The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are back and tackling another anthology movie, this time the 1987 animated movie that likely introduced anime to a generation of viewers. Does it actually hold up today? Well, no.  Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 424 includes: -Trailer reactions to live-action "How to Train Your Dragon," "Dear Santa," and "Minecraft,"  plus even more election griping. -Ben says "Red One" is a mediocre mess of a bland holiday superhero movie.  -The long-awaited "Wicked" movie is a marvel and even improves on the celebrated stage show.  -The Anthologist - "Robot Carnival" (1987) -The guys discuss the 1987 collection of anime shorts and are thoroughly underwhelmed by this collection of robot-related ideas. It's more a product of its time, a sampler of what anime could be for novices, and we've moved beyond these simplistic, vibes-heavy storytelling tedium.

This week we talk about a carnival of stories. Each one is unique and interesting and showcases an artis style and their own story. But how Jack and Rick felt were on opposite ends with how they viewed it as a whole. While Rick liked each story and art style, and it was new and interesting for him. For Jack, it was not like that. The art styles he saw were ones he was previously introduced to and the stories where ones ultimately did not sit well with him. Next week's choice is The Stranger By The Shore. In this episode, we wrap up our series on anthology films with an obligatory Dustin-mandated anime episode. Stepping away from the world of horror, we gear up to dive into Science Fiction to check out Robot Carnival from 1987. With an all-star crew of nine prominent animators taking the director chair for their own segments, the film offers a buffet of varying themes, moods, and ideals. Michael continues to weigh out his complicated feelings toward anime. Jason seems unusually familiar with the various directors' hentai credits. Dustin prepared way too many notes and an on-air allergy attack threatens to end the show. And so much more! John & Chris catch up to talk cartoons old and new!  We start with more talk on Arcane, both to get Chris's observations, and also since the original review was recorded before the proverbial Netflix dam burst.  Oh, and Chris reveals a cool personal connection to the League of Legends franchise that you'll just have to hear for yourself. For the meat of the episode, we do another retro anime deep dive, but this time with a film that holds some nostalgic significance to both of us, the 1987 cult classic anthology Robot Carnival.  We give some historical context to how the project came to be, talk the different themes and approaches each segment brings, and even both have personal reassessments on the most artsy short.  The best part for you listeners?  Unlike the old days where the film was tough to find, it's legally available on YouTube for free, so go check it out first if you haven't seen it before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id1eRjO4p_0 (Also this episode was a nightmare to edit because Chris's audio initially came out really quiet so I had to a lot of manual volume adjusting and I was taking care of the family parrot while we recorded and he's super noisy so you'll constantly hear bird screeches in the background but there isn't really much I can do about that so okay enjoy the episode thanks) Timestamps: 6:48 Arcane (Spoilers) 30:58 Robot Carnival (Spoilers) WE'RE ON DISCORD: https://discord.gg/YAqjMUy John's Twitter: https://twitter.com/BehonArt Chris's Twitter: https://twitter.com/ItsmeChrisWade John's Reanimated collab for WarioWare Gold's cutscenes: https://twitter.com/WarioReAnimated Show email (Send feedback and requests here): sketchwatchplay@gmail.com Show Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sketchwatchplay/ Show Twitter (Follow for updates, and send feedback and requests): https://twitter.com/sketchwatchplay Show Facebook (Follow for updates, and send feedback and requests): https://www.facebook.com/sketchwatchplay Show homepage: http://sketchwatchplay.blogspot.com/

The first anthology film this podcast has covered that's more than two shorts, Robot Carnival is a movie created by animators in Japan to showcase their craft. With a unifying theme of "robots", Robot Carnival runs the gamut in tone, length and focus. It's certainly a fascinating film - but is it a good one? Do all of the segments hold up, or is it better to just watch one or two shorts rather than the whole movie?

So, we come to the end of another calendar year, wow, thank you for all the support and listening to us each week as we look at topics we feel deserve more attention. Now this episode we are doing a year in review and discuss what some of our favourites were, what we felt were some of the highlights and what was just downright funny. So strap in as we look back on a year full of robots, space travel, recycling, and the energetic joy of Katie Bouman, and that is just the start. We also go for a ride looking at the movies and tv series that have made us laugh, cry, scream, and sit in awe throughout the year. We discuss the controversy of crazy violence and insanity in movies such as Rambo – Last Blood. Yep some one has claimed it is… Nope you will need to listen in to know what is happening. Also we look at the year in games and take stock of what has happened. We laugh at some of it, get annoyed at some, and shake our heads in bewilderment at others. We recap what has been some of the most exciting and stand out moments for us this year in terms of topics. We also include some special shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events for the end of the year. So as the year draws to a close and the dawn of a new one creeps over the horizon we once more ask you to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated. 2019 in Science - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_science2019 in Movies, TV & Anime - https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/biggest-movie-news-2019/- https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-movies-2019/- https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-tv-2019/2019 in Gaming - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_video_gamingOther topics discussed Kirigami Robots- https://www.inverse.com/article/61662-self-folding-kirigami-robotsBoston Dynamics- https://www.bostondynamics.com/New Horizons (interplanetary space probe that was launched as a part of NASA's New Frontiers program.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_HorizonsSpaceX Dragon (reusable cargo spacecraft developed by SpaceX, an American private space transportation company.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpaceX_DragonMaking breathable Oxygen using comets- https://www.caltech.edu/about/news/comet-inspires-chemistry-making-breathable-oxygen-marsE-Scooters are not green enough- https://phys.org/news/2019-08-e-scooters-green-options.htmlTextile Recycling - https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-06-15/textile-recycling-fashion-old-clothes-waste/11197904Black Hole image makes history- https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/news/black-hole-image-makes-history- https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47873592Katie Bouman: American computer scientist working in the field of computer imagery. Anthology films — feature-length presentations comprised of multiple, stand-alone stories — afford their contributors great artistic freedom and, quite often, crucial visibility. Robot Carnival, which was initially released mid-1987, gathers some names you have probably heard of before, but for many, this was their debut. Including the bookend animation (a worthwhile story/anecdote in its right), there are eight installments centered around the loose theme of "robots," and Jared and Ink dig into each of them. (Spoilers via plot point run rampant, but enjoying these stories does not hinge on plot.) Join us as we talk for nearly the length of the anthology about the components thereof: their themes, their strengths and weaknesses, and how they complement each other and contribute to the overarching theme as it builds piece by piece.

Ryan (aka Blacotaku1) started an ambitious project 3 years ago: to scan his entire collection of vintage Japanese Newtype magazines from the 80s to the 90s and share them with other anime fans online via his Tumblr blog, Oldtype/Newtype. Not only that, but to try to share some of the rare old interviews and photos with various creators, artists, and other big industry names that had been lost to the ages. In this episode, I talk to Ryan and find out what got him started on this project, how he got into anime, and what it means to him to be able to share his love of older anime in print media form with the world. Sidenote: For some reason, this episode got cursed with various technical issues, so there's a few spots where the audio may sound a little wonky and it sounds like we're talking over each other--which, I assure you, we didn't do when we were actually talking!
