Phil Beuth spent his entire broadcasting career with one company. As the first employee of a fledgling media startup in 1955, Phil worked his way up over 40 years, as Capital Cities grew to become one of America's most influential and successful media companies—and ultimately, the owner of ABC. Born into a blue-collar neighborhood of Staten Island in 1932 to working-class parents, Phil had a mild form of cerebral palsy that gave him a signature pigeon-toed limp all his life. The young struggling family was crushed by Phil's father's tragic death when Phil was just four. His mother subsequently parked her young, physically impaired son with her step-father, an embittered, war-wounded veteran who ran a ramshackle "Sanford and Son" junk business out of his backyard. Phil Beuth would ultimately raise himself by his orthopedic bootstraps to become a respected and honored leader in his field, a member of two Broadcasting Halls of Fame, head of "Good Morning America" and a Division President of ABC. A very proud graduate of Union College and Syracuse University, Phil's colleagues, business associates, friends, and fans include Ted Knight, Regis Philbin, Audrey Hepburn, Jack Hanna, Charlie Gibson, Sir Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra, Cher, Jackie Robinson, Barbara Walters, Warren Buffett, Sammy Davis Jr., Burt Reynolds, Red Skelton, Muhammad Ali, and many more. Phil's story is a chronicle of that "Mad Men" golden era of television, a time when broadcasting as we know it came into being. It is also a powerful lesson in forging a career that is ethical and prosperous; "doing well and doing good." Steven Portnoy, CBS News Correspondent covering the White House, on WMAL's influence in Our Town while under host Andy O's direction~ "But it speaks to the influence that the radio station had in this marketplace. I mean this radio station was listened to inside the White House. Harden and Weaver were part of, I’m sure, Ronald Reagan’s morning." Steven Portnoy - CBS News Correspondent and host Andy Ockershausen in studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town and I've been ordered to do a great intro for this man, but he doesn't need a great intro because he's a great broadcaster and a great radio guy and I'm so delighted that one of the WMAL graduates has made it big, big, big time is Steven Portnoy of ABC. That's the American Broadcasting Company, which is now Disney. Welcome to Our Town, Steve. Steven Portnoy: Thank you sir. It's good to be with you. I should amend that. I was with ABC for many years and now I'm with CBS. Andy Ockershausen: What? Steven Portnoy: So now I've worked for two networks. Andy Ockershausen: You dumped our network? We're still ABC people here. I don't know why, but we are. We go along with the flow of course, but Steven, you've had a great, great career both, while you were here and why you left here and now you're with CBS. But you can look back and think of the great days of WMAL because you were at the tail end of it, but you were here never the less. Steven Portnoy's Connection to WMAL and Other WMAL Alumni Steven Portnoy: Well, I feel like I was saying earlier to the lovely Janice here. I feel like I've come back to college because I spent my formative years in our business right here in these studios here at WMAL Radio. Actually, talking through these same Sennheiser microphones. But I was here for about three and a half years for WMAL Radio news department and then, made the move to ABC network news and was on this radio station still for another 11 years or so. So I have a pretty long connection with this station, and it is- Andy Ockershausen: You moved down to downtown with another WMAL graduate in charge of news. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: Robin Vierbuchen Sproul Andy Ockershausen: Robin Vierbuchen Sproul started right here in that news room right behind you. Steven Portnoy: Robin Vierbuchen Sproul. Charles Gibson also another- Andy Ockershausen: Oh yeah, Charlie. Steven Portnoy: ... very famous voice who rose through the ranks from WMAL to ABC News. Andy Ockershausen: Let me tell you how important I was. I'll fly in a red eye from Los Angeles and I needed somebody to give me a ride and pick me up. So the news director sent Charlie Gibson. Giving me a ride from the airport. He never forgot it. He loved it. He talks about it now and he remembers the good old days. People love to help each other. Steven Portnoy: Sure. Well, I mean, very famous names have passed through these halls. I mean, we can talk about the legends of WMAL radio. We just lost one, Bill Mayhugh in the last couple of weeks. Andy Ockershausen: I know, so sad. But Bill hadn't been well for a while and Shirley had died before him. But we were just talking with the chief of police at Montgomery County about Johnny Holliday. Another one of our guys out of this studio and working with Janice in the morning. They're still around, thank God. Steven Portnoy: Well, Harden and Weaver. We had Trumbull and Core. Big names. Janice mentioned that I came in sort of at the tail end of that epic era of WMAL Radio. Andy Ockershausen: Era, right. Portnoy Begins His Career at WMAL at the Tail End of Station's Epic Era | From General Mass Appeal to Narrow Interest Level Steven Portnoy: When I first joined,

This program is presented as part of the JFK Centennial Celebration.
As a society, we still maintain many ancient traditions and practices relating to the care of our dead. We invest tremendous resources and energy in maintaining cemeteries and sacred ground for the bodies of our beloved. In the face of death, we dig and scrape through dirt, mixing our emotions in with the earth. We create a grave--a hallowed space carved out for sadness and pain, but also for warmth and joy. We lay down what we carry from the person we’ve lost--the good and the bad. It doesn’t matter what we bury--a body, a feeling, or an object--we expect it to stay buried. We put it aside, and bid it farewell. And yet, when so much has changed, why do we still rely on this physical process? How can digging a hole--metaphorically or literally--help us to make sense of our loss? And what happens when things go awry? We may not like to admit it, but sometimes the grave is not a final resting place. In today’s episode, we’ll be investigating why we bury--and what happens when our attempts fail. Tony and Gary showcase two more of their favorite interviews with two bold celebrities, Danny Aiello and Charlie Gibson. First, Tony and Gary talk with Gary's unofficial godfather and real Renaissance man: Academy Award nominated actor Danny Aiello. Danny talks candidly about his career as a film, stage, and TV actor, his love of singing, his roles in movies like Do the Right Thing and Moonstruck, and his 40-year-plus friendship with Gary. Next, Charlie Gibson (who worked with Tony and Gary from 1999-2005 on ABC's Good Morning America alongside Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts) spotlights his ingenious wit and rarely seen unmatched sense of humor as Tony and Gary reminisce about compelling moments they shared at GMA (both good and bad) in a wickedly funny, yet honest tone that suggests (in the words of Charlie Gibson) “adversity builds collegiality”.

Legendary Broadcaster Charlie Gibson grants a rare, long-form interview on this episode of The Tony Perkins Show featuring Gary Stein. Gibson worked with Perkins and Stein from 1999-2005 on ABC's Good Morning America alongside Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts. Perkins and Gibson reminisce about compelling moments they shared at GMA (both good and bad) in a witty, yet honest tone that suggests (in the words of Charlie Gibson) “adversity builds collegiality”. Plus, YouTube music sensation Mike Massé!

Single payer advocates were excluded, but corporate interests were, once again, very well represented. A woman in a bright yellow jacket was seated on the front row of the event in the East Room of the White House could be the poster child for corporate health care interests.

Today, or Radio Or Not, we examine the remainder of Sarah Palin's interview with Charlie Gibson, and wonder whether or not we could survive a McCain/Palin administration...
We spent an hour talking about the week that was in lipstick politics. As I said on the blog, I thought McCain overplayed his hand, went too far and produced a dishonest ad. He compounded his mistake by bringing out Jane Swift as part of his "Truth Squad". I also thought Palin did just ok during the Charlie Gibson interview. Let's just say the audience reaction was mixed. Some were appalled that I would criticize even McCain while others appreciated my assessment. What is Pundit Review Radio?
