. Until one day, she discovers running.  Mickey's new-found talent makes her realise she's everything she thought she wasn't – powerful, strong and special. But her success comes at a cost, and the relentless training and pressure to win leaves Mickey broken, her dream in tatters.  Years later, when Mickey is working in a dead-end job with a drop-kick boyfriend, her mother becomes seriously ill. After nursing her, Mickey realises the only way she can overcome her grief – and find herself – is to run again.  A chance encounter with a stranger sees Mickey re-ignite her dreams. The two women form an unbreakable bond, as Mickey is shown what it means to run in the right direction.  The Forgotten Girls – Monica Potts  An unforgettable story of friendship and lost promise in 21st-century America  Growing up gifted and working-class in the foothills of the Ozarks, Monica and Darci became fast friends. The girls bonded over a shared love of learning as they navigated the challenges of their declining town and tumultuous family lives - broken marriages, shuttered stores and factories. They pored over the giant map in their classroom, tracing their fingers over the world that awaited them, vowing to escape. In the end, Monica left Clinton for university and fulfilled her dreams. Darci, along with many in their circle of friends, did not.  Years later, working as a journalist covering poverty, Monica discovered what she already intuitively knew about the women in Arkansas. Their life expectancy had steeply declined - the sharpest such fall in a century. She returned to Clinton to report the story, trying to understand the societal factors driving disturbing trends in the rural south. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kiwi author Josie Shapiro's award-winning debut explores the pleasure and pain of athletic success.  Everything is Beautiful and Everything Hurts tells the story of Mickey Bloom, an awkward, bullied child who finds freedom and opportunity in running- until she's pushed to the brink. This book awarded author Josie Shapiro the Allen & Unwin Prize for Commercial Fiction. She says she was inspired by the feeling of pushing herself physically through amateur running and wanted to capture that feeling in words. "I wasn't like my character Mickey, I wasn't an amazing, fantastic champion and I was never as fast as she is. But I love that feeling of pushing myself physically."  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Everything Is Beautiful and Everything Hurts by Josie Shapiro. Winner of the inaugural Allen and Unwin Commercial Fiction prize to try to encourage and recognise more local commercial fiction. A very worthy winner - I loved it - about Mickey Bloom who's a shy, awkward, dyslexic kid who doesn't fit in anywhere - and then she discovers running and it's the one thing she's good at. Eventually though, it all wears her don and she gives up, until after the death of her mother when it becomes cathartic. Set against the background of the Auckland marathon it's beautifully done - I'm not a runner, never have been and never will be but I loved it.  The Wager by David Grann. Nonfiction - In 1740, a British Man O' War named HMS Wager set sail in search of a Spanish galleon reputed to be carrying vast amounts of treasure. An initial crew of 250 men set out but after ferocious storms around Cape Horn, running aground off Patagonia, starvation, disease and bitter infighting, only 145 survived – and many more died as one group abandoned the other and both went on to further hardship. Full of fascinating details about the workings of a Man O' War, the miseries of their mission and the trial which came about after accusations of mutiny, it's utterly compelling.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Traumatic brain injury can change your entire relationship with the outside world. That's what happened to Razi, who has sustained multiple concussions throughout his life starting in college, but suffered his worst concussion in 2019, right before the pandemic. When that happened, he was completely knocked out of his normal routine: for months, all he could do was sit in the bathtub with no light, maybe a candle. He likens this experience to going back to the womb. But it also highlighted to him how much the modern world we have built is constantly at war with our bodies and our biology: for example, artificial light is a fairly recent phenomenon in human history, and our almost constant exposure to it is so vastly different from the "natural" light environment we evolved to be in, where the sun shines so many different kinds of light on us throughout the day that our biological clocks have grown to be naturally attuned to. And artificial light has forced us to ignore these biological signals we evolved to have to be able to be productive and entertained long into the night. Another example is being able to travel around in cars and trains: modern transportation is very loud, can go very fast, and for most animals would be a relatively scary and traumatizing experience that we have completely grown accustomed to. It makes you think about how many other things in our daily lives condition us to ignore signals from our own bodies. We will continue this conversation next week in Part 2 of the concussion episode. The Mavs lost Game 3, which sucks. We talked about some adjustments the Clippers made that helped them win this game. We also talked about what went wrong for the Mavericks and what they need to do in Game 4. (Fair warning: If you’re a Kristaps Porzingis fan, it’s probably best to not listen to this episode. It’s not all Kristaps hate, but I do think that was a key to the loss.)

