There's already a bit of a buzz around this episode — if only because the Amarkaners in question are the island's hard-working honeybees. In episode three, we visit Bybi — a bee-powered project based in Amager's historic Sundholm district — to meet its British founder, Oliver Maxwell. We learn about Bybi's unusual origin story and location, discover why Oliver prefers to see honey as an "invitation" not a product, and hear about the honey that has some of Copenhagen's best chefs "falling over backwards".“As soon as you start working with bees, you realise that honey is absolutely magical," Oliver says. "You put these creatures out around the city and over a few days, weeks and months, they accumulate this absolute treasure."The sound design is by two artists — Squares and Triangles and Scenery.
In this episode, we speak to the inspiring female entrepreneurial founders of BYBI beauty brand Elise Rutterford & Dominika Minarovic. Elsie and Dominika met at YuMe during the crazy days of mobile advertising and founded their successful beauty start-up based on a passion for high-quality vegan beauty products. We speak to them about the challenges that female founders face when raising capital and, their opinions on marketing trends for beauty brands.
In 2015, two London-based entrepreneurs Dominika and Elise met in a corporate job (literally sharing desks) where they quickly became office friends, sharing a bond over a passion for clean beauty and lifestyle which together, led them to launch the trend-setting blog, podcast, book, and Instagram account, Clean Beauty Insiders. Building on this partnership, they followed their love for clean beauty and pivoted out of Full-Time corporate jobs to fearlessly become entrepreneurs, co-founding BYBI in 2017. BYBI is the first beauty brand to declare a war on carbon (the number one contributor to the climate crisis) and is on a mission to make sustainable skincare easy and accessible for everyone, boasting a comprehensive range of highly efficacious skincare, BYBI includes a range including masks, moisturizers, boosters, and more. Fast forward to today, Elsie and Dominika are published authors, trained skincare formulators, podcasters and who (leading BYBI) are paving the way for more climate-conscious practices, from ingredients to production and packaging. Hey Beauty + Impact fam! You may have spied Jasmine stocking up at Target on BYBI Beauty products on the Beauty + Impact Instagram recently. We both love this skincare brand so much we had to get the founders on the show to spill all the green tea! https://us.bybi.com/ (BYBI Beauty), founded by Elsie Rutterford and Dominika Minarovic in 2017 is a pro-planet, vegan, natural, and cruelty-free skincare brand. BYBI brings a bit of fun to the clean beauty space with their cute and bright packaging (which is 100% recyclable) but are making a big impact with skincare that not only works but is sustainable and affordable, making it accessible for everyone. And BYBI just launched the world's first-ever carbon negative skincare product! So, you may have all heard the term carbon neutral but in this episode, we get the lowdown on what does carbon negative mean and how it takes the sustainability factor one step further. BYBI is really leading by example when it comes to building a 100% sustainable beauty brand. In this episode you'll hear: Starting off pioneering the clean beauty space in the UK How they are influencing their supply chains to be carbon negative/neutral – they recently petitioned their factory suppliers to run on green energy and now they all function on 100% green energy! Building innovation into BYBI from the beginning and how they continue to drive innovation from product to packaging to branding Some of their failures and what they learned– some products sadly are just too ahead of their times The product lifecycle analysis and what it involves from start to finish – this was eye-opening and something every product brand should be doing What the beauty industry is ignoring when it comes to sustainability How consumers have the power to create change in the beauty industry with their purchasing power What the tell-tale signs are of greenwashing and how you can spot when a brand is truly sustainable The differences between the UK and the US when developing and marketing a new product including how European laws impact the ingredients allowed If you enjoyed this episode and it inspired you in some way, we'd love to hear about it and know your biggest takeaway. Join us this week as Liz and Molly meet with the two female founders of BYBI Beauty. Their journey started out as colleagues at their corporate jobs in sales, together started a vegan beauty line, published a book, quit their jobs, and continued to build a venture-backed vegan, cruelty-free, carbon-negative beauty line. Dominka and Elsie are driven, determined and admirable women and they share their story from how it all started, what it was like to get funding and become moms as they build their empire. Molly and Liz couldn't think of two better women to have on the Saus during Women's history month and for International Women's day. Tune and enjoy and perhaps it will inspire your side hustle!
