Chapter 1:Summary of Buffett"Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist" by Roger Lowenstein is a detailed biography of Warren Buffett, one of the most successful and respected investors of all time. The book delves deep into the life and investment philosophy of Buffett, tracing his rise from his early years in Omaha, Nebraska, to his position as the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.Lowenstein provides a comprehensive look at Buffett's unique approach to investing, which is characterized by buying undervalued companies with strong intrinsic values and holding them for a long time. The biography highlights Buffett's emphasis on patient investing, his resistance to following market trends, and his commitment to his principles even when they are unfashionable. The book also explores Buffett's personal life, including his modest lifestyle despite his immense wealth, his philanthropic endeavors, and his relationships with family and friends. Lowenstein offers insights into Buffett's thoughts on business, economics, and life, revealing a portrait of a complex and thoughtful individual.Overall, Roger Lowenstein's "Buffett" is not just a biography but an exploration of the discipline and rationality required to be a successful investor. Through Buffett's story, Lowenstein illuminates broader lessons on investing and managing money.Chapter 2:The Theme of Buffett"Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist" by Roger Lowenstein is a detailed biography of Warren Buffett, famed American investor and philanthropist. The book dives deeply into Buffett's life, from his early days as the son of a stockbroker in Omaha, Nebraska, through his ascension to become one of the wealthiest and most respected figures in the business world. Here are some of the key plot points, character development, and thematic elements inherent in the biography: Key Plot Points:1. Early Interest in Business: Buffett displayed an early fascination with numbers and an interest in making money, starting his first venture selling chewing gum and Coca-Cola at a young age.2. Education: Buffett attended the University of Nebraska and Columbia Business School, where he was mentored by Benjamin Graham, a legendary figure in the field of investment and known as the father of value investing.3. He chose to invest in companies with sound business practices, and his strategies are shown as being antithetical to short-term gains at the expense of long-term stability and ethics.2. Episode 6 – “Plumb Crazy at Plumb Point – Part 3” – The final episode of Season 1 of Aberdeen Proving Ground's Hidden History wraps up the discussion of the Plumb Point housing area, and reviews the development of the military landscape over time, and its evolution from working center of APG to officers housing and now location of the Living Legacy Forest, honoring Gold Star Soldiers and their families.
Episode 5 – “Plumb Crazy at Plumb Point – Part 2” – Special Guest Lucas Taylor, spouse of MG (Ret.) Randy Taylor, joins Sean Kief and Susan Thompson to discuss his two-year occupancy of Quarters One, the Commanding Officer's Quarters at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
The History of Plumb Point and Quarters One is emblematic of the effects the establishment of Aberdeen Proving Ground had on the landscapes, people, and industries of Harford County. Long held tracts and family names familiar in Harford County would give way to the urgent needs of a country bracing for entrance into World War I.

Preaching for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Margaret Susan Thompson offers a reflection on persisting in pursuit of God's promise for all: [This gospel] resonates especially with me because I'm a woman, but it has much to say to all of us who feel like we don't fit into a box, and who sometimes feel tormented by a demon, like the daughter in need of healing. In other words, it speaks to us all. And so it calls us all to be dogged, persistent—and, like the Canaanite woman, "of great faith." Margaret Susan (Peggy) Thompson is a professor of History and Political Science at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. She is also a Senior Research Associate at the Campbell Public Affairs Institute, and holds courtesy appointments in the Departments of Religion and Women & Gender Studies. Recently, Professor Thompson's work has focused on the history of American Catholic nuns. She has written and lectured extensively on the subject, and has an 18-lecture audio series available through Learn25.com. Her research is from an explicitly feminist perspective, emphasizing the agency and social significance of sisters to American religious and secular history. In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Susan Peirce Thompson Susan is a neuroscientist, New York Times bestselling author, and founder and CEO of bright line eating. Susan's start to life wasn't easy by any means. Her exposure to drugs started at 14 years old and led her to a life of drug abuse and prostitution. After a moment of enlightenment, Susan turned her life around and has found herself sober ever since. Unfortunately one addiction turned itself into another and she then suffered with a food addiction for around 7 years, she courageously put an end to this addiction too (which she states was even harder than the drug addiction) and has committed herself to helping others do the same. In this episode you can expect to learn: How Susan overcame her drug addiction from one day to another. Why food addiction is one of, if not the hardest addiction to face. Along with what steps we can take to move towards a healthier relationship with food and breaking away from food addiction. A Better Way to Find and Hire Great Team Members Episode #429 with Dr. Susan Thompson As a dentist, you wear many hats in your practice. But there's one you can let go of — hiring. There's a better way to hire than you being the one to do it, and Kirk Behrendt brings in