Today on the Chronically Healing Podcast I have Christopher Blakeslee on the show! Christopher’s story is truly one you will not want to miss (promise I’m not just saying that!) Christopher has been dealing with chronic illness (interstitial cystitis, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, occipital and trigeminal nerve irritation) and chronic pain for 24 years and when I say he’s been through the ringer, I mean it! During the episode, Christopher takes us through his struggle with chronic, excruciating pain and the different things he did to try to heal (or even just manage the pain during that time.) It’s hard to believe the person on the podcast was going through that much pain not that long ago. We talked about the different modalities, medications and failed attempts he had during his healing journey before he was finally able to find things that worked. Christopher is now a health coach and consultant, plus he’s writing a book with the doctor who helped him on his way. I can’t wait for you to hear this story, so listen in and let us know what you think! In today’s episode we chat about: Belinda's story and what brought her to Hawaiian healing Teaching under Tony Robbins and doing fire walks How to best talk to your body so you can heal and live your best life How do you start to change that pattern of speaking to yourself in a negative way Belinda's training in Hawaiian healing as well as her other teachings Hawaiian forgiveness process: "I'm sorry, I love you, I forgive you, Thank you" All about her book, "Find Your Friggen' Joy" and where she came up with the name Cleaning the plaque of your soul Links and things… Christopher's Website Christopher's Instagram Jessie's Instagram Chronically Healing Facebook Group

Cassie makes a new friend! A weird little girl with a yeerk in her brain! Cassie is Betty Draper! Or Rachel is! Either way, she snapped! Tyler makes insensitive comments. HE MIGHT BE STILL ON MARS by Paul Dalzell He Might Be Still On Mars is a thriller set in the latter years of the 26th Century. Mankind has spread out into the rocky planets of the Solar System and the rocky moons of the Gas Giants such as Jupiter and Saturn. Despite light speed and near light speed travel, the number of people emigrating to these new worlds is in the doldrums. This lack of enthusiasm is driven primarily by the savagery of raids by pirate chief, Wilson Black. Powerful politician and scientist, Stella Ling, sends Owen Bone and his Synthetic partner Sandi Shaw on a manhunt for an absconded husband, Freddie Ling. This is camouflage for a plan to eliminate Wilson Black. Owen and Sandi are subject to terrifying injuries and stresses that test what it means to be human and Synth. In overcoming these challenges, they find help in the most unlikely places, leading to a showdown with Black in the frozen remote taiga forest of Siberia. Paul Dalzell has lived and worked in the Asia-Pacific region for nearly 50 years as a fishery biologist and manager. He comes from West Yorkshire, England, and currently lives in Hawaii. His two previous novels, The Last Dream Before You Die and Everything Hurts weave reality and legend about vampires, and feature a retired detective, Jack Bone, who is befriended and helped by a vampire family. Subsequent novels, recently published, are The Friends of Eddy Relish, a modern day thriller, where a failed British actor finds a path to redemption and fame again, as long as he keeps one step ahead of his enemies and Pax Britannica a thriller set in a counterfactual history. The British Empire monopoly on nuclear weapons is challenged by the theft of five atom bombs. Imperial Secret Service Chief, Sir Anthony Raja, summons Mick Doyle to recover the missing weapons, suspected to be hidden in a German gold mine in British New Guinea. https://www.amazon.com/He-Might-Be-Still-Mars/dp/1734605502/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=paul+dalzell&qid=1608315374&s=books&sr=1-1 http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/newagelitag1.mp3

