Tackling sugar addiction is more than a battle of willpower; it's a journey of understanding the neuroscience behind our cravings and learning how to heal our brain for lasting change. Dr. Susan Pierce-Thompson's podcast episode is a deep dive into this process. She shares her personal story of overcoming drug addiction and obesity, highlighting her transition from a life ensnared by addictive behaviors to one where she could exercise control over her eating habits through the Bright Line Eating program. The episode addresses the human brain's intricate landscape, which is highly responsive to rewards and susceptible to addiction. Our brains are wired to remember and seek out the cues that predict these rewards, a mechanism that can lead to an increased susceptibility to addiction in environments where food cues are omnipresent. This conversation between the host and Dr. Thompson offers an in-depth exploration of how we can transition from a dopamine-driven existence to one where serenity is achieved through balanced brain chemistry, a state influenced by a mix of neurotransmitters including serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins.Embarking on a journey toward better health often means rewriting one's identity, and the Bright Line Eating program is designed to facilitate this transformation. The conversation emphasizes the difference between a temporary diet and a lifestyle change, where new eating habits become an integral part of one's identity. The four Bright Lines—no sugar, no flour, eating only at meals, and measuring quantities—provide clarity and a structured path for those seeking sustainable weight loss, challenging the promises of quick fixes offered by diet medications.Dr. Thompson also shares her insights on the concept of 'crystal vase recovery,' likening the fragility and strength of recovery to a rare and valuable object that must be cared for diligently. This analogy reinforces the ongoing vigilance required to maintain recovery from addiction. The episode further delves into the healing potential of internal family systems and parts work in psychology, illustrating how engaging with different aspects of our psyche can lead to healthier coping strategies and a more harmonious internal family system. As the episode concludes, there's an expression of gratitude for individuals like Dr. Thompson who have dedicated their lives to improving health and nutrition, inspiring listeners to strive for a balanced existence. The heartfelt appreciation for the work done in distinguishing between effective and ineffective dietary practices is palpable, as is the collective effort to address food-related issues and guide others toward happiness and balance. This episode not only shares the remarkable journey of Dr. Thompson but also serves as an educational resource on the science of addiction and recovery. It's a beacon of hope for those seeking freedom from the clutches of sugar addiction and offers practical, scientifically-backed advice for achieving a healthy relationship with food. For anyone struggling with food addiction or simply seeking to improve their relationship with eating, this podcast episode with Dr. Susan Pierce-Thompson is a must-listen. Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson is in the house!!Susan is my dear friend, and she brings her inspiring story AND some explanation around her philosophy around food with Bright Line Eating. [Admittedly, her program could not be more different than mine if she tried, and for good reason.]Bright Line Eating is just what it sounds like—a big, fat, glaring, BRIGHT LINE in the sand when it comes to setting boundaries and structuring your eating habits. But why?Susan's expertise comes from her own experience with addiction. What first was an alcohol and substance addiction she overcame at age 20, transformed into a food addiction as she made her way through college and her PhD. [Don't settle for this sparknotes version. Open the episode right now and listen to her incredible story. Yes. Right now.]Where my health goals thrive with moderation and the idea of filling half your plate with veggies, Susan's is hard nos around processed foods like sugar and weighing all your portions for every meal. She digs into why this structure is so important. For people with food addiction, structure and boundaries = freedom. It's the only way. Susan also has some great anecdotes for the excuses already spilling out of your mouth, like “I don't think I could ever have birthday cake again.” Get ready for this wisdom… The you NOW can't imagine that, but the future you doesn't even think about birthday cake. And there's more where that came from; Susan is bursting with some really empowering statements and insane knowledge… we even touch on the wonder drugs Ozempic and Wegovy. Before you sneak off… if this episode resonated with you, go check out Bright Line Eating online and take their susceptibility quiz to know where you stand with food addiction. I'm so excited to share my latest podcast episode with all of you! I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson, a neuroscientist and founder of the Bright Line Eating program.  In this incredibly insightful conversation, Susan peeled back the layers on the science behind food addiction and offered a blueprint for finding freedom. She shared her own story of battling disordered eating for years before finally discovering the key to sustainable weight loss.  I was blown away as Susan explained how modern processed foods can truly hijack the brain's reward system, flooding it with dopamine and triggering the same addictive pathways as drugs. This helps explain why so many of us feel trapped in cycles of overeating certain foods and yet unable to stop. The good news is Susan has developed a science-based program called Bright Line Eating that gives clear guidance on what to eat and, just as importantly, how to rewire your brain to overcome food obsession. She's helped hundreds of thousands of people break free from food addiction and transform their health. I learned so much from hearing Susan's story and expertise. This conversation is an absolute must-listen if you feel controlled by food rather than being in control of it. Tune in to understand yourself on a deeper level and start your own journey towards food freedom! Please share this episode with anyone you know who might benefit from learning about overcoming chronic dieting and disordered eating habits. He grew up in a family and culture of fried foods and high-calorie foods.  Tony got sober from drugs and alcohol using a 12-step recovery program, then began using food even more than he had. He entered the Bright Line Eating Program (https://www.brightlineeating.com/) and has released all of the extra pounds achieving a healthy body weight through eliminating sugar and flour, limiting the times he eats during the day, and weighing his food. The Bright Line Eating Program helped Tony focus on the inner emotional work required around the reasons he was using food. The work Susan Peirce Thompson, PhD (https://www.susanpeircethompson.com/), the founder of Bright Line Eating has done as a neuroscientist resonated with Tony given her focus on the chemical reaction in the brain when we ingest sugar and flour. He realized it was not his lack of willpower which caused his food addiction, but rather his body's response to addictive substances which set up cravings and obsessive behaviors around food. He talks about how automaticity began to play a part in his daily routine in which he has developed new habits that feel normal.  Today Tony W. lives a happy, thin and free life through having recovered from food addiction as he continues to follow his program each day. What an inspiring and hopeful story of recovery from food addiction!

