Kevin Stoller is joined by longtime educator and podcast host Steve Miletto to unpack the 1984 film Teachers, a gritty dramedy that offers an unflinching critique of the American public school system. Directed by Arthur Hiller and starring Nick Nolte, Teachers dives headfirst into the dysfunction, bureaucracy, and burnout often hidden behind school walls. Set in a troubled urban high school, the story centers on idealistic teacher Alex Jurel, who's caught between his desire to make a difference and a system that seems determined to maintain the status quo. With subplots involving a mentally ill teacher who was never removed, a student lawsuit, and apathetic staff, the movie blurs the line between satire and sobering reality. Kevin and Steve discuss how many of the themes from Teachers—such as disengaged leadership, systemic failure, and student disillusionment—still resonate in today's schools. Their conversation explores what's changed (and what hasn't) in the decades since the film's release, the importance of strong school culture, and how educators can lead with purpose in the face of institutional challenges. It's a raw and honest discussion about the role of teachers, the need for systemic change, and the heart it takes to truly connect with students. Takeaways: Teachers (1984) offers a satirical yet sobering critique of the American public school system, many of which still resonate today. The character of Alex Jurel represents the struggle of passionate educators trying to make a difference within a broken system. The episode explores how authentic relationships and emotional intelligence are still the most powerful tools educators have. The discussion underscores the mental health toll on both students and teachers in rigid, outdated school environments. Despite the challenges, the film and the conversation both reinforce why committed, caring educators matter more than ever. About Steve Miletto: Steven Miletto, EdD has been an educator in Georgia(US) for 38 years. He has served public school families as a history teacher, assistant principal, high school principal, and RESA (Regional Education Service Agency) Executive Director in the Heart of Georgia RESA (8 years) and now with North Georgia RESA (3years). In 2009, he was the Georgia Principal of the Year and a finalist for NASSP/MetLife National Principal of the Year in 2010. In 2007 he received the Atlanta Braves/AT&T Educator of the Year Award. This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy, and Dana discuss the 1984 educational film, Teachers. Honestly, if you have any aspirations to be a teacher, watch this movie. You will change your profession in a minute. Nick Nolte is the "cool" teacher, getting kids abortions (this movie should have come out in 1982), Mauser from Police Academy is the "hot" gym teacher, causing the need for the abortions, and Richard Mulligan is some crazy person off the street, who just happens to be the best teacher in the bunch. Plus the Karate Kid, George McFly and Dr. Sattler are the students in this all star cast. Anyway, enjoy the podcast, and get ready for a very, VERY special episode this Friday