Welcome to Episode 3 of The Rest Room! In the last episode, we looked at ways to address the barriers that come up when figuring out how to start incorporating movement and exercise into your life. We learned that we need to throw the whole ‘workout’ mentality in the bin, especially if movement is new to you, but we didn’t cover how to get started in really practical, tangible ways. Whether you have little confidence in your body’s ability to do the things that you need (and want!) to do day-to-day, or you struggle to find a way to make movement a sustainable part of your life, this episode is for you! Our aim is to help you find a way to move that feels safe, and that you’re confident you can stick with, even if it needs to be adapted on more challenging days.  There is no doubt that this work is hard. It takes courage, patience and persistence.  I hope this will give you a really tangible place to start thinking about your own movement practice.  Remember, It doesn’t matter how slowly you need to go. If you're consistent, you’ll still be building habits that will hopefully enable you to do what matters in your life. *One thing I forgot to mention in the episode is that when you're figuring out what your "normal" is, it's important to seek help if something new pops up, even if you have learned coping strategies! Total Body Meltdown: Where Nothing Works and Everything Hurts describes the current state of health of many of our customers who are trapped in a health care system that is more about the system than about the care. Traditionally, when you are suffering Total Body Meltdown, you are shunted into a system that separates you into body parts, treating each part individually with an FDA-approved drug or surgery. As you will see, we put the “care” back in Health Care with my Total Body ReSet, which is designed to relieve you of the stress of thinking that your Total Body Meltdown is due to a dozen different health conditions; that your genes are malfunctioning; or that you need extensive medical testing; and dozens of drugs and supplements. In Total Body Meltdown and The 65 Reasons Why I’m going to discuss how to ReSet Your Body to its Default Setting of Total Health; The Layers of Illness; The Downward Spiral; and The Sixty-Five Magnesium Deficiencies that are often misdiagnosed as individual diseases. I will also show how each of these symptoms begins at the same starting points – Magnesium Deficiency and Yeast Overgrowth. With a combination of luck, commonsense, and decades of research, I’ve come to these conclusion and managed to implement a protocol that ReSets the body at the cellular level and allows its natural healing power to “be in the driver’s seat."

It's probably no stretch to say that this is the worst start to a season in Colorado Rockies franchise history, and that's because of one thing: expectations. It's also cool that SCIENCE released the first pictures ever taken of a black hole this week because that's pretty much what the 2019 baseball season has felt like so far.FEAR NOT, loyal listener! Things will (maybe?) be fine (or they might not be, actually). We'll discuss some of the reasons the Rockies find themselves mired in a 3-10 start, what is to blame, how to cope with it, and -- most importantly -- some ways perhaps to get out of it. There are still some positive things to look at in the brutal beginning to this year, so we'll put a spotlight on those for a minute, but yeah, everything else feels pretty rough. We'd love to tell you that this is just a blip on the radar screen and all will be well, but the thing about baseball is that you never really know how anything is going to go. That's beautiful when things are going well. It's agonizing when they're not. Still, we'll suffer (and hopefully cheer) through it all with you.Plus we debut a new segment called "Let's Remember Some Rockies" this week, which we thoroughly enjoyed and hope you will, too. It's the 161st episode of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast. Pull it out of the Nintendo and blow in the cartridge and restart it for hopefully a better outcome!

Painsomnia the difficulty of falling and staying asleep when dealing with chronic pain is a real challenge for painiacs. Research shows that one of the most important predictors for pain intensity is the number of hours slept the night before. If you sleep poorly, your pain will likely be worse the next day. Years ago, when the pain I live with was at its worst, I was unable to lie down flat in a bed. My back was so rigid and contorted in spasms that In fact, it was so impossible for me to lit flat that I had to get an MRI under anesthesia so that I could fit inside of the MRI machine. I would dread going to sleep at night. Whenever it would get dark, I would tense up and get nervous about the idea of trying to go to sleep. I started to develop simple practices that helped me find comfort, which started to change my sleep habits. In preparation for this episode, I asked some of our Painiac community members to share their personal tips for sleeping well with chronic pain. I hope that this episode offers you some new and creative ways to rest better and sleep well. So grab a cup of tea or a cozy blanket and curl up while we explore the world of sleep.

