Everything is Beautiful, Everything Hurts – Josie Shapiro Mickey Bloom: five foot tall, dyslexic, and bullied at school. Mickey knows she's nothing special. Until one day, she discovers running. Mickey's new-found talent makes her realise she's everything she thought she wasn't – powerful, strong and special. But her success comes at a cost, and the relentless training and pressure to win leaves Mickey broken, her dream in tatters. Years later, when Mickey is working in a dead-end job with a drop-kick boyfriend, her mother becomes seriously ill. After nursing her, Mickey realises the only way she can overcome her grief – and find herself – is to run again. A chance encounter with a stranger sees Mickey re-ignite her dreams. The two women form an unbreakable bond, as Mickey is shown what it means to run in the right direction. The Forgotten Girls – Monica Potts An unforgettable story of friendship and lost promise in 21st-century America Growing up gifted and working-class in the foothills of the Ozarks, Monica and Darci became fast friends. The girls bonded over a shared love of learning as they navigated the challenges of their declining town and tumultuous family lives - broken marriages, shuttered stores and factories. They pored over the giant map in their classroom, tracing their fingers over the world that awaited them, vowing to escape. In the end, Monica left Clinton for university and fulfilled her dreams. Darci, along with many in their circle of friends, did not. Years later, working as a journalist covering poverty, Monica discovered what she already intuitively knew about the women in Arkansas. Their life expectancy had steeply declined - the sharpest such fall in a century. She returned to Clinton to report the story, trying to understand the societal factors driving disturbing trends in the rural south. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We welcome special guest Kathleen Rude, author and senior facilitator of the Work That Reconnects (a group process that fosters resilience). Kathleen guides us in accessing our resilience and inner strength, shifting our overwhelm, fear, outrage, and grief in these challenging times into compassionate presence and inspired action. Even though we may feel that we don't have enough or aren't capable enough to make a difference in our troubled world, our “not enoughness” can be just enough to bring about change.
In this episode, Christine Hall will chat with our special guest, Kim Huey. Christine and Kim will help you break down Section I. Traumatic brain injury can change your entire relationship with the outside world. That's what happened to Razi, who has sustained multiple concussions throughout his life starting in college, but suffered his worst concussion in 2019, right before the pandemic. When that happened, he was completely knocked out of his normal routine: for months, all he could do was sit in the bathtub with no light, maybe a candle. He likens this experience to going back to the womb. But it also highlighted to him how much the modern world we have built is constantly at war with our bodies and our biology: for example, artificial light is a fairly recent phenomenon in human history, and our almost constant exposure to it is so vastly different from the "natural" light environment we evolved to be in, where the sun shines so many different kinds of light on us throughout the day that our biological clocks have grown to be naturally attuned to. And artificial light has forced us to ignore these biological signals we evolved to have to be able to be productive and entertained long into the night. Another example is being able to travel around in cars and trains: modern transportation is very loud, can go very fast, and for most animals would be a relatively scary and traumatizing experience that we have completely grown accustomed to. It makes you think about how many other things in our daily lives condition us to ignore signals from our own bodies. We will continue this conversation next week in Part 2 of the concussion episode. What do you learn when you fail? Often we are not prepared to take to our own shortcomings, our mistakes, and our errors. Often we rewrite our own motivations with statements like- Sometimes you win sometimes you lose- Hope to win, expect to lose and live with the resultsBut let's face it - some of our losses cause huge amounts of pain. And often we may be tempted to not feel that way again - so we don't try as hard as we could. Our overriding thoughts become one of not to lose, and to make sure we don't have that pain, we choose to not to place efforts into the win.All of our episodes are available at http://todaysleaders.com.au/Please provide feedback and reviews to help our podcast grow.Check out Think & Grow Business for all of your leadership development needs, if you want an individual or team coaching, build better leadership behaviors in your organization, develop high performing teams, the range of programs at think and grow business will certainly help you. Have you ever had a day when you woke up and EVERYTHING hurts? What if the pain was just a signal towards a pathway to power? After waking up feeling like a truck had run over me in my sleep, I found a more powerful answer to the question of pain than "just go back to sleep."
