The Record Breakers are an energetic Canadian pop-country band melding the right amount of sunrise and sunset. Formed in 2014 for a Beatles-related celebration, the band began to explore and develop their identity. A special encounter with Blue Rodeo inspired them to bring country into their sound, which has become uniquely that of The Record Breakers. Like some of history's greatest bands, The Record Breakers feature two main vocalists and song-writers, Hayden and Bella. Rounding out the band are Michael, Devan and Julian. Coupled with solid musical arrangements, memorable hooks and big harmonies, the end result is diverse and engaging. Following their 2016 self-titled debut EP, the band released their second album Bigger Plan, in June of 2018. Most notably, The Record Breakers opened for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Bon Jovi, at the Montreal Bell Centre in May of 2018. The band marks that as “an opportunity of a lifetime.” In 2019, they were crowned "Discovery of The Year" at Festival New Country Brome and in 2020 they were selected by CBC Searchlight to be in their Top 50 Producer Picks. Following their initial success, The Record Breakers released their first bilingual single "In My Car/Dans Mon Char"and the seasonal hit "Winter" debuting on Amazon Music and Spotify editorial playlists respectively and gaining well over 50k streams. 2021 brought their latest summer-themed EP Bonfire featuring the lead single “Sunflower”. Defined by Roots Music Canada as an “upbeat, catchy and summery” song, it has been featured on editorial playlists and many radio stations across Quebec.

Joining us today on episode 14 is singer/songwriter Alex Southey. On March 31, 2021 Alex released his third album ...And the Country Stirred. Alex utilized email campaigns to connect with his audience during the release process, not only giving them the opportunity to hear his songs first, but asking them to help him determine what his next single should be leading up to the album's release. We talk about results of that approach, and why he'll continue to let his listeners in on that process with musical releases going forward, and why it was the right time to hire a PR company to assist in the album's promotion. Alex also has a really great idea for bringing attention to older releases in the form of B-Sides to new releases. If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:Alex Southey's Website - https://www.alexsouthey.com/CFMA - https://folkawards.ca/The Gilberts - https://thegilbertsband.com/homePharis & Jason Romero - http://www.pharisandjason.com/Big Little Lions - https://www.biglittlelions.com/CBC Searchlight - https://www.cbc.ca/music/searchlight/#/welcomeStranded Fest - https://www.facebook.com/StrandedFestRelease Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/

With a deep freeze in Texas leaving a wake of devastation, a UN Security Council Meeting weakly addressing climate change as the planet’s “gravest threat”, and massive investment for offshore wind in Denmark to produce green ammonia, there’s no shortage of things to be outraged by or optimistic about this week! We are at a new political moment where we are seeing the ambition for a cleaner world, and we are seeing the economics weigh more and more towards phasing out fossil fuels. We’re even seeing the political winds shift toward championing racial, social, and economic justice! And at the heart of the climate movement that is deeply committed to making all of this possible is a ferocious love for our planet, nurtured and activated by a ‘feminist climate renaissance’ as our guest, Katharine Wilkinson, phrases it. This week we talk to Katharine Wilkinson, author, teacher and former Editor-in-Chief at Project Drawdown, about her latest book co-edited with Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, ‘All We Can Save’, an anthology of women’s voices in the climate movement, and what is giving her a “fire in the belly and the heart” in tackling the climate crisis. Our interview with Katharine gets into why she believes the climate crisis is ultimately a leadership crisis, and explores the idea of transformative leadership and emerging voices at the core of the climate movement which she describes as, “characteristically feminine, but also more committedly feminist in its commitment to equality and justice.” And stick around later in the show for a musical performance from Desirée Dawson! — Thank you to our guest this week, Katharine Wilkinson. In addition to performing as a solo artist and one half of Harrow Fair, recording with the likes of Great Lake Swimmers and Sarah Slean, playing on film and TV scores, owning a record label, and running a music festival (whew...), Miranda Mulholland has recently adopted the roll of artist activist. Following a much-discussed speech to the Economic Club of Canada, she's been featured in outlets like the Globe and Mail and Canadian Musician, talking about the struggles faced by artists in today's music industry. She joins us here to talk about just that. Platinum-selling JUNO nominee Tim Hicks has blown up since earning the CCMA's Rising Star award in 2014. He's fresh from the release of a brand new live EP, recorded during his Shake These Walls tour, supporting the album of the same name. Speaking of summer festivals, Devin Cuddy has a few performances at the upcoming Sawdust City Music Festival, happening August 4-6 in Gravenhurst, ON. In addition to performing a solo set of his own material, he's joining his father and brother in The Jim Cuddy Family Band for the headlining slot. We chat with him about what he and his fam have in store for those performances, how far along he is with the follow-up to 2014's Kitchen Knife, and more. And finally, we checked in with our friends in BC's The Long War while they were recording at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga. A couple of months ago, the band won the 2017 CBC Searchlight contest and have since been taking advantage of the prizes and opportunities that came with it. We'll hear about what they've done - including writing sessions with Royal Wood at the Banff Centre - and what's still to come.
