Today I'm talking to Cindy Spratt, who's a holistic & functional nutritionist that specialises in eating disorder recovery. Cindy speaks about an all-encompassing approach that teaches fundamentals of nutrition, listening to the body, learning how to respect and love the body, and rebuilding a loving and joyful relationship with food, so that people can thrive long term and feel good about food and in their body. Cindy has been on her own healing journey. As a young girl she loved being in the kitchen and creating and connecting through food. Her first job was at a local tea house, aged 11, and with a local catering company soon after. Throughout her teenage years, however, Cindy's relationship with food morphed into something different. She spent almost a decade as a competitive gymnast, where weight and body image were of heightened focus. When the time came to step away from gymnastics, the drastic drop in exercise, along with puberty and the complex mental/emotional challenges of adolescence, her once loving, and rather normal relationship with food, was replaced by something deeply dysfunctional. From Cindy's teens well into her twenties, her food journey became her biggest struggle. She found herself in the throes of bingeing and purging, starving, dieting, over-exercising, and popping pills. She describes the shame and guilt that engulfed her during those years as devastating, and the loneliness, unbearable. In her mid-twenties, Cindy came to the realisation that her health was suffering, that there was more to her than an eating disorder, and more to this life than struggle. Determined to find a way to bring back her love of food and turn her life's journey into something positive, she aligned herself to a new path and began to look to the health world for guidance. And then…Cindy's life was turned upside down At 32, as a young wife and mother, and well on her way to being fully recovered from the eating disorder, doctors found a cancerous tumor in her colon. She endured a life altering colon resection and was advised to endure several rounds of chemo. Opting out of chemo, Cindy set out to up her health game. She went back to school, turned to exercise for therapy, and opened up her spirit to life's teachings. What she found was a calling: to help others find their own positive food journey and to be the help she didn't have when she was younger. Since then, Cindy has spent years in school becoming a nutritional enthusiast, a kitchen muse, and a food and body advocate, receiving certifications in Holistic Nutrition, Functional Nutrition, Culinary Nutrition, Eating Psychology, and Eating Disorder Recovery Coaching. Her kitchen is now a joyful and creative space, once again. She has learned how to listen to her body, reuniting it with athleticism, dance, and the wondrous outdoors. Cindy's life story with food has taught her endless lessons: to embrace every moment with gratitude and compassion, to listen to life's teachings, and that believing in oneself is half the battle. She hopes to pass this along to others. In the episode today, Cindy explores her healing journey with food, and the ups and downs along this tumultuous path. She talks about getting started in recovery with nutrition and also shares some of her best tips for addressing psychology and a bigger picture of recovery. It's an inspiring episode and I hope that you enjoy it. We all have a food story of our own. Be that something our parents have dawned on us or something we have created for ourselves, our food story plays a huge role in how we see ourselves, especially in relation to weight. But how do we write the best possible story that can be written if we still see weight loss as taboo? How do we go after our goals towards a healthier mind, body, and soul if we don't really listen to ourselves, or worse, don't even know our truth?Elise Museles is a Certified Eating Psychology and Nutrition Expert, creator of the Food Story platform, and the wildly popular blog Kale & Chocolate. As an author, speaker, health coach, and podcast host, Elise's mission are to empower women to create a healthier relationship with food and their bodies by changing what's on their plate and what's in their minds. In this episode, Elise engages in a conversation with Dr. Adrienne with regards to food, weight loss, and the culture around these two, as they discuss mindset's role in line with our own food story. What will you learn from this episode:Dig deep and reset the Food Story themes you might have buried long ago Learn how to turn down the food noise Epic storytelling, food for mood, and hot topics to inspire you to shift your habits + mindset around food “The way that we talk to ourselves and the way that we frame things will completely change the experience. Those mindset shifts make all the difference.”– Elise MuselesKey Takeaways: “The psychology part is really of the most interest to me, because I think, oftentimes, that's the missing piece of the nutrition puzzle.” – Elise Museles “It's so much less about the food than it is about being together.” – Elise Museles “With cooking, if you have that chore mentality, it's a chore. In the second episode of Whole, Full, & Alive, Caitie delves into the topic of "fullness" and the two foundations cultivating it. This episode will help you process your relationship with fullness and adopt actionable nutrition tools that help you live your most authentic life. My guest this week is Autumn Smith In this episode, Autumn and I discuss the hot topic of meat consumption… It's time to upgrade your thinking around meat and the quality you consume. The issues around agriculture, animal farming, soil health, and more are some of the most pressing of our time. We all need to understand what's actually happening in this realm versus what mainstream media is touting as it's having a major impact on our children now and definitely will impact their future. And that's why I brought back my guest Autumn Smith to update us and help us understand what's happening in the world currently around meat and how we can ensure the best options for our families while supporting the environment through regenerative practices. Let's talk about practices (and companies) that truly care about the planet AND the health of our population. Autumn Smith is the co-founder of Paleovalley and Wild Pastures, holds a Master's in Holistic Nutrition, is a certified Eating Psychology coach and a certified FDN practitioner. Her passion for health began with her own struggles with IBS and anxiety. Despite a career as a professional dancer and celebrity fitness trainer, Autumn's own health was in shambles. In this episode, Holly and I are delving into the psychology of running and nutrition. We have a special guest with us for much of the episode, Josephine Perry, a sports psychologist who has genuinely blown our tiny minds. Josie got into sports psychology after doing an Ironman, while facing a scary ocean for the swim section. The tannoy shouted out to the assembled athletes: “You guys can't change those waves, but you can change the way you feel about them” and it switched her brain into gear, gave her a triathlon PB, and motivated a change in career. And it's lucky for us that she has. We have so many questions for Josie, and she talks to us here about how the brain is connected to our bodies, and she explains the part of the brain, the Amygdala, which is the bit that notifies us about threats. We talk about how this can