Dr. Susan Thompson to share how. You don't need to do everything! And when you involve your team, they can help you hire great people. To learn the secret to finding and hiring the best team members for your practice, listen to Episode 429 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Weed people out very early in the process. Core values are critical for hiring great people. Let your team leaders do the hiring for you. Don't micromanage everything in your practice. Hire for personality — it can't be taught. Quotes: “It used to be that I did the hiring and took the lead on it, no matter the position and the department. I was really frustrated with that, and we had a — I can't take credit for the idea — sweet, retired dentist who helps out when we're out of town who was filling in one day, and I stopped by the office to do some paperwork and mentioned it to him. And he said, ‘Oh, I never did that at the end.' I was like, ‘Well, then who hired people?' He was like, ‘Oh, I let [my team] hire. They have to work with them. Let them hire them.' And I was like, ‘That's genius!'” (4:14—4:45) “My whole front desk has been hired by Erin, who's the director of that department. And they all think that she's the boss. And so, they go to her with everything. If they are sick, they call her. They don't call me. And they really see her as authority in a way, I think, that they wouldn't have if I hired them and said, ‘Oh, but Erin's in charge.' So, I think that's been really good. And the same thing in the operative department. Gena, my assistant, has hired a couple of assistants now, and same sort of attitude. They truly see her as a leader, I think, much more than they would have if Ben and I had interviewed them and hired them, and then said, ‘Oh, by the way, do what she says.'” (6:06—6:49) “One thing we've seen — I'm sure every practice has over the years — we have had some people that were incredible at their job. Particularly, one time we had an assistant that was phenomenal — just so good. Ben and I didn't know, but she was toxic for the team. And that's an interaction that doesn't include us. And so, for them to be able to meet these people and see if they're going to be good at their job, but also how do they fit into the team, and to the dynamics of things beyond the doctor-employee relationship, has been really valuable.” (7:08—7:40) “We've definitely had some COVID-19 failures. One, we hired that didn't show up. One that we hired and came — this is my favorite story — worked for a day, said she didn't think it was for her, and then disappeared before we could pay her. And it took me like six months to pay her for her day of work. So, no, it's not perfect. But the people that come out of it have been really good. And I don't feel like in the ones that didn't work out that I could've done any better or foreseen something that they did. It's definitely not perfect, but it's so much better than before. I don't feel like it's my fault, or I let them down if something doesn't work out. And I think it helps them learn for the next go around, like, ‘Look at this. Look at that. Ask this question,' and helps them get even better at it.” (10:18—11:11) “One little trick that I think Chris gave us years ago was, when we put an ad on Indeed, we'll typically have something in there like, ‘Give us the five reasons why you're going to be an amazing team member.' And just weeding out the people who will take the time to answer that question gets rid of most people, and that narrows the field for the people who are actually interested in your job and aren't just click, click, click, click.” (16:17—16:40) “Personality [is one of the top things to look for in

The stress of divorce can trigger a wide range of emotional responses, including eating disorders. Today, I'm joined by Dr. Susan Thompson, President of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss and the founder of the worldwide Bright Line Eating Movement, to discuss the psychology behind how and why we eat the way we do. Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D. is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester and an expert in the psychology of eating. She is President of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss and the founder of the worldwide Bright Line Eating movement. Her first two books, including “Bright Line Eating: The Science of Living Happy, Thin, and Free,” became New York Times bestsellers and instant Hay House favorites. Her work weaves the neuroscience of food addiction with powerful insights from Positive Psychology, IFS, and 12-Step Recovery to outline a roadmap for achieving true integrity and self-authorship around food. The Bright Line Eating mission is to help one million people around the globe discover lasting food freedom and have their “Bright Transformations” by 2025. We all have automated our eating habits to a large extent. To retrain our brains and change these habits, it takes about 3-4 months of discipline and intense structure. Bright Line Eating works because They take food addiction seriously. They know that the solution is automaticity; you're never going to win if it's about choice and willpower. Automaticity is brushing your teeth in the morning and night without thinking about it. Bright Line will teach you how to tap into that part of the brain so you treat eating the same way. Eating disorders can be developed as a way for a person to cope with stressful situations, and can cause a person to overeat or undereat. When it comes to the first, the idea that food can be an addiction is controversial. Bright Line addresses this idea by drawing a line around problem substances like flour and sugar. If you're struggling with an eating disorder during or after divorce, tap into the psychology behind how and why you eat the way you do. If it's time to build a new relationship with food, consider retraining your brain with a program like Bright Line, join a group, or talk to a Doctor / therapist.