Producer Kevin Dietz has once again offered his services to the winner of CBC Searchlight 2017, as part of our Canadian Musician Career Booster Prize Pack. We'll talk about his work with last year's winner, Desiree Dawson, how artists can best prepare for a studio session, and more. Jerry Leger’s new album, Nonsense And Heartache, showcases a combination of primal rock and roll and raw, confessional balladry. The separation between the two is evident by the album’s title, and it is in fact two distinct collections of songs presented on two slabs of vinyl. In many ways, Leger’s artistic path has been leading up to this ambitious display of both sides of his musical personality, fueled by countless nights playing in Toronto bars with a loyal band equally committed to keeping rock and roll’s original flame burning. Apocalipstick is the follow up to The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer's 2014 release A Real Fine Mess, which received considerable recognition, including a Blues Album of the Year JUNO nod and win for the Blues Album of the Year and Alternative Album of the Year at the WCMAs. As the band explains, the new album came together "from the desire for companionship, the endless pursuit of tone, the strength and glue of family, and above all, the love and admiration for each other's skills." We'll unpack exactly what that means and what's to come for the duo.
It's been a big year for the members of Bleeker, who dropped their latest album, Erase You, at the end of 2016. Cadence Grace, Ann Chaplin and Stacey Zegers have had major successes in their own right as solo female artists, but never imagined that together their collective talents would catapult them to an entirely new level as Runaway Angel. Individually, they have toured Canada, the United States, Europe and Britain, opening for major acts like Dean Brody, Aaron Pritchett, One More Girl, Jessie Farrell, Aaron Lines, Terri Clark, Emerson Drive, and Doc Walker. It all began in 2009 when Stacey and Cadence met on set during the filming of CMT’s Karaoke Star, where both were finalists and became fast friends. Cadence then met Ann at CCMA Week in 2011 and they clicked instantly. In late 2013, the three friends joined forces and together Runaway Angel was born. The girls’ first online release in January 2014 titled ‘Our Story’ was the first song they wrote together as a trio and it landed them in the Regional Finals for the 2014 CBC Searchlight contest. Summer of 2014 was filled with ground breaking experiences for the trio, who enjoyed their first opening spots as a group for Dierks Bentley and Tim Hicks, and played in the Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase. They were invited to present an award at the Country Music Association of Ontario Awards and attended 2014 Country Music Week in Edmonton where they performed in the Coast to Coast Showcase at West Edmonton Mall. March 9th, 2015 was the release of their debut single ‘Run Angel Run’ co-written with Ole Publishing’s Bruce Wallace and produced by award-winning producer Jason Barry. Stacey, Ann and Cadence are excited to release their debut EP this spring. Runaway Angel earned 4 nominations at the 2015 CMAO Awards.
TANYA MARIE HARRIS admits to being somewhat of a late bloomer as far as Country music goes. “Growing up, we listened to a lot of rock more than anything. My mom never listened to Country – unless it was Patsy Cline,” she recalled of her formative years in Ontario. However, a trip into the southern United States changed all of that. “A little later on, I went on a trip to South Carolina, and they had so many Country radio stations around, so I got my first taste of it then. I went home and started listening to it, and watching CMT. I fell in love with the fact that I could understand it. Country is straight-forward, taking a page out of someone’s life and putting it to song. It was always a story that was relatable and understandable.” Tanya is currently working on a seven song EP with several of the songs already available at iTunes including the current single - now released to US radio - called Second Hand Dreams. WILDFLOWER brings a unique blend of folk-roots & rock to their own brand of Country music. As with most musical journeys, Wildflower started with a song. Singer–songwriters Jennie Clarke (vocals) and Dean Selby (vocals, guitar) first met in a Calgary recording studio in 2012, and an instant chemistry and creative connection emerged. It wasn’t long before the two began writing & performing together. Recently honoured with a nomination for 2013 Group/Duo of the Year by the Association of Country Music in Alberta, and Top 10 Regional finalists in the prestigious CBC Searchlight competition in 2014, Wildflower is ready to make their mark on the Canadian Country music scene. Their first full-length album will be released in August 2014. Entitled Long Road, the album name is fitting considering the journey these two have taken to get to this point in their musical careers.
