Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for their May TV retrospective. This time they're talking about something a little more niche, Cardcaptor Sakura. Cardcaptor Sakura is a fantasy anime based on the manga by Clamp. It premiered in Japan on April 7, 1998. Running for 70 episodes, the series ended on March 21, 2000. One of two English localizations, entitled Cardcaptors, ran on Kids' WB and Toonami in the earlier 2000s. Cardcaptor Sakura follows a ten-year-old girl named Sakura Kinomoto (Sakura Tange), who must retrieve a collection of magical artifacts called the Clow Cards. Aiding Sakura are her friends Syaoran (Mokoto Kumai) and Tomoyo (Junko Iwao), as well as the Clow Card guardians Kero (Aya Hisakawa, Masaya Onosaka) and Yue (Megumi Ogata). Cardcaptor Sakura received two movies as well as a sequel, Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, which is based on the manga of the same name. Aaron and Josh discuss their exposure to the Kids' WB dub before going into their thoughts on the series proper, covering the plot, characters, and animation. For more anime podcasts, you can listen to Josh and Aaron talk about Cowboy Bebop and Spirited Away.Cardcaptor Sakura is streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popbreaktv/message

Covers all of Tokyo Babylon by CLAMP In an alternate Tokyo, Subaru, Seishiro, and Hokuto have otherworldly adventures in this prequel to CLAMP’s unfinished series, X. In a poll about which CLAMP series we should cover next, Tokyo Babylon came out victorious. We’re here to give the people what they want, so on this episode, Shojo & Tell host Ashley and her journey-through-all-of-CLAMP buddy Asher Sofman answer many listener questions, like: Does Seishiro love Subaru? Why is Hokuto so great? What’s the true nature of evil? What were our favorite cases? This is a heavy episode to go with a heavy manga. Watch out for the turn about 30 minutes in. You’ve been warned. REFERENCES Unfortunately it’s a bit difficult to find new copies of Tokyo Babylon. The manga has been previously licensed by Tokyopop and presumably is currently still licensed by Dark Horse, though the manga is out of stock most places as of this posting. As I edit this episode, the White Sox are playing the Orioles, and it really feels like some terrible exercise in futility to root for either of these teams to win. Also I delayed on editing this long enough that I could use the actual Kimetsu no Yaiba OP! Hooray? This episode, we're talking about Hico Yamanaka's The Prince in His Dark Days published by Kodansha and Koyoharu Gotōge's Kimetsu no Yaiba published by Viz. The songs you heard in this episode are "Gurenge" (Red Lotus) by LiSA and "from the edge" by FictionJunction feat. LiSA both from the Kimetsu no Yaiba anime. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen's writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. This should have been the 2/27 episode. Listen Show notes: 0:44 - We talk about The Prince in His Dark Days! 12:34 - We talk about Kimetsu no Yaiba! Next time is Beck and Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card!
I tweeted earlier that all the Manga In Your Ears episodes were done and edited, then I went and recorded another one, so all but one are recorded. Also I still have three Taiiku episodes to edit, RIP me. This episode, we're talking about Beck and Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, both published by Kodansha. The songs you heard at the beginning of the episode were "Hit in the USA" by Beat Crusaders, "Brainstorm" by Beck, and "Moon on the Water" by Koyuki and Maho, the latter two from the Beck dub and the former is the opening to the anime. This should have been the 3/13 episode. Listen Show notes: 0:39 - We talk about Beck! 14:00 - We talk about Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card! Next time is Fruits Basket and Drifting Dragons!

We’ve got some gorgeous shows, like Violet Evergarden and a Place Further than the Universe, as well as some shows that might burn holes into your eyeballs if you look at them too long, like The Ryou’s Work is Never Done or Pop Team Epic. It’s got everything from hard-boiled thrillers like Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens, to iyashikei camping tourism advertisements like Laid-Back Camp. And it even has a highly anticipated horror show from a well respect horror manga author…called Citrus. Seriously, it’s horrifying. I didn’t know writing could be so bad. In the end, it’s just nice to be starting anew in 2018. Let’s hope this is the best year that anime has ever had!Recorded January 31, 2018.Timestamps:3:25 - Kokkoku12:25 - Mitsuboshi Colors20:08 - Gakuen Babysitters24:38 - Skilled Teaser Takagi-san29:34 - The Ryou’s Work is Never Done!35:01 - A Place Further than the Universe42:51 - Violet Evergarden52:38 - After the Rain58:32 - Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles1:01:47 - Laid-Back Camp1:08:32 - Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody1:15:16 - Märchen Mädchen1:19:58 - Killing Bites1:26:09 - Beatless1:33:01 - Ito Junji: Collection1:38:29 - Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens1:43:24 - Record of Grancrest War1:48:21 - Darling in the FranXX1:57:54 - Citrus2:05:29 - Pop Team Epic2:07:44 - Slow Start2:10:38 - Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen2:14:08 - THE VOTE – Determining our top 10 picks for the season

