Today's True Weird Stuff - Forbidden Island In the early 1900s, a woman known as Typhoid Mary was identified as patient zero for a series of typhoid outbreaks in New York. As a result, she was forced into quarantine on North Brother Island and lived the rest of her life in exile. Not only was the island a quarantine zone, it was the location of the General Slocum steamboat disaster, the deadliest event to happen in New York before 9/11. Today, North Brother Island has been abandoned for over 60 years, and travel to the island is strictly forbidden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Games discussed: Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, Codenames, Forbidden Island, Betrayal at the House on the Hill, Azul, Kingdomino, Carcasonne, Splendor, Ticket to Ride, Wingspan, and more. I always used to be very much a competitive player. Pitting my wit against other people was my thing. I would usually lose games and still do, but it was always a lot of fun. Cooperative games really only came into my life when our daughter was young enough to play games with us that weren't just roll-and-move. I remember our first game of Forbidden Island, which we all really enjoyed and played many times since. So in this article, I want to explore why cooperative games have become so popular in recent years. I always say that not everyone will like every board game, but there is a board game for everyone. I suppose, I should concede that some people don't like board games at all. Our hobby isn't for everyone and that's fine, of course. However, in this article, I want to look at the sort of games that should suit most people. Joe Slack joined me (again!) to talk about when he shelves a design and when he returns to one on that shelf. This was a good conversation where I get to wax lyrical about some of my own lost designs. Remember, designers, it's okay to put something away for a little while to give yourself some clarity on it. Sometimes I get asked to recommend games for someone to play. As you can imagine, that's never easy and my first question tends to be what other games they have already played. If they're completely new to the hobby, I usually ask how many people they intend to play with, whether they're a competitive group, how long they're happy to play for. It's also sometimes good to find out what sort of films, TV shows or activities they like, because many board games have a setting that might fit. So, in this article, I want to give you a list of different types of games that I tend to suggest to people. We're stranded on a sinking island with Tim from 'Board Game Hot Takes' - Can we grab some treasure and make it to the helipad, or will be end up in the watery abyss? Highlights include: - Mark still claims not to be a hater - If Tim doesn't like something, you'll know about it - The game comes in a nice tin, if you were wondering - We were doing fine, until Tim jinxed it - The Pilot easily has the best power - We lost, but for a moment, we didn't really know how or why - If you win, then it's because you're skilled. If you lose, the game obviously cheated
