I am fortunate enough to occasionally have labels or artists connect with me about new music they have coming out. Sometimes those discussions result in a guest mix. Which brings us to this latest mix. Daniel Field, owner/founder of Imaginary North, reached out about some new music coming out on his excellent ambient label. He has a new album out under his Kilometre Club moniker so we figured it would be a great time for a guest mix. Here's what Daniel has to say about this collection: "I am so excited to share my new triple album, An Alphabet of Distance, and wanted to create a mix that reflects the idea of closeness. As a result, I looked to music being made in and around my hometown Toronto, thinking about some of our growing ambient community, as well as reflecting on the past. While putting this together, I quickly began to notice themes and trends that have permeated local ambient, electronic, and experimental music from this vast and vibrant city. More than anything, the vast array of instruments used across this mix feels like a connect-the-dots of the diverse, complex, and cosmopolitan nature of the city. In 100 minutes, on top of the usual guitars and synthesizers, you'll hear harp, bass clarinet, saxophone, kulintang gongs, kalimbas, horns, a bridge, and so many more components that come together beautifully. The title of the mix is named after Toronto's most annoying and traffic-filled major thoroughfare, one that has recently undergone partial demolition and multiple lane closures, but is still such a pivotal artery of the city. An Alphabet of Distance is out now as a digital download or double CD from Imaginary North." Patrick Nickleson is the author of The Names of Minimalism: Authorship, Art, Music, and Historiography in Dispute, an academic study that radically reconsiders the origins and boundaries of musical minimalism. Uninterested in searching for the earliest work of musical minimalism, or even in doing the admittedly necessary work of expanding the canon to include lesser known but equally important figures, Nickleson instead underscores a different set of shared traits that he sees in (early) minimalism: the importance of collective authorship, often collaborating in a form of “bandness”; the priority of recording to tape over written scores; and distinguishing between “(early) minimalism” and the later canonization of Minimalism as we know it since the early 1980s. In addition to the book, we discuss searching for obscure records online, our shared love of Constellation Records, and the influence of Tony Conrad. Artists don't come much more eclectic than Lunch Money Life, so it's appropriate that they kick off the Independent Music Podcast this week as we travel through an hour of music that includes campaigning mothers of Indonesia, experimental screwdriver ambient music, and heavy, hypnotic vocal loops amongst much more. That ‘much more' includes Europop bangers from Glasgow, ferocious bass-driven music, idiosyncratic techno and a whole lot of the good stuff… You can listen to the first six tracks for free. Even by our exacting standards, this episode of the Independent Music Podcast is out of this world. From experimental club music to DIY lofi garage rock, from Jewish folk music to airy baroque jazz, the music on this podcast really pushes the boundaries of classification. Highlights abound, but whatever the hell Moth Cock are drinking needs posting our way, and the Melt-Banana-esque ferocity of industrial duo Sea Moss is a delightful return. Arcanist – on Nebraskan DIY specialists Moonworshipper is exceptional, whilst the first glimpse of the new record from Faten Kanaan is truly exquisite. Hailing from Toronto and part of Constellation Records, it would be fair to consider Do Make Say Think's jazzy, dual drummer, almost joyful approach to post-rock the yin to Godspeed You! Black Emperor's doomy, melancholic yang. That's not to say there aren't moments of darkness in Do Make Say Think's music, just that their overall vibe is quite different to that of their labelmates. Members of the band have played in/contributed to/been part of Broken Social Scene over the years, so they come from reputable stock too. Over the course of their 25 year career they've grown to comprise of 11 members, including various woodwind and brass instruments. At their core though, sits Ohed Benchetrit, David Mitchell, James Payment, Justin Small and Charles Spearin, all of whom have appeared on most of their seven albums. This week's choice is the latest of their seven albums, and arrived in 2017 after an 8 year gap - the longest in their history. So Vicki and Chris take us through a tour of their back catalogue before asking the age old question - should this go in our discography of unsung classics?