Pearls of Wisdom from the episode: -Self care is essential and we, as leaders, should lead by example by practicing it. -Wellness should be “THE Goal” NOT “A goal” in healthcare. -Organizations need to define what a healthy workforce looks like and make it a priority. -Let go of the drive for perfection! The goal should be to become the best version of ourselves. Just enough is good enough. -Understand the power of saying no. We discuss her Film Ghost Empire Belize. Part of a trilogy of films exploring the legacy of British colonial rule and the criminalisation of LGBTQ+ people in 34 countries around the world, Irish-based artist-filmmaker Susan Thomson examines the constitutional challenge taken by Belizean activist Caleb Orozco against Section 53, a 19th century British colonial law criminalising acts ‘against the order of nature'. Opposition to the case by evangelical Christian groups has included symbolic hangings of an effigy of LGBTQ+ group UNIBAM. The film is a psychological portrait of Orozco's resistance and sacrifice and the validation of his efforts at the UK Parliament, and at the UN where he is congratulated by then vice president Joe Biden. Georgian musician and ethnomusicologist Nana Mzhavanadze was born into a musical family. She says her future was predicted by her grandmother:- “when I was bought from the maternity house, my grandmother met me at the door, that was the first thing that she did, she put me on the piano and she said she is going to be a musician.” This episode is a significant event for their family, as it brought Nana, her uncle Rebuli and his daughter Marekhi together to sing for the first time in over 10 years. How did french singer, instrumentalist and teacher Zoé become so entwined with Georgian songs? "So for the first couple of years, I think, I was listening only exclusively to old Georgian folk songs. And you know, even though you are not born in the country, I think, if you listen to it constantly, then you, in the end, kind of get the feeling that there is something that sounds natural or not natural" As leader and founder of ensemble Kimilia, ( https://kimilia.bandcamp.com/ )Zoé Perret talks about finding a 'common soul' between Georgian polyphony and medieval French music. Sometimes our call into education is as simple as a voice that says, “Be a teacher.” That was the case with Susan Thompson, academic dean at University High School in Tolleson, Arizona. Though she’s retiring at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, she’s still in the trenches and working with kids daily. The way she works so hard to buck the status quo of the traditional education model is inspiring! In this episode, Susan offers an overview of how University High went from a school to get students who were falling behind ready for college to a highly sought after, rigorous option for diverse and motivated students. In fact, the school regularly ranks on the US News and World Report’s list of top high schools nationally while primarily enrolling students from the immediate community (rather than cherry-picking only high achievers). After the interview, I provide a synthesis of Susan’s magic wand wish, and how it can help refill the cups of our teachers and students alike. I also offer a little challenge at the end that I’d love to discuss with each and every one of you…How can we each start with fascination? About Susan Thompson Susan Thompson has had a 30-year career in education, teaching theater, AP History, gifted programs, and serving as a librarian and now a principal/academic dean. She has worked for the AZ Commission of the Arts instructing arts-based learning workshops all over the state of AZ. She has also taught at a variety of universities. She coached cross country and was the AZ State Thespian Director for 10 years. She resides in a small historic home in downtown Phoenix, where she serves her community as president of the Midtown Neighborhood Association and lives with her 1-year-old chiweenie, Frida. In this episode, I talk with Richmond, Virginia based painter Agnes Grochulska. We discuss her relocation from Poland-where she was born-to the United States, taking a long hiatus from art-making to raise a family, the life of Alice Neel and being a female