Our old pal Todd Nolan from Nashville Tennessee brings us a barn-burner of an album this week. The Geraldine Fibbers' sophomore - and final - record, 'Butch', is a weird, wild amalgamation of alt-country, punk, Appalachian fiddle music, speed metal and anything/everything in between. Anchored by the raw, poetic story-songs of Carla Bozulich and stellar musicianship of the band - including guitar-God Nels Cline - it's ultimately Carla's gravely, angelic voice that seals the deal. Songs featured in this episode: California Tuffy (Live, Paris TV) - The Geraldine Fibbers; The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash; Devil's Johnson - Ethyl Meatplow; Lilybelle - The Geraldine Fibbers; Drove Up From Pedro - Mike Watt; California Tuffy, Toybox, I Killed The Cuckoo - The Geraldine Fibbers; Time of the Preacher - Carla Bozulich; Trashman In Furs - The Geraldine Fibbers; Venus In Furs - The Velvet Underground; Swim Back To Me - The Geraldine Fibbers; Strange Fruit - Billie Holliday; Seven Or In 10 - The Geraldine Fibbers; Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac; Claudine, Folks Like Me, Pet Angel, Butch - The Geraldine Fibbers; Marquee Moon - Television; Arrow To My Drunken Eye - The Geraldine Fibbers; Man-Size Sextet - PJ Harvey; You Doo Right, The Dwarf Song, Heliotrope - The Geraldine Fibbers

Hilary talks to Ava Mendoza about sedans, music store paranoia, and the nuances of being “you go girl”-ed. AVA'S BIO AVA MENDOZA is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer. Born in 1983, she started performing her own music, and as a sidewoman and collaborator in many different projects, as soon as she was legally allowed into clubs. As a guitarist, Mendoza has received acclaim for her technique and viscerality. Her most ongoing work is as leader of experimental rock band Unnatural Ways, and as a solo performer on guitar/voice. In any context she is committed to bringing expressivity, energy and a wide sonic range to the music. Mendoza has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe and recorded/performed with musicians including Carla Bozulich, Fred Frith, Adele Bertei, Malcolm Mooney, Steve Shelley, Mike Watt, Ikue Mori, Mick Barr, William Hooker, Nels Cline, John Zorn, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Matt Mitchell, Jon Irabagon, Matana Roberts, members of Caroliner, ROVA, Negativland, the Violent Femmes, and more. Recordings are available on labels Tzadik, Astral Spirits, Weird Forest, Clean Feed, Resipiscent, and New Atlantis. Friendly critics have quoted: “It's… Ava Mendoza's deconstructing of blues and punk into brutal shredfests that's causing a ruckus in NYC's DIY hubs” (Brad Cohan, Noisey.Vice). “A wizard on a semi-circle of effects pedals, but… equally adept with FX-less technique," (Lars Gotrich, NPR). "Mendoza plays these songs. She makes them sing. Her technique is impeccable, but her playing is astonishingly expressive. She doesn't just bend blue notes; she wads them up into a ball and throws them up against a wall... Mendoza knows what she does better than almost anyone else on the planet, which is tell stories with her guitar." (Aiding & Abetting). Whether it's a chance meeting, a conversation, or being exposed to something new - all of this can open a world of new possibilities. Later in the episode, Kaveh delivers inspiring insight on how to continue growing after college, going after your dreams, and keeping your enthusiasm and spark for music alive. Get ready to be inspired by Kaveh's story! He elaborates on: His story, from growing up in Colorado and learning to play by ear, to attending Eastman, and playing in the biggest stages in the world How he was exposed to an incredibly wide range of music growing up and how that shaped him How he came to choose the bass The different things he learned from the many genres and experiences he had as a young musician How he started playing gigs around his hometown and how that created the basis for the many strong connections and friendships that deeply influenced his career His experience at Eastman How practice becomes different after school – how we need to seek out teachers and seek our own answers How his practice today involves a mix of methodical exercises and creative experimenting His creation process, involving collaboration with friends and artists he admires, improvisation, and experimentation How easy it is to start comparing ourselves and how it is important to celebrate all the small victories How important it is to set goals     ALL ABOUT KAVEH: Website: http://kavehrastegar.com/home.html His discography: https://www.discogs.com/artist/538980-Kaveh-Rastegar YouTube Light of Love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIgWIgmC_t8 Facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/kavehrastegarmusician/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kavehrastegar/?hl=en Twitter: https://twitter.com/kavehrastegar   Kaveh Rastegar is a Grammy nominated Electric and Upright bassist. Welcome to episode 103 of Love That Album podcast. In July 2017, I went with my family to the other side if the world - Canada to be precise - to take in the magnificent musical experience that is the Montreal Jazz Festival. We heard jazz fusion, free jazz, bop, soul, New Orleans funk, bluegrass.....and then there's the shimmering beauty that is the music of the Juno-winning British Columbian songwriter, Sienna Dahlen. Her performance with a rhythm section, a string section and a horn section in front of hundreds (maybe thousands) of music fans in the Place Des Arts was nothing short of breathtaking. I was astounded to learn that her latest album Ice Age Paradise, from which the concert material was sourced, was recorded in a mere two days. Upon my return to Australia, I contacted Sienna to discuss her album, her musical development, and winter.I was also fortunate that her father Laine was with her. Laine is an amazing artist and a songwriter to boot - one of his songs appears on Ice Age Paradise. It was a fascinating chat and I hope that you enjoy it and discovering her music. Eric Reanimator returns with his Album I Love segment to talk about Carla Bozulich and her track-for-track interpretation of the classic Willie Nelson album Red Headed Stranger (and Willie is so impressed, he even graces her with his presence on three songs). You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com.Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum. Jessica Moss is a well-respected and talented musician currently based in Montreal, Quebec. Perhaps best known for her membership in Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Moss is a violinist who has also played prominent roles in Black Ox Orkestar, Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista, and collaborated with Vic Chesnutt in the last years of his life. Though accustomed to working with others, Moss recently made her first solo record; it’s a compelling one called Pools of Light, now available via Constellation Records, prompting her to tour across England and Ireland after upcoming shows in Montreal and Brooklyn respectively. Jessica and I caught up for a conversation, in which we discussed meeting Leonard Cohen during a Silver Mt. Zion recording session at the Hotel2Tango studio, being abroad when Trump was chosen to turn the United States of America into a failed casino, parenting in a weird world, working with Kevin Doria and receiving encouragement to write her own music, global warming, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, and Planet Bean Coffee.

Zum Podcast Episode 20 - Carla Bozulich/Evangelista  ----------- First time trying a multi-microphone interview with a multi-headed beast, this round it's Carla Bozulich and her Evangelista bandmates Tara Barnes and Dominic Cramp. I'm joined in the interview by Mike Keegan. Carla's music projects have included Ethyl Meatplow, Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella, and most recently Evangelista who have put out three epic albums on Constellation Records. They take a break from their busy schedules to chat with me at the Huffin House in Oakland. They've got two gigs in the Bay, their last US shows for the foreseeable future, July 19th at the Nightlight and August 17th at the Hemlock. A bit hectic and goofy, given how dark and mysterious the music gets, with a special surprise drop-in phone guest. ------------ HIGH CASTLE - After God - Spirit of the West (Zum) (intro music)  GERALDINE FIBBERS - You Doo Right - Butch  BORFUL TANG - Sanctuary  BUSINESS LADY - Rock Candy Mountain - Torture Footage (Load)