This week on Saturday Night Jive We watched Meatballs Part 2 because Bill Murray was in the first Meatballs. We've never seen the first Meatballs movie but that doesn't matter since this movie was never intended as a sequel to Meatballs. It was just a movie that resembled Meatballs a lot (we suppose as we've never seen it) that featured a character named Meathead that they renamed Meatballs 2 after the fact. Life's funny sometimes, but Meatballs 2 is not funny. There's an alien in this movie, but that's not fun at all. Richard Mulligan, Paul Reubens, and John Larroquette all waste their talent. It's a real big bummer of a film but special thanks to Elayne Boosler for all you do. In the late 1980's and early '90s, the TV sitcom landscape was dominated by an unstoppable force known as Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions. It's the creative juggernaut that brought us Soap and Benson in the late 70s, evolving into the force field behind The Golden Girls. A series so iconic, it launched the spin-offs, Nurses, The Golden Palace and Empty Nest, co-starring our guest, David Leisure. This Saturday night lineup featured casts of characters who occupied the same imagined universe and often popped into each other's shows. David was Empty Nest's wacky neighbor and he also appeared as Charley Dietz on The Golden Girls, Nurses and another Witt/Thomas/Harris creation, Blossom.Empty Nest, starred Richard Mulligan as Dr. Harry Weston, a widowed pediatrician, much sought after by all the Miami single ladies while riding the emotional waves of his grownup daughters who have refilled his Empty Nest.David gives us an exclusive peek behind the scenes of this memorable time in broadcast television history. Was Bea Arthur really the only Earth human who hated Betty White? What did Bea Arthur hate even more than Betty White? How did David's show attempt to fill the space left behind in their nest by Kristy McNichol? How did the cast and crew react to her emotional return?David shares his origin story and how he landed two key roles. 1) “First Krishna” in Airplane. (He was willing to shave his head.) And 2) The Joe Isuzu commercials. (He's an obsequious liar.)We also learn why St. Jude's hospital is so important to David, how he overcame childhood obesity and the truth about his secret, backstage divorce group therapy sessions with Loni Anderson and Richard Mulligan. All that plus IMDB Roulette and Empty Nest Trivia! And Fritz shares his own personal run-in with Golden Girls Producer Susan Harris. (She's probably still pissed.) This week on Saturday Night Jive we watched a film that parodies the disaster movie genre that was all the rage in the 1970s. No, not Airplane!, it's The Big Bus from 1976 starring Stockard Channing, Joey Baloney, Richard Mulligan, the guy who played Richard Mulligan's partner in A Fine Mess, Rene Auberjonis, Sally Kellerman, Ned Beatty, Harold Gould, Larry Hagman, Murph from The Blues Brothers, and one-time oldest SNL host Ruth Gordon. This movie came out 4 years before Airplane!, shares a lot of similarities with Airplane!, but is in no way connected to Airplane!. The world's first nuclear powered bus is taking its maiden voyage, several accidents happen, and only Joey Baloney can drive it home safely. It's an interesting movie that's pretty funny. You may have read about it in Bus World magazine. It's a cheat week on Saturday Night Jive. If you don't know our premise after almost 300 episodes, we usually watch movies featuring SNL alum but this week we dug into the barrel of film obscurity and pulled out A Fine Mess from 1986 starring one-time SNL host Ted Danson and Howie Mandel in a remake of a Laurel & Hardy short. This Blake Edwards directed piece of shit is certainly an oddity but we're torn on whether it's an obscure artifact you should know about or if it ever should have existed in the first place. Howie and Ted are two buddies who love fuckin'. They're on the run from mafia goons, they accidentally buy a vintage piano, they run around a lot, Howie opens a racist restaurant, and... what else happens in this movie? Oh yeah, there's a dildo made by Nazi Larry Storch that gets shoved up a horse's ass. Said dildo then gets shoved up Richard Mulligan's ass and results in him gaining super speed powers. It's a fine mess...of shit. Enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here

I could honesty talk about comedy with Paul Provenza forever. He's not just a student of it he's an architect of the craft itself, and the appreciation of it as well as having an eye for it in the comedians he surrounds himself with and the ones that are drawn to him. There's so much thought and nuance and love that goes into a project he's involved with which is why comics trust that they're in good hands when they're working with Paul. We talk about his early beginnings as a comic, why he doesn't perform live as much as he used to, the trajectory of his career, The Green Room with Paul Provenza, Sataristas, The Aristocrats, his upcoming documentary, how comedy has changed and where it's headed, Richard Mulligan, producing, directing, editing, and the current level of Dystopia we're all trying to thrive in. Enjoy!

