EPISODE 37 - The Christian rock band Whiteheart was formed in 1982 by singer Steve Green, guitarist Dann Huff, bassist Gary Lunn, keyboardists Mark Gersmehl and Billy Smiley, and drummer David Huff, most of the members alumni of Bill Gaither's group. After debuting with a self-titled effort issued on the Home Sweet Home label, Green exited the line-up, and was replaced by vocalist Scott Douglas for 1984's Vital Signs; another roster swap exchanging Dann Huff for guitarist Gordon Kennedy again shook up the Whiteheart sound just prior to 1985's Hotline. The remaining Huff brother, David, split soon after its release, as did Douglas; new vocalist Rick Florian and drummer Chris McHugh were installed in time for 1986's Don't Wait for the Movie, the last Whiteheart record to feature Gary Lunn. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! In this episode I speak with Jean Watson about new album WONDER. About the Album: "The music on WONDER is the most authentically 'me' music I have ever recorded," Watson says. "I believe the music is quite accessible to both the faith-based and general markets, and the opportunity to partner with Naxos to get the music into the hands of music lovers is huge." "Naxos has great reach into the world music marketplace, so for the first time, my music has the possibility to be offered to audiences beyond the Christian market," she continues. "How amazing to think that people may listen to this music because they love the sound and be drawn closer to God in the process!" WONDER represents something of a defining moment for the classically-trained singer/songwriter and instrumentalist, who is a fan favorite in the UK. She is especially popular in Ireland, where she has long hosted a daily inspirational radio show which can be heard worldwide on UCB Radio Ireland. So, her affinity for Celtic sound comes as no surprise. Producer Billy Smiley, who has worked with Watson on her last two projects, suggested highlighting her Celtic-flavored songs and ethereal violin performances on the new CD and moving toward a more world music sound. In doing so, Watson discovered a glorious opportunity to simply be herself, both artistically and spiritually. Sporting a world music sound that falls lithely between the ethereal, yearning Celtic sound of Maire Brennan and the graceful, poetic lyricism of Enya, Watson deftly tightwalks a line that stretches between ancient themes of grace and mercy, and is anchored by contemporary declarations of worship and adoration. There are exuberant expressions of praise ("Blessed Be Your Name"), hymns of hope ("I Can Hear Your Voice"), psalms of yearning ("Restless"), songs of surrender to the perfect will of the Father ("It Is Well"), and testimonies to the mercy and grace of God ("Everything Can Change," "Amazing Grace"). Whether invested in ardent celebration or lost in pensive worship, there is a humble honesty that runs through each song, that binds them together and points both listener and singer toward the throne of God. WONDER has an otherworldly, ethereal, moving quality which penetrates the heart and transports the listener into an attitude of worship. In keeping with the world music direction of WONDER, Watson has enlisted the services of a number of musicians from around the globe, including South African John Ellis of Tree63 and former Newsboys drummer Peter Furler from Australia. Steve Hindalong from The Choir provides percussion, and as a special treat, Christian music legend Michael W. Smith appears as a guest accompanist as Watson performs Smith's hit, "I Can Hear Your Voice." "I am so grateful for this opportunity for my music to reach a wider audience," says Watson. "I can't wait to see what God will do with WONDER!" About Jean Watson: Internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter and classically trained violinist Jean Watson delved into the Christian recording world in 2003. During a time of great brokenness in Jean's life, her landlord accidentally heard her sing and donated money to make her first CD! She gave the CD away to anyone who would listen and soon was singing and speaking in churches, coffeehouses, homeless shelters, and prisons, sharing the story of how God was transforming her life. Since that time, Jean's voice and testimony of God's grace and healing have touched thousands of lives around the world. She has recorded seven albums to date including her latest CD, Steady My Gaze featuring Grammy nominated producer Billy Smiley, guitar virtuoso Phil Keaggy, and John Ellis of ‘Tree63'. Jean's musical style is eclectic and features an abundance of celtic-infused violin and Watson's signature haunting vocals. She has been honored four times as the Best Female Praise and Worship Artist USA by the UK Christian Music Alliance. Watson can be heard worldwide on UCB Radio Ireland where she hosts a daily inspirational radio show. Watson has appeared on The 700 Club, TBN's Praise The Lord, Cornerstone Television Network's flagship show, Real Life, LeSea TV's The Harvest Show, CTN's Bridges and many more media outlets across the globe. Though her ministry is now international, Jean is still passionate about bringing hope to the hopeless through words and music. Having performed in majestic cathedrals and grand concert halls, her favorite venues are still homeless shelters and prisons. When she is not traveling, Jean enjoys playing violin in the Kalamazoo Symphony, spending time with her family, and riding her horse, Rosie. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with David Britton about his latest holiday album titled Christmas. Here are some of the topics and questions we cover in the interview: Describe who you are and what you do in a single sentence? How has growing up in a missionary home and getting exposed to a range of diverse cultures influenced your music and creativity? Why was this the right time for you career-wise to do a Christmas album? Was there a particular vibe or feel that you were aiming for with this album? What were some of the influences that impacted where you went with this album? Are there any particular tracks on the album the stand out as a favorite or are meaningful for you? How do you hope your listeners are encouraged and challenged by what they hear on the Christmas album? Can you tell us anything about the new album you have in the work works for 2016? Tell us where we can order the Christmas album online and where we can connect with you on the web as well? About the Album: Christmas, which released digitally last year and released to brick & mortar retailers on October 9, 2015, showcases the unique ability of the classically trained Britton, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and with opera companies around the world, to effortlessly merge his diverse influences. He wraps his incredibly rich pop-classical sound (with a twist of anthemic rock) into and around these timeless holiday classics. The result is a poignant collection of cozy favorites and a blend of powerful yet intimate moments, custom made for the Christmas season. Britton encourages listeners to get cozy with his warm and inviting rendition of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting)," before closing the project with another original, "Sing Noel," written by Billy Smiley and CCM legend Scott Wesley Brown. On this lovely Christmas hymn, Britton shares the microphone with Christine Dente from Out of the Grey. "In a world that is full of so much turmoil and pain, it is my goal to use music to shed a glimmer of light; to bring comfort to those that grieve, peace to those at war, hope to those that fail, encouragement to those that feel alone, joy to those in despair," says Britton. "I am grateful for the opportunity to create music that does not fit within any specific genre, that allows me to leverage the unorthodox musical influences of my life, that people of all generations and tastes may find something that speaks to them. Above all else, it is my desire that those who listen may see past me to the One who created all things." About the Artist: World-class Baritone and Nashville recording artist, David Britton, brings a unique sound to his audiences, by blending his big voice with a signature orchestral rock instrumentation. This approach is the result of Britton's eclectic musical heritage, which included drumming in a rock band through high school and college, before beginning a career in opera. Over the past couple of years, Britton has emerged onto the scene with albums which take full advantage of both the classical training as well as the rock style creating music that is at times both intimate and grandiose. Welcome to the Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my guests are Jesse Fryson and Zach MacGorman from Above the Fall and we'll be discussing their debut EP Rise and Fall. About The Band: Above The Fall originated in the fall of 2011 when founding members, Jesse Fryson, and Zach MacGorman started writing music together. Over the course of the next few years, they had gone on to play shows in NJ, NY, PA, and DE, including a youth conference, with national recording artists, City Harbor, and headlining a benefit concert, which helped to raise upwards of $10,000 for a local pastor's wife and mother of two young kids, who suffered a rare and nearly fatal stroke. In May of 2014, Above The Fall had been invited to attend the Extreme Tour Objective Sessions in Nashville TN, where they met multi-Grammy and Dove nominated Producer, Billy Smiley. They were asked by Smiley to come to his studio to play some of their music for him, and to discuss the band's future goals. Five months, two trips, and six songs later, Above The Fall put the finishing touches on their debut E.P. The band has entered into a management agreement with Smiley and a team of industry professionals to help them move forward in their career. Now, with new music, new members, and a new live show, Above The Fall is set to make their official debut by Spring of 2015. From infusing rap into their songs to the guitar solos, from the drum battles to impromptu jam sessions, their unique live shows have set them apart from the rest. Some of their musical influences include Switchfoot, Foo Fighters, Tenth Avenue North, Jars Of Clay, and Shinedown. Above The Fall is ready to take their music to the next level. John Schlitt began singing when he was just five years old, performing the leads in recitals and plays in his school. By the time he was thirteen, he was in the unforgettably titled band Vinegar Hills Hometown Band Something Different – being paid twenty-five bucks as lead singer. It soon became clear that a career in music was in John's future. John Schlitt officially joined Petra in 1986, bringing with him his amazing vocal range and abilities that made him a legend with Head East. While John is arguably one of the most powerful vocalists around, his mightiest cry is the cry of his heart. Whether onstage or up close and personal, John's voice is one of a truly changed soul. And his music is and always will be a reflection of God's love and redeeming power.