artist and much more. From her website: Agnes Grochulska is a contemporary realist painter working mainly in oils. She also enjoys creating drawings in graphite and charcoal. Agnes studied design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland. She currently resides in Richmond, Virginia, and her art can be viewed at the local Eric Schindler Gallery. Since becoming a full -time artist in 2016 her work has been shown among others, at galleries in New York City, Denver, Miami, local galleries in Virginia and abroad. A solo exhibition of her work took place at Eric Schindler Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, May 2019. Recent exhibitions include NOMAD St. Moritz, Switzerland with John Wolf, and “New Waves 2020” at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art curated by Susan Thompson, an Associate Curator at the Guggenheim Museum. Agnes’ work has won several awards and has been published in the Artist’s Magazine, Drawing Magazine, Artists on Art Magazine, and others. Her drawings and paintings have been shown and privately collected throughout the US and Europe, most notably the Del Cerro Family Collection and the DaLuz Collection. New work can be also found at her regularly updated website, Instagram, and Facebook accounts. Agnes is interested in a broad spectrum of themes and subjects in her art. She is drawn to the human subject with all the emotion, meaning, and importance that only the human form can carry. Another idea she likes to explore is the landscape around her, trying to capture the essence of the place. We’re starting off the New Year by taking one last look back at the old year, thanks to the “2019 Philanthropy Awards” published by Inside Philanthropy, a left-of-center news and commentary source on institutional funders. While listeners will likely be familiar with Inside Philanthropy’s “Philanthropist of the Year”—billionaire investor and founder of the Open Society Foundations George Soros—the website highlighted three other figures and institutions that bear watching in the left-of-center philanthropic world beyond the “man who broke the Bank of England”…and who in so doing may have inadvertently made possible Brexit by forcing the United Kingdom out of the predecessor financial arrangements to the European Union’s single currency. We note Inside Philanthropy’s runner-up to Soros, JPB Foundation funder Barbara Picower; Inside Philanthropy’s “foundation president of the year,” Allen Greenberg of the Warren Buffett-funded Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation; and Inside Philanthropy’s “Least Transparent Mega-Giver,” Laurene Powell-Jobs, Apple executive Steve’s widow. The focus this week is on public transport. Graeme Innes speaks with Sally Aurisch, BCA's NSW/ACT Coordinator, and BCA member, and New Horizons regular, Susan Thompson about new developments in transport in NSW and the ACT. The Sydney branch of BCA recently held a transport forum where members heard from Sally and Susan, as well as Sophie Hogan, from Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. Unfortunately we can't bring you Graeme's chat with Sophie this week, but look forward to that in future editions. thanks to Graeme for putting together this programme.
In this week's programme, we announce the upcoming Legacy Project Podcasts. This five episode series will be published on this podcast feed over the coming days. Hear from Graeme Innes, Susan Thompson and Jennifer parrie, recorded at the BCA National Convention. Discover the motivation for the series and what it means to some of the participants.
We speak with Maribel Steel author of Blindness for Beginners – a renewed vision of possible. Part memoir and part self-help, the book demystifies the reality of living with blindness while providing practical suggestions to those facing vision loss. Also on the program, Blind Citizen Australia recently held its biennial convention and members Susan Thompson and Stephen Jolley discuss the key events of the weekend and important role the event plays for community.
Susan Thompson is transitioning from the spotlight to behind-the-scenes. We talk about her experience going from auto mechanic shop to the standup stage to the management/producer side of things.