The secret about the podcast's favourite son is now officially out as Mike Lowry played a starring role on his Six Nations debut for Ireland. That gives rugby reporters Jonathan Bradley and Richard Mulligan plenty to discuss with host Gareth Hanna, not to mention the scrum law that left Italy playing most of the game with 13 men and turned the tie into a glorified training exercise. There's also, of course, Ulster Rugby's upcoming game against Cardiff, a new signing and another win for Ireland U20s on the agenda.
Ireland's Six Nations Grand Slam hopes disappeared in the closing seconds in the Stade de France on Saturday evening. The contentious decision not to go to the corner with a 72nd minute penalty proved the chief talking point in the immediate aftermath, while a pass from Roman Ntamack took over that mantle when another video angle of France's opening try appeared on social media on Monday. Joining Gareth Hanna to discuss those, World Cup hopes and Ulster's game against the Dragons are Jonathan Bradley and Richard Mulligan.
The first Ulster Rugby Round Up podcast of 2022 has arrived, with news of John Cooney - and plenty of others - signing new contracts comforting us through the festive Covid call-offs. Joining Gareth Hanna to discuss those deals as well as look ahead to this weekend's slated game against Munster are rugby reporters Jonathan Bradley and Richard Mulligan. Also on the agenda are Sean Reffell's signing and Gareth Milasinovich's short-term switch to Saracens.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to actress and writer Dinah Manoff, who you know from her film roles in Grease, Child's Play and Ordinary People as well as on television in series' like Empty Nest, Soap and State of Grace. She's a Tony award winning stage actress who created the role of Libby in Neil Simon's I Ought To Be In Pictures on Broadway and went on to star in the film with Walter Matthau and Ann-Margret. It's only fitting that the daughter of Oscar and Emmy Award winning actress and director Lee Grant and writer Arnold Manoff would one day write her very first novel, The Real True Hollywood Story of Jackie Gold, which is out now. While not her story exactly, The Real Life Story of Jackie Gold is about celebrity, Hollywood, paparazzi, the business of celebrity and seeks to answer the question: did Jackie Gold jump or was she pushed? It's the story of a white hot actress who recounts her life in flashbacks from her hospital bed after a tragic accident which is both funny and ripped from today's headlines. We talk to Dinah about a wide range of other topics including the blacklist, Neil Simon, Marie Osmond, Peyton Place, growing up in the Malibu Colony, Richard Mulligan, Tony Curtis, her mother's Oscar winning documentary Down and Out in America, The Neighborhood Playhouse, Victor Buono, Cal Arts, soft core porn made at her home and so much more. It was a real thrill talking to the woman behind Marty Maraschino (like the cherry) who was funny, open and ready to talk. It's coming up next on the Rarified Heir Podcast.
This week the group in headed to summer camp for one of Fatty's favorite things, Meatballs Part II from 1984 which has nothing to do with the original, superior, titled film in the series. For some reason there is a man intent on cooking a horse, an alien, and more Counselors in Training than actual campers. Directed by Ken Wiederhorn and starring Richard Mulligan, Hamilton Camp, John "Not Scott Baio" Mengatti, Kim Richards and featuring Paul Reubens and John Larroquette. Also the fellas come up with few recasting ideas for an alternate cut.
One Champions Cup match down and from an originally daunting draw, all looks rosy in Ulster Rugby's European campaign. The win in Clermont is another landmark moment in the season for Dan McFarland's side, giving plenty for reporters Jonathan Bradley and Richard Mulligan to discuss with host Gareth Hanna. On the agenda are the performances of James Hume and John Cooney, Nick Timoney's controversial try, this week's visit of Northampton Saints and much more.
Two matches down and Ulster's 100 per cent record continues thanks to a bonus point win at Zebre. Joining Gareth Hanna to discuss just how 'disjointed' the performance really was are rugby reporters Jonathan Bradley and Richard Mulligan. Also on the agenda are the individual displays of the likes of James Hume, Nathan Doak and Will Addison, the upcoming match against Benetton and why Duane Vermeulen has been named in the Barbarians squad.
It's already episode two of the Ulster Rugby Round Up for the 21/22 season. After the friendly defeat to Saracens at Kingspan Stadium, we've got lots of your listener questions to ponder, with John Cooney's contract central to discussions as well as next crop of young players ready to make a significant step up. Joining Gareth Hanna to discuss that and lots more are rugby reporters Jonathan Bradley and Richard Mulligan.
Richard Mulligan stars as a husband who believes himself culpable for the murder of his wife. He is also convinced of his affair with another woman. But he simply can't persuade a police officer to believe either. Episode 12 aired January 17, 1974 on the CBS Radio Network. Richard Mulligan ( 13 of November of 1932 - 26 of September of 2000 ) was a film and television actor known for his role American Burt Campbell in Sitcom , Soap and later as Dr. Harry Weston in The Golden Girls and spin-off , Empty Nest . https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Mulligan
Ulster's Rugby's season is finally at an end. It's been a long time coming but we're finally ready to put a full-stop to a long campaign on our season review podcast. There's one final match - a late win over Edinburgh - to assess, including the requisite Rainbow Cup controversy - as well as the province's end of season awards. Once again, Jonathan Bradley's vote did not prove influential in the writers' accolade and this week he joins Richard Mulligan and host Gareth Hanna to try and find out why. There are a few key personnel to say a farewell to and positives to pick out of the gruelling campaign now gone. Oh, and yes, the the podcast was recorded before news broke of the collapse of Leona Nakarawa's transfer.