Welcome to this Green Beauty Opinion in which Formula Botanica CEO Lorraine Dallmeier picks up on an important issue raised in the previous episode on carbon neutral beauty in her interview with the co-founders of BYBI Beauty. BYBI's Elsie Rutterford and Dominika Minorovic said that to date, the time, effort and money spent on developing BYBI as a truly sustainable brand was not making a mark on consumer consciousness as a key reason to choose their brand's products. Is sustainability not such a big issue for consumers after all? Lorraine quotes several leading opinion polls conducted in the past few years that tell a different story showing consumers are keen to buy from brands that put sustainability at the heart of their business. Lorraine points out that there is a clear mismatch between what consumers say they are doing or wish to do and what they are actually doing at the point of purchase. They are simply not voting with their wallets and choosing brands that embed sustainability in their DNA. Why is this? Some polls show that consumers don't know how to tell if a brand or product is sustainable. So does the blame lie with the brands or the consumers? This grey area of responsibility blurs the action needed now which is for us all to reduce our consumption and go out of our way to question the brands we buy from. With greenwashing still rife - as we have heard in our episodes on waterless beauty and biodegradablity - we all as consumers need to take the responsibility for sustainability and not lay the blame elsewhere. Listen in for a thought-provoking five minutes that challenges us to be the voice of change and integrity, making the beauty industry better and more sustainable.
Uncontrolled beauty consumerism is inherently not a sustainable economic activity. We've said it before on the Formula Botanica podcast but it's worth stressing again: the entire life cycle of a consumer beauty product from cradle to grave can be a long list of carbon-producing processes. The growing, harvesting, processing and shipping of raw, natural materials coupled with beauty product packaging, distribution, retailing and waste create a complex chain of potentially carbon-emitting steps and unsustainable practices. So, faced with this reality and a sense of overwhelm about the daily news on the climate crisis, what can an indie beauty brand meaningfully do to ensure it doesn't burden the planet, or do even better by becoming planet positive? With this key question in mind, Green Beauty Conversations' podcast host and Formula Botanica CEO Lorraine Dallmeier invited the founders of indie brand BYBI to shed light on their mission to become not just a carbon neutral but also a carbon-negative – or planet-positive – beauty brand. In this insightful, no-holes-barred episode, Formula Botanica graduates and BYBI co-founders Dominika Minorovic and Elsie Rutterford prove the sceptics wrong. Listen in for some refreshing honesty in a world of greenwashing and hear how one beauty brand is carrying out sound plans to sink carbon while successfully selling skincare.
‘I do.' Those two words conjure up visions of wedding fayre, flowers, cake, brides, grooms. Marriage is a serious decision, complete with signed government documents and promises related to health and finances. If you break down a co-founder relationship, what you'll find is a lot of those same critical components. Hours of time spent together on a daily basis for an undetermined but nevertheless significant amount of time; finances tied to each other; and a never-ending stream of contracts and other legal documents you both are signed and tied to. And don't forget the countless conversations, squabbles, laughs and tears that woven together create the fabric of a relationship that can, hopefully, stand the test of time. Dominika Minarovic, one of the co-founders of BYBI Beauty, knows that choosing the right business partner is like choosing the right life partner: it all starts with a foundation of respect and admiration.“I was always like equal parts fearful slash pure admiration of Elsie. And I think that's a great combo, obviously not fearful of her anymore, but Elsie has a presence when she walks into a room. Everyone will stop and listen. And I think that's really powerful. I saw someone that I really admire. Elsie and I have really, really been through the wars. Like we've done some hard graft and I don't think at any point, have I ever heard a complaint come out of her mouth? We have carried boxes up like 10 flights of stairs. We've started offices in broom closets. This kind of partnership is like any relationship: it has to go both ways. That mutual respect for each other is what you'll need to remember and fall back on when crises pop up. But as Dominka's co-founder, Elsie Rutterford will say, there's also got to be an equal