What if all Marvel movies were only targeted at men / boys? That's a sort of weird thing that we think about as we get into this week's topic: Fans of anime and manga "for girls" (aka: Shoujo and Josei). What is the most popular shoujo / josei title? Do men read / watch it? How successful is it? All this and more on this week's episode with special guest, Caitline Moore ([I Have a Heroine Problem](https://heroineproblem.com/), [Anime Feminist](https://www.animefeminist.com/author/caitlinmoore/))! Next week, we'll overthrow a dystopian goverment (WAKE UP, MEEPLE!) and probably grow a bunch of fields to feed our family to _not_ die in some medieval time; that's right, we'll be talking about fans of board games! ## Where can I learn more about Caitlin Moore? Caitlin is the author of [I Have a Heroine Problem](https://heroineproblem.com/), a blog about critically examining media (particularly, shoujo and other anime / manga) from a feminist perspective. Right now, she is running a column examining abusive relationships in Shoujo, which is on week eleven as of this writing. She is also a contributor to the [Anime Feminist](https://www.animefeminist.com/author/caitlinmoore/) as a columnist and ocassional Chatty AF (the Anime Feminist's podcast) guest. She is also a multiple-time panelist at a variety of conventions, tackling topics such as _Awesome Women Making Anime_, _Romance and Abuse in Shoujo Manga_, _Isekai Shoujo of the 1990s_, and _Is This Feminist or Not?_ AND, if that's not enough, you can find her on Twitter: [@alltsun_nodere](https://twitter.com/alltsun_nodere) ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **Origins and history:** Anime and manga (animation and comics) are very broad categories of media, originating in Japan. Shoujo (_young girl_) is one of four main categories of anime and manga targeted at different groups also including shounen (for boys), josei (for women) and seinin (for men). Shoujo and josei are not so much a genre unto themselves as they are target demographics for reader/viewership. Shoujo dates back to the earliest 20th century when magazines specifically for girls first appeared in Japan. The wide-eyed look commonly associated with shoujo dates back to early illustrations in these magazines. Until the mid-1960s, men vastly outnumbered women in terms of mangaka, and between 1950 and 1969 large audiences for manga emerged in Japan, as did a flood of young female mangaka. ([Wikipedia - Shōjo manga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Djo_manga)) Josei began to appear during the 1980s during a different manga boom when girls who grew up reading shoujo manga in the 50s and 60s wanted manga for adult women. ([Wikipedia - Josei manga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josei_manga)) The history of shoujo and josei would be an episode in itself, so we'll leave it at that for now! Broadly, shoujo _tends_ to focus on romance and interpersonal relationships, and includes titles that you may know of like _Revolutionary Girl Utena_, _Sailor Moon_, _Fushigi Yuugi_ and _Ouran Host Club_. Josei _tends_ to focus on slice-of-life stories and more realistic relationships (as compared to idealized ones) and includes titles like _Kuragehime / Princess Jellyfish_, _Loveless_, _Paradise Kiss_, and _Honey and Clover_. [// I also saw Yuri on Ice listed as Josei on My Anime List?? ]: # **Most Active:** Anecdotally, it would be easy to say now-ish is the time that Shoujo and Josei fandoms are most active with shows like Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, Sailor Moon Crystal, and the [boom of Josei titles being released in North America](http://www.animefeminist.com/feature-josei-renaissance/). ...And [Google Trends data](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F0751y) would mostly support that hypothesis. Interest in Shoujo and Josei manga by search volume had been mostly flat since 2004 until around 2013 where interest starting creeping up, with some large peaks a