Ulster's season rumbles on relentlessly, with three more Rainbow Cup fixtures left to play. This week, there's a defeat to Munster to look back on and a daunting trip to Leinster to preview. Joining Jonathan Bradley to do that are Michael Sadlier and Richard Mulligan. As well as those fixtures, there's plenty of discussion about Iain Henderson's Lions selection, Ulster's young players, realistic aspirations for next season and the red card law trial.
Ulster's season is all but over after their Challenge Cup exit at the hands of Leicester Tigers left only the much-maligned Rainbow Cup to play for. There had been high hopes that, with Leinster for once not standing in their way, the route to silverware was clearing for the province but now there's another European wreckage to pick through for Jonathan Bradley and Richard Mulligan with Adam McKendry in the host's chair. There's the defeat itself to discuss as well as the wider implications for Ulster's ongoing progress (or lack thereof) and even a British and Irish Lions announcement to mull over.

The Rainbow Cup, or what remains of it, is now upon us. Ulster Rugby may not get the chance to take on South African opposition to end the season but, nonetheless the show goes on. Joining Gareth Hanna to look ahead to the tournament are Jonathan Bradley and Richard Mulligan. More than that, there's a shedload of listener questions to work through from injury updates to contract news and even the prospect of rugby going down a European Super League route.

They look ahead to the big match, including the selection dilemmas facing Dan McFarland. Also on the agenda is the Rainbow Cup, what it means to Ulster and latest talk on the future of Louis Ludik.
There's a big weekend of rugby coming up with both Ulster and Ireland in action. Both are in need of a healthy victory; Ulster to keep their increasingly slim chance of a PRO14 final spot alive and Ireland to stave off complete panic over their ailing Six Nations campaign. There's also Ulster's win over Glasgow to review, including a MOTM performance from Michael Lowry and a fitting captain's display from stand-in skipper Jordi Murphy. Joining Adam McKendry to discuss all that and more are rugby reporters Michael Sadlier and Richard Mulligan.

Today is a difficult day for thousands of people in this country. We have the publication of the report from the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes. One man who was born into that system is Richard Mulligan who joined Ray in studio to share his story.
Andrew and Mark continue their holiday joyride through the world of Christmas made-for-tv movies with 1990's "Guess Who's Coming for Christmas," which appears to have forgotten the Christmas part of its title. The discussion gets off-track quickly as the fellas discuss Richard Mulligan's secret relationship in the woods with an alien and how his life changes because of that. It's a close encounter of the jolly kind, so listen in, how about?

Last summer, we devoted a Flopcast episode to Meatballs, the Bill Murray summer camp classic. This summer, we're going to suffer through the horrifying Meatballs sequels. (It's a court-ordered punishment, presumably. Don't jaywalk in Chickentown, kids.) So for this episode, with Kornflake kicking and screaming in protest, we get started by watching and discussing Meatballs Part II. The year was 1984. Bill Murray was off busting ghosts, and wisely avoided this turkey, but the cast is still bursting with familiar faces. In addition to Soap's Richard Mulligan and Night Court's John Larroquette, we have the girl from Escape to Witch Mountain, the older brother from The Wonder Years, the robot from Buck Rogers, and Pee Wee Herman! With that lineup, you ask, how could they go wrong? Oh, they found a way. And yes, it involved a creepy E.T.-style alien who goes to summer camp. Yikes. So hang on, grab some pizza pie, and we'll get through this together. Meanwhile, we're already not looking forward to Meatballs III...