level of commitment to the work. “The word hustle. If you look it up in the dictionary, you will see Dominika Minarovic's name sat underneath that. So she was a hustler through and through. And I really liked that about her. And I think like the hard working ethic. Yeah. And the way that she applied herself, I was like, definitely somebody that I would want to work with.” Respect, trust, and common dreams. These are some of the elements that are sprinkled through the story of how Elsie and Dominika found each other and developed their business together. But what else goes into a good co-founder relationship? And how did Elsie and Dominika find the answer throughout their journey to bring their beauty brand, BYBI, to the world? Find out this week on The Journey.Main Takeaways:A Match Made in Heaven: When you have the right co-founder by your side, there are limitless benefits. You can be there to support each other. You can share the burden of the responsibilities and daily tasks of running the business — especially valuable in the early stages. You can also share more empathy for each other, going through life changes and unexpected circumstances. You can share the financial responsibilities and take on less personal risk. But most importantly, by having a co-founder, you share a passion and drive toward a common goal and that can make your business strong enough to last. Disruption Takes Passion and Authenticity: Being passionate about the product or market you're working in is a huge advantage because it makes you naturally think about what you want to get as a consumer. Having a deep-rooted passion about something that you want to change or dispel in that industry will make you more creative and effective in your work there. A Launching Pad: Your business might not evolve in the way you expect. There are many different ways for a brand to launch, whether that's through a blog, a social media account, a book deal, or anything in between. No matter how people begging to know you or your brand, the most important thing you can do is recognize the opportunity in front of you and find a way to capitalize on it in a meaningful way.---This season of the Journey is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by UPS. Clean beauty and sustainability while noble pursuits are inherently rife with misinformation and lacking definition. There may be no perfect answer or solution, but there's plenty of progress. Every individual and business is in a different stage representing the reality that sustainability exists on a spectrum and looks different for each of us. Yet, an argument can be made that we all have a part to play as global citizens. Elsie Rutterford and Dominika Minarovic, co-founders of British beauty brand, BYBI sit down with Kelly Kovak to discuss how the existing system needs a total reconstruction, and how for them the road to sustainability has been a work in progress. "Sustainability" was a buzzword in beauty and wellness well before the pandemic. But due to 2020's stay-at-home orders, coupled with the sheer volume of boxes and waste from online shipping, beauty companies recognized they needed to up their focus on sustainable practices. For British beauty brand Bybi, which came to market in 2017, its road to "sustainability" has been a work in progress. "The term sustainable is a little bit problematic in itself. It's not regulated, so what does it even mean?," said Elsie Rutterford, co-founder of Bybi, on this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. Rutterford started the natural brand focused on performance with Dominika Minarovic, a friend and colleague from their time in advertising. With no professional beauty experience, the twosome first started a natural beauty content platform called Clean Beauty Insiders before going on to make products in their kitchen. A full-fledged beauty line wasn't in the cards. "When we first started, we grew this content platform... We had a book published by Penguin, which was kind of a recipe book for your skin, your hair -- all centered around natural ingredients. We were running these events, workshops in central London, where we would bring together people who were interested in making their own beauty products. We spent quite a lot of time just testing out different ways of monetizing the content that we'd sort of begun to do as a hobby. [Products] were never our end goal," said Rutterford. But their authentic approach to beauty building yielded more than they bargained for. In December 2020, Bybi raised a $7 million Series A, and it launched into 1,800 Target doors in January. Minarovic said that the brand grew 200% in the pandemic and has high hopes for Target to be a $10 million to $20 million account. Below are additional highlights from the conversation, which have been lightly edited for clarity.

