Today I'm speaking with Dr Susan Pierce-Thompson, who is not only a New York Times best selling author, she is also the creator of a program that has helped thousands and thousands of people to drop a significant amount of weight (I'm talking 20-100 lbs) and keep it off using 4 simple rules defined in her book “Bright Line Eating: The Science of Living Happy, Thin and Free”. This is actually a 2 part series because when we did our pre interview chat and discovered we had SO much in common, I knew we weren't going to be able to fit it all in one episode. Part one will be her story of how she became addicted to drugs and alcohol, how she overcame them and then her addiction transference to food and the origins of how she developed Bright Line Eating. Ep#117 Today's episode shines the light on a whole new way to understand compulsive overeating and that's through the lens of food addiction. Research suggests something more complex might be going on with some foods that we eat that affect the brain's reward system similarly to the way addictive drugs do. When addiction is the underlying cause of obesity, traditional treatment with diets that rely on personal responsibility, lifestyle changes or “willpower”can have minimal effects. Today's guest is a visionary and leader in the field of food addiction. She is Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D.Adjunct Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester, and an expert in the psychology of eating. She is a best selling author with 3 books, “Bright Line Eating: The Science of Living Happy, Thin, and Free”., "The Official Bright Line Eating Cookbook - Weight Loss Made Simple", and her newest book, "Rezoom: The Powerful Reframe to end the Crash-and-Burn Cycle of Food Addiction.”Susan is President of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss and CEO of Bright Line Eating Solutions (BLE), a company dedicated to helping people achieve long-term, sustainable weight loss by showing you how to rewire your brain and break the yo-yo diet cycle. BLE is geared towards those who are susceptible to addictive foods and have struggled to find peace and sanity around food. Grounded in psychology and neuroscience Susan's program uses cutting edge research to explain how modern processed foods impact the addiction centers of the brain. The complete opposite of the deprivation diet mindset, Bright Line Eating seeks to empower people for life, by creating a supportive community to heal the deeper emotional components that underlie addictive behaviors by integrating the tools of Positive Psychology and Internal Family Systems. But Bright Line Eating is more than just a way of eating—it's a movement. Their incredibly close-knit Online Support Community is the core of their program and provides the outreach and human connection essential to success. To date, 100,000 people from more than 100 countries around the world have participated in her online weight loss programs. Her first two books, including “Bright Line Eating: The Science of Living Happy, Thin, and Free,” becameNew York Times bestsellers and instant Hay House favorites. The Bright Line Eating mission is to help one million people around the globe discover lasting food freedom and have their “Bright Transformations” by 2025.Listen in as I ask Dr. Thompson a variety of questions, and explore this fascinating world of Bright Line Eating.
The stress of divorce can trigger a wide range of emotional responses, including eating disorders. Today, I'm joined by Dr. Susan Thompson, President of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss and the founder of the worldwide Bright Line Eating Movement, to discuss the psychology behind how and why we eat the way we do. Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D. is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester and an expert in the psychology of eating. She is President of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss and the founder of the worldwide Bright Line Eating movement. Her first two books, including “Bright Line Eating: The Science of Living Happy, Thin, and Free,” became New York Times bestsellers and instant Hay House favorites. Her work weaves the neuroscience of food addiction with powerful insights from Positive Psychology, IFS, and 12-Step Recovery to outline a roadmap for achieving true integrity and self-authorship around food. The Bright Line Eating mission is to help one million people around the globe discover lasting food freedom and have their “Bright Transformations” by 2025. We all have automated our eating habits to a large extent. To retrain our brains and change these habits, it takes about 3-4 months of discipline and intense structure. Bright Line Eating works because They take food addiction seriously. They know that the solution is automaticity; you're never going to win if it's about choice and willpower. Automaticity is brushing your teeth in the morning and night without thinking about it. Bright Line will teach you how to tap into that part of the brain so you treat eating the same way. Eating disorders can be developed as a way for a person to cope with stressful situations, and can cause a person to overeat or undereat. When it comes to the first, the idea that food can be an addiction is controversial. Bright Line addresses this idea by drawing a line around problem substances like flour and sugar. If you're struggling with an eating disorder during or after divorce, tap into the psychology behind how and why you eat the way you do. If it's time to build a new relationship with food, consider retraining your brain with a program like Bright Line, join a group, or talk to a Doctor / therapist.