More on this week's guest: Dr. SUSAN PEIRCE THOMPSON, PH.D., is the New York Times bestselling author of Bright Line Eating, The Official Bright Line Eating Cookbook, and Rezoom. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester and an expert in the psychology of eating. She is president of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss and the founder of Bright Line Eating, a worldwide movement on a mission to help one million people have their Bright Transformations—the full physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional transformation that accompanies healthy, sustainable weight loss—by 2030.  https://brightlineeating.com/  https://www.facebook.com/BrightLineEating  https://www.instagram.com//brightlineeating/  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKNuQvVX_3SzNALJlvieH-Q  More deets on the episode:  We begin with Dr. Thompson's definition of codependency: when someone is doing for another what they could do for themselves. This may be for love, approval, to feel safe in themselves, or trying to prevent being hurt. She discusses the caregiver part related to IFS (Internal Family Systems) and how we often are wounded and trying to prevent further wounding.  Dr. Thompson opens up about codependency in her own life and how her mother was codependent on her while she was an addict.  We shift focus to Dr. Thompson's specialty of our relationship to our weight. According to Dr. Thompson, our weight and codependency connect through 1) the addiction pathway; or 2) the consolation pathway. With addiction, codependents may be vulnerable to this pathway since we may rely on substances to cope with life, however, we unconsciously select substances, like food, that help us maintain all of our responsibilities. With the consolation pathway, codependents may reward themselves or view food as a “prize” for all their hard work or when things don't go their way.  Dr. Thompson details how codependency may directly impact our weight loss or weight gain. If we use food to help us “keep it together,” then we are likely to gain weight as a consequence. In contrast, if we are so over-focused on others and fulfilling their needs, we may neglect ourselves and lose weight due to self-neglect. She shares about her program, Bright Line Eating, and how she helps people get in touch with the underlying reasons that contribute to their problems with weight. She discusses the connection between weight and food addiction and how addicts and codependents are vulnerable to cross-addictions if they do not address the core issues contributing to their addiction.  Dr. Thompson encourages us all to take her quiz at www.foodfreedomquiz.com to discover how susceptible we are to to food addiction. In order to create a healthier relationship with our weight and food, she suggests needing a more structured approach to eating, boundaries around meal time, establishing food rituals, incorporating meditation, inspirational readings, and journaling (ever heard of the 5-year journal?).   Thanks for coming on Dr. Thompson!! Susan Peirce Thompson, PhD, is the founder of Bright Line Eating (BLE). In her teens, she started using drugs, just for fun and experimentation at first. But she got really hooked and her drug abuse got worse and worse.By the time she picked up speed (or crystal meth), she was 16 and was very concerned about her weight already. Except that when she used speed, she didn't feel she had to eat on it. And she lost a lot of weight. Susan finally got clean and sober when she was 20. Her drug addiction had lasted six years. But within nine months she'd gained 40 pounds. Susan started teaching in a community college, obtained her PhD, and got to develop courses in the psychology of eating and positive psychology. These laid the framework for what she ended up developing in Bright Line Eating.Eventually, Susan traded her 12-step meetings for food meetings. She finally found the right configuration of what to do with her food. She lost her excess weight... and kept it off.Susan has been slender now for 19 years. She learned the miracle of not eating sugar and flour. She also weighs and measures her food. Her life got so much better after that. For Susan, "none is easier than some". In this episode, Susan and I talk about food groups, whole foods, the NOVA food classification scale, individuality, what we need and what we want, her identity as a food addict, following rules, intuitive eating, and freedom.Find Susan and BLE here.To get rid of cravings, especially if you're an intermittent faster, download your 5 tips here. Also check out the Life After Sugar Facebook page, and subscribe to my Instagram account,  TikTok, and to the Life After Sugar YouTube channel. To rate and review this podcast: scroll down in your podcast player on your phone and click on the stars. In today's episode, Susan Peirce Thompson shares how her company, Bright Line Eating, can help you achieve sustainable weight loss. She explains how food addiction is neurologically identical to any other addiction. Society's narrative is that our low self esteem comes from obesity but Thomspan argues that it is just the opposite, that processed foods are literally hijacking our brains resulting in unhealthy eating habits that inevitably degrade our self worth. With her structured meal plans, it becomes simple and easy to overcome destructive cravings by cutting off processed sugars and flours to restore your body, mind and self confidence.    