Today's conversation is with Billionaire businessman David Rubenstein. David started his career as a lawyer before working at the White House under President Jimmy Carter. He now spends his time hosting two shows on Television, "The David Rubenstein Show: Peer to Peer Conversations" on Bloomberg TV and History with David Rubenstein on PBS. He is also focused on philanthropic endeavors with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Gallery of Art, the Council on Foreign Relations, and The Economic Club of Washington, D.C.In his recently released book 'The American Experiment: Dialogues On A Dream,' David Rubenstein explores the American Experiment into democracy, culture, innovation, and ideas through conversations with those impacting our country in various ways. As I sat down with David, we discussed various topics from this book and his life. Ultimately this leads to one question, 'Is the American Experiment and Dream dead?'Early in our conversation David recalls telling Jeff Bezos that Amazon wasn't going anywhere and didn't have a big future. As we continue the discussion we chat about the January 6th insurrection, Diversity, the medium and craft of interviews/conversations, Ken Burns and his insights into history, what it takes to have longevity in what you do, Wynton Marsalis and his views on Jazz and the American Story, Faith in America, and much more. Later in the interview, we look at David's success in the world of business. He gives us a look into what it took to build the Carlyle Group, what the life of a billionaire is actually like, and why philanthropy is so important to him.Join us as we explore the importance of The American Experiment and it's future.LinksWebsite: https://www.davidrubenstein.comThe American Experiment Book: https://amzn.to/3JlwezT
'Innovation Happens at the Edges.' This is a quote that I often reference from today's guest, Jeff DeGraff. Jeff has spent his life exploring, teaching, and sparking creativity and innovation in the lives of those around him. As a teacher at Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan he has helped students understand the practical tools to that unlock that innovation and creativity in their careers. As the co-founder of Innovatriums he helps startups and leading global corporations apply those principles in their product and service development. His new book 'The Creative Mindset: Mastering the Six Skills that Empower Innovation' is quickly becoming a practical handbook and guide to bring those principles from the Ross School of Business and Innovatriums to creators around the world. In the book, Jeff and his business partner / wife Staney take the reader through six skills to move them from the theory of innovation and creativity to the application of these skills in their own daily lives and businesses. This new creator class is redefining the future through positive deviant ideas. Throughtout the interview we learn about the 'CREATE' skills from the book: concentrate, replicate, elaborate, associate, translate, evaluate.Beyond explore the concepts from the book in today's conversation we also take a look at the differences between Innovation and Creativity, how to find 'Ideas that catch you', Why putting the 'New' into the 'Old' will always fail, finding your stream of consciousness..better known as flow, tools to game the system, and why we need to rethink what we are teaching the next generation of creators. My favorite quote from the conversation: 'What if the key to creativity in your life isn't about starting something new? What if it's stopping something old?'Helpful LinksJeff's Website: https://jeffdegraff.comThe Book: https://amzn.to/2TLVBpXJeff on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/degraffjeff/Episode 12 of jumbleThink with Jeff: https://www.jumblethink.com/podcast/episodes/2017/3/3/ep-12-jeff-degraff

April and the Velvet Room Website About April Doyle April Doyle's vast experience in the entertainment industry began with successes in both the acting and modeling fields. Displaying a unique vision and talent as a makeup artist/stylist, April quickly gained recognition in the beauty industry and found herself working with some of most influential names in the business. These talents were added to when April's music career took the forefront with her first real musical endeavor with one of Southern California’s most highly successful show bands. While working with the band April traveled the globe building a name for herself as a top-caliber performer. Her talents, experience, and vision all converged resulting in her next musical endeavor - in the corporate entertainment industry, Haute Chile Productions- which launched in the early 2000s. This slick, high energy showband quickly became one of the top requests in high end, corporate celebrity, socialite, and notable charity events. Comprised of some of the best studio musicians Los Angeles has to offer, HCP has performed for everyone from Hugh Hefner to the Presidential election, including many international performances. HCP has an unrivaled list of credits, client list, notable performances, and has truly carved out its own niche as one of the most successful entities in corporate entertainment. April’s latest project is April and the Velvet Room. The brainchild of April Doyle and producer Kevin Flournoy. What’s special about the Velvet room is you never know who you will see on stage at any given performance, but you will definitely be pleasantly surprised. Some of the industries "who’s who" show up and enhance this “classic-neo-jazz-funk” vibe, with an international touch. At any given performance you will be entertained by the vocal stylings of April as well as different artists who perform regularly with Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Rod Stuart, and Babyface, to name a few.