affect us on the start line of races (a lot, it turns out). And we also talk about sports and exercise addiction, and the unhealthy attachment of sport and food. Holly and I both found this chat extremely revealing, and a little bit emotional if I'm honest. What Josie reveals about the dynamic between exercise, food, and historical unhelpful behaviours and thinking feels like a light switching on. What we need to be doing, it turns out, is discovering what our values are, and making sure we run for those things, rather than as a negative punishment. Sounds obvious – often isn't. This feels like a really illuminating and important podcast – I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Please take care here, there are some potentially triggering mentions of eating disorders and sporting addiction.LinksDo please email us at wrpodcast@anthem.co.uk!Josie's book The Ten Pillars of SuccessYou can get your hands on your first issue of Women's Running for just £1! In this special edition of the Psychology of Eating Podcast, Marc David interviews Eating Psychology and Nutrition expert Elise Museles, author of Food Story: Rewrite the Way You Eat, Think, and Live, and podcast host of Once Upon a Food Story. Elise holds four certificates in holistic health and integrative healing, and is a graduate of Marc's Mind Body Eating Coach Certification Training at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, a five-time National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant recipient, and a frequent expert cited in such publications as O: The Oprah Magazine, Forbes, Health, Self, ELLE, Well&Good, mindbodygreen, Yoga Journal, and more. In their interview, Elise shares with us her fascination with all things food story, and why our food story is so important to transforming our eating challenges such as emotional eating, binge eating, chronic dieting, weight, body image, and more. As Elise explains, our food story is our unique set of thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and past experiences with food and body. So many of us focus on nutrition and lifestyle protocols, but spend little time considering how our mindset affects our eating patterns. In this powerful interview, Elise breaks down why understanding and transforming our food story is key to changing our unwanted food and body challenges. If you're intrigued about your own personal food story, and how to cut out the “food noise” (all the external chatter about what and what not to eat, weight, and more), tune in to learn more! It is easy to get caught up in between the billion-dollar beauty industry that makes us feel more inadequate with every ad, tv-show and magazine that gets published — and the billion-dollar food industry that's waiting to mop up those insecurities with aisles of manufactured comfort food.Particularly having gone through multiple lockdowns with its many challenges you can feel weighed down mentally and emotionally by the constant pressure and expectations and can find ourselves turning to food for comfort.Kerryn Powell, The Network Catalyst talks with Joni Seeto, Binge Eating Therapist.Joni is a therapist who specialises in helping women overcome binge eating and end their lifelong struggle with food and weight. Her unique Weightless™ method helps women make peace with food, reclaim their worth and feel confident in their own skin again. With qualifications in Rapid Transformational Therapy, Eating Psychology and 10+ years of corporate leadership and development experience, Joni combines hypnotherapy, coaching and high performance customer success methods to help women break free from self-sabotage and achieve long-lasting results. She lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband Warren and their fluffy round-faced cat, Gaston.contact Joni Seeto: https://www.joniseeto.com/contact Kerryn Powell: https://www.kerryn-powell.com.auFollow on facebook: https://facebook.com/kerrynpowellytm
Episode SummaryIn this episode, Marc talks about the psychology of eating, the reasons so many people struggle with weight loss, and how stress affects our relationship with food. He discusses some common traps that people fall into along with some strategies to manage those traps so that you can reduce stress and become a better version of yourself both mentally and physically.HighlightsAt 5 years old Marc asked his mother to change his diet because he didn't feel well.He began to feel better and that started his relationship with nutritious food.Marc realized that he could tell people what to do but without understanding how they thought, he couldn't help them understand how to do it.He then started looking for research on eating psychology and couldn't find anything. He then started doing the research himself.People often look to nutrition to lose weight. But nutrition can't help with many of the reasons that people make the wrong choices.People think of themselves as a single person or mindset when the reality is that we have multiple archetypes. Recognizing who you are when you are choosing what you eat is critical.Be sure that the “adult” mind is making mealtime decisions. Don't let some version of the inner child manage food choices.Every eating challenge that you face has a brilliant reason that is rooted inside our psychology, biology, or both.Food has been associated with comfort since we were infants. We have all been trained to think, feel bad, get food, feel better.Try to use the triggering moment to better understand what you really need. If you do make a choice that you regret, you need to give yourself some grace and not be critical or attack yourself.Learning to not self-abandon is a powerful lesson. Many people think that they need to train their bodies not to eat or to eat less. Most people need to train themselves to learn how to eat in a way that works.Long and slow deep breathing is the easiest stress reduction tool. Five to ten long and slow breaths before eating will help regulate stress and create a relaxation response.Eating too fast causes a stress response which releases cortisol. Cortisol makes it more difficult for the body to feel satiated since it blocks pleasure.Early childhood diets are making it more difficult to manage and lose weight. The body has the best chance to become what it's meant to be when you become the person that you think you will be when you lose the weight. Most people get this backward.Meet MarcMarc David, M.A., is the Founder and Primary Teacher of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, an internationally renowned organization reaching millions of people each year. As a survivor or sexual, verbal, psychological and emotional abuse, Erica has explored the deeper layers of trauma through the lens of Eating Psychology, 12-Step Recovery and Anti-Racism, all in an effort to discover what “hurt people hurt people” truly means on a cultural, historical and interpersonal level. An extroverted introvert, Erica can usually be found taking a mid-day long drive along the California Coast, armed with a great playlist and an even greater desire for truth, connection, sushi and plenty of alone time. Follow Erica on IG @whats_eating_erica_j and listen to her podcast What's Eating Erica Jacobs and on Spotify too! In this podcast we mention Skill in Action by Michelle Cassandra Johnson. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hold-the-granola/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hold-the-granola/support