Let's talk about the business of wellness… My guests today are Dominika Minarovic and Elsie Rutterford the Co-Founders of BYBI, a natural beauty brand with a conscience. Launched off the back of a very successful DIY clean beauty blog, Clean Beauty Insiders, BYBI is a product-based business that challenges the status quo of the beauty sector. In this episode, Dominika and Elsie share with us the actions they took to scale their beauty blog to a multi-million-pound product-based brand. We hear about the real barriers female founders face when they pitch for institutional investment, and why these ladies feel a personal responsibility to offset dangerous carbon emissions and make BYBI carbon neutral by the end of the year (2020). It's been a hell of an exciting journey for Dominika and Elsie, and with plans to move into the US market next year (2021), we can expect to hear a whole lot more from them. In episode forty three of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with the founders of BYBI Beauty, Elsie Rutterford and Dominika Minarovic.Elsie and Dominika are almost disarmingly open and honest about their beginnings in business, and everything they said, particularly surrounding funding for women in business and also around global attitude to sustainability, will be ingrained in my head for quite some time. After meeting in ad sales, London-based Elsie and Dominika bonded over a mutual interest in the wellness movement that was only just beginning to gain traction at the time. Their interest in wellness prompted them to start looking at the ingredients they were putting on their skin, and in 2015 their website, Clean Beauty Insiders, was born. In the same way you might swap beauty advice or a recipe with a girlfriend, Clean Beauty Insiders became the globe’s go-to destination for, as the name suggests, clean beauty advice, and for recipes for skincare products you could make at home. Elsie and Dominika both began to study formulation science, and in 2016 their following was so large that they attracted the attention of a literary agent. Their book Clean Beauty, was published in in January 2017- a book that had been to auction, was bid on by every single publisher Elsie and Dom had pitched to, and was won by Penguin, no less. Later that year, Bybi Beauty was born- arguably the first clean beauty brand to lead with a message about performance and science, rather than just the fact that it was a clean brand. Bybi launched onto Asos, one of the largest ecommerce platforms of all time, and is now stocked in beauty retailers globally. As impressive as the Bybi story is, what I found even more impressive was how forthcoming Elsie and Dom were with their knowledge. Their approach to both beauty and business is absolutely no BS, and the way they talk about financing and pre seed funding and even just surviving when the business was in its lean years is the kind of conversation women NEED to be having. Money has long felt like a really taboo topic, but I think the more open conversations we, particularly women, can have around finance, the more financially empowered we can all be. I’m interviewing two women here, and you’ll hear Elsie answer me first, but if you are confused about who is who you can follow along with the full interview transcript on glowjournal.com. Naturally, given the state of the world, this interview did take place on Zoom across continents so the audio is far from studio quality, but please persist because this conversation is rich and valuable and one I’m really proud to be sharing. In our chat, Elsie and Dominika share the steps they took to secure investment prior to Bybi’s launch, how you can really know if the time is right to leave your full time job for your startup, and the clever way they bring new customers into the Bybi fold. With unapologetic plans to become the leading beauty brand in the market going forward, Elsie and Dominika's shared ambition for BYBI and their story launching, sustaining and growing the 100% natural, vegan, cruelty-free and sustainable beauty brand to date is the perfect antidote to the winter blues in my opinion, should you find yourself lacking motivation and/or self-belief wherever you might be listening to this episode from today! We discuss everything from why, as a young, agile start-up, they're not afraid to push back on industry norms and how that's helped to cement BYBI as a market leader in the clean beauty space. We also discuss what their journey from novice Co-Founders seeking a Virgin start-up loan to fundraising pros who've gone on to raise SEIS investment and two subsequent rounds of funding from VCs looked and felt like, in reality behind the scenes. The challenges of managing and sustaining a team who are as passionate about the business as they are; the never ending challenges of managing supply and demand; plus how they deal with rejection on a daily basis as Founders, be it from customers, investors and/or retailers alike are all topics that come up for discussion too.Given the strict regulations that beauty brands must (understandably) adhere to, not to mention the numerous hidden costs involved in testing and launching beauty products, I always take my hat off to anyone that dares to venture into the space and Elsie and Dominika are no exception. You know how much we love to talk sustainable fashion! If you’re concerned about how your shopping habits may impact the planet, renting your clothes could be the solution. We chat to Tamsin, founder of Onloan - a British fashion rental company offering mid range designer pieces from the coolest brands on the market right now. It all started in a kitchen... (English versions) Those two girls are young and yet very mature in the way they created Bybi, their own cosmetic brand, a few years ago. They started as beauty bloggers specialized in DIY beauty. And as they wanted to