For the November broadcast we have our first guest mix, coming from Those Who Walk Away, the alias of Winnipeg-based composer Matthew Patton. Patton's curatorial and compositional work have brought him into contact with a long list of prestigious names, many of which he has included in his mix. Constellation Records released Patton's "The Infected Mass" album last year. The record has a claustrophobic stillness, building a sprawl of sound from field recordings, strings, choir, "ghost strings" and "ghost choir", and real sampled recordings from the cockpit of a plane going down. The record really stuck with me as something that pushed into beautiful but also unsettling territories, and I'm very pleased to have Matthew take us away into some songs that he has been listening to lately. for interview and Matthew's own annotated tracklist: https://www.radiopure.org/post/180297478462/guest-mix-those-who-walk-away-episode-links

Do Make Say Think is an instrumental band whose members all call Toronto, Ontario home. A functioning outfit for more than 20 years, Do Make Say Think’s core configuration consists of Justin Small, Charles Spearin, Ohad Benchetrit, David Mitchell, and James Payment, and together they’ve toured the world and released some hugely influential records. Their latest album is called Stubborn Persistent Illusions, it’s out now via Constellation Records, and will bring the band to a city, likely near you, later this year. A couple of days after their triumphant album release show at the Danforth Music Hall on June 10, 2017, I went to Charlie’s house where I met with him, Justin, and Ohad for a conversation about cinematic music and film scoring awards, the influence of the musical suite, Pictures at an Exhibition by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, generic signifiers like ‘post-rock,’ how drummer Jimmy Payment almost had his foot amputated in the weeks leading up to the aforementioned Danforth Music Hall show, how Charles must balance his duties in Broken Social Scene with those in Do Make Say Think, and much, much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, and Planet Bean Coffee.
Jessica Moss is a well-respected and talented musician currently based in Montreal, Quebec. Perhaps best known for her membership in Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Moss is a violinist who has also played prominent roles in Black Ox Orkestar, Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista, and collaborated with Vic Chesnutt in the last years of his life. Though accustomed to working with others, Moss recently made her first solo record; it’s a compelling one called Pools of Light, now available via Constellation Records, prompting her to tour across England and Ireland after upcoming shows in Montreal and Brooklyn respectively. Jessica and I caught up for a conversation, in which we discussed meeting Leonard Cohen during a Silver Mt. Zion recording session at the Hotel2Tango studio, being abroad when Trump was chosen to turn the United States of America into a failed casino, parenting in a weird world, working with Kevin Doria and receiving encouragement to write her own music, global warming, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, and Planet Bean Coffee.
Saltland is the moniker of composer and cellist Rebecca Foon who calls Montreal, Quebec home. A former member of A Silver Mt. Zion and currently in Esmerine, Foon has just released, A Common Truth, her second album as Saltland, and a lovely, stirring album released by Constellation Records on March 31, 2017. Rebecca and I recently had a chat about her yoga practice and perceptions of mental health, climate change and the actions of people who acknowledge and deny its impact on Earth, her role in co-organizing the successful and star-studded Pathway to Paris concerts for climate justice, Flea and Warren Ellis, her own music, and much more. Sponsored by the Bookshelf, Pizza Trokadero, and Planet Bean Coffee.

As I have said many times before on this blog, a new mix is very often born when a track or two inspires me to create something new. In this case it was the new album by Esmerine called "Dalmak." The group recorded the new tracks in Instanbul and the whole album definitely has the texture and feel that one would associate with Turkish music. The Constellation Records website describes it perfectly... "As a title for Esmerine's new album, "dalmak" refers in a literal sense to immersion in the culture and music of Istanbul but also appropriately evokes the range of music that emerged from this immersion: a collection of songs that shift between meditative pulsing and enveloping restraint to headlong flights into rhythm and groove." With Esmerine as I starting point I went to some familiar sources. One being the wonderful recordings of Myke Dodge Weiskopf. I excerpted part of his Field Recordings & Global Ambience mix and also used a cut from his latest release - "The Muezzins of Mali." I also worked in some Byrne & Eno early mixes from the "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" sessions. As well as some early mixes and extracts from Peter Gabriel's "Passion." I enjoy these musical treks, I hope you do too. Zum Podcast Episode 20 - Carla Bozulich/Evangelista ----------- First time trying a multi-microphone interview with a multi-headed beast, this round it's Carla Bozulich and her Evangelista bandmates Tara Barnes and Dominic Cramp. I'm joined in the interview by Mike Keegan. Carla's music projects have included Ethyl Meatplow, Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella, and most recently Evangelista who have put out three epic albums on Constellation Records. They take a break from their busy schedules to chat with me at the Huffin House in Oakland. They've got two gigs in the Bay, their last US shows for the foreseeable future, July 19th at the Nightlight and August 17th at the Hemlock. A bit hectic and goofy, given how dark and mysterious the music gets, with a special surprise drop-in phone guest. ------------ HIGH CASTLE - After God - Spirit of the West (Zum) (intro music) GERALDINE FIBBERS - You Doo Right - Butch BORFUL TANG - Sanctuary BUSINESS LADY - Rock Candy Mountain - Torture Footage (Load)