Many of us run our businesses but are so focused on what we are doing today that we forget to plan for the future. We respond to the emergency of today without ever thinking about how we can grow and innovate our products, services, and message to better impact our customers. Micro-Experiments are a powerful tool because they remove many of the obstacles we face when wanting to step into the dreams and ideas we have for our business. In the first segment we chat about innovation versus inventing. Cari Jenkins is an author, spiritual director, and Executive Director of Urban Skye. Today, Cari shares how hard it was to find a mentor who listened to Jesus, her five years of undoing, and learning to sing the song of identity in Jesus. She found Jesus to be completely faithful, even accounting for her unwillingness to listen. Cari's tender love and experience of him will encourage you to seek his love and your identity in him, too. Listen to Cari's story today! Stories Cari shared: Becoming the Executive Director of Urban Skye and their work Growing up in Omaha, Nebraska in a strong, Christian family Deciding she wanted to love Jesus back at four years old Asking someone in her church how to hear God's voice Meeting a woman who would hear from the Lord and making her a mentor How John 10:10 helps us listen to God's voice Examples of how she has heard God's voice and taken action Paying attention to the what Scripture says about Jesus Praying God would take away anything she placed identity in besides Jesus How she learned her identity is in Jesus Great quotes from Cari: I want to invest in people who want to invest in people. I am untethered much of the time from the things that at one time I put my identity. Identity is the song I'm meant to sing. When we begin to know the voice of the shepherd, we can actually begin to know what does he say about who we are; it will always lead to goodness, truth, and beauty. Always. Marc Alan Schelske is a husband, dad of two, writer, speaker, hobbyist theologian, recovering fundamentalist who drinks tea & rides a motorcycle. He grew up in Ohio, but he's lived in the Northwest long enough to feel like a native. After almost 15 years in ministry, Marc's life took an unexpected turn as he came face to face with depression and near burn-out, nearly losing his family and ministry. With the help of some trusted friends he began the arduous process of emotional and spiritual recovery. This unfolding process has shifted Marc's priorities, resulting in an intense interest in the connection between emotional growth and spiritual growth, and how God works in and through our internal brokenness and trauma. Marc serves as the teaching elder at Bridge City Community Church in Milwaukie, Oregon where he has served for 18 years. Marc writes about intentional spiritual living at www.MarcAlanSchelske.com. He's also the author of The Wisdom of Your Heart: Discovering the God-given Purpose and Power of Your Emotions. Stories Marc shared: Growing up as a Seventh Day Adventist pastor's kid which required a lot of moving The spiritual climate and the identity it created in him How his dad's death changed everything in his life The emotional space he held after his dad's death Realizing that working as an architect wasn't fulfilling him Helping people find freedom in the Gospel Taking a lead pastor role too early in his spiritual development How being so driven impacted his church Entering depression for six months The retreat for pastors with burn out that was a watershed moment Telling his board know his role needed to change How changing his church's structure changed the church How being honest about his brokenness gave his church permission to also me authentic Great quotes from Marc: I'm in a place where my belonging is settled. I was living on credit in relation to my family. The reality that I was living based on performance pulled the rug out from under me. Asking for help is the opposite of performing. Michelle Shaeffer is an award-winning blogger, podcast host, international speaker, author, marketing consultant and human psychology junkie. She grew up a missionary kid in rural Alaska, became a pastor's wife, and then the picture-perfect life fell apart…and along the way discovered that even when we walk away from God, He never gives up on us. Michelle inspires us to keep looking for God in unexpected places because you never know how he will answer your prayers. Listen to Michelle's story above or in your favorite podcast app! Stories Michelle shared: How she helps people start businesses that align with their values Growing up in very rural Alaska How she learned to see the world from other perspectives Getting married at 18 and moving to West Virginia and the struggles they had early on The moment her business was born in a prayer The UPS delivery she didn't expect The bubbles that proved God's love to her Asking about the very nature of God Discovering herself while starting her business Starting her podcast to help people do what they care about Great quotes from Michelle: The biggest thing I was looking for was who accepted you. There are people out there like you who want to do business differently. The fact that somebody I had never met…had listened to God to that degree of preciseness to know not only what I needed but what I wanted, that was the moment that I went, okay, God must be real, he must love me, and there must be more than what I've been taught. When we're willing to open up and share our stories, other people look at it and go “If you made it through then so can I.” I'm glad people didn't give up on me. Cliff Ravenscraft is a motivational speaker, coach, and podcaster who taught podcasting to thousands of people. If you know Cliff, you've probably heard his business journey but I was curious about his spiritual journey. Today, Cliff shares how he was exposed to many streams of Christian faith as a young man, how his characteristic zeal led him on a search for what God required of him, and how he learned to accept and love himself because Christ already did. Cliff's