understand more about green and organic beauty, they decided to follow a dedicated online course. Yes, we agree, not all bloggers do that. A few years later, it made sense to them to create a brand that gathered all their values and knowledge. On this episode, we talk about Bybi, modern natural skincare, sustainability and the importance of a wide digital community. It's Beauty Toaster time ! Raising capital is a challenge for every single indie beauty brand. I interviewed the founders of ByBi Beauty shortly after they had finished their first round of investment fundraising (they have subsequently completed a second round) to find out exactly what it takes to nail investment funding. One thing I love about Dom and Elsie is their openness and honesty about their experiences as a result this interview is packed with invaluable advice and guidance for any of you investigating the possibilities for raising money. I would also recommend you go sign up for their podcast as they are always sharing their founder experiences. I love listening and always learn something. https://podcasts.apple.com/…/clean-beauty-insi…/id1445405566 I really hope you enjoy the episode. Fashion special! In this episode we interview Sarah Ditty, the Policy Director at Fashion Revolution who are a global organisation campaigning for greater transparency and sustainability in the fashion industry. Sarah has a wealth of experience in fashion and sustainability, with a career spanning over 10 years before she helped find Fashion Revolution following Fashion is the third highest polluting industry in the world and yet less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled. There is a lot of work to do to tackle the issues we now face as a result of fast fashion and Fashion Revolution, spearheaded by Sarah and her team, are really paving the way for this change. In this interview Sarah not only discusses the work she does at Fashion Revolution but also gives her tips on how you as a consumer can make more environmentally responsible choices when it comes to fashion. She also discusses the full life cycle of garments in fashion - you’ll be surprised just how many hands that t-shirt passes through before it gets to the shop shelves! Tune in if you buy clothes and want to know more about their impact on the world. We recap the very first BYBI Susty Summit, which was held at BYBI HQ in London, all about the ingredients used in beauty and their impact on the environment. The BYBI Susty Summit is a regular event series dedicated to sustainability in beauty, personal care and beyond. Sustainability is a hugely positive yet hugely broad term that right now lacks clear definitions and guidelines. As consumers, our purchases are increasingly being driven by a want for better environmental impact, but a lack of clear information can leave us feeling confused, overwhelmed and not really knowing where to start. The BYBI Susty Summit will tackle a sustainable subject at a time, with the aim to provide you with an open, transparent and honest picture and arm you with as much information as possible to help you make your purchasing decisions. We’ll open up about what we’re doing at BYBI, give you the chance to ask us questions and most importantly, speak to a room full of people who are truly passionate about making change for the better. We kicked off our Susty Summits with a deep dive into ingredients. There’s a lot of emphasis put on packaging in beauty but have you stopped to think about the ingredients inside that recycled plastic tube and their impact on our environment? We talked about natural vs synthetic ingredients, palm oil and what you should look out for on an ingredient label. We’ll also cover the work we’re doing on assessing and auditing our ingredients here at BYBI. If you’d like to join the WhatsApp BYBI Bulletin for a weekly roundup of all things susty, send your name to this number and we’ll do the rest! +4477931 082027 Head to bybi.com for details on the next event. https://bybi.com/collections/skincare/products/blueberry-booster
We interview Celia Pool and Alec Mills, the co-founders of Dame, a sustainable tampon brand who are completely reshaping how we approach tampons. Billions of plastic tampon applicators get thrown away each year and cannot be recycled, an environmental issue that has largely been ignored - until now. Dame have created the first reusable tampon applicator, which is medical grade with self-sanitising technology, easy to use and 100% keepable, and also sell organic tampons. We interview the founders on how they built an eco brand, the key to a successful kickstarter campaign and how they landed Waitrose as a retail account. We also discuss our recent challenges around launching our BYBI CBD Booster. We’ve faced stumbling blocks with Facebook as well as other advertising platforms and payment gateway. Whilst 100% legal, the legislation around CBD is still unclear. We talk through the issues we’re facing! Finally, hiring is something that takes up a lot of our time as founders! Finding the right team members is a full time role in itself, so we talk through some of the challenges we’re currently facing as well as our open roles at BYBI. Ragna invited me to Norway to talk to beekeepers about the possibility of using different ways to look after bees, and different hives, including, of course, the top bar hive. I had a very enjoyable week in this beautiful country, thanks to my hosts Ragna Jorgensen and Joshua, who will feature in the next podcast, once I have finished editing our long discussion in the car, while driving around the stunning north western coastline of Norway. This recording was made in the woods outside Oslo, and I made the mistake of leaving my phone switched on (and receiving a swarm call) so please excuse the occasional radio frequency interference that this caused in my audio recorder.