In addition to writing for Letterman, Bill also wrote for the Oscars, ESPYs and almost every other major awards show, and he also contributed a popular weekly humor column to Sports Illustrated for a number of years. Bill Scheft is known for his writing for Late Night and The Late Show with David Letterman. He has written several novels including The Ringer, Shrink Thyself, and Time Won't Let Me. In this episode Bill shares the stories from his career including stories about the late Don Rickles, working on The Late Show, his talented wife Adrianne Tolsch, his band The Truants, his various novels, the new documentary 'Take my nose...Please', and so much more. Later in the episode Bill gives some incredible tips for writers. It has been a dream come true to interview Bill. This is a very funny interview that you won't want to miss.Novelist, columnist, television writer. During the last three decades, Bill Scheft has established himself as a versatile, singular and influential comedic voice.Scheft’s critically acclaimed first novel, THE RINGER (2002), the story of a 35-year-old hired gun softball player whose life changes when he has to take care of his infirm sportswriter uncle, was optioned for film by United Artists, for whom he wrote the screen adaptation. His second novel, TIME WON’T LET ME (2005), chronicled the chaotic resurrection of the prep school garage band The Truants, whose members try to reunite 30 years after learning the album they recorded in 1967 is worth $10,000. TIME WON’T LET ME was a finalist for the 2006 Thurber Prize for American Humor, the nation’s highest honor for literary humor. His third novel, EVERYTHING HURTS (2009) introduced the world to self-proclaimed “self-help fraud” Phil Camp, who accidentally achieved international acclaim writing under the pseudonym Marty Fleck and now tries to seek relief from his unexplained chronic pain through the aid of another self-help guru, Dr. Samuel Abrun. Publishers Weekly raved: “Scheft scewers physical and emotional pain with a mercilessly comic touch and a bit of poignancy.” And Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo marveled, “How rare it is for a novel to be both hilarious and profoundly moving.”His latest and most ambitious work, SHRINK THYSELF (Rare Bird Books) came out in the summer of 2014. Charlie Traub leaves therapy to try and live a non-psychological life. Which would be great if he could shake his former therapist, who turns out to be, uh, nuts. Despite all unexamined evidence to the contrary, Charlie just may be unable to accept that wherever he goes, there he is.In addition to his long-form fiction, Scheft is widely known for his weekly humor column, “The Show,” which appeared in Sports Illustrated for three years. A collection of his columns, THE BEST OF THE SHOW, was published in 2005. Before coming to Sports Illustrated, Scheft spent two and a half years at ESPN Magazine writing a similar column, called “The Monologue.”Scheft’s love of sportswriting came from his uncle, the legendary golf writer Herbert Warren Wind. In 2011, he edited and wrote the foreword to a collection of Wind’s seminal essays, AMERICA’S GIFT TO GOLF: HERBERT WARREN WIND ON THE MASTERS.After twelve years touring as a stand-up comedian, Scheft was hired as a monologue writer for Late Night with David Letterman where he remained until the show's conclusion in May, 2015. During his 24 years with Letterman, he was nominated for 16 Emmys. Which, ah, means he never won.A frequent creative presence on award shows, roasts and television specials, Scheft wrote for the 1995 and 2005 Academy Awards, was the head writer for three ESPY Awards and has contributed special material to the Emmys, Tonys and Grammys.Over the last 20 years, Scheft has contributed humor essays and short pieces to the New Yorker, New York Times, Esquire, TV Guide, George, Talk, Slate, Modern Humorist, the collections Mirth of a Nation, 101 Damnations, May Contain Nuts, Howl, The Enlightened Bracketologist and a few other places that may or may not exist anymore. He is now a regular contributor to the New York Times Book Review. A 1979 graduate of Harvard College, where he majored in Latin because he “thought the church was going to come back,” Scheft began his professional career as a sportswriter for the Albany Times-Union before he came to the realization, “Hey, what the hell am I doing in Albany?” He moved to New York City in December, 1980.Website: http://www.billscheft.com/Tumblr: http://billscheft.tumblr.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/billscheftTake my nose...Please!: http://www.takemynoseplease.com/The Truants: http://www.thetruantslive.com/Vulture: http://nymag.com/author/Bill%20Scheft/Salon: http://www.salon.com/writer/bill_scheft/