If You Are Ready to Lose Weight and Overcome Food Addiction, You Should: Ditch the processed foods and sugars that we all know are not serving us Work towards the goal of ‘3 Meal Magic' by creating a routine and structure around your food Know that you are not alone and work with an expert to help find a sustainable plan for you Despite the fact that almost 50% of Americans try to lose weight every year, our country is in the midst of an obesity epidemic. The truth is, there is a scientific reason why we experience chemical dependency around certain foods. The good news is that with the right mindset and program to support you, you can shed that stubborn weight and get over your food addiction for good. The Psychology of Eating With Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D., is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester and an expert in the psychology of eating. After her own addiction struggles, Dr. Thompson dedicated herself and her research to the neuroscience of eating and the psychology of food addiction. She is President of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss and the founder of the worldwide Bright Line Eating movement. Her first two books, including “Bright Line Eating: The Science of Living Happy, Thin, and Free,” became New York Times bestsellers and instant Hay House favorites. Food Addiction is Addiction Food addiction runs on the same brain circuits that drug and alcohol addiction do. Even if you don't feel as though you have a food addiction, the processed foods that are so prevalent in our society are chemically altered to be addictive. In fact, ⅔ of the food that the kids and adolescents are eating today falls under ‘ultra processed'. These chemically addictive foods, combined with the breakdown of meal structures and our reliance on willpower, are setting our communities up for failure when it comes to losing that stubborn weight and taking back power over the snacks. Finding Your Way to Food Freedom Dr. Thompson's Bright Line Program is designed to help you rewire your brain around what you eat, what you don't eat, and how you structure your meals. By thinking of eating in the same way you brush your teeth, you can transition your body from food addiction to food freedom. Food is a major player in all of our healing journeys. If you are ready to let go of that weight that isn't serving you, break your cycle of food addiction, and find a sustainable way to keep that weight off, Dr. Thompson is the expert you need to hear from. Do you or someone you love struggle with addiction? Share how addiction, food, or otherwise has played a role in your healing journey with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “I need to get this message out to the world because nobody is helping people lose weight in a helpful way.” (7:35) “I think the buzz phrase of ‘obesogenic environment' is spot on. Food is just way more available, it is way more palatable, and the drive towards processed foods is a massive fact.' (13:49) “Willpower is a fickle friend, and it frequently will not show up for us, especially in the clutch moments.” (20:21) “This works. You have to want it. It's not a gimmick, it's not a ‘get skinny fast' pill, it's none of that. It's straight science, it is very effective, but you have to seriously be willing to give it a try.” (25:54) “You are not alone, and there is a reason that this has continued to happen in your brain, and Bright Line Eating can solve that and explain that for you. But mostly, I just want you to know you are not alone.” (33:58) In This Episode Learn about the neurochemistry of addiction, both food-related and generally (9:46) Why we have such a massive obesity epidemic in our country today (12:26) The problem with relying on willpower to address your food addiction (20:13) What you can do to break the cycle of food addiction through meal scheduling (24:55) How to rewire how your brain works around any addiction in your life, not just food (30:07) Resources Mentioned: Use Promo Code ‘podcast' for 10% Off Your Order at the Essentially Whole Store Food Freedom Quiz Bright Line Eating Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D., is a renowned professor, researcher, and now author on the subject of how to free ourselves from food addiction and, in her own words, "live happy, thin, and free." I've had the pleasure of reading some of her book, which will be out on March 21st, 2017, and, in this podcast, I speak with her about what makes Bright Line Eating the one method she knows that can work to stabilize binge eating. *My strong opinion is that everyone can benefit from learning about Susan's research and method, because disordered eating is not just common among a select few - the more I open up with folks about what I do with this website, the more I get the response - from all demographics - "hey, I have that!" (about binge eating). In this podcast, you will learn: How someone with an intensely addictive past used science to understand her food addiction. Why certain methods of managing binge eating, that work for some, may not work for others. How you can find out your level of susceptibility to food addiction, which will help you find just the right level of strictness for a food plan that would best support you. Susan's personal story of working towards a Ph.D. while actively binge eating, and how it affected her career then and now. Why certain events that seem like "flukes" or "failures" when they happen may actually be serving us beyond what we could plan ourselves. "Is addictability itself healable?"