We dive into the world of Direct to Consumer (DTC). As a beauty startup, what can we learn from DTC heroes such as Glossier, Allbirds and Warby Parker? What are the challenges with DTC and what are the benefits of wholesale? This week we went for the Sunday Riley facial at Hershesons salon in London! The Ice Lift includes LED and CRYO therapy and is the only place you can get a Sunday Riley facial in the UK. Dominika is a massive fan of Sunday Riley products so tune in to see what she thought of the facial! Formula Botanica has over students in countries and are a multi-million pound business. Their community growth and engagement is phenomenal. In this episode we interview Lorraine and Gemma to hear more about how they’ve scaled, how they manage a remote team and why they think it’s important to study in your field as you start a business. Dominika & Elsie began their blog, Clean Beauty Insiders, quite literally in their kitchens - creating avocado face masks and turmeric body scrubs! From sugarcane-derived packaging to launching in Sephora, BYBI Beauty is the natural skincare brand you need to know about! We decided it was high time to take stock of the natural beauty market now that it has matured and is going mainstream. Immediately, we thought of our graduates Elsie and Dominika from BYBI Beauty as the ideal interviewees to discuss a raft of perennial issues such as greenwashing and the use of those vague terms we see liberally and often erroneously used in the beauty business, such as sustainable, cruelty free, and even the word natural. Entrepreneurs, beauty bloggers and Formula Botanica graduates Elsie and Dominika of BYBI Beauty more than have their fingers on the pulse of the natural beauty market. In the space of three years, they have launched not only a successful beauty blog Clean Beauty Co, but also in the summer of 2017, their own high-performance natural skincare range BYBI Beauty. Their blog has developed into a major content platform tackling natural beauty market issues head on, while their brand, which stands for 'By Beauty Insiders', has raised serious start-up funding and is now retailing in some leading retailers. As natural beauty consumers, formulators, pundits and entrepreneurs, Elsie and Dominika know the natural beauty market inside out and raise more than food for thought in this Green Beauty Conversation. In this episode, you'll hear about: The numerous shades of green that exist in the natural beauty market today. How greenwashing is alive and well and confusing consumers more than ever. Why bashing the use of synthetics and scaremongering about 'chemicals' is not helping anyone. Why consumers are focusing first on efficacy when choosing skincare. The next big thing in natural beauty - clean, green, vegan make-up. Elsie and Dominika also shared valuable insights that can help anyone thinking of starting a natural skincare brand today. Key take-aways include: Consumers are asking more these days about brands' ethical values such as Fair Trade and labour issues not just about their impact on the physical environment. There are many shades of natural that can be acceptable to the green consumer; just be honest in how you explain your brand values and product ingredients. Don't use vague or trending terms for the sake of it. The natural make-up market is trailing green skincare, so might be a good niche to investigate if you're thinking of starting a brand. Don't underestimate the power of social media to make or break a new skincare brand. Lever its potential strategically and wisely. Don't assume beauty consumers understand the true meaning of organic, nor organic certification. They often use it interchangeably with 'natural'.