Takeaways: [4:00] What you eat today impacts what you will eat tomorrow [6:10] acknowledging that processed food can be as addicting as any other drug [8:50] Traits that contribute to food addiction: Impulsivity, Emotional Sensitivity and Obsessing  [11:10] Intuitive eating approach does not work for individuals addicted to eating [13:00] If addiction is in play abstinence is actually very helpful [13:50] Refining and Processing: Sugar and Flour are linked to the most addictive foods  [15:45] Leptin resistance is linked to insatiable hunger [19:20] Dopamine receptors: A brain addicted to heroine is identical to a brain addicted to sugar  [22:15] Creating a bright line and quitting addictive foods  [24:30] Low self esteem is the consequence of food addiction not the cause [26:00] Processed foods are hijacking our brains [27:30] Age is not a factor: You can use the brightline eating method successfully in menopause    Mentioned in Episode: BrightLineEating.com Social Media Links: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/BrightLineEating Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/brightlineeating/ Twitter Susan - https://twitter.com/DrSPThompson Please list any links you may mention in your interview so we can add them to our show notes.  BrightLineEating.com FoodAddictionQuiz.com Twitter: “You have to get your brain on board or it will fight you every step of the way.” [5:40]   “The more addictive your relationship with food is, the more you're ganna be set free by a structured plan of eating.”  [11:35]   “When we extract the inner essence and refine it into this fine powder, we've created a drug and that's what we've done with sugar and flour.” [13:55]   “The foods in our modern food environment have been hijacking your brains” [26:30]     Podcast Disclaimer:  https://resources.thespadr.com/the-womans-doctor/#disclaimer

Ep#117 Today's episode shines the light on a whole new way to understand compulsive overeating and that's through the lens of food addiction.  Research suggests something more complex might be going on with some foods that we eat that affect the brain's reward system similarly to the way addictive drugs do.  When addiction is the underlying cause of obesity, traditional treatment with diets that rely on personal responsibility, lifestyle changes or “willpower”can have minimal effects. Today's guest is a visionary and leader in the field of food addiction.  She is Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D.Adjunct Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester, and an expert in the psychology of eating.  She is a best selling author with 3 books, “Bright Line Eating: The Science of  Living Happy, Thin, and Free”., "The Official Bright Line Eating Cookbook  - Weight Loss Made Simple", and her newest book, "Rezoom: The Powerful Reframe to end the Crash-and-Burn Cycle of Food Addiction.”Susan  is President of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss and CEO of Bright Line Eating Solutions (BLE), a company dedicated to helping people achieve long-term, sustainable weight loss by showing you how to rewire your brain and break the yo-yo diet cycle.   BLE is geared towards those who are susceptible to addictive foods and have struggled to find peace and sanity around food. Grounded in psychology and neuroscience Susan's program uses cutting edge research to explain how modern processed foods impact the addiction centers of the brain.   The complete opposite of the deprivation diet mindset, Bright Line Eating seeks to empower people for life, by creating a supportive community to heal the deeper emotional components that underlie addictive behaviors by integrating the tools of Positive Psychology and Internal Family Systems.  But Bright Line Eating is more than just a way of eating—it's a movement.  Their incredibly close-knit Online Support Community is the core of their program and provides the outreach and human connection essential to  success. Thousands of people from more than 60 countries have participated in their information packed online courses, and their community is growing by tens of thousands each month.  Learn About Brighline Eating (free trial available): https://brightlineeating.com/en/Learn More About Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D (weekly VLOG) :  https://susanpeircethompson.com