story reminds us that finding ourselves means being in Christ. Please listen to Cliff's story now! Stories Cliff shared: Cliff's mission in life His diverse exposure to various churches as a child His obsession with having a relationship with Jesus and staying out of hell December 9, 1991 as the moment he gave his life to Christ (kinda) Dating Tammy and her parent's requirements Trying to live a perfect life Finally giving up in college and living it up Meeting his future wife Stephanie and sensing the presence of God at her church Receiving a word from God through Bill Grim Becoming an associate pastor in the Nazarene church Giving up on church meetings Meeting David Foster and the advice that changed Cliff's life What living in the freedom of Christ looks like daily Great quotes from Cliff: I'm already enough today to instantly start adding value to other people's lives according to the purpose that God has planned for me. If they're wrong about all this stuff, I wonder if maybe this whole God thing is not as complicated as they've led me to believe that it is. From the time I was a kid I had a passion and a desire to know God and to be known by him, to be accepted and loved. Our faith is not a segment of our life; our life is derived by our identity in Christ. I found myself in Christ and it freed me up to love me. I want to wish you a very happy Thanksgiving week. Many of you have already celebrated with a big turkey, spent time with friends and family, hit the stores and dropped money shopping in the madness of Black Friday, watched your favorite college or pro team play football. We took a moment to be thankful and we are off to the next think. Now we are fully into the holiday season and have past Halloween and Thanksgiving and into our march towards Christmas and New Years we begin to reflect on the past year and look to the future. I want to challenge you to get a leap on 2019 and slow down now. Often we jump into the next year with our bucket list items, our new dreams, the ideas that we will concur but we never come up with a plan to get there. Starting with gratitude and thankfulness is an incredible superpower to propel us into the future we want to create. It’s easy to be thankful when things going well or when life is great, but what happens when things seem grey, bleak, or in ruins. How can you be thankful then? Two of my favorite movies of all time are Holiday Inn and White Christmas…and strangely they talk about this very topic in both movies through their incredible songs. In Holiday Inn Bing Crosby sing’s Irving Berlin’s song ‘I’ve got plenty to be thankful for’. If you don’t know the lyrics, here you go:I've got plenty to be thankful for (Irving Berlin / Bing Crosby : Holiday Inn)I've got plenty to be thankful forI haven't got a great big yachtTo sail from shore to shoreStill I've got plenty to be thankful forI've got plenty to be thankful forNo private car, no caviarNo carpet on my floorStill I've got plenty to be thankful forI've got eyes to see withEars to hear withArms to hug withLips to kiss withSomeone to adoreHow could anybody ask for more?My needs are small, I buy 'em allAt the five and ten cent storeOh, I've got plenty to be thankful forI've got eyes to see withEars to hear withArms to hug withLips to kiss withSomeone to adoreHow could anybody ask for more?My needs are small, I buy 'em allAt the five and ten cent storeOh, I've got plenty to be thankful forAnd in White Christmas Bing Crosby sing’s another of Berlin’s amazing songs… Count your blessings….Count your blessings (Irving Berlin / Bing Crosby : White Christmas)When I'm worried and I can't sleepI count my blessings instead of sheepAnd I fall asleep counting my blessingsWhen my bankroll is getting smallI think of when I had none at allAnd I fall asleep counting my blessingsI think about a nursery and I picture curly headsAnd one by one I count them as they slumber in their bedsSo if you're worried and you can't sleepCount your blessings instead of sheepAnd you'll fall asleep counting your blessingsI know for me the past year has been one of many big victories. It’s been an incredible year of growth for the podcast, I was named an ‘Icon of Influence’ in the podcast space by New Media Summit, our podcast hit number one on iTunes business charts. We’ve also met and become friends so so many incredible people who where guest or connected with us because of the podcast. Beyond the podcast it’s been a hard year in many ways. Transitioning and building a new business can be hard and that is exactly what we’ve been doing with closing down Woodward Design Group, the web agency that I own, and going all in with the new stuff we are doing at jumbleThink. It’s a journey of faith and at times exciting and at other times filled with fear. I know it’s not just me. I can think of many people who have really rough year struggling through financial issues, health, depression over politics, and recently loosing all they had in recent fires. It’s been a great year for many but a rough year for so many others. So how do you stay thankful in seasons of turmoil, disappointment, and devastation? Here are some of the ways that I navigate those seasons of life.Look back at what has been great. Find things that I can be thankful for even in dark seasons.Look for a better futureCelebrate with othersFind small things to be thankful for and celebrate those.Being thankful in difficult seasons can be hard, but it will help motivate you towards the future. Thankfulness has been scientifically proven to be beneficial in life in many way.Opens doors to more relationshipsImproves physical healthImproves psychological healthEnhances empathy and reduces aggressionHelps you sleep betterImproves self-esteemIncreases mental strength Thankfulness is a superpower. I know it can be hard to keep positive and thankful when things get rough, but it will be worth it. So take a moment today and be thankful. Small changes in gratitude will go a long way in your journey of creating your dreams and ideas. Make the choice to stop and reflect. It’s